ETHIOPIA
Ethiopia is almost twice as large as Texas. Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia, and remains a big part of their culture and food. The average Ethiopian child learns their tribal language, Amharic (the official language), and English all by age twelve. Ethiopia has its own calender which is about seven years behind the western calender. It is currently 2010 in Ethiopia.
CHINA
China is about the same size as the United States including Alaska. China has the largest population in the world with about 1.3 billion people. The Chinese people invented gunpowder, silk, and paper and were among the first to use materials like jade and bronze. China is also known as the "Flowery Kingdom" The color red represents luck and happiness.
INDIA
India is about one-third of the size of the United States, but has a population about 4 times larger at 1.3 billion. Because cows produce milk, an essential part of many popular foods, many Indians view cows as a sacred representation of the Mother. India is the birthplace of chess. The Bengal Tiger is the national animal of India. India provides 70 percent of the world's spices.
KENYA
Kenya is slightly smaller than Texas. The two most common languages in Kenya are English and Swahili. Kenya is rich in wildlife, and thousands of tourists come every year to see lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, zebra, rhinos, and especially the annual wildebeest migration. Kenya is named after Mount Kenya, the highest mountain in the country.
NEPAL
Nepal is about the same size as New York State. North Nepal has eight of the ten tallest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest. Nepali New Year is celebrated in Mid-April and the Nepali calendar is about 57 years ahead of the English calendar, making it currently 2074. Nepal is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, with over 900 species of birds alone.
Nepal is the only country in the world with a nonquadrilateral flag.
SPAIN
Spain is about twice the size of Colorado. For about 800 years, the Moorish people from northern Africa ruled Spain. Under their kingdom many innovations in science were made and education was universal. The bull is the national animal of Spain. The United States has more Spanish speakers than Spain itself. Spain has seventeen autonomous communities that can create their own laws and are similar to US states.
SENEGAL
Senegal is about half the size of California. The official language of Senegal is French. The national animal of Senegal is the lion, and their national plant is the baobab tree. Senegal has a tropical climate and is typically hot and humid, with only two seasons: wet and dry. Wrestling is the traditional and national sport of Senegal.
SIERRA LEONE
Sierra Leone is about half the size New York State. Most children learn at least four languages, including English, Krio (the national language), and two tribal languages. Sierra Leone is known as the "little jewel" of Africa for its rich variety of cultures, religions, and landscapes. Sierra Leone is one of the top ten diamond producing nations in the world.
TAJIKISTAN
Tajikistan is about the same size as New York State. Mountains cover more than 90 percent of Tajikistan. The official languages are Tajiki, Persian, and Russian. Poppies and tulips are native to Tajikistan and they are celebrated with festivals. Tajikistan used to be a part of the Soviet Union until they gained their independence in 1991.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The United States is the third largest country in the world, preceded only by Russia and Canada. The United States has the world's largest economy, and also consumes more oil than any other country in the world. The American flag was designed by a 17 year old student as a school project. American Football is the most popular sport and is unique to the USA.
