A people adopts what we now refer to as ‘sustainable’ practices with desire, meaning, and purpose. My growth and explorations in architecture have always centered around purpose - each ray of light cast has a reason for lying on the floor, for leaning against a wall. Natural ventilation is not only a movement of air removing moisture and heat from the skin, it is the experience of a breeze. When we interlock beauty with strategies of ecological living we can create cycles of use with the potential to renew themselves infinitely. Architecture is not about the expressive flair of the designer, the designer’s knowledge is an archive appropriated to overlap fundamental emotional experience and the natural world yielding beautiful, efficient, meaningful space.

When great religious buildings no longer function within their original intentions as spaces of worship, they may be transformed to serve the public’s growing need for spaces of Silence. Through such a transformation, the architectural grandeur of these buildings - the poetic Silence they possess - may be not simply be maintained, it can grow to new social appreciation through respectful design interventions.

The primary access to the city of Charleston, SC is overrun with a rather confusing network of bridges and roadways that divide the Horizon District and Medical University of the South Campus (MUSC). A new master plan proposes a redesigned ‘in-between’ district that promotes Slowness, Connectivity, and Activity for pedestrian use as a formal entry experience for this historic American city. These three concepts work together to introduce the city to incoming traffic while tying together once isolated districts, creating a new economic and cultural urban community.

In urban Los Angeles, individualism reigns supreme - in tourism the same could be said. A disconnect occurs in both between scale and activity, segregating interaction into privileged niches. As an urban intervention, the Echo hotel of Santa Monica praises Los Angeles’s individualism while encouraging communal interaction. The tourist intermingles with the local, along with other guests, creating an opportunity for conversation that strengthens their understanding of Los Angeles and their place within it.

undergr aduate studio i I Lacoste, Provence, France Winter 2009
A long abandoned stone quarry just a few moments’ walk away from the tiny french village of Lacoste is chosen as site for a local history museum. The museum desires to commemorate the village and the quarry itself. Privately leased but still easily accessible to the public, the quarry embodies quite a unique spirit. Across many of its stone walls can be found graffiti of all kinds. These walls exist as a living record of the quarry’s immediate past, where markings of contemporary making can be found adjacent to those of close to two centuries old. It is apparent that this fractured stone wields creative power - that somehow it is yearning for interpretation, for expression, on its behalf.
