Garden Ale Brew. Co. Kansas City, MO
During this project I had the pleasure of working with Jacob Albracht and Michaela Hoefer. Located in Kansas City’s Crossroads district, we were asked to design a Microbrewery between the Kaufman Center and KCMO’s public trolley. The Crossroads over time has developed a cultural identity as an Arts district in the city. By incorporating community gathering spaces we hoped to create a space that would take advantage of the community events centered around the district and create a new community hot spot. We had a desire to connect the trolley pathway with the Kaufman. As there was no pedestrian access we decided to create a pedestrian “bridge” between both locations. A key design incentive for us was the desire to create a sustainable building and business. When considering what to design we first had to think about how all aspects of the building and its materials would have to be accounted for in an attempt to keep the building at a Net 0. We developed a system where by all materials both in construction and in the running of the business would be sourced sustainably or sourced on site, and any leftover byproducts of production would be recycled or composted. One defining feature is the greenhouse that encompasses the majority of our building, providing a beautiful interior and exterior environment as well as insulation for the building, and a growing environment for food prepared for the restaurant.

Pier City, North Beach Fort Lauderdale, FL
In this Group Project I worked with Quentin Rabu and Claire Ryan. We were asked to design a comprehensive system that could be duplicated throughout the coast in Florida and would cope with Climate Change. In developing our design, we assumed the water would rise 6’ within the next 100 years. As a group we developed a Pier System that allowed water to flow under the city, encouraging nature to reoccupy the edge between human and animal habitation. This edge would be encouraged by tearing apart the exiting impervious roadways and concrete pathways and replacing them with bioswales. Then as the bioswales became unable to control the water, pier pathways would be incrementally developed. A big priority for us was to allow residents power over their domain. By creating this system we allow each property owner the possibility of allowing their building to decay elegantly and become an animal habitat, or adapt to allow water underneath using the rule system we developed. We would allow different blocks to come up with their own concept or design, which would allow them to enact their preferred mobility and circulation. We designed the structure so that as the water level rises the habitat will slowly develop. Eventually, as there is substantial water, it will be fairly simple to fashion a canal to create a water boulevard with commercial space on either side.

Elegant Decay Remove hazardous materials and structures from decrepit buildings, and encourage nature to take over. This will create a natural habitat for local ecology.
Raise on Platform New Buildings will be required to build elevated platform foundations. This will allow water to pass below without harming the buildings.
Build Up Existing tall buildings will use lower floors to protect the upper floors, and new buildings could be built taller in order to preempt the oncoming water.

UCD Animal Research Facility Dublin, Ireland
Ireland is known for their high quality Dairy and Beef. As such, much research has gone into the development and study of the cattle industry. UCD, as a main pioneer in Animal Research, is one of the principle groups who help with this development. UCD has an existing research Farm in Kildare. Though their animal facilities are among the best in the world, the research facilities have been left as a second priority. In an effort to revitalize the human “residents we were commissioned to design a new animal research facility. On-site they had a historic Walled Garden that gave form to my internal courtyards. I was also inspired by traditional Farm Vernacular, and I developed a system of trusses along with concrete boxes that allowed for a comfortable Human Space. As the humans in the space had been neglected and shoved into a corner of the farm, a key component I wanted to focus on was the ability to scale the design and allow for the organic growth of the building in future decades.

UCD Animal Research Facility- Axonometric, and Structural Isometric
The structural system I developed is purposefully reproducible and scalable. By creating a formulaic system of operations, the building can be quickly adapted and added to. Though the core “blocks will need to be pored on site, the flexible work spaces can largely be prefabricated and only assembled on site.

Tulane Culinary Institute New Orleans, LA
The College of Medicine at Tulane University has spearheaded medical education by having culinary classes to help their future patients suffering from eating disorders such as obesity. I designed a comprehensive culinary institution with several extra programmatic features to encourage its use, not only by the students, but by local residents and those looking for a nice meal. While studying the French Quarter, I fell in love with its Grid and abstracted my own grid. This consisted of “block” units as well as pedestrian and vehicular pathways. I designated each piece of the program a specific number of block units. Then I had them create a dense edge, much like blocks in the French Quarter, around my site. I used the “pathways” to help arrange pedestrian traffic on the site.

Eco Machine Lawrence, KS
The Eco Machine is a Research Education Center that focuses on sustainable practice. The centers’ main job is to convert waste water into potable water. The building site is located on the KU campus between Wescoe and Budig Hall. The Concept for the Eco Machine was developed by John Tod, whoes work I used as a reference for much of my own. I chose to use the existing geometric environment to influence my own form. The main orthogonal form is influenced by Wescoe’s more rigid orthogonal structure, while the wetlands on the Budig side respond to that hall’s less rigid form. The Eco Machine, as well as serving to research this process, would serve to educate students about Sustainability and all the opportunities that can arise while developing sustainable features. That is why I designed the building to have a passive heating and cooling system.

Artistic studies
I have always had an interest in Art, and have over the years have accumulated a small collection of pieces. I have had the pleasure of exhibiting some of my art in several young Artist Shows. Art has been a hobby for me and I am glad I have had the opportunity to continue to pursue this interest.

When I was 10 developed a scyfer in order to pass notes in class. To this day I can still read it and love how dynamic a design it was. I decided to use the text of one of my favorite books, Ready Player One.
