Project 1: Section Detail In this project, a detailed section through a building system was choosen to be remodeled. The goal was to match as much of the original detail as possible using the programs Rhinocerous 3D and Twinmotion. This project furthered our developing skills with digital graphics and the realistic rendering process.

Project 2: Wood Framing Elevations To demonstrate our knowledge of light wood framing and foundation construction techniques, we were to construct a partial model of a small 1-story gable-roofed cabin with a basement and mount it to a board for display and review (similar to image below). Our cabin was to sit on a 8” wide wall foundation, 16’-0” x 20’-0” in plan but we only needed to build a partial model to show framing techniques.

Project 3: Steel Framing This was a short project to understand the connections in a steel frame building and the various modes of representing them in drawing form. The Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois by Mies Van der Rohe is one of the most famous steel frame houses in the world. Using the supplied details, we were to reconstruct the frame structure in digital form as a 3 D model. By only drawing the structural elements, we were able to better understand the existing construction with its faults and benefits.

Project 4: Cabin Model The Cabin Model Project was a competition amongst all second-year students. We were to digitally reconstruct a well-known cabin of the design community onto a site in one of Pennsylvania’s State Parks. Photographed on the left and modeled below on the right is Permanent Camping by Casey Brown Architecture, digitally located in Kinzua Bridge State Park.

Project 5: Structures This project was a make it/break it exercise to study the potential structural performance of trusses achievable through an efficient use of triangulation. We were to build a bridge in any form using a limited palette of materials and tested the amount of weight it could carry. The model was tested to failure and documented throughout the process through photographs and drawings. Basswood sticks and string were used to construct the form.

We were to build a bridge in any form using a limited palette of materials and tested the amount of weight it could carry. The model was tested to failure and documented throughout the process through photographs and drawings. Basswood sticks and string were used to construct the form.

Project 7: Violin In this project, we were to model a life size violin using only one continuous piece of cardboard. This project emphasized scale and proportionality in designs. The violin folds and unfolds together as shown below.

Project 8: Trabeated Structure This project was to design, document and build a basswood model of a building, which incorporates beams and columns of wood or steel as the principal structure. The design concentrated on the main structural components of the building. The building was to be two stories, with a footprint between 60 ft x 96 ft, to 90 ft x 120 and comprising 3 to 6 bays in one direction and 4 to 8 bays in the other direction. The floor-to-floor height was 12 ft. Lastly, the building must have two egress stair towers, as required by code.
