TRUE LOVE IS AS SIMPLE AS TWO PATHS MEETING TO BECOME ONE. Like true love, the best photographs are often a journey in themselves, capable of transporting you to a cherished moment frozen in time with the ease of a simple glance. To the right eyes, each photograph has more than meets the eye. They tell quiet stories that resonate loudly in the chambers of the heart with the rememberance of time spent together. Taken with the heart, and not the eyes, they carry tales of steps taken down new paths with each other, and of love that has no rival in richness, nor resplendence. We believe that with just a dash of imagination and an abundance of sincerity, these little moments can become the grandest statements of passion, affection, and devotion. We are here because you are in love.

HELLO JOIN US IN OUR JOURNEY OF LOVE, HOPE, AND TRIUMPH. Time is a peculiar phenomenon. The moment we feel we have time on our hands, it just whizzes past us with such gusto and here we are with our second issue of Ideal Weddings. Though we would very much like to dwell in the glory of our first issue, change and progress are aspects that we welcome with open arms. In our second issue, we have embraced change and revamped the entire look of Ideal Weddings. It dawned on us when we took a good look at each and every member of our team that we are the new generation; we are the newaged millennials. The new and improved appearance of our magazine depicts our mien as individuals and as a team. We want to create new perspectives and awareness on all things wedding related for you. We have taken the liberty to share makeup products from Bare Minerals, a brand that prides itself in not indulging in any activities that harm animals. It is easy to overlook morals and ethics in the hopes

of meeting the standards of beauty set in motion by society. We show you that it is plausible to keep animal cruelty at bay and have yourself looking drop dead gorgeous. In our styled shoot with Kelvin from Lightedpixels Photography, we had the opportunity to work with horses – an ode to grace and magnificence. Drawing inspiration from the film and fashion icon, Audrey Hepburn, we explore the beauty in modesty and at the same time, empowerment – everything that she as a legend stands for. In your efforts to plan a beautiful wedding, remember the reasons to why you’re starting out on this new journey. You demonstrate love by giving it unconditionally to yourself. Start with the person in the mirror and your married life will follow suit without a hitch. The article ‘Every word you say’ explores a plethora of ways through which you can form a strong and ever-lasting bond with your significant other. At the end of the day, that is all that matters.

“To embracing change, finding acceptance and appreciating the ones you love!”

a spellbound mystery BEHIND THE SCENES

Into the Woods is a 2014 American musical fantasy film with a modern twist that blends fairy tales and portrays dark, foreboding and disturbing perspectives on them. The colour scheme and the visuals in the film depict the woods to be a deep, dark and delicate sanctuary. Deep crimson red tones, rustic magic potion bottles, books of ancient secrets – all of these exude an oddly charming allure to the darker side of the worldly realm. Though the theme of the film is a little gloomy and obscure, there is a positive underlying message to take away. We cannot act in isolation for we can accomplish individually only a fraction of the things we can accomplish communally. It is only when we start accepting each other’s faults and acknowledging each other’s strengths, we can join together to combat the giants that face us all.

Our styled shoot was planned with Into the Woods in mind. Drawing inspirations from the dark yet vibrant colours, the shoot turned out to be quite a stunner. Working with Douglas and Kelvin from Avenue 8: Photographers + Videographers, showed us what it means to be a natural behind the lenses. Their professionalism and keen eye for details truly show in the images they produced. Starting the day as early as 5.30am together with the talented makeup artist, Jenny from Autelier Makeup and hairstylist, Fiona from Salon Vim, we persevered till the evening sun was upon us. We worked with Jessica from Wedrock Weddings who orchestrated the beautiful rustic set up with flowers from The Bloom Room, props from Styled Story, cake and stationery from Cupplets. The sense of accomplishment we felt at the end of the shoot was like no other. The breathtaking images truly speak for themselves.

UNDER THE UMBRELLA wO r d s by s s h a a l e n i

In most Chinese weddings, we see the bride being ushered to the wedding car while being sheltered under a red umbrella. Ever wondered what this umbrella symbolises? We spoke with experts from Le Knot, a traditional Chinese wedding shop, to explain the meaning behind this red umbrella. Many customs in a traditional Chinese wedding are said to be done to bless the couple with many children and grandchildren. The opening of the umbrella is no different as it symbolises the bride bringing many descendants to the groom’s family. Shielding her under the umbrella is believed to protect the bride from any evil influences. This custom also symbolises blessing the bride with good shelter for the rest of her married life. After walking the bride to the wedding car, the umbrella is brought with the bride to usher her into the groom’s house as well to complete the ritual of her being safe and secure and blessing her with many offspring. EVERY WORD YOU SAY LIGHTEDPIXELs PHOTOGRAPHY WORDS S SHAALENI ‘You demonstrate love by giving it unconditionally to yourself. And, as you do, you attract others into your life who are able to love you without conditions.’ –Paul Ferrini There are many books out there teaching you how to love your partner and how to build a successful marriage but limited light is shed on how important it is to love yourself before getting married and how crucial communication is in a marriage. While researching on various authors and their books for an idea for writing a relationship article, I found myself drawn to this one particular book. The ideas that are talked about in this book are very real and relatable. I have taken the liberty to share more of what you need to know before you read the book. The journey to greatness begins with knowing and accepting who you really are. To find joy and contentment, it’s necessary to go within the essence

036 / STYLE

of your being. To find acceptance, you must learn the many aspects of yourself and embrace the diversity within you. Succumbing to fear, worthlessness, envy and a compulsive need to please others interferes with your ability to love yourself and your partner. It is possible to find the ‘flawless’ beauty in you. It takes more than just looking into that proverbial mirror; you need to develop a high regard for what you see which may not always be the easiest thing to do. Before you can grow to love and appreciate others, you must learn to see the essence of you in good light. The danger in not realising your own worth before entering a serious commitment is that you can be placed in a situation of not necessarily making the best decisions for yourself. Often those who do not see the value in themselves, engage in relationships that they otherwise would not be a part of. Authentic love starts with a connection to the self and the accomplishment of what you had intended to have done in your relationship. Your promised words become your duty. It is this very duty that makes you responsible and accountable. The principles that this love is based on are carried into action on a consistent and continual basis. Love is the ultimate law of the universe. It is inspiration in the creative process. It is not simply an emotion that drives your impulses. It is decisive. Marriage encounters changes constantly. It evolves and grows. Without proper nurturing and careful

attention, it can and will deteriorate. If you take one thing to heart as you embark on this phase of your life with your chosen partner, let it be this: you have to work on your marriage every day if you want your relationship with your spouse to remain strong. You should take a look at your spouse and see them in the proper light and perspective while providing a support system to help them grow and become a better person.

angry mind. Retreat from the situation and create your own space before responding to the situation. Being able to hold steady at this point gives you the freedom to salvage the situation instead of blindly spewing profanities and hurtful words at each other. You will reach a point with practice, where you can clearly hear yourself thinking – why is this happening? Looking at it from a third party’s point of view it will indeed paint you a clearer picture.

However, the care and concern that you give in the marriage need to include nurturing yourself to bring your best self to the relationship. The sign of a healthy marriage is a better you.

Tear down barriers When situations get unruly, our barriers and walls shoot right up to the ceiling presenting a hardexterior façade that prevents us from understanding the other person and from being understood. This is a defence mechanism that most people adopt in arguments to limit getting hurt. Erecting barriers strengthens the separation between the sense of ‘me’ and ‘you’ and hence making it difficult to ameliorate the relationship between each other. Stay open to the feelings you’re going through and let the difficult times open you humble you and make you wiser and braver.

Four tips to better communicate with your partner Keys to Mindful Communication by Susan Gillis Chapman highlights the elements that make it possible for us to listen more deeply and to develop greater clarity and confidence in responding to others. The author, founder of Greenlight Communications – a mindful communication training institute, is a marriage and family therapist who has been studying and teaching mindfulness and awareness meditation for over 30 years. Silence It’s almost human nature to get frustrated and defensive in an argument. We let the emotions get the better of us. To transform the roots of aggression, we need to know the difference between the emotion of sadness and the racing thoughts created in an

STYLE / 037

Words of encouragement Be kind in the choice of words. If there is no need to be cynical or nasty, don’t be. It’s not to say that you cannot get upset or angry. You can express your feelings, however, choose your words thoughtfully. In times when your partner needs support, shower them with words of encouragement. Realise that in a relationship, you are each other’s pillars of strength. At certain moments, words are nothing; it is in the tone in which they are uttered. The tone in which we speak is of utmost importance. Responding Going into a conversation, there is only one reality that a person can be sure of: you can know what your own thoughts, feelings and perceptions are. You can be sure of nothing else: not the other person’s thoughts, feelings or perceptions; not even the reality of what is going on between the two of you. This is where you listen to what the other person has to say. Don’t be hasty and jump to have your voice heard. Take a minute to listen to the person in front of you and then, respond accordingly. Respond, not react. Understand their perspectives before giving your two cents worth to the conversation.

THEIR STOR Y With glass slippers that encased only her feet, Cinderella rediscovered the princess she could be. At Sinderella, they illuminate the path to the discovery of every woman’s hidden princess and the fulfillment of her every desire. Sinderella has been in the industry since year 2008. They believe in fulfilling every woman’s desire to be any princess through a pair of heels - the fashion staple to complete any outfit.

048 / THEIR STORY

Find the pair of shoes which best resonates your style as they spoil you with choices from their pre-fabricated designs. If their designs are missing that small speck of who you are, take it a step further and revel in the fun of customisation! Choose from their diverse selection of fabrics, colours, heel heights and heel types to fashion a pair of shoes that is uniquely you! There are plans for creating more in-house design on heels and ornaments. By then, brides will get to customise their ornaments too. They have a range of samples on display. Brides may pick them up or they can mix and match from their design elements catalogue to their style, likings of the wedding theme. Heels and platforms can be in different colours from the shoe. Colour selections can be done from their fabric catalogue. A planning tip If you are a bride who is focusing on comfort, go for an open-toe or strappy design with softer fabrics. A sling back design will help in preventing blisters as well! For pretty shoes lovers, if you are looking for very tall heels for sexier legs or to match your groom’s outfit, you may want to consider having a slightly higher platform. Better yet, you have the luxury to decorate your platform how ever you please to match your shoes. v

THE KOREAN ALLURE WORDS S SHAALENI

K-pop, K-drama and of course the pop phemomenon ‘Gangnam Style’ are the first few things that come to mind when you think of Korean influence. With the inexorable diffusion of Korean culture in Singapore, the Korean beauty craze has gone past the point of being a novelty to becoming a regular part of beauty conversation. This is a city—nay, a culture—that believes in a millionstep skincare regimen and very minimal makeup. They’ve dominated the skincare game for centuries, but it wasn’t until Koreans incepted, perfected, and popularised BB cream that cosmetics companies throughout the world have been hawk-eyeing their makeup innovations, too. We have taken the liberty to speak with Eesha Ke, from EK Makeup Studio to enrich us on her tips and tricks on the art of Korean Makeup! Eesha Ke, stylist director of EK Makeup Studio, has been immersed in the beauty industry for over 17 years. She has acquired her pertinent hair and makeup skillset in Japan, Taiwan and Korea. Her makeup philosophy is to understand and observe the features and character of the bride before deciding on the kind of makeup to enhance her look further.

Skin Korean makeup style is one that stems from the desire to achieve the natural look of a child. A child’s skin - one that is youthful, radiant and in prime condition is exactly what Korean makeup achieves. Always hydrate your skin. Start applying facial masks at least one month prior to your actual day. Singapore’s weather conditions are harsh on our skin. Hence, constantly protect your skin from the sun with sunblock and also, adopt a healthier diet to achieve optimal skin conditions.

072 / GET THE LOOK

MAKEUP Foundation The most essential factor of makeup is the application of foundation. Korean makeup focuses on finding the right kind of foundation and to apply it with the right techniques to avoid cracks and to prevent it from easily fading away. Eyes Having trained in Taiwan, Japan and Korea, Eesha’s makeup style is not solely Korean. She incorporates the different aspects of makeup styles from the different countries that she has trained in. The technique that Eesha adopts to achieve a double eye-lid look is adapted from Taiwan. It goes beyond simply pasting a sticker; it involves using fake lashes to give that fuller double eye-lid look.

Hair Korean curls are usually achieved through techniques that result in a softer look. The Korean Curls are more natural-looking and feminine. It is mainly about the techniques and the difference in chemicals and tools used. The best part is that it doesn’t leave your hair dry and frizzy in the process. Hairstyle with Korean curls also has a focus on volume of hair and frames the face in a flattering manner. If you want to achieve the Korean curls, ensure that your hair is layered. When there are layers in your hair, the curls are more definitive. Another factor that affects the visibility of the curls is your hair colour. Eesha advices her clients to dye their hair fully to a lighter shade in order for the curls to be more prominent. Before your wedding day and prior to styling your hair, go for hair treatments – deep moisturising treatments to give your hair volume and a good shine.

As a leading makeup company, brides can expect just about all the staple makeup services including actual day, solemnisations, engagements, pre-weddings and makeup for family, bridesmaids and friends. Aside from their bridal team, Autelier Group has plans to expand their current 2000 square feet studio to include even more offerings to remain a leader. This includes training facilities, expanding their overseas offerings and perhaps even in the not so distant future, expansions into other parts of Asia where similar cultures and values exist. A planning tip From the moment he proposes- and past the excitement of course - comes a very heavy task of getting everything in order. While it might seem easy to leave everything into the hands of a planner, it is crucial to know what matters most and not settle for any less because as they all say “it is probably the biggest event thus far in your life”. On makeup, it’s always a good idea to consult your artist early so that they know exactly what your preferences are! 10 things to know before you choose your wedding ring WORDS S SHAALENI

The big day has been set, and now you have tons of wedding preparations to attend to preparing the guest list, looking for a caterer, shopping for the perfect wedding dress, and a lot more. All of these are essential in putting together a memorable wedding, but the most important thing on the top of your checklist, is choosing a perfect wedding ring. We spoke to Sandra from Fairy’s Inc, a jewellery boutique that has been around since 2002 creating unique designs for each special couple, to share with us tips on finding the right wedding ring!

To match or not to match It is not a must to match your engagement ring with your wedding band but if you do wish to, check with your jeweller how you can go about achieving that. Do you want your wedding ring to have the same band material as your engagement ring? Or would you like the same kind of diamonds embedded along your wedding band? There are many possible ways to match your rings. Discuss with your partner and your jeweller on the best way how. Make it your own This piece of jewellery is probably the only jewellery you would wear for a lifetime so make it as personal as you can. Think of unique ways to make it special to you and your spouse. Do not get caught up with keeping up with the trends as they come and go but instead, aim for a ring design that is timeless in your eyes. Keep your lifestyle in mind You need to keep in mind that you will wear this band every day. You should decide on a ring that fits into your life without disruption. If you have any allergies to certain metals, talk to your jeweller for recommendations. If your work or lifestyle is more hands on, share with your jeweller and ask for advice on a more practical design that is fuss-free or rather, learn how to maintain your beautiful ring. Choose the right size Note that most of the time, you won’t be removing your ring. You’ll be wearing it through different seasons, pregnancies and there might be weight gain or weight loss – so be smart in choosing a size that can last you through (literally) thick and thin. Know the quality It cannot be emphasised enough that with all rings, you need to check for quality. Customised rings are usually made to your size and having it not heavily altered is more favourable. The quality of the diamonds used will determine how shiny your rings appear.

Work out a budget When it comes to wedding planning, always keep a budget for every aspect. Wedding bands remain with you after the wedding and so set a reasonable amount for them. The usual range can be from $2500 to about $5000 for a pair of wedding bands. Hence, set a price range for the wedding rings and ensure that you find a jeweller who can work with your allocated budget.

Protect your jewellery Daily wear is definitely prone to wear and tear, and even scratches. Try not to wear them during strenuous exercise or when moving heavy objects. Have a good jeweller who will be able to take care of your ring for years to come.

Choosing the right metal Wedding band is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand of both the bride and groom. It is traditionally a full circle with no beginning and no end to signify the continuous commitment to one another. It’s usually made from different shades of 18k gold or platinum, although it can be made from some other combination of metals. Try not to get pure gold or pure platinum as they are too soft and not durable for wedding bands.

Grow with your ring As you grow in your marriage and cross various milestones, you can weave those intimate memories into your ring designs later in your marriage. Fairy’s Inc takes pride in being part of your growth as a couple and is able to add on details to your wedding bands. There are many ways to innovate your ring – you can add on an anniversary ring, engrave the names of your children, or even adorn on more diamonds as the years go by.

Research on designs Keep an open mind. You can share your preferences with jewellers. No idea is silly. Share, laugh and enjoy the process of creating your own design. It doesn’t have to be obvious to the world but the subtle details will always be visible to you and ultimately, that is all that should matter. Fairy’s Inc has created many one in a million designs for couples over the years. So, don’t be afraid to be as creative as you want.

HEAVENLY BLOOMS LAVANDER LOVE FLORIST WORDS S SHAALENI Each bloom has the potential to elicit a genuine smile on our faces. Flowers make intimate connections and mitigate the inhibitations to engage the heart and the soul. Lavender Love Florist graciously shows us how to assemble a simple yet artfully arranged bouquet. Aiming to achieve a classy and elegant appeal, Eve from Lavender Love Florist chose to create a traditional dome-shaped bouquet with a vintage purple and pink theme. Keeping the varieties simple, pale purple and pink roses were used, accentuated with some silver leaves to evoke the vintage feel. Other flowers that can be utilised include white rose, white spray rose and light pink astilbe. Tip: Put the bouquet in a vase and an air-con room to keep fresh. 100 / 5 STEPS PROCESS

Step 2: Start with a larger purple rose as the center piece. Add in one stalk of flower at a time slanting it at a 45-degree angle. This is called the spiraling method.

Step 3: Hold the bouquet at the binding point - around 15cm below the flower head, and rotate the bouquet clockwise to add more flowers around the center point rose.

Step 4: Continue to lace on flowers to achieve a desired bouquet size in a domed shape.

Step 5: Secure the stems with the florist tape then conceal the tape with a satin ribbon. Trim the ends of the stems.

what’s to know about wedding cakes

choosing the right cake WORDS S SHAALENI

Wedding cake shopping is no doubt the most delicious part of planning but it’s not always a piece of cake. Getting a show-stopping cake to feed 200 or 300 of your nearest and dearest is not a task for the faint-hearted and neither is it a must for you to make such a grand statement with your wedding cake. My Fat Lady Cakes & Bakes specialises in deluxe custom cakes and cupcakes. Inspired by vintage illustrations and your life stories, their cakes truly speak to every dessert lover. Edna Pan, the founder and the lady of My Fat Lady Cakes & Bakes, started this in 2010 with a single vision to give people a taste of the good old days when cakes were made by hand and with the extra ingredient of (yeah, you guessed it!) love. Let’s hear from Edna, the lady of My Fat Lady Cakes & Bakes on the different factors that play a part in a wedding cake.

Make it your own. We have to first understand the couple and their vision for their wedding cake. Is it to be served as dessert for all guests at the wedding banquet, or just a small souvenir for the couple during the ROM, or is it the centre piece on the dessert table, etc? Thereafter, we can propose designs that depict the couple’s personality accurately. Tick tock on the clock. We first prepare the batter(s), followed by baking the cake layers, frosting the cake layers to form individual tiers and finally, the exterior decorations as well as assembling the tiers if it’s a tiered cake. It usually takes a minimum of three days, excluding the cake decorations. There’s a lot of time allocation to things that customers are not aware of e.g. the extensive time taken to cool the cake, frost and chill the cake and leaving the cake to set.

102 / THE BIG QUESTION

Magic ingredients. We are pretty traditional when it comes to ingredients - just the everyday ingredients like flour, sugar, eggs and milk. No fancy chemicals or preservatives! We like it homemade, and prefer using natural flavourings like fruit puree, butter instead of margarine - this is one of the factors that affects the cake prices too. Details, details and details. Depending on the cake design, icing decorations can be as simple as buttercream rose swirls, filigree done using royal icing or as complicated as sugar modelling (having wedding couple toppers modelled after the couple themselves), or cascading sugar florals. Alternatively, customers can also opt for fresh florals, or have their own toppers that they feel have some significance to them. Fondant or Buttercream? That’s the question. The difference between soft-icing and hard-icing based cakes is that soft-icing based refers to cakes frosted with buttercream, with décor done in a mix of cream and fondant ingredients whilst hard-icing based refers to cakes frosted with a layer of chocolate and then the final layer of fondant, with décor done in fondant or royal icing. As far as budget and taste are concerned, soft-icing based cakes are preferred to hard-icing based cakes. However, soft-icing based cakes require refrigeration and can only last about 2 hours in an ambient temperature whereas hard-icing based cakes can last overnight in an air-conditioned environment. Decide on the theme of your wedding together with your partner and pick out the different aspects that brought you together as a couple. Think of various ways to make your wedding cake special. The important factor is that the cake and its glorious design have a significant meaning to you on your wedding day.

love on the radio broadcast over FM, here they go again on a journey of love.

City to paradise in no time at all – this ought to be the tagline of W Hotel Sentosa. Tucked away from the mainland’s business district, the lush greenery and lively coastal setting of Sentosa easily infects its guests with the contagious spirit of the Island. It’s no wonder, Power 98 Radio DJ, Justin Jerald Ko better known as JK had his heart set on saying ‘I do’ to the woman of his dreams at Sentosa, Singapore’s very own well kempt nirvana.

from Vion. ‘It was as if it was fated to be’, reminisced JK. Hearing this, without missing a beat, Vion interjected in ‘No, you added me as a friend. Just admit it!’ The friendly banter between these two lovebirds is the key to witnessing the essence of their relationship – one filled with joy, laughter and lots of sassy back and forth.

With one of the most recognised faces and perhaps the loudest voice, JK is known to have the most outgoing personality and a very twisted sense of humour (in the good sense, of course!). Entertaining on set and in person, JK and his wife, Vion were a delight to interview!

‘Will you marry me?’ V: The proposal was held at the same cinema where we had our first date with friends and family involved. I was told that it was a client meeting at Cathay and we were seated in the theatre. At first, I had no idea but once I heard JK’s voice in the theatre through the sound system, I was like ‘OMG it is happening now!’

JK needs no introduction with his charismatic and exuberant personality as he sets the mood for us all to start our day on a high note in his The Power Breakfast show from 6am to 10am on weekdays. Since 2010, he has been rocking the airwaves and hosting countless events. Gaining popularity and climbing up his career ladder isn’t all that JK has been busy with.

Do you have any tips for lads thinking of proposing to their girlfriends? V: I think it is important to know what your girlfriend likes and wants. Then plan accordingly. I would have been upset if he hadn’t included my friends and family in the proposal. Everybody’s reaction will be different so don’t be fixated on getting a certain kind of response.

Three years ago, JK met Vion (his now wife) at a friend’s wedding, however there was no form of communication between them at the wedding. A few days later, he was browsing through Facebook, chanced upon Vion’s profile and he swears till date that he did not send her a friend request but a few hours later, he gets a notification saying ‘Friend request accepted’

Share with us about your wedding day. JK: We had many different videos on our wedding day and they were mostly flashbacks, memories and anecdotes about us. The videos were divided into four parts – childhood, growing up, university and working life. Guests enjoyed the videos as they depict the transition into the different stages of our lives.

104 / F EAT U R E S TO R Y

All the speeches by our best friends were more storybased. I had a vision for our wedding – for it to be engaging and solely about our love story. The videos and speeches aided me to convey the tales of our individual and couple lives. I also involved my radio colleagues to be presenters for introducing the various videos and speeches. V: Oh, and he sang to me – Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran! It was awesome to have JK plan the details out then I just had to show up and get married. (laughs heartily) It was as though I was the groom and he was the bride. Tell us about the vendors involved in the wedding. JK: I chose Kelvin from Lightedpixels Photography. I have a confession – I actually stalked him since my Uni days. He is simply amazing at what he does. I’ve hosted many weddings so I’ve seen my fair share of photographers and what I dislike is how they sometimes, get in the way of the wedding. But Kelvin was simply floating around effortlessly and capturing all the precious and real moments without causing any interruptions. Little peak into JK & Vion. What do you love about each other? JK: She keeps me grounded and down to earth. She’s also very real and unpretentious. Since we are the same age and grew

up in the same era, we have similar tastes and we get each other’s lingo which makes the air very comfortable between us. Basically, she’s just someone who totally gets me. V: My favourite thing about him is that he’s big hearted and kind. A lot of people are charming ad smart but I think it’s difficult to find someone who is genuinely kind. Also, he’s very sweet to my family. JK: But of course, I’m also charming and smart. (chijmed in brazenly). Now, how about you tell us what you dislike about each other? V: Yes!! I was waiting for this! (laughs cheekily). JK: She’s impatient, nags a lot about trivial things. V: He’s easily flustered. He gets paranoid and worries about things a little too much. What do you think is the essence of your relationship? JK: Trust and patience. V: Spending time and showing love to one another. Shed some light on marriage and planning for a wedding. V: Go for vendors whom you’re comfortable with and go for the full service as you want to enjoy your day and have a memorable wedding. JK: It will be a very stressful day so brace yourselves. The best thing you can hear from vendors is ‘no problem’. If you’re attending weddings before yours, don’t just go for the food! Focus on the good and bad parts of the wedding.

F E AT U R E S TO R Y / 1 0 7

Marriage Advice. V: Marriage and relationship are different. Everything becomes more real so put in more effort and being more forgiving in a marriage is important. JK: You will see each other in the most vulnerable light. Be patient and trust your partner. A look into the future. As a newly wed couple, the passion and zest that JK and Vion have for each other lies deep within the ethos of their relationship. They hope to have three children – two boys and one girl sometime in the future to create their own nest of love and joy. Being an epitome of quirky characters, JK and Vion have their hearts intertwined and are unequivocally the embodiment of the maxim – made for each other. Seek proper advice before purchasing the unit. Biggest misconception. The biggest misconception people have about Feng Shui is that you have to spend lots of money to buy tons of ornaments for a Feng Shui audit. If we go back to the Ancient Feng Shui Classics, pure Feng Shui is all about location and direction only. If a certain area has bad energy, we may need to place some cures, but those are elemental cures and can be incorporated into the design of the house so that it will invisible to the eye and not turn the house into a Chinese temple! Words of wisdom. The main door, which is the most important factor, governs the house’s Feng Shui, and it cannot be changed after buying the house. Hence, getting it right from the start is very important. It is better to do Feng Shui before renovation when the new house is empty as we can ensure that all the key placements are done correctly right from the start.

style it right

Ichiro Films approach wedding videography like a TV production with copious amount of styling.

Be prepared. Couples should find videographers early. When you decide on a videographer earlier, we can come up with a concept shoot for your wedding together – maybe a save the dates video or even a funfilled one to include your bridesmaids and groomsmen. More ideas can be generated together. When meeting a videographer, share your thoughts with us and we can try to suggest creative ideas to bring out your love story.

Website: www.ichirofilms.com

The biggest misconception. Most people may not understand the amount of work that goes into post production. The biggest challenge is editing under pressure. Five or six hours of editing is barely sufficient for same-day-edits but we take pride in being able to edit a video that captures an array of emotions throughout the morning celebration, with all the individual quirks of the couple intact!

Introduction. With more than eight years of experience, Chris and Why Keen have witnessed the different stages in the evolution of wedding videography. Let’s hear from these industry experts on wedding videography in today’s age. Things to keep in mind. Passion for their work. When you meet them in person, you can see if they truly care about their work. You need to be able to connect and communicate with them well as videos are meant to tell a story. Changes in the wedding scene. In our eight years of experience, the wedding videography has evolved from a straightforward and event coverage style to a more romantic angle and now it is trending towards a bolder and more out-of-the-box style to cater to the new age couples.

Words of wisdom. Couples should remember that a wedding is an event but a marriage lasts a lifetime. Marriage is a lot of work. Life together does not stop after a wedding. There is couplehood, and parenthood, to look forward to.

The Aisle Bridal is constantly upgrading their trends to be in the forefront of the bridal fashion.

Website: www.theaislebridal.com.sg Introduction. Co-founder of The Aisle Bridal, Yvonne Wong, a gown designer and wedding planner, taps on her daily life for inspirations and ideas for her bridal gown collections. Begin your wedding journey by reading the following tips from Yvonne on finding the right bridal boutique for your special day! First thing to do. Before you make an appointment with a bridal boutique, take your time to do some gown research. While you should be clear about what you definitely do not want, you should also have an idea of what you’re really looking for. If possible , choose a wedding date and wedding venue. Couples should calculate their budget for wedding expenses as well.

service. We always break down the whole timeline and procedures for couples. Changes in the bridal scene. In this age of technology, the bridal industry is always evolving in regards to the economy and the trends in various countries. Brides are attracted to gown designs influenced by Korea, Taiwan and even Europe, and due to this, they are motivated to have their pre-wedding photography done in these countries as well. The biggest mistake. Brides tend to include all their best friends and family members in the gown selection process. Often, the more opinions you get, the more confused you will be, resulting in added stress and frustration. Words of wisdom. Consultants will always put in their best to assist the brides, but if you do not feel comfortable about something, speak up. Bridal consultants will often help pick out a few dresses, but it doesn’t mean that all brides will like them. Hence, they prefer to listen to your preference before showing you a selection of gowns.

Visit bridal boutique early. You should always start early. It takes about 9 to 12 months from the moment you place the order to get things flowing for a one stop

wedding photojournalism SHARING HIS LOVE AND EXPERTISE ON WEDDING PHOTography.

Website: www.lightedpixels.com Introduction. Kelvin from Lightedpixels Photography is no amateur to the wedding photography industry. With more than 12 years in this industry, Kelvin dedicates his time and effort to ensuring that couples get the most meaningful images from their weddings that they will be viewing for generations to come. Let’s hear from him on some of the essential aspects of wedding photography. Finding the right match. Look through their portfolio and see if you’re moved by their images. Ask yourself if you remember their work after a few days. The best way to know if the photographer is right for you is to personally visit him or her. There needs to be chemistry between you and the photographer. You need to feel inspired by the photographer. Share your love story. Tell them about yourselves and explain to them the little things that matter – how you

114 / FROMTHEPROS

met, where you met, what you both like about each other, proposal stories etc. Share as much as you can with the photographer. The more aware he is of your back story, the better he will be able to capture moments that matter to you. Style of photography. The important aspect is that the images must be meaningful and should bring a smile to the couple when they look at them for years to come. A lot of thought is put into achieving the kind of shots that the couple can relate to. Coming to my style, I would say it is towards the warmer tones. Warm tones are generally more romantic. I try to capture more real images with the focus being on the couple. Be prepared. Trust the photographer. Chances are that if you engaged a certain photographer, it means you trust their work. So, let them do their job and you focus on enjoying your big day. As cliched as it sounds, be yourself and simply have fun. Whatever it is you’re feeling on your wedding day will show on the images! Words of wisdom. Don’t worry about looking pretty in photographs. For pre-wedding shoots, focus on your partner and think about why you fell in love with this person. The images will speak for themselves. As for a marriage, communication is key. Know that as the years go by, you and your partner will change as you experience life. Remember to communicate and observe these changes so that you both grow together in your marriage.

The first thing you must remember brides, is that makeup is not to cover up but to accentuate your features on your wedding day. It is key to bring out the gleam in your eyes, the plumpness of your lips, the colour of your cheeks and the sweet radiance of your entire look. Also pay equal attention to your hairdo where limp and lifeless hair has no place in beauty. Overwhelmed? Fret-not, because we have Cherry Au from Autelier Makeup to share some tricks of the trade when it comes to hair and makeup on your wedding day. 1

Overlooked most of the time, but an eye primer makes a startling difference if you include that as your first step. It enables the rest of the eye products to hold together, leaving a lasting effect for the rest of the day.

Eye makeup products used: Urban Decay Eye Primer in Eden; Eyeshadow by Naked Palette 2; Gel Eyeliner by Bobbi Brown + Aqua Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner pencil by MAKEUP FOREVER; Eyelashes from Taiwan.

2 Most brides slather on their foundation base as their first step. Though that works out fine, consider putting on eye makeup first. They say that the eyes are the windows to your soul, therefore more work is put into that area where fallen specks of eye shadow or tiny smudges of eyeliner are bound to happen. So save the trouble with bare skin instead, this guarantees a “clean made-up face. FOUNDATION MAKEUP products used: Makeup forever Step 1 Skin Equaliser Primer; makeup forever Ultra HD Foundation; makeup forever Matte Loose Powder; makeup forever Sculpting Kit; MAKEUP FOREVER Cream HD Blush.

3 Facial features that are striking and attention-grabbing are usually preferred, but femininity exudes allure and elegance. Therefore, opt for a softer look that gives that captivating glow. For instance, use eyebrow powder to breathe life into your brows without looking too off-putting. To even out the look, a deep crimson shade of lipstick is perfect to project a polished and irresistible charm. LIPS AND BROWS PRODUCTS USED: Shu Uemura Eyebrow Pencil + Aqua Brows by MAKEUP FOREVER ; Lipstick is a combination color from Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte Lip Color In Port + MAKEUP FOREVER Rouge Artist Lip Palette.

With right amount of hairspray and a high-quality straightener, your hair is at your command for creating bouncy curls or sleek straight hair. A SLICE OF HEAVEN Words S Shaaleni

Layered cakes have always been a part of celebrating important milestones in one’s life. Baking a cake from scratch can be daunting, however assembling them to look pretty and delicate is a whole new ball game. We have Sam and Ernest from Cupplets to show us how to assemble a rustic naked cake. “The design of our cake stems from the inspiration behind this shoot. From vintage rustic props to the aptly suited venue inspired us to translate our cake into a timeless classic that will not only withstand trends but time as well. The motto ‘less is more’ is something that we want to portray in our view towards vintage rustic and we added colours to stand out from the background. The aim of the design is to show how elaborate a cake can look like from the scratch. Any design and theme is possible to achieve with the right tools and designing techniques.” shares Sam. The first thing to do, of course is to gather your mise en place. This seems like a no brainer but it is easy to forget to set up your working station efficiently because of all the excitement you feel in wanting to decorate a cake. Once you have your spatulas and cut fruits for decorating, you’re good to start! Stack your layers of cake with the ones with the larger circumference at the bottom. Spread a generous amount of buttercream in between the layers to keep them from moving and more importantly, it’s to see the tantalising layers of cake and buttercream when your fork is dug into this work of art. Ice your cake with buttercream. Since the look we are trying to achieve is a rustic one, cover only the bottom layers of the cake with buttercream sparingly. Use enough buttercream to cover the crumbs but not too much that it loses its rustic feel. Time to put your dainty little fingers at work! Let your creative self out and experiment with how you want to style your cake. Desserts are delicate creations to handle, so make sure you gently add the pieces of fruits and petals of flowers to decorate your cake. Voila! You have your very own layered rustic, naked cake! Let your creativity flow and style a pretty shot for keepsake. Here we have a set of gorgeous wedding invites done by Cupplets to complement the rustic cake! Look out for their new wedding stationery collection! Cupplets www.cupplets.com

marriage code for your finances

Keep your finances in check WORDS S SHAALENI

Even if you’ve been together in a stable relationship before marriage, getting hitched opens up a host of legal, tax and financial questions that couples overlook in the whirlwind of wedding planning. We have spoken with Jason Tan, a Financial Service Manager from Phillip Securities to give us some insights on financial planning for couples.

Dos: Update your will or CPF nomination. “You don’t have to leave everything to me, but please don’t leave nothing to me.” Passing on without a will not only causes inconvenience and delay in claiming your estate, but it’s also subjected to Intestate Succession Act. For more information and understanding, you can refer to section seven of the Act. Also, unknown to many, be aware that marriage makes any previous nomination invalid. Have a mortgage insurance for your new home. “Please don’t feed our children and me with bricks-and-motar.” A new love nest or home is what newly-weds will get when they tie the knot but to most of us, our property could be our greatest asset, and possibly our greatest liability as well. Having a mortgage insurance to take care of the outstanding loan will ensure that your family will still get to stay in the same place, even when you are not around. Review your insurance coverage (life, disability, illness and hospitalisation) “I have to take up a second job or a weekend job to pay for your medical bills and your treatment.” Previously, you may not need much or any coverage at all because you are single and possibly only your parents are your dependents. However, things definitely change now and it will be a heartache to be lying on the sick bed and seeing your spouse struggling

138 / DOS & DON’TS

to pay off your medical bills. Adequate coverage could replace income lost, eliminate debts and allow surviving spouse to maintain their lifestyle. Do it because you choose to be responsible and you want to eliminate the burden on your spouse. Work out a mutually acceptable way of managing expense. “If you can spend $8,000 on a watch, why can’t I spend $5,000 on a handbag?” Individual perception of value is different. What is cheap to you could be expensive to others. It would be a good idea if you agree to discuss any expense over a certain amount. This will definitely avoid any unnecessary argument. If you splurge on an expensive handbag just solely because your spouse bought a new watch, it could do more damage (financially and emotionally) than good. Have a common financial goal. “I want to go Europe while you want to go Japan for a vacation. Let’s go separately.” Having a common financial goal doesn’t just involve planning your holiday trip or what type of property to buy. Having a common goal, such as which university (local or overseas) should your soon-to-be born child attend or your retirement lifestyle and age, will enable you to have an objective to work towards and this also fosters your relationship further.

DoNT’ s: Assume your spouse will handle the finances. “I thought you would do it or manage it, not me.” We all have our strengths and weaknesses and one of you may be better in managing the finances than the other. It is important that both of you are aware of the decisions made and are equall y involved in the process. Most importantl y, learn to work as a team. Hide or cover anything. “Please don’t keep it a secret and in the end, give me a rude shock.” Be honest with your income, assets and debts. Most couple find this tough as they do not wish their spouse to know their little secret or they think they can pay off their debts themselves. Remember, two is better than one and it is important to pay off any “high interest debt” as soon as possible. Failing to do so is Financial Infidelity. Ignore the importance of Emergency Fund. “We’re fine, we don’t have to worry about money.” It is quite common for couples to be gainfull y employed and even to be drawing a high income. Gone are the days where an entire famil y can survive one a sole breadwinner. If one of you is jobless, either by choice or by force, it might cause a strain on the famil y’s financial situation. Couples should discuss the possibilities beforehand.

Manage your bank account or finances separatel y. “Your money is your money, my money is my money.” Yes, we understand that you sacrifice your weekend soccer matches or your usual hangouts with your friends to earn that income. However, by coming together, you’ll be able to better handle famil y expenses. Some couples practise contributing a percentage of their income to a joint account and pay off any famil y expenses from this joint account, while some handle it otherwise by splitting the responsibilites. Start off without a plan. “We overspent this month, let’s use our credit cards.” It may be painful or tedious to work this out but it could possibly save your marriage. To start, list down all expenses and categorise them as household expense; personal expense; insurance premiums; savings; and also discretionary expense. By doing so, it will ensure that you do not over-spend and live within your means. Giving each other a little space in their own finances can go a long way.

Celebrate life’s moments

There’s nothing sweeter than finding someone to share the rest of your life with. The best sort of love stories are not the ones found in books, but the kind where you can write your own Happily Ever After. And the best photographs are often so much more than just captured fleeting moments frozen in time on a page. With a glance, they have the power to evoke memories and sensations beyond more than what the mere eye can see – the warmth of entwined fingers and a sturdy shoulder, the gentle caress of a breeze carrying just the slightest tang of salty ocean air, the soft rustle of organza flowing and settling on a wooden bench, and the sweet, sweet sound of shared laughter hanging in the air. We believe that with just a touch of heart and with a wealth of sincerity, the simplest tales of love can be just as meaningful as any of the greatest romances of legends and lore. We are here because you are in love.

live, laugh, love

And it was laughter that attracted Yun Qing to Desmond like a fluttering moth to a flickering flame. Apart from his kindness and graciousness, Desmond’s innate ability to bring out the joy in Yun Qing secured her hand in marriage.

Union of DESMOND & YUN QING

It was not love at first sight when both of them met in an exchange programme in Sweden. Yun Qing sheepishly admitted that even though Desmond was a very nice person, he was too boring for her liking. But like every planted mustard seed of love, it takes time to grow. As they spent more time together, Yun Qing soon saw the other side of Desmond and all her old impressions of him went out the door. Instead, she became smitten by his charm and both of them soon fell madly in love.

Desmond proved to be a romantic scribe in secrecy, penning down his thoughts and feelings for Yun Qing over the years of dating in a diary. It was never his intention to share this with anyone, making this just between him and himself. But what is a better way to propose to the love of his life than through written declarations of love? It was at Sentosa Boardwalk where the sun had paled into a tangerine orange for a sunset. He assembled their closest friends in chronological order of his diary entries. Each of them held a written entry from his diary which was handed to Yun Qiang as she walked down the line till the end where Desmond will be waiting with the last written note – a question in four words. Desmond and Yun Qing’s love for the great outdoors inspired their wedding to be in the theme of a countryside; thus, Villa Halia was selected.

It was a perfect choice of venue as being located in the heart of Singapore Botanic Gardens, guests could bask in the natural splendour of the outdoors and still enjoy the comforts of the restaurant. An intimate, relaxed and cosy affair was what Desmond and Yun Qing desired for that day. Also being lovers for all things rustic, the couple was not only resourceful with their decorations, but also very hands-on with the preparations. They truly stuck to the countryside theme as most of their decorations had a recurring woodsy and greenery feel. A wooden panel acted as a canvas for photos of their moments together while fairy lights illuminated the whole setting, transforming the venue to an enchanted forest. Instead of the predictable notions of a flashy wedding, Desmond and Yun Qing wanted one that bore distinctive marks of their personality and set an ambitious timeline for the wedding preparations which they tried their best to follow. Even at times when they wanted to admit defeat, the couple pulled through and their efforts paid off with an unforgettable wedding. “Keep things in a way that represents you as a couple,” advises the bride. “You’ll enjoy the journey, no matter how stressful it can get.”

chandeliers that hang off enviable high ceilings, to lawns of lush greenery and marble waterfalls, CHIJMES is nothing short of grandiose and glamour. Yet, the chapel still exudes humility as it stands stoically for the past 100 years. Maybe it likens to be an oasis in the midst of a chaotic city that makes CHIJMES a perfect location for many couples to swear their love for one another, and for Ian and Sylvia is no different. Love can be found at every nook and cranny of the world. The way each connection entwines differs for every lovebird that flutters unknowingly in the air. Like an explosion of passion with just a strike of matchstick, love might come fast and hit you out of the blue. Or perhaps time is needed to manifest and grow like a simmering pot of desire that gradually reaches a boiling point. But no matter the journey, there is always a blissful end. For Ian and Syliva it was the latter, where they met at a hostel and love bubbled and brewed till it hit the brim and overflowed a never-ending stream of emotions and feelings they kept from each other. Their wedding venue was lavished in the bride’s favourite colour – purple which symbolises nobility, royalty and luxury. Pristine whiteness of the architecture was illuminated with soft glows of this powerful hue. A wedding is not without personal touches. Ian and Sylvia had a welcome table displaying a variety of framed quotes and Bible verses on love, and their guests could choose from an assortment of quirky cards to sign their wishes on. The couple also put together a larger than life photo album of their moments they spent together which guests can flip through in delight.

The element of surprise was vital to Ian’s proposal to Sylvia, and it was through meticulous planning and careful preparations did he succeed. Ian admits he was very nervous at that time because Sylvia is a very sharp woman. Thankfully, she suspected nothing as he pulled the brakes of his car to the place of their first date. Ian then played a video montage with their favourite song in the background. As the video came to a close, he joined in on the last line of the song with his guitar and sang his way into Sylvia’s heart. To be proposed in a melodic expression, how can a girl say no! With every relationship, there will definitely be differences, but they are not deficiencies. Find ways to tweak and make things more refined, or as Ian and Sylvia put it “at the end of the day, remember to always love and respect one another”. They shared that both of them had conflicting visions of their wedding. Sylvia wanted a small scale one with family and close friends, while Ian leaned towards a bigger one. However, this did not get the better of them and they compromised for a wedding which they both love and hold in memory forever.

a storybook romance Union of Ryan & Michelle

WORDS Elliot LIM Solemnisation at Church of St Mary of the Angels Wedding Reception at W Hotel Theme White Elegance and Crystals

“Every love story is beautiful, but ours is my favourite.” The crystals of wedding decorations glittered and gleamed under the lights in the ballroom of W hotel. But it was Ryan and Michelle who bedazzled everyone as

doors parted for their grand entrance as husband and wife for the very first time. Like a scene right out of a fairy tale, the grandeur of a royal banquet in a ma jestic ballroom with feasting and dancing was recreated for that night. It was themed to white elegance and crystals to suit the fairy-tale vision. Christmas came slightly early for Michelle. It was on the eve of that festive holiday, when her family was at her place to celebrate the occasion. Michelle recalled how perturbed she was at Ryan’s strange behaviour. He kept himself locked up in his room, with music blasting at the highest volume. Just when Michelle could give Ryan a piece of her mind, there he kneeled, in front of her whole family to ask her for her hand after being together for seven years. The wedding was truly a joyous and memorable event for all. And this incredible feat was accomplished by none other than the groom and bride themselves. Ryan and Michelle took the reins of the whole planning process of their wedding. Straying from a cookie-cutter wedding, they leaned towards creating a unique affair where they customised everything from their invites to Michelle’s bridal gown. It took almost a year to plan and get everything on track. Sometimes when there is a specific idea, it is best done by yourself. And that was what Ryan and Michelle did to achieve their fairy tale theme of white elegance and crystals. The Ang Pow box, a well to hold wishes and wedding decorations of bird cages and lanterns were all hand-crafted by them.

They moulded clay into hearts as wedding favours, baked their own wedding cake and even took it upon themselves to hand-glue Swarovski crystals to their wedding invites for that extra sparkle. With every great feasting, comes exuberant dancing. A huge space was specially allocated for the dance floor as Ryan and Michelle wanted to give their guests a party to remember. Guests from a great mix of cultures and countries, young and old alike, twisted and shook the night away. It was also where Ryan and Michelle had their first dance as man and wife, which Michelle declared as one of the most romantic moment of their wedding day. One ma jor disappointment was when many of their overseas guests could not attend the wedding as their visas were not approved at the last minute. It was definitely a blow to them, but bearing in mind a quote - “a wedding is a day and a marriage is a lifetime”, it reminded them nothing is perfect, whatever happens will happen and they should ride along with it. And so with that vision of a fairy tale, Ryan and Michelle indeed had a happy ending to the magical wedding of their lives.

If you had no budget constraints, what would you do differently? His & HER : Whatever we wanted for our fairy-tale wedding we had.

childhood sweethearts Union of VICTOR & MEI TING

WORDS Elliot Lim Wedding Reception at Mandarin Oriental Singapore Theme OCEAN BLUE

“And

still going strong.”

It may be considered a rarity in its own form to be with a romantic partner since your secondary school days. A rarity that likens to a jewel hidden in the sand, which depicts the love story of Victor and Mei Ting. Being secondary school sweethearts is one thing, but

188 / REAL WEDDINGS

to stay together for 14 marvellous years before tying the knot really hits the spot. Mei Ting said it was similar interests and compatible characters that contributed to this perfect copulation. She even went on further and declared that they were soulmates. There is not a time where they were bored of one another, and their relationship was described as an endless stream of excitement every single day. With that being said, their love is not to be taken for granted. Especially when it comes to Mei Ting, who rejected Victor’s proposal the first time. She is indeed a force to be reckon with, only agreeing when Ryan proposed again, this time round with hand-crafted flowers as he knew her dislike for the withering of flowers. Staying true to their Chinese background, a formal introduction of themselves as new members to the families was done in the form of a Tea Ceremony. A tradition that holds much significance to Victor and Mei Ting, as this act meant that the newlyweds are now accepted formally into both families. Mei Ting’s choice of wardrobe was rather different from just sticking to a white bridal gown. Stemming from her in-laws’ love for Peranakan clothing, Mei Ting opted to wear a traditional Kebaya which she borrowed from them for one of her outfit changes. In a Kebaya of bright colours and intricate detailing, Mei Ting sashayed from one point to the other, and performed her bridal duties with radiant glee.

Three months was all it took for Victor and Mei Ting’s wedding of ocean blue to take form. “Like lying on a beach facing the sea, the colour blue gives me a feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation. I would like to bring some of that fuzziness to my wedding day,” the bride gushes. Victor and Mei Ting especially relished what they call the “Love Corner” which was the only aspect that was DIY-ed. The “Love Corner”, as the name goes, was a corner that was filled with love tokens of their union. A large photo album of pre-wedding photos were in full display, and even more photos were carefully perched on the grills of an elegant white bird cage in the midst of fallen rose petals and scattered tea lights. Though it was only one, that personal touch of romance went a long way. Trust and space. These are two attributes that the couple feels are required to have a lasting relationship. “Trust is the basic foundation in any relationship, and at the same time, refrain from smothering each other and learn to give each other space at times”, they advise.

“My heart is and always will be yours.” The cliché of Bali being a tropical island of paradise might sometimes be taken too far. However, Bali is what it is where a mere mention of its name evokes a

longing of wanderlust. From mountainous rock terrains and magnificent waterfalls, to their stretches of rice paddy fields, the island possess the ingredients for the perfect wedding destination for the union of Wilfred and Angelina. Even with its intimate setting and surreal sights, Bali holds meaning to the both of them as it was the place where the proposal happened. The couple visited the country for vacation to mark four years of being together. Little did Angelina know that it will be more than just that. When they were about to head off to a romantic dinner on the exact anniversary date, Wilfred popped the question with one hand holding a scrapbook he made of their memories together and the other holding the engagement ring. However, home is where the heart is. Wilfred and Angelina still held their nuptials in sunny Singapore the second time at the luxurious Conrad Centennial Singapore. It was a joyous occasion for all without comprising on luxury. Champagne bottles were popped for traditional toasts while professional tinkle of piano keys was heard live from a baby grand piano throughout the banquet, providing melodious entertainment for the guests. The couple did without the table-to-table photoshoots, instead photo sessions were done with a sofa settee placed outside the ballroom, which was inspired by the Korean style of a photoshoot. “Enjoy the whole process” – that was the advice given by married couples which Wilfred and Angelina took heed.

Planning a wedding is like a whirlwind of logistics and emotions wrapped up in one. Therefore, it is important to be well-organised with a keen sense of time. Like knife through soft butter, the wedding preparations for Wilfred and Angelina was smooth sailing as they had a clear direction of what they wanted. The duo was also dynamic in working as a team, tasking upon themselves in areas that complement the end results. For instance, for their pre-wedding photoshoot, Wilfred researched inspiration ideas of a Korean wedding while Angelina sourced for studios which suit their vision. And it does help when there is a whole troupe of loved ones ready to lighten the load as time leads up to the big wedding day. Following their motto of loving each other always, an abundance of selfless love is seen between these two lovebirds from the planning process to the actual day itself. The couple wants to remind people that the essence of a marriage is true love. And it is love so pure that will lead to a married life of bliss and happiness.

WORDS Elliot LIM

Amidst the patriotic festivity, tucked away in the comfort of their own home were Yongliang and Shi Min enjoying the parade through the screen of the television. Just as it was time for the fireworks to erupt and whiz to a dazzling brilliance, Yongliang surprised Shi Min with a chocolate cake that had frosted words saying “Two Hearts One Will”. In the center was a lit candle, and through it was a ring. And at the very first explosion of a firework, a proposal was made and a new adventure began.

Love – the chosen wedding theme that does not beat around the bush but puts an end to the cycle of courtship into a lifetime of commitment. They wanted an ambience of cosiness and intimacy for their wedding day, and hence the love theme is spot on in encompassing all the gooey and warm positive feelings into one room. Customisations held key to make the wedding extra special for themselves and their guests. Yongliang and Shi Min curated and pieced together a video montage of their growing up days with a heart-warming twist. Recordings of both their mothers’ voices played simultaneously as the video ran. And as each photo of Yongliang and Shi Min were flashed, be it when they were two or twenty-two, their mothers would describe and recall a memory behind each picture taken which gave a glimpse of the couple’s life to their guests.

Yongliang and Shi Min also made an audio recording of themselves, describing their journey of ups and downs as a couple. Life experiences were shared and relationship advice was offered. Their wedding was also not short of a variety of musical performances by relatives and friends, where there were not only singing, but also a solo saxophone performance! “It is a wedding filled with customisations!” the bride beams. Patience was a virtue as the days led up to the wedding. The couple reached out for advice from married couples and learnt a tip or two from their weddings. It took two years for preparations as creating a personalised wedding required a lot of specifications. “Prepare as early as possible and don’t be afraid to ask around for help,” advise the couple. “The aid might be valuable to your wedding preparations.”

Shaaleni: The stunning vibrant hues of gold and fiery orange is one of intense passion and vigour. This image with its deep colours very aptly depicts a newlywed’s love and desire for each other. There is perfect proportion in this shot and the way the tree branches form a ‘L’ shaped border around the image is quite befitting.

50 Media: A gorgeous sunset, beautiful clouds and great lighting are all that were needed for this shot to take place. KENT WONG PHOTOGRAPHY HALLSTATT LAKE

Shaaleni: This image evokes a sense of appreciation for the vastness that nature offers. The gentle hues of the lake, mountain and the sky blend perfectly into a pictuesque backdrop for this couple. With the sun emerging from behind the mountains, the warm rays cast a trail of light reflecting on the surface of the lake water. These wondrous moments that nature provides humble us as humans to appreciate life with a greater perspective.

Kent: A beautiful morning where the sun just rose above the mountain and created visible sun-rays shining on the Hallstatt Lake. I can’t possibly not take full advantage of this natural beauty. From behind my lens, it’s a whole new perspective and this was just too stunning to not capture. I used an off-camera flash with yellow gel to balance the exposure between the couple and the backlight in the background and to create the illusion of the sun lighting the couple. This is how I achieved this shot. Kent www.kentwongphoto.com

LIGHTEDPIXELS PIXIES BRIGHT GREEN CANOPY

Shaaleni: These cascading branches with bright green leaves create a canopy for the couple making it intimate and surreal – two sentiments that are inextricably intertwined when it comes to love. The light shining on the leaves add to the intimacy of this image. Having the couple in the dark surrounded by a warm backlight is the needed element to achieve the romantic aspect of this image.

Lee: This image is captured with the backlight of the sun shining through the leaves. It draws out the shadow of the couple standing. This is precious because the way the groom and bride-to-be stare into each other’s eyes is simply romantic. The quiet feel of this image is what I like most.

MULTIFOLDS PHOTOGRAPHY LAVENDER FIELDS

Shaaleni: From the beloved fragrance to the glorious purple colour of the flowering plant, lavender fields have a certain alluring charm that is quite irresistable. Capturing lavender fields in its natural beauty is already surreal and breakthtaking enough but this image here takes the beauty of nature to a whole new level. Having elements of the starry sky incorporated into this shoot gave this image a new meaning.

Melvin: This particular photo was out from the camera and directly into my iPhone. My client casually asked what if we capture the lavender field under the stars? I haven’t tried it before as for all my starry night shots, the ground is usually dark because in an ideal condition, the whole area must be pitch black. My client pushed my barrier in my spatial side of my brain to think, what if I spill light over on the fields? A dash of light on the right and a dose of iPhone light spread evenly across the field as if light was water mist gently touching on it was what I had to do to achieve this shot without photoshop. However, I did increase the saturation like throwing a pinch of salt into the food to make it tastier. “ Melvin www.multifolds.com.sg

this industry, we know how to make every bride feel like royalty in our gowns. Inspiration. We distinct ourselves from the rest with a flair that is upwardly modern, stylish and fashion forward that allow you to stand out from the rest of the brides. Our inspiration stems from the wedding couples and their love story. We try to incorporate elements of their story into their pre-wedding shoots with us. Heart-racing factor. The best part about running a bridal boutique is the customer satisfaction. The feeling we get when we see couples dressed in their perfect outfits gleaming at each other is unattainable anywhere else. When couples give us a good review, we feel motivated to bring our best to the wedding industry. Challenges. The challenge lies in making couples see the value in one-stop bridal service. Today, couples tend to adopt the a la carte service approach for their weddings – picking a gown from a bridal boutique and hiring independent photographers etc. This is of course, perfectly acceptable but we feel there is a need to educate couples on the benefits of a one-stop service bridal boutique.

Creative vision. Our gowns are designed with the aim to make brides look stunning and have all eyes on her on the wedding day. We custom-make designs for brides based on their preferences and also, their personalities. We take the time to get to know the couple and their love story before picking out a selection of gowns or suits for them to try on. Words of wisdom. Ensure you know what packages you’re getting. Always read the fine print. Make sure that the amount you pay includes all the services that you need for your wedding. The two important factors you need to take note of are the gowns and the photos. Make sure there are no hidden costs. Talk to the consultants and share your thoughts with them before signing a package with any bridal boutique. Future plans. For Bliss Bridal Creations, we are looking to attend more wedding shows to get our brand name out to more couples and to educate wedding couples on our services. As one-stop service bridal boutique, we make it convenient for couples to plan their wedding with ease.

Background. A year before starting my company, I went for my honeymoon in Tokyo and started snapping away at the scenic landscape. I did my own research and developed a set of skills for photography. In 2011, I met a senior photographer and started dabbling in wedding photography. I almost immediately fell in love with the essence of wedding photography.

Inspiration The emotions. Even after covering so many weddings, seeing the raw emotions of people surfacing is something that keeps me going. These moments are too precious to the people involved in a wedding as it is an one time affair. The love story of the couple also plays a part. Everyone’s story is unique and there’s a certain kind of beauty in being part of someone’s love story. Heart-racing factor. The best feeling is when you capture a split second moment. Anything can trigger this moment; you can be casually conversing and suddenly, you spot a genuine smile from the bride. Being able to capture these moments is just priceless for me. Favourite shot. I absolutely love this shot. This shot was taken at the famous love-locks bridge in Paris, right after the rain stopped before the sunset, which allowed me to capture the rare dramatic and beautiful sky. Challenges. The challenges arise when couples don’t trust the photographer. Prior to the wedding, it is very important to meet the photographer and build a trusting bond with them. Share with them stories and anecdotes of your love life. With their experience in the wedding photography field, they will be able to come up with ideas to showcase your personalities accurately.

Creative vision. Usually, it takes a few years to develop a style of photography. My aim for pre-weddings is to ensure that couples look beautiful with gorgeous backdrops. I think about how to make them look good and blend them well with the surrounding. For wedding day photography, my style is more journalistic and story based to capture as many precious moments as possible. Words of wisdom. Just be yourself and don’t worry about the photography. Trust the photographer and let him do his job. It is your wedding – a once in a lifetime event, so relax and enjoy the day. Future plans. I’m looking to expand my team; to maybe find a photographer with a similar style and passion for the wedding industry.

hello kwang

Passionate | Inspiring | Emotional

Website: www.lightboxweddings.com Email: kwang@lightboxweddings.com Kwang from Lightbox Weddings is a passionate wedding photographer basking in the joy of being able to capture the essence of one of the most momentous occasions in life. Every photographer has a signature style and Kwang is no exception to this. His style of photography is to adapt and suit every couple according to their wedding theme. He effortlessly works with the couple’s personalities and the images truly show the love story of the couple. Background. I fell in love with photography when I took it up as a hobby in 2005. Not till 2007, did I fully immerse myself in wedding photography. Capturing the little and precious moments, I find wedding photography to be the most rewarding and satisfying. Having done corporate shoots and events, my love for wedding photography still stays strong.

230 / HELLO VENDOR

Inspiration The ability to spot the precious moments in itself is an inspiration. For wedding day photography, we capture shots that show the close bonding between the bride and family. Being entrusted with documenting a couple’s most important day is a very big responsibility and it boils down to experience and how we interact with couples. The love story of the couple is a definite must-know for us as we can better create the opportunities to snap the shots that portray their story. Heart-racing factor. You can almost never find two identical shots. Even if it is a still object, what each photographer sees is different. The exciting thing about photography is that you get to understand the perception of the photographer. You can see the world through his eyes. It’s also fascinating to see how an image cannot be recreated in the same exact way again. Conditions are always changing. Favourite shot. This was done few years back during my couple Jiwen and Huishan’s wedding day with their entourage. The group was so fun and spontaneous which formed and created the mood and feel of the image, showing us the friendship, bonding and love of the whole group. Challenges. Educating couples on wedding photography is essential. Some still continue to think that you can have a friend to photograph the entire wedding. Educating couples on the benefits of hiring a professional photographer and explaining why certain photographers charge a certain amount are some of the challenges to overcome I would say.

FAVE SHOT

Creative vision. My approach is to build a good relationship with the couples in order for them to get comfortable. When couples feel natural, the images will show the true emotions and there is nothing quite as beautiful as that. The final images are not the only things that matter, it is the experience that is of utmost importance. Words of wisdom. Set the wedding date early and find your photographer to secure them on the selected dates. When setting a budget, ensure you allocate a sizable amount for photography. Images are all that are left after your big day. Treasure them. Use the photographs, frame them and hang them around your house to remind you of your special moments as a wedding couple. Future plans. Lightbox Weddings always believes in celebrating life’s moments. So, we are looking to venture into special moments other than solely on weddings – motherhood, parents, family, children etc. Basically, we want to be part of different precious moments in people’s lives.

Home to some of the most picturesque views in Asia, the city and sea will bear witness to your special moment when you say ‘I Do’ at Marine Bay Sands. On 5th September 2015, there was a wedding showcase held at Marina Bay Sands to showcase three different wedding themes that couples can choose from. With a turnout of more than 200 couples, this rather small scale event was a big hit! There were four exhibitors involved in the event – La Belle Couture, One Eye Click, Coffee & Tea, Dreamzcoffee and 72 Live Bands. 232 / OU T O N TO W N

Known for their high standards in gowns, La Belle Couture has over 700 designer couture gowns and 200 suits to choose from. At One Eye Click, they share a common passion to document life where their core business is wedding and bridal photography. Well established for 10 years, Coffee & Tea Dreamzcoffee provides wedding services such as prewedding and wedding day photography, videography, cartoon animation and live photo service. 72 Live Bands is band management company that takes pride in providing reliable and affordable musicians or bands for weddings. They offer a pool of talents ranging from musicians to emcees to DJs and even to special acts aimed to entertain and delight your guests. The main objective of this event was to ensure that couples had all that they need for weddings under one roof ranging from banquet services, gowns, photography and florists. Couples also had the opportunity to relish in the epicurean delights that Asia’s top wedding destination has to offer. Breaking the barrier between wedding couples and vendors, Weddings on the Bay evoked authentic engagements between the two parties to have a more meaningful event for vendors and couples alike. beyond expectations THE WEDDING ESSENTIALs

Truly Harmony, and The Fullerton Hotel Singapore participated in the showcase where exclusive deals were offered and conversations about their goods and services were exchanged.

WORDS Elliot LIM

That is the whole concept of The Wedding Essentials Showcase – to bring professional and reliable vendors and couples together in an intimate setting where everything could be done up close and personal.

Venue FULLERTON HOTEL Photography LiveStudios Photography Pte Ltd A first of its kind to take place at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, The Wedding Essentials Showcase ended its eighth event on 5th September 2015, this time round with a huge landslide of success for all vendors and couples alike. It is truly a milestone for this wedding event, which started off in the confines of Truly Harmony’s office. “This showcase far exceeded all expectations!” gushed Esta from Décor Artisans, a décor rental company, where more than 80 couple sign-ups were received prior to the show alone. Truly Harmony, a wedding planning company, is the founder of this wedding showcase which takes place bi-annually. Held at The Ballroom of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, 11 vendors – Amanda Lee Weddings, Chocolate Graphics, Décor Artisans, LiveStudios Interactive Photography, Mirage Flowers, MovingStills Photography, Multifolds Photography, SALTS Cake Couture, SG Wedding DJ,

For instance, MovingStills Photography set up an automated photo-kiosk, completed with a faux greenery background provided by Décor Artisans for couples to take pictures against and receive the actual photo prints in seconds. Couples were also in for a treat from SALTS Cake Couture, where they not only had a chance to sample its delectable baked wares, but also witness the intricate wedding cake creations that were put on display. There was definitely some glamour to holding the showcase at The Fullerton Hotel Singpore, where couples had private tours of The Ballroom and The Straits Room to be potential wedding venues. “Ultimately, The Wedding Essentials Showcase is to show the works of growing businesses and help them expand,” Esta continued. “With authentic engagements between both parties, vendors will continue to grow in their businesses while couples enjoy great savings and a more meaningful planning of their wedding day.” THE WEDDING ESSENTIALS www.theweddingessentials.com.sg

At the same time, check if your banquet venues allow bringing in your own wine as some require a corkage fee, which might be waived through negotiation. Lastly, find a wine supplier which provides consignment services to avoid the issue of overordering or the embarrassment of insufficient wine. v
