Ks4 – BTEC I&CT Examination Board: EDEXCEL Syllabus Number: Course Description and Organisation The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 First Award in Information and Creative Technology has been developed to: inspire and enthuse learners to become technology savvy – producers of technology products and systems and not just consumers give learners the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the Information Technology sector and some aspects of the creative industries e.g. website designers allow for a flexible choice of units to meet the needs of learners with different interests and inclinations by using different pathways give learners a more focused understanding of Information and Creative Technology explore the fundamentals of technology and gain the practical skills, knowledge and understanding to design, make and review encourage personal development, motivation and confidence, through practical participation and by giving learners responsibility for their own projects encourage learners to develop their people, communication, planning and team-working skills by having the opportunity to select from optional units available in the qualification structure give opportunities for learners to achieve a nationally recognised level 2 qualification in Information and Creative Technology support progression into a more specialised level 3 vocational or academic course or into an apprenticeship give learners the potential opportunity to enter employment within a wide range of job roles across the Information Technology sector and some aspects of the creative industries. Assessment Arrangements Percentages: Controlled Assessment - 75% Examination - 25% Unit 1: The Online World This unit is assessed using an onscreen test. Edexcel sets and marks the test. The test lasts for 1 hour and has 50 marks. Students will complete an on-screen test that has different types of questions including objective and short-answer questions. Where appropriate, questions will contain graphics, photos, animations or video. An on-screen calculator is available for questions requiring calculations. An onscreen notepad is available for making notes. Each item will have an accessibility panel that allows a learner to zoom in and out, and apply a colour filter. The assessment approach for the internally assessed units in the qualification structure enables learners to receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards meeting the unit assessment criteria. These units include a Digital Portfolio unit (Unit 3), which is assessed synoptically, with learners using their work throughout the course to compile their portfolio. The internally assessed Database Development unit (Unit 10) provides a common approach to understanding existing technology products/systems through investigation and to designing, making and reviewing a technology-based product or system. Learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and achievement, taking account of the industry standards for behaviour and performance. Project/Coursework Details and Deadlines
Career Opportunities The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 First Award in Information and Creative Technology provides the skills, knowledge and understanding for level 2 learners to progress to: other level 2 vocational qualifications level 3 qualifications, such as the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Nationals in IT or an IT/Creative Media apprenticeship. academic qualifications, such as GCE A Level in ICT or Computing. employment within the information technology and/or areas within the creative industries, such as computer animations. learners who achieve the qualification at Level 1 may progress on to the Level 2 Award or onto academic or other vocational Level 2 qualifications. Skills in ICT are now so important that all employers will expect a high level of competence in the subject.
