The Spaces Between

The

concept ‘the spaces between’ or nepantla acknowledges that this in-between or third condition, which emerges between two fixed states,

can be a source of pain and othering, and a wellspring of strength and innovation.

The idea that maps tell stories and convey subjective ideas about the world, often far beyond mere facts, which, drawing inspiration from Uruguayan constructivist artist Joaquín Torres García, situate the Global South at the top. Alongside the Star Maps series, which depict the night sky at specific locations and times, these unexpected presentations of place pluralize the narratives that maps convey, disorienting viewers and opening new possibilities for considering the world and our place in it.

...that's one of the first maps that I made with the South at the top. Which is a direct homage to Joaquín Torres-García, because I'm from Uruguay, and so this map of South America with the South at the top is ubiquitous.

I guess I just had really internalized it

Nepantla is the ‘transitional, in-between space or moments of crisis that are a part of any process of potential change...and transformative knowledge.”

I guess

I would say, become the

master of whatever you are seeking to conquer, so you can, let it free, you know?

But then I always thinking about this idea of, you know, we're all the immigrants, we're all settlers, and honestly, what places on this planet are left that are currently inhabited by people who are from there and unchanged? They are a precious few.

You're neither here nor there, but you're in both and it gives you the perspective for both places.
...you think of the sphere that we live on, it is really a planet in space and space is a void. So there's no North. There's no south. It's a sphere in a void.

Our planet is precious, think about how many things we've done to it.

It is not fragile, but it is precious.

...if you are male and white, you can make art about anything you want.

And I was like, I'm gonna make art about anything I want, and I'm gonna not address the fact that I am whatever .
