Top Quality, Top Size Bulbs Flower Bulb Specialists Since 1868
Dear Sir/Madam We are delighted to present our new Autumn 2011 retail catalogue, featuring some 675 different varieties of top quality, top size de Jager bulbs. Of these, 118 varieties are either new or being reintroduced, as we continuously aim to improve the quality, range and interest of our bulbs. We feel confident that there will be something here to bring pleasure to everyone. Within this catalogue there are 116 Daffodils and Narcissi and 173 Tulips to choose from, as well as a multitude of other types of bulbs. These can provide colour from early January right through to May and beyond. Layered plantings of Anemones, Crocuses, Dwarf Narcissi, Irises, Muscari, Tulips and Scilla can bring colour to your garden, patio or windowsill for months on end. As you may know, de Jager has been running an annual WI bulb scheme for well over 40 years, and through this we have raised very considerable funds for the WI Federations. My wife, Rose, and I had the great pleasure of recently accompanying Pam & Alan Culley to watch the Flower Parade and visit the Keukenhof Gardens in Holland. Pam was the winner of the de Jager WI 2009 competition with her highly imaginative plantings. The parade and the gardens were simply stunning with millions of bulbs on show. This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip and we could not recommend it more highly. Should you wish to do the same, then we would be only too happy to provide advice and guidance. In these difficult economic times bulbs offer an affordable means by which to brighten up your garden, whether planted in grassland, beds and borders, pots or window boxes. Moreover, they produce wonderful flowers for cutting, so enhancing your home with delicate scent and attractive colour.
We have recently returned from the de Jager Tulip Festivals at the Alnwick Garden, Chatsworth, Dyrham Park, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Polesden Lacey, Stourhead, Waddesdon Manor and Powerscourt in Ireland. In 2010, the foul weather meant that the tulips flowered very late, while this year it was exactly the opposite! Despite the vagaries of the climate during winter and spring, they provided magnificent displays and we are very proud indeed to be associated with such fine gardens. At these festivals we were continually asked about the special methods we employed to ensure such flowers, with thick stems and large heads. The answer is ‘none whatsoever’! The secret of our success is entirely due to the size of the bulbs. A tulip bulb should not be the size of a gobstopper but the size of a golf ball. The strength of the flower, stem and foliage is all within the bulb and hence top size bulbs perform so much better.

The Pictorial Meadows Seed Mixes have proved resoundingly popular and will be providing continuously changing colour throughout the summer. These mixes are very special indeed and are a unique concept for easy-togrow, stunning and low maintenance annual cover.
In Sandwich, Kent, there is a most remarkable garden which has been lovingly restored along with its attractive Edwin Lutyens house, The Salutation. All the bulbs have been provided by de Jager and they provide a wonderful spring display, as well as a remarkable, colourful burst of Dahlias in August and September. The gardeners are most welcoming and informative. It is aptly named ‘The Secret Gardens’ and is well worth a visit. QVC television continues to play an important role for de Jager. This has enabled us to considerably broaden our customer base and thereby introduce a much wider audience to the benefits of top quality, top size bulbs. Richard Jackson is an enthusiastic supporter of our company. We are very proud to be continuing our support for breast cancer charities by means of our Pink Bulb Range, as marked throughout the catalogue with . 10% of all purchase of these varieties will be donated to selected charities in order to help fund the fight against this awful illness which has touched so many of our lives.
Last year we launched de Jager Bulb Magic and this has been met with wide acclaim. Almost everything in a garden benefits from a feed to produce better performance and the comprehensive, fast acting liquid Bulb Magic is not only suitable for bulbs but is also an excellent generalpurpose fertiliser. The 1 litre bottle will dilute to make a remarkable 180 litres. It has a very long shelf life and therefore, depending upon the size of your garden, should provide for all your needs for a substantial period of time.
The de Jager Greeting Cards have also proved extremely popular, and are now on sale in selected National Trust shops and other venues. They are ideal for any occasion and a pack makes an excellent gift.
In order to assist you with your bulb planting, the de Jager long-handled and short-handled planters, along with the dibber, are very useful aids. These tools are made from top quality stainless steel with stout Ash handles. They should last a lifetime and beyond!
We hope that this catalogue helps you in planning and enhancing your spring garden with de Jager top quality, top size bulbs. As always, we are only too delighted to provide help and advice, along with assistance in sourcing any bulbs which we might not feature. Thank you for your continuing kind interest, support and enthusiasm. Yours sincerely,
We have now been in our new premises at Church Farm, Ulcombe for very nearly a year and we could not be happier. The tailor-made warehousing and offices exactly suit our purposes and what’s more we have one of the finest views in England! Our enthusiastic, loyal and in many instances extremely long-serving staff, love it as do we.

P. de Jager & Sons Limited have been selling top quality, top size bulbs for over 143 years. We cannot over-emphasise the importance of size. Top size bulbs really do make a huge difference both in terms of flowering and naturalisation. Smaller size bulbs will be less expensive but the results will be very noticeably inferior. In order to illustrate the variance in size, we have photographed a de Jager Amaryllis bulb beside one purchased from a garden centre. You can see the difference! All de Jager top bulb sizes are published in our catalogues.

PICTORIAL MEADOWS MIXTURES
Top Quality, Top Size Bulbs
These mixtures are carefully blended seed mixes of native and non-native hardy annuals designed to provide high quality and cost effective flowering displays. They have been developed following several years of intensive trials at the University of Sheffield. Unlike other mixes that are available, they will flower and provide visual interest over an extremely long period of time (from summer through to late autumn). These meadow mixtures overcome many of the problems that are often associated with creating meadows from seed, such as unreliable germination, short flowering season, untidy appearance and the need to sow on low-fertility soils. They create sumptuous visual effects; they are formulated primarily for their harmonious and impressionistic colour associations, rather than attempting to copy the species compositions of meadows that might be found in the wild. They inject drama into large-scale commercial landscapes, and also create sparkling, complex and intricate pictures in the smallest of spaces. They provide a colourful, wildlife-friendly replacement for mown grass; they can be sown formally in beds, or to provide colour between shrubs, trees and perennials. The mixtures have been used successfully in urban parks, private gardens, school grounds, play areas, urban highways, verges and roundabouts. Leeds City Council included a meadow mixture in their magnificent Gold Medal winning garden at the Chelsea Flower Show 2010. These meadow mixtures are a product of more than one country. Most are therefore not suitable for conservation mixes for use in rural areas outside garden boundaries. Sow these annual seed mixes in the spring – March, April, May – and they will produce superb colour displays within 8 weeks or so of sowing. Unlike other annual meadow mixtures, these mixtures are formulated to produce a succession of flowering species. The suggested sowing rate is 2 - 3g per square metre. SD101

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. Is there any grass seed content? A. There is no grass content to the mixes. Don’t mix with grass as it will kill off the flowers. Q. Can I just scatter the flowers over existing grass to create a meadow effect? A. Unfortunately not - the seeds have to be sown on bare soil. Q. Will the annual mixes self-seed? A. Only some of the species in the annual mixes will. To get the same effect you have to resow each year. Q. Will birds eat the seed ? A. No, they are too small for them to notice. Q. Will the mixes work in Sandy/Chalky/Clay soil ? A. Yes. They will work on all types of soil but the better the soil the better the result.
Q. Do I need to water the seeds if it doesn’t rain once I’ve sown them ? A. No. There is usually enough rain eventually and if you overwater they could rot before they germinate. Q. Will the mixes work in shady areas? A. Yes, but the mixes do need sunshine at some point during the day. Q. How long will the seed keep if I don’t use it all? A. Usually for several years - keep stored in a cool dry place. Q. Can I blend the mixes together? A. You can if you wish but that defeats the objective. Each mix is designed to produce its own long-lasting show. Taller plants in one mix may hide shorter plants in another mix so you will get a better result if you keep them separate.

Please order early to ensure you obtain the varieties you require. DEPTH TO PLANT Failures with bulbs are most frequently due to their having been planted too deep or too shallow. A good general rule to follow is to cover the bulb with soil one and a half to twice its own depth, measuring the bulb from the base to the shoulder. Thus a bulb measuring two inches from the base to the shoulder should be covered with 3-4 inches of soil. Always on arrival unpack bulbs, leaving bags open so air can circulate until planting.
