Examination Board: OCR Syllabus Number: J320 Course Description and Organisation Economics GCSE is innovative yet retains coverage of the basic economic principles, enabling learners to develop their ability to apply this knowledge to real- life situations in a range of local, national and global contexts. GCSE Economics is made up of three mandatory units. These units are externally assessed. Controlled assessment is not part of the GCSE Economics specification. Assessment Arrangements Unit A591: How the Market Works Weighting: 25% Unit A592: How the Economy Works Weighting: 25% Unit A593: The UK Economy and Globalisation Weighting: 50% Project/Coursework Details and Deadlines Up to four performance pieces of controlled and assessed coursework take place over the two years. The two highest graded pieces are submitted to the board. Deadlines are set during the course and every student must perform their work on the designated performance date. In order to prepare for the written paper, students are expected to attend all theatre visits organised as part of their ongoing coursework. Career Opportunities Students of economics develop a host of practical and transferable skills that benefit them in education and in the world of work. These include critical investigation, analytical thinking, oral and written communication, numeracy, research, ICT and handling of data. Furthermore, the potential earnings for students with a degree in economics is among the highest for all graduates, and there are currently shortages of qualified economists. Economics opens up a wide range of opportunities for further and higher education and interesting and rewarding careers. It also combines well with other social sciences and the humanities, with foreign languages, with mathematics and sciences and with vocational subjects such as engineering, manufacturing and business. It is also very useful for those thinking of careers such as accountancy, business management, banking, finance, government services and professions such as teaching and law. Exam Board Link
