Ks5 AS/A Level AQA Course Description and Organisation This course is made of four assessed units: AS HIS1A The Crusading Movement and the Latin East 1095-1204 This unit provides an opportunity to study an overview of the development in medieval Europe during the twelfth century focusing on the impact of the first four crusades looking at the concepts of continuity and change. AS HIS2B Conqueror and Conquest 1060-1087 This unit provides an opportunity study in depth a period of significant change by examining the impact of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon England. A2 HIS3A The Angevin Kings of England 1154-1216 This unit provides the opportunity to study the concept of continuity and change in the context of the changes created by the Angevin kings from 1154-1216. A2 HIS4X Historical Enquiry This unit provides an opportunity for students to carry out a self-supported study on the theme of Medieval Heresy 1150-1350. This unit is assessed by coursework. Assessment Arrangements AS HIS1A The Crusading Movement and the Latin East 1095-1204 This unit makes up 25% of the A level. It is assessed by an exam of 1 hour and 30 minutes which tests the use of knowledge and essay writing. AS HIS2B Conqueror and Conquest 1060-1087 This unit makes up 25% of the A level. It is assessed by an exam of 1 hour and 45 minutes which tests the use of the use of sources and essay writing. A2 HIS3A The Angevin Kings of England 1154-1216 This unit makes up 30 % of the A Level. It is assessed by an exam of 1 hour and 45 minutes which tests essay writing skills. A2 HIS4X Historical Enquiry This unit makes up 20 % of the A level. Career Opportunities A level history is necessary as a qualification for studying history at university. The analytical and argumentative skills covered in the subject can also support applications for such subjects such as law and English. History is suitable as general qualification for jobs requiring the skills of communication- oral and written analysis e.g. journalism, law, civil service, police work and information services. More specific careers are those of archivists, museum workers, archaeologists, antiques specialists/restorers, museum curator and history teacher. Exam Board Link
