Dear Sir/Madam

th
ANNIVERSARY
We are very proud to be sending you our new Spring 2018 catalogue, which also marks our 150th Anniversary. In 1868, Peter de Jager sent his son from Holland over to England to establish one of the very first garden bulb supply companies in the UK. Now, 150 years later, we are still flourishing! Moreover our extremely loyal and knowledgeable staff have well over 150 years of service between them, and the wonderful Jo Heale who is in charge of all bulb selection, buying and stocking the warehouse, is in her 47th year with the company.
This new Anniversary catalogue features over 430 different varieties of summer-flowering bulbs, including more than 108 new additions or popular reintroductions, and we trust that it will, as always, provide lots of ideas and inspiration to help you plan and enhance your summer garden. Due to the unpredictability of the harvest, some varieties can occasionally be in short supply, and we are then regrettably unable to meet all our customers’ requirements. In order to guarantee your first choice plantings please, please order as early as possible in order to avoid disappointment! We have substantially revised our huge range of Dahlias with over 40% of the 95 varieties being new or reintroductions. Our large offering of some 65 Lilies has also been refreshed, with 22 new ones available.
Top Quality, Fresh Cut Flowers It is always such a joy to have fresh cut flowers in the house whether these be a stunning bouquet from www.dejagerfreshflowers.co.uk or those that you have grown yourself. To my mind some of the very best flowers for arrangements are Gladioli (pages 20 & 21), providing both bright and pastel colours which are very long-lasting and make magnificent displays. They are extremely easy to grow and I would highly recommend that you find a corner in your garden to plant these elegant flowers.
On pages 2 & 3 you will see a very interesting new cross between Amaryllis and Nerine named Amarine. This stunning and interesting new breeding in 4 differing shades of pink is frost hardy and each stem will produce up to 10 slender lily-like flowers. In these somewhat uncertain times it is a pleasure to have something Royal to celebrate and thereby lift our spirits, whether it be Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip’s magnificent Platinum Wedding Anniversary, or the forthcoming marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. HRH The Prince of Wales is also celebrating his 70th birthday in 2018, and it is with great pride that we can announce that we have been invited to name a brand new Daffodil to celebrate the occasion. This stunning new Cyclamineus Narcissus is being called ‘Duke of Rothesay’: it is brilliant white with a yellow trumpet, flowering in mid-April at a height of 35cm (14’’). It will be launched this spring with 4,500 bulbs having recently been planted at Highgrove. We will be selling Duke of Rothesay in our Autumn 2018 catalogue.
Again we have commissioned a painting by an up-andcoming artist to grace the front cover of the catalogue. Rachael Hughes DipSBA(Dist) has produced a beautiful picture of the Dutch Iris, Mahogany Mix, which is also featured for purchase on pages 26 and 27 under the code M5582.

As many of you may know, Horatio’s Garden was created by the award winning designer Cleve West and opened in September 2012 at the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre, Salisbury. It is named after Horatio Chapple who was tragically killed at the age of 17 by a polar bear. Following the enormous success of the first Horatio’s Garden, a charity was set up to create Horatio’s Gardens at the other ten regional spinal injury centres in the UK. They provide patients with somewhere to find much-needed solace in an oasis of planting, even in their hospital beds. The second Horatio’s Garden, designed by James Alexander-Sinclair (pictured), opened in 2016 at the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit in Glasgow, which cares for patients from across Scotland. Joe Swift has designed the third Horatio’s Garden at The National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, and it is due to open in Spring 2018. The charity has recently launched its fourth appeal for The Midland Spinal Injury Centre at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital in Oswestry, designed by Bunny Guinness, and is also working with the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. Since their inception, de Jager has been delighted to support the Horatio’s Gardens www.horatiosgarden.org.uk
The bulbs that have achieved the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit are again highlighted in this catalogue. These have been tested through rigorous trials over several years in ordinary UK gardens, so an AGM can give all gardeners confidence in the bulb’s reliability, performance and disease resistance. We have also marked those varieties recommended by the RHS as important nectar and pollen providers for bees and other pollinating insects, chosen using the extensive experience and records of RHS entomologists, beekeepers and gardeners countrywide. In addition to these symbols, we have added a new scented logo in order to identify those bulbs that will bring a wonderful fragrance to your garden. Our website www.dejager.co.uk gives you high quality images and lots of information on all our available products, together with the latest news and gardening tips. DAHLIAS - SET THE TONE IN MID-SUMMER
Dahlias are much prized for cutting and they are very decorative in the garden. The Dahlias we offer are in the form of tubers, and from early March onwards TOP QUALITY FIELD-GROWN TUBERS will be despatched in polythene bags, in which they may be safely kept until planting time, stored in a cool place. Dahlias thrive in rich soil, and an application of well rotted manure is most beneficial. During dry weather water liberally. Plant 75-90 cm (30-36”) apart each way. Protect from slugs.
ANEMONE FLOWERING DAHLIAS

LARGE-FLOWERED GLADIOLI
Many of our customers grow Gladioli in rows in the vegetable garden or a spare piece of ground, to provide cut flowers. If planting is staggered, a continuous supply over a long period is assured. They thrive in any good, well-manured garden soil. Plant 3-5 cm (1-2”) deep and the same apart. In dry weather water regularly until growth is established. (Corms).

When considering lilies in your garden, the first and most important factor to bear in mind is that they must have good drainage. Soil which remains waterlogged after rain is not suitable and will almost certainly mean an early death for any lily planted in it.

PICTORIAL MEADOWS MIXTURES
These Meadow Mixtures are carefully blended seed mixes of native and non-native hardy species, designed to provide high quality flowering displays. They have been developed following several years of intensive trials at the University of Sheffield. Unlike other mixes that are available, they will flower and provide visual interest over an extremely long period of time (from summer through to late autumn) and are formulated to produce a succession of flowering species. They inject drama into large-scale commercial landscapes and create sparkling, complex and intricate pictures in the very smallest of spaces. They provide a colourful, wildlife-friendly replacement for mown grass; they can be sown formally in beds or to provide colour between shrubs, trees and perennials. Leeds City Council included a meadow mixture in their magnificent Gold Medal winning garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2010, and these mixtures have been used extensively in the Olympic Park. Sow the Annual seed mixes at a rate of 2-3g per square metre in the spring - March, April or May - and they will produce superb colour displays within 8 weeks or so of sowing. The Perennial seed mixes all contain over 20 species of plants, and should be sown at a rate of 2g per square metre (except Purple Haze – 3g per sq. m.) from early autumn to late spring, with October/November being the best for medium to large scale plantings. Once established the meadow can be managed simply with an annual cut in late February. The original Pictorial Meadows mix is illustrated in the main picture opposite (taken at The Eden Project) and produces stunning displays right through until late October/November. Starting out with white, blues, pinks Per 100g Per 250g and reds, the tapestry turns to reds, orange and yellow in the autumn. The 37.50 81.50 mix has been carefully balanced for colour and succession of flowering, and components include: Shirley Poppy, Californian Poppy, Cornflower, Fairy Toadflax, Tickseed, Red Orache and Larkspur. FH: up to 1m (39’’).

A gentle blending of elements such as: Bishop’s Flower, Cosmos, Cornflower and Shirley Poppy. FH: up to 1m (39’’).
Pixie Annual Mix
A mix suited especially to more restricted or compact situations, but having the same long-flowering characteristics of the standard mixture; Per 100g Per 250g components include: Fairy Toadflax, Red Flax, Shirley Poppy, Love-in-a37.50 81.50 mist, Candytuft and Blue Flax. FH: up to 50 cm (20’’).

SD221

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. Is there any grass seed content? A. There is no grass content to the mixes. Don’t mix with grass as it will kill off the flowers. Q. Can I just scatter the flowers over existing grass to create a meadow effect? A. Unfortunately not - the seeds have to be sown on bare soil. Q. Will the annual mixes self-seed? A. Only some of the species in the annual mixes will. To get the same effect you have to resow each year. Q. Will birds eat the seed ? A. No, they are too small for them to notice. Q. Will the mixes work in Sandy/Chalky/Clay soil ? A. Yes. They will work on all types of soil, but for these mixes, the better the soil the better the result.
Q. Do I need to water the seeds if it doesn’t rain once I’ve sown them? A. For annuals no there is usually enough rain eventually and if you over-water they could rot before they germinate. However, if there is prolonged drought after you have sown then you could try watering once a week. Perennials are more demanding and we recommend irrigation in Spring. Q. Will the mixes work in shady areas? A. Yes, but the mixes do need sunshine at some point during the day. Q. Can I combine the annual and perennial seed mixes? A. We don’t recommend this, as each seed mix is carefully formulated to produce a specific result. Q. How long will the seed keep if I don’t use it all? A. Usually for several years - keep stored in a cool dry place.

PLANTING DEPTH Failures with bulbs are most frequently due to their having been planted too deep or too shallow. A good general rule to follow is to cover the bulb with soil one and a half to twice its own depth, measuring the bulb from the base to the shoulder. Thus a bulb measuring 2 inches from the base to the shoulder should be covered with 3-4 inches of soil. Always unpack bulbs on arrival and leave bags open so air can circulate until planting.
