Examination Board: AQA Syllabus Number: 4540 Course Description and Organisation Students are encouraged to appreciate the technological advances brought about through the study of Electronics. They are taught basic principles through to the programming of the latest microcontroller circuits. The course consists of a number of small practical activities in the first term of year 10 which are designed to complete the teaching of the AQA examination syllabus. For the remainder of Year 10 students are engaged in their GCSE controlled assessment project which requires them to complete a 45-hour design and make project. Unit 1 Written Paper (45401) Students answer all questions in two sections and use pre-release material to help them prepare for the examination. 2 Hours, 120 Marks and worth 40% Unit 2 Design and Making Practice (45402) Designing and making a product from a range of examination board set tasks. The finished product is an internally assessed and externally moderated controlled assessment 45 hour project worth 60%.
Assessment Arrangements
Project/Coursework Details and Deadlines Skills in electronic design and product manufacture will be developed through various projects, practical tasks and homework. During the early part of the course project topics will be compulsory; however, in the final year students may select a project title from a list set by the exam board. Coursework carries the highest weighting of the two units so it is important that students select wisely to ensure that they maintain their interest throughout the year. Career Opportunities Students will develop a good understanding and technical knowledge of electronic theory with specific skills in circuit design, modelling and manufacture. There is also an element of computer programming and electronic CAD work. The course will be a good foundation for students wishing to take A level Technology or BTEC Engineering and would also be useful for students considering a career in engineering, especially with an electronic or electrical bias.
