Course Description and Organisation This is a course aimed at helping students get under the skin of production engineering in a modern context. Students study for two GCSEs, one in General Engineering, and the second focusing on Industrial Technology. The course is taught through practical work and suits students who are at home in the workshop environment. Subject areas covered are: Manufacturing Designing New Technologies Materials Workshop Practices Engineering Principles Health and Safety Sustainability Assessment Arrangements Each GCSE requires the production of practical artefacts and coursework portfolios. To ensure the academic rigour of the course, the coursework is carried out under controlled assessment conditions, and both GCSEs also include examined units which are externally set and marked. AQA (4852) Coursework : 60%, Examination : 40% OCR (J304) Year 10 Coursework : 30%, Examination : 20% Year 11 Coursework : 30%, Examination : 20% Project/Coursework Details and Deadlines Minor projects are used at the start of Year 10 to develop skills which lead to the more complex projects used for final assessment. As there are three lots of coursework and three externally set examinations, a determination will be made at the end of Year 10 as to whether or not students will sit their first OCR examination. Career Opportunities These GCSE specifications in engineering and industrial technology should encourage candidates to be inspired, moved and challenged by following a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study. They should prepare candidates to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career choices. Successful candidates will find this course of study suitable for progression on to the BTEC National Diploma and Extended Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering, or if they wish to pursue careers in the engineering industry as Electrical or Mechanical Apprentices.
