Chemistry
Ks3 About In Years 7 and 8 all students cover eight Chemistry related topics, each lasting between two and three weeks including: C1 - Particle theory (solids, liquids and gases; density, dissolving, diffusion). C2 - Changes and reactions (physical and chemical changes; electrolysis; combustion; tests for water and common gases). C3 - Mixtures and solubility (mixtures and solutions; separation techniques; chromatography, distillation). C4 - Acids and alkalis (danger of acids and alkalis; relevant safety symbols; uses of some acids). C5 - Elements (atoms and elements; periodic table; tests, properties and uses of metals and non-metals; alloys). C6 - Metals and reactivity (corrosion; hierarchy of metals [reactivity with water and acids]; un-reactive metals; extraction by electrolysis and reduction; displacement reactions). C7 - Further chemical reactions (mixtures, elements and compounds; particle diagrams; chemical reactions; fuels; combustion of hydrocarbons. C8 - Rocks (types of rock; structure of sedimentary rock; igneous rock; crystallisation; the rock cycle; volcanoes and metamorphic rocks). Assessment Arrangements Every topic carries its own ‘end of topic’ test which is marked carefully by the teacher (no self/peer review). There is a science exam at the end of each academic year which addresses all the science content for Year 7 and Year 8.
