Fishtown/ Northern Liberties Philadelphia Research: Fishtown and Northen Liberties area areas where Philly's culinary, art and music trends have taken off. A 'magnet' for hipsters and creative types, the former working-class neighborhood marks the first Friday of every month by opening the galleries and studios along Frankford Avenue to the public. The vibrant nightlife includes hip bistros, beer gardens and a retro themed architecture. The mix of like-minded residents and entrepreneurs has led to a eccentric network of bars, restaurants and boutiques within neighborhood limits of Girard Avenue and Callowhill Street north and south, the Delaware River and 6th Street east and west.
Norrebro, Copenhagen Research: Norrebro is a hip, multicultural neighborhood, popular amoungst students and creative types. Kebab joints and indie shops line the main road and late-night bars are tucked into the side streets. The perfect place for foodies, as they can head to the highend eateries and trendy coffee spots. The northwestern part of the district is one of the last areas of working class Copenhagers. The town also has a large concentration of middle eastern immigrants and is sometimes known as "little Arabia". The town makes for a lively outing, with many clothing, jewelry, grocery and greengrocery stores to check out.
The age of Norrebro and Northern Liberties/ Fishtown reflects the current status of these communities, Norrebro has become urbanized while Northern Liberties/ Fishtown is being gentrified. All of which has created very diverse mixture of ages, cultures and architecture in each neighborhood.
Fishtown and Northern Liberties are both neighborhoods in Philadelphia where private construction entities are flipping and restoring run down buildings into modern spaces for the community to re-inhabit. This process known as gentrification has brought a younger age group of individuals into the area and competes with locals for their long occupied space.
Norrebro is a neighborhood in Copenhagen where old architecture has been consistently maintained, this has attracted various cultures to the area and has created a diverse population. This process known as urbanization has multiplied the town's size greatly over time.
The existence of gentrification and urbanization allows for diversity in architecture and demographics to be prominent in these areas.
Norrebro, Copenhagen
Between both maps I choose to highlight the areas that produce the most noise, cost the most to live within and are the most densly populated. As each city has its own unique Infrastructure that sustains its surrounding area, each map allows for its viewer to interpert the many aspects that define these neighborhoods.
Fishown/ Northern Liberties, Philadelphia
As the areas that produce the most noise, cost the most to live within and are heavily populated are focused upon in the maps, their abstract nature does not hinder their viewer's ability to comprehend the illustration due to the use of light line work.
The age of Norrebro and Northern Liberties/ Fishtown reflects the current status of these communities. As Norrebro has become urbanized while Northern Liberties/ Fishtown is currently being gentrified, all of which has created very diverse mixture of ages, cultures and architecture in each neighborhood.
