The internship hunt: What students should know about landing a great position (ARA) – This is the time of year when companies converge on college campuses looking for the best and brightest students. Recruiters - from financial services firms to high tech companies - battle it out to lure potential interns to their branding and recruiting events in hopes of enticing them to intern at their company. For students, it's the ultimate opportunity to get a foot in the door at a company where they'd like to have a career.

“It's the ultimate opportunity to get a foot in the door at a company where they'd like to have a career.”
Thomas says there are many things to love about finding an internship this fall, but here are her top reasons.
The ability to expand personal networks and make new friends is one of the best perks of finding the perfect internship. At each event a student attends, there
Learning new skills that may lead to leadership opportunities and also transfer back into the classroom are key reasons why finding the internship is both useful and fun. Finding a paid internship is essential. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the average intern wage for a senior in a four-year undergraduate program is $17.57 per hour. Compare that to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, and students who land internships will be light years ahead of peers working in service or a job not connected to their field of study.
“This is a great time to be a student in the market. It's not only exciting to see the all opportunities that are available, but students can learn a lot from the process of finding an internship,” says Ebony Thomas, director of campus recruiting at Prudential Financial.
It’s all about dressing for success. If students don't have the appropriate clothes for recruiting events, it's time to shop for a look that sends the right message to recruiters and hiring managers. Most college students have clothes for the classroom that pull doubleduty for social outings (aka rush party, clubs, etc). “Those looks will get you noticed in the wrong way at recruiting events,” Thomas adds. Though funds can be limited, she suggests finding two to three interchangeable pieces for interaction with corporate recruiters.
internship, it's the perfect opportunity to learn to sell yourself. Learn to be an advocate for your skills, knowledge and potential.
“Networking with them will give you tips on how to be successful in social, teaming and interviewing segments of the process,” she notes. Many companies are getting more innovative in their approach to draw you to their events to get to know potential interns. “We see companies offering new experiences to broaden your horizon and creating challenges that are meant to be memorable for the intern
you'll work in teams and under pressure.” Interviewing is an essential part of landing the internship, and by far, the most challenging. Knowing what to say and how to say it is invaluable. Meeting with different company representatives and recruiters can help you polish interpersonal skills that are key to successful interviews. For those committed

Landing the job is the one of the top reasons to love finding the internship. The NACE 2012 Job Outlook survey found that nearly 75 percent of employers prefer to hire candidates with relevant work experience – and that work experience is gained through interning in your field of study or interest. As an additional point, Thomas recommends that college students who are in the market for an internship shouldn't overlook the obvious: Start early and get to know the school's career services counselors, who can offer students a great deal of support. “Career counselors can be the ultimate match maker to introduce you to many internship options and help you find companies that could be a good match.”

How Important is it that we Love our Jobs? Work/life balance expert Jim Bird (www.worklifebalance.com) says we hear all the time how important it is to have jobs we love. Yet most people he knows don’t love their work. They either accept it or tolerate it. And that’s okay, Bird says. He points out that while it’s not necessary to be passionate about your job, you should be passionate about how well you do the job. Why? Because that’s what you do for yourself. Lacking passion for your job doesn’t necessarily mean you’re living your life less well than the individual who is passionate about work. Your passion may surface in regard to other areas of your life. Bird offers these suggestions for generating more ardor for living: • Write the essay or book that’s been in the back of your mind. • Take a class in a subject that engrosses you. • Teach a class in the subject that engrosses you. • Cook dinners that will make your friends swoon. • Go to your favorite sporting events. • Let the people you’re closest to know how much you adore them.
Quotes “Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.”
The key is to set aside time for doing whatever it is you love to do. The first step is deciding you’re going to do it. The important second step, Bird says, is to go for it.

Governor and Commissioner highlight initiative to make Occupational Licensing more efficient for Veterans AUGUSTA – Governor Paul R. LePage and Commissioner Anne Head highlighted an initiative at the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation (DPFR) to make occupational licensing in several professions quicker and easier for veterans with relevant military training and experience. Governor LePage has made it a priority to help Maine’s veterans —encouraging state agencies to provide assistance to those who served our nation in the military. One such effort by the Governor and DPFR has been the implementation of Public Law Chapter 603, signed by the Governor earlier this year.
The new law is intended to ensure that veterans are given full credit for applicable military training and experience when they apply for an occupational license from the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation at DPFR. “The people of Maine owe a debt of gratitude to those who have served,” Governor LePage commented. “We have an obligation to recognize their knowledge and skills whenever possible and appropriate, and our economy needs their contributions. I’m pleased to have worked with the Department and Legislature to make licensing quicker and easier for our veterans.”
More information can be obtained by calling DFPR at 207-624-8678. Veterans are encouraged to contact DFPR before applying. Military documentation that may be needed includes: -- Copy of a DD Form 214, Report of Discharge; and -- Copy of DD Form 2586, Verification of Military Experience and Training (VMET) “The Department is committed to working with Maine veterans to make sure their skills and talents are fully evaluated and appreciated,” Commissioner Head noted. “Whenever we can give veterans credit toward licensing
requirements, based on their military experience, we intend to do so. It’s in the best interest of veterans, our business community, and consumers seeking the services of electricians, plumbers and other professionals.” Commissioner Head noted that the Department will continue to explore ways to streamline programs and assist veterans—while also continuing to safeguard public health and safety. She encouraged anyone with ideas for additional improvements to licensing laws and procedures to contact the Department by calling 207-6248678.

Making the successful transition from college to career (ARA) – Many recent college graduates continue to face a challenging job market, but do they know how to effectively locate and acquire a job? With 53.6 percent of bachelor's degree-holders under the age of 25 underemployed or unemployed, the nation's young people are unfortunately less prepared than they think. According to a new national survey, 48 percent of college career center directors felt students were not well prepared for the career landscape - noting a lack of motivation and understanding about the job search process as major barriers to successfully landing a job. The survey, Effectively Counseling Graduating Students, was conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) on behalf of the Career Advisory Board, established by DeVry University. Career center directors cited that, overall, students have a poor understanding of the effort required to search for and secure employment. More than 77 percent of college career center directors felt the greatest obstacle in counseling students to enter the job market was getting them to understand the effort required to successfully search and compete for a job. These factors contribute to students not utilizing their school's career center or skipping this resource altogether, which could prolong the job search process. Fifty-six percent of career center directors felt students did not have resumes ready to show employers. “The

graduates may be prepared to perform on the job, but not prepared to find the job,” says Alexandra Levit, business and workplace consultant and Career Advisory Board member. “Students need to seek out the career center early in their college experience to take advantage of resume review, coaching and career counseling to prepare for the job hunt.” Eighty percent of the career center directors surveyed believe individual student career coaching is the most effective resource available for students.

AUGUSTA, Maine – State Labor Commissioner Jeanne Paquette released August workforce estimates for Maine on Sept. 21.
in August, down 1,900 from the revised July estimate. U.S. nonfarm payroll jobs were up 96,000 in August.
Survey of Households
Monthly nonfarm payroll jobs estimates continue to be more volatile than the lagging, complete count of wage and salary jobs collected through unemployment insurance tax filings of employers. Data through June 2011 has been benchmarked to the complete count; estimates after June 2011 are likely to be much smoother once they are revised in March 2013.
The preliminary estimate of the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Maine was 7.6 percent in August, unchanged from July and little changed from 7.5 percent one year ago. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated 54,000 were unemployed, up 1,100 over the year. The U.S. unemployment rate estimate was 8.1 percent, down from 8.3 percent in July and 9.1 percent one year ago. Over the year, the share of the population that was employed was little changed both in Maine and the nation (60.1 percent of Maine residents were employed, remaining above the U.S. average of 58.3 percent). The decline in the U.S. unemployment rate during that period was due to lower labor force participation, as the number of jobless people not searching for work increased 2.7 million (those not actively looking for work are not counted as unemployed). Maine did not have a similar sharp drop in labor force participation to cause a corresponding drop in the unemployment rate. The unemployment rate for New England was 7.3 percent; rates in other states were 5.7 percent in New Hampshire, 5.3 percent in Vermont, 6.3 percent in Massachusetts, 10.7 percent in Rhode Island and 9.0 percent in Connecticut. Survey of Employer Payrolls U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics preliminary estimates indicate there were 591,300 nonfarm payroll jobs
Not Seasonally Adjusted Substate Data The not seasonally adjusted statewide unemployment rate was 6.7 percent in August, unchanged from one year ago. Not seasonally adjusted rates ranged from 5.4 percent in Lincoln & Knox Counties to 9.6 percent in Washington County. Rates tended to be lower than the statewide average in southern and coastal counties and higher than average in northern and rim counties. Among metro areas, the unemployment rate was below the statewide average in Portland-South Portland-Biddeford (5.5 percent) and higher than the statewide average in Bangor (7.0 percent) and Lewiston-Auburn (7.2 percent). Detailed labor force and unemployment data for the state, counties, and 31 labor market areas; nonfarm jobs data for the state and the three metropolitan areas; and much more data is available at www.maine.gov/labor/cwri. September data is scheduled for release October 19.
