Welcome to the Spring BABICM Bulletin for our members.

In this edition we will be covering the BABICM annual conference, an update on DoLs, future planned events and other brain injury related news.

BABICM ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2017 A BRAVE NEW WORLD: FROM CRADE TO GRAVE This year's two-day annual conference will focus on all aspects affecting brain injured clients, from children & young people to adults, from birth to death.

Once again we have attracted industry leaders and brain injury experts from across the globe - some of whom rarely speak in the UK. This year's list of eminent speakers includes Christine Croisiaux, Andrew Curran, Sue Lukersmith and Dr Howard Fine.

Case Managers, healthcare professionals, deputies and litigators are all welcome to attend.

2ND INTERNATIONAL CASE MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE 11th & 12th May 2017 Nottingham This joint conference will host international speakers from Australia, Germany and the USA reflecting on their experiences and participating in interactive panel discussions.

UK Keynote speakers from central policy bodies will provide an update on current and future developments in the government’s rehabilitation agenda.

BISWG & BASW PUBLICATION The Brain Injury Social Work Group (BISWG) and the British Association of Social Work (BASW) have produced and published Brain Injury Practice Guidance for Social Workers.

This is a short publication which highlights the main problems caused by brain injury; Issues that may arise during assessment and refers to legislation which must be taken into account. It also signposts users to website with more information and provides a case study.

BRAIN INJURY & HOMELESSNESS: YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE! The link between brain injury and homelessness is complex and BABICM is interested in your experiences as case managers of working in this area.

UPDATE: DEPRIVATION OF LIBERTIES (DoLS) Tim Spencer-Lane, Law Commission Lawyer, Public Law Team Unfortunately, the publication of the final report and draft bill was delayed. The reason for the delay was the complexity of the task of drafting legislation on such an important issue.

It was vitally important to get the law right here. Badly drafted, over-complicated law is a big part of the problem with the current DoLS, and we did not want to fall into the same trap again.

We were very aware that the project deadline was brought forward at the request of the Department of Health and for a good reason: there is an urgent need for the system to be improved. We know too that many stakeholders were waiting for our report and draft Bill and would be disappointed with any delay. For this we apologise.

I am pleased to now inform you that the Law Commission’s report Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty has been published. In it we recommend that the DoLS should be replaced with a new scheme – which we have called the Liberty Protection Safeguards. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your contribution to the project.

Consultation and the on-going involvement of stakeholders has been essential in shaping our final recommendations.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS ON PAEDIATRIC BRAIN INJURY Second International Conference on Paediatric Acquired Brain Injury New Strategies to Improve Outcome & Quality of Life.

2017 Abstracts Due: 10 April, 2017 Abstracts are now being accepted for the Second International Conference on Paediatric Acquired Brain Injury!

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a global event that brings together all those involved in the identification, treatment, and prevention of brain injury of children, adolescents, and young adults.

All professionals with an interest in the development of innovative treatments for paediatric brain injuries are encouraged to submit an abstract of their work to this international event and meeting of minds.

All submissions will be reviewed by a planning committee of internationally recognised panel of brain injury experts.

BABICM CQC FORUM An event for CQC registered managers to share their experiences of the registration and inspection process. T. Alex Rook, Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, will also cover Mental Capacity & Deprivation of Liberties and The Care Act in practice.

SOCIAL MEDIA TRAINING Jeff Goodright returns to lead this popular event to be hosted in Edinburgh. The course will cover digital footprints, weaknesses in these footprints and ways to reduce risks for you and your clients on social media.

NEW & WOULD BE BRAIN INJURY CASE MANAGER WORKSHOP (PART ONE) This training is aimed at new case management practitioners and those thinking about making the leap. This popular workshop, hosted in London will be led by two highly experienced traumatic brain injury case managers

SLEEP, ANXIETY & FATIGUE IN ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY Sleep, anxiety & fatigue management is an issue for many case managers in their work with brain injured individuals. This one-day workshop is ideal for all brain injury case managers to help them address these common concerns for clients of all ages. The workshop will be held in Manchester city centre.

ADVANCED WORKSHOP This FREE event is ideal for registered practitioners who are looking to apply for Advanced membership status.

It will guide you through the application, how you need to prepare and what happens on the day of your review.

BEYOND BEGINNINGS: NEW & WOULD BE WORKSHOP (PART TWO) This is perfect for those who have completed our 'New & Would Be' Workshop (Part One) and starting their case management journey. The sessions will cover the litigation process, terminology, tricky issues and how the clinical work of case managers fits into the mix. Hosted in Birmingham.

THE LIFE OF P

This event took place on the 9th February 2017 and was very well attended.

The event story followed the life of P from when she was injured at nine years old; through her settlement, disputes with her family, her relationships, marriage, children and property, to her employment and the challenging behaviour she displayed. Â Thanks to the excellent feedback provided by delegates of the first class topics and presenters (who provided an informative and thought provoking day), the Training and Events Group is considering running a similar event in the not so distant future.
