Ks4 Examination Board: EDEXCEL Syllabus Number: 600/6815/2 Course Description and Organisation Over Years 10 and 11 the following units are studied: Unit 1 - This unit introduces you to the language and terminology used in business. It explores what businesses do, trends that affect them, how they operate and the factors that influence their success. Unit 2 – This is an exam unit and to study this you will explore the types of costs that businesses incur, from the initial startup costs involved in setting up a business to the ongoing daily costs of running the business. Unit 3 - In this unit, you will find out what it takes to build a brand and what a business has to consider when planning brand development. You will investigate the importance of branding to a business, the types of branding that are available and why businesses need to update their brands. Unit 4 - This unit develops and broadens your understanding of customer service in different businesses. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of customer needs and expectations. Unit 8 - In this unit you will be introduced to the variety of job roles that exist within businesses and the various functions that are performed by individual roles, as well as the types of organisational structures used in businesses. Unit 9 - In this unit you will consider why companies participate in marketing activity. You will look at the different types of target markets and how marketing activity differs across these areas. You will examine the different ways that businesses try to understand the needs of a market. Unit 10 - In this unit you will explore why effective business writing remains an essential part of business success and come to understand why there is still a need for written communication, even in today’s so- called ‘paperless’ offices. Unit 13 - In this unit, you will examine the concept of breakeven analysis and come to understand why businesses use it as a tool to make important future decisions, e.g. making changes to costs or prices. Assessment Arrangements Unit 2 is externally assessed using an onscreen test lasting one hour. Unit 9 is externally assessed, completing a paperbased examination lasting one hour. All other units are internally assessed through the production of a portfolio. All units have an equal weighting for this qualification. Project Coursework Details and Deadlines
