Entrance

Desaleng Eneway Desaleng Eneway was born in Addis Ababa, he attended his art education at Enlightenment Art Academy where he is educated painting mainly from 2000-2004 E.C, he also graduated from ETVE collage majored in sculpture from the department of fine art. Inanition he studied Architecture and urban planning at Unity University. Currently he is a full time studio artist.

Entrance

Frew Kebede Frew Kebede was born in 1985 in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. He went to study Industrial Design at the Addis Ababa University Alle School of Fine Arts and Design and graduated with a BFA in 2006. He then graduated with an M.F.A. in African Intellectual History and Cultural Studies in 2008 at the Mega School of Music, Wall Africa Jazz Mender (WAFA) specializing in Piano, Classical Music and Jazz. In both Ethiopian Institutions the artist acquired the fundamental fine arts and music principles while working on exploring his creative side. His artworks have been highlighted in a several local exhibitions.

Lobby

Addis Gezahegn Addis Gezahegn was born in 1979 in Addis Ababa. He graduated from the Addis Ababa University, Alle School of Fine Arts and Design with Diploma in Graphic Design. In 2011, he returned to the school and graduated with a BFA from the same department. Addis has had four solo shows and participated in thirteen group shows in Ethiopia and one in New York. Addis has been a studio artist at the Ethiopiawi Art Studio since 2001.

Lobby

Dereje Demissie Dereje is a full time artist at Nubia Visual Art Studio; a studio he co-owns since 2003 with his wife and fellow artist Merikokeb. He studied at the Addis Ababa University Alle School of Fine Arts and Design specializing in mural art, graduating in 2002 - he went back to Alle to specialize in painting, graduating in 2012. Dereje’s signature mural art designs can be found in many establishments around Addis Ababa - notably within the Boston and Partners building. He also worked as a painting instructor at Mat Fine Art Academy in Addis Ababa. Dereje illustrated numerous UNICEF posters between the years 2002 and 2005. In 2006, he designed the Nile Development Forum poster under the theme ‘’The Role of the Nile in Poverty Reduction and Economic Development in the Basin”. In 2008, his 100 meter street painting displayed in Meskel Square in Addis Ababa - ‘Stop early marriage’ - commemorated the International Women’s day. Dereje won the first prize for the United Nations Population Fund International Poster Contest of ‘Population and the Environment’ in 1992.

Rukmini Nyce Originally from Los Angeles, California, Rukmini has lived overseas with her family the past 13 years. Ethiopia is their fifth country and second African posting. She fell in love with weaving in Santiago, Chile is where she learned to weave primarily on a frame loom. She prides herself on connecting cultures with her artwork as in this hand-woven piece, which is a blend of South American wool and Ethiopian cotton. She exhibits her work at St. George Art Gallery in Addis Ababa.

Lobby

Ancient Ethiopian room dividers separating the religious from the living areas of the home. The dividers are made of large Cedars which are very rare to find. This unique pieces are Eight in total and have made their journey all the way from South Africa to grace the lobby of Hyatt regency Addis Ababa.

Tadesse Mesfin Winner of the 1998 prestigious Mid-American Arts Alliance (MAAA) fellowship, Tadesse Mesfin was born in Weldia, Ethiopia in 1953. He attended the Addis Ababa University School of Fine Arts and Design where he was taught by Gebre Kristos Desta, receiving a Diploma with a distinction. He then attended the Repin Academy of Painting, Architecture & Sculpture in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1984, where he graduated with Honours in a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Painting. Tadesse Mesfin has spent the last thirty-three years teaching at the Alle School of Fine Art, where he has influenced a generation of painters including, Addis Gezehagn, Dawit Abebe, and Merikokeb Berhanu.

Adiskidan Ambaye Adiskidan Ambaye was born in Addis Ababa in 1977 and grew up in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. She attended elementary and secondary school at the Notre Dame Catholic School. In 1992, she left for Germany for further education. After this she continued her education for four and half years in Frankfurt, Germany, where she had the opportunity to exhibit her art in 1996. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in 2002.

Behailu Bezabih Behailu Bezabih was born in 1960 in Addis Ababa, where he now lives and works. He has a Master’s degree in Fine and Applied Arts. He is currently a lecturer at Addis Ababa University. Beyond his love of popular culture and his mingling with the contemporary life of the people, he shows an abiding interest in both the historical and traditional iconography of Ethiopia and Africa.

The Kitchen

Kohar Kevorkian Kohar Kevorkian is an Armenian Ethiopian artist. She attended the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts from 1995 to 1997 where she received her degree. She is also certified from the Regent Academy of Fine Arts in London in fashion design. Kohar also attended pottery making course in Armenia the years 20082009 under the supervision of Mr. Samvel Baghdasaryan Director of National Center of Aesthetics of Department of Fine Arts Dean of Armenian Open University. She engages in interior design and decorating thought her company “Final Touch.” She also ventures in other art forms such as home furnishings and accent pieces like wooden sculptures, mirrors, candle holders, pottery, leather cushions, leather bags, different lighting designs and tables. Her signature piece of art is the classic African Comb or “Mido.”

Tibebe Terffa Tibebe Terffa was born in the walled city of Harar, Ethiopia in 1948. He studied at the Addis Ababa School of Fine Art from where he graduated in painting in 1973. During his school years (19701973), Tibebe and his friends formed the Sixteen Young Artists Association to stage exhibitions around the country. Tibebe worked as an art instructor at the Medhane Alem Comprehensive High School in Harar from 1973 until 1980. In 1981, he moved to Addis Ababa, and worked as an illustrator for Kuraz Publishing House until 1983. Since 1984, he has been working as a studio artist from his residence in Addis Ababa. He has also exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions in Ethiopia, Kenya, Germany, Canada, USA, and Spain.

Fasil Assefa Fasil Assefa was born in Addis Ababa on 19 June, 1984. He obtained a Diploma in Drawing and Painting from the Master Fine Arts and Vocational Training Centre in 2002, and completed a Certificate Course from the Abyssinia Fine Arts and Vocational Training Centre in 2003. He graduated from the Addis Ababa University School of Fine Arts and Design in 2007, and then worked as an artist from Dec 2005 March 2007 at the School of Tomorrow, Addis Ababa. His work has been exhibited at local venues such as the Imperial Hotel, the Abyssinia Gallery and the Addis Ababa Museum. Fasil enjoys writing poetry, and has been acknowledged as an Ambassador For Peace by the Universal Peace Federation and Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace.

Dawit Adnew Dawit Adnew was born in Addis Ababa in 1973. After finishing high school, he graduated in 1995 from Addis Ababa University, Alle School of Fine Arts and Design with a degree in Graphic Art. Adnew’s first professional job was in the newly established Adwa textile factory, located in the northern part of the country. There he worked as a printing designer where he implemented flat-form art techniques. Later, he returned to Addis Ababa, and joined the Kitab Studio where the interaction with his friends and colleagues enriched his creative process, and was a critical turning point in his career.

Yihenew Worku Yihenew Worku was born in Addis Ababa, he graduated from Addis Ababa University of fine arts. He has a good experience in illustration and graphic design in different newspapers and several children’s books. He participated in many international cartoons companions some of his work has been published in international catalogs. Yihenew was one of selected from six African illustrators and participated on children’s illustrations workshop at Johannesburg in Feb 2017. “Freedom of Expression” international cartoon contest 2017 in Norway, selected him for Honorable Mention Awards in June 2017.

Tizta Berhanu Tizta Berhanu was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1991 where she has lived and worked her entire life. Tizta developed her passion for painting and drawing at an early age, when she used to copy foreign master paintings and drawings. Her love for drawing led her to study art in a private school called “Enlightenment Art Academy” after two years of formal training she joined AAU (Alle School of Fine Arts and Design) for further studies, where she received her BFA in 2013.

Kerima Ahmed Kerima is a full-time studio artist based in Los Angeles, California. She graduated from the Addis Ababa University School of Fine Art and Design in Painting. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ethiopian Language and Literature. Since her graduation, she has been part of a number of group and solo art exhibitions both locally and abroad. Her work celebrates not only the values of Ethiopian people, but humanity as well. Kerima also contributed to, and helped establish, one of the most prominent artist groups in Addis Ababa: Nubia. Kerima’s paintings featured in this show are non-representational and her approach is reminiscent of the local traditional painting style. Her technique displays the Ethiopian traditional painting attributes like bold outlines, filled geometric shapes, and a limited color palette, and her versatile style recognizes the expressive potential of Ethiopian painting tradition. Her works have been exhibited in a solo show at the C Art Gallery entitled Ethiopian Artist Kerima Ahmed: Values and Dreams as Expressed through Line, Color and Texture, as well as a group show in Seattle. In 2013 and 2014, Kerima’s work was featured at the Ethnic Gallery at the Municipal Tower, Columbia City Art Gallery and Tobya Art Gallery in Seattle.

Tamrat Gezahegn Tamrat was born in 1977 in Addis Ababa. He graduated from Addis Ababa University, Alle School of Fine Arts and Design in 2000 with a Diploma in Painting. He is the founding member of Netsa Art Village which was the most dynamic venue for the flourishing of the contemporary art in Ethiopia destroyed by the government some years ago. In addition to the numerous group and solo exhibitions in Ethiopia, Tamrat has shown his works in south Africa Egypt, Morocco Germany, Spain, USA, UAE and Sweden. Tamrat’s work as an artist ranges from being a landscape and portrait painter to his relentless studio practice and experimentation, as well as his sculpture installations and performances. Currently, his enthusiastic research on indigenous knowledge has inculcated his meditations. Tamrat believes that an artist’s endeavor is just like an enlightened one who enables the culture, the societal knowledge and the aura of the society to be the counterpart life that one lives. He also aspires for his art to be part of the journey that society travels through.
