Job Fairs effective at putting people to work AUGUSTA — As autumn approaches, Maine's Career Centers and other organizations will be sponsoring a host of job fairs across the state. Many may wonder whether businesses are really hiring in this economy. In a nutshell, yes, they are, as follow-up from one such job fair held last spring indicates. Last spring, York County held a Regional Job Fair in Springvale, with 65 organizations participating and more than 550 people attending. Feedback indicates that 50 job seekers were hired by such businesses as Adecco, Cianbro, FedEx Ground, Bonney Staffing, Fiber Materials, Home Helpers, Hussey Seating, Lakeview NeuroRehabilitation, New England Truck Tire, Project Flagging, Springborn Staffing, Waban and the York County Jail.
Career Fair resulted in 29 hires by 14 employers, including the Jackson Laboratory, Hollywood Casino, VIP and Woodlands Assisted Living. “Job fairs really showcase the many types of companies and many types of jobs a region offers,” noted
In addition, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard promoted their apprenticeship program, and representatives believe that many of the 1,900 applicants tested for the program began the application process at this job fair.
Commissioner of Labor Jeanne Paquette. “Job fairs are great places for people in different situations – whether it be someone who is unemployed, a younger person needing career ideas or someone who really wants to change careers – to be able to talk to different businesses and be inspired. Getting people back to work is a focus of the LePage Administration."

AUGUSTA – City and town officials from across Maine want to be better known for being business-friendly. The LePage Administration announced that five municipalities are under consideration in round three of the Certified BusinessFriendly Community Program. Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) Commissioner George Gervais released the list Thursday which includes the communities of Ellsworth, Fairfield, Lubec, Kennebunk and Topsham.
Through the program, the LePage Administration has so far certified fourteen cities and towns as probusiness which according to officials, has had a positive impact. “I found that working my way through the application was a really great experience of reflecting on what we have done and where we should be spending those precious few available hours in the day in order to make our processes more accountable,” said Bucksport Director of Economic Development, Dave Milan.
“The goal of the program is to encourage a business-friendly climate in every municipality throughout the State and better position Maine for economic prosperity,” said Governor LePage.
A team made up of both public and private economic development experts reviews each application to determine eligibility into the Certified Business-Friendly Community Program. Multiple areas of criteria are considered including customer service, business involvement and collaboration, input from the public and licensing and permitting. Each community will be evaluated on an individual basis. Communities deemed business-friendly will be presented with a certificate, DOT road sign and become a key part of Maine’s business attraction strategy.
There are many community officials that value the importance of reducing government red tape and streamlining processes so that job creation may occur. This program recognizes those communities that are leading by example and encouraging collaborations between municipalities and businesses to spur job growth. “Our Department will work with any Maine community that wants to earn this designation; we want every Maine city and town to be business-friendly,” said DECD Commissioner George Gervais.
The next round of certified BusinessFriendly Communities is expected to be announced in early November.

in Tax Rankings AUGUSTA – The Tax Foundation released recently its 2013 State Business Tax Climate Index comparing tax rates and policies across states. Maine saw the greatest improvement in its tax ranking this year, moving from 37th to 30th on the list. The positive momentum is attributable to the LePage Administration’s efforts to reduce the tax burden on Maine residents and businesses, according to the Tax Foundation. The Index specifically identifies the repeal of the individual alternative minimum tax for individuals and the expiration of a temporary ban on net operating loss carry forwards as two key factors in the tax climate improvement. “The reduction of the tax burden on residents and businesses will lead to more and better jobs in Maine,” said Governor LePage. “It is notable that Maine had the most sizable rank improvement this year, as a result of the repeal of our individual alternative minimum tax and a change in treatment of net operating losses. By removing burdensome government regulations the people of Maine will prosper again.” Within New England, Maine ranked higher than Connecticut (40th), Rhode Island (46th), and Vermont (47th). Maine’s corporate tax component improved 6 places from 2012 to 2013, the secondmost for any state, and the individual income tax component improved 3 places, tied with Idaho for the most in the nation. Additional changes to Maine’s tax structure, including lower brackets for individual income taxes that take effect January 1, 2013, were not considered in this year’s report and will likely result in even further improvements in Maine’s ranking. Estimates indicate approximately 440,000 Maine resident returns will have an average reduction in their individual income tax liability of $340 in tax year 2013, an average decrease of 11 percent. A family of four, according to Maine Revenue Service, with $50,000 of Maine Adjusted Gross Income will have a reduction of $300 or a 25 percent cut.

If a good idea occurs to you, what do you do? Do you go to your manager and share it with him or her so you can give it a try? Or do you merely shove the idea to the back of your mind and ignore it? Unfortunately, many great ideas get shelved this way and never see the light of day. The next time a great or even good idea occurs to you, and you automatically dismiss it or ignore it, think on this: If you never try, you will never succeed. Give it a shot and see what happens.

In In a a world world where where technology technology is is everywhere, everywhere, there there is is nothing nothing that that will will ever ever replace replace the the personal personal contact contact that that the the handshake handshake provides. provides. The handshake is the single most important non-verbal form of communication in which we are judged by others. A positive handshake offers a bridge to future relationships and opportunities. It can reveal information about you, including: what kind of person you are, your personality and your sincerity. To appreciate the importance of the handshake, it may be helpful to learn about it. Some History The ritual of the handshake began during the Middle Ages, not out of friendship, but out of fear and distrust. Imagine living in a world where there was always the threat of danger. In order to protect oneself from wild animals, bandits or thieves, it was common to carry and conceal a weapon for protection. The right hand was used to hold onto a weapon because the left hand was considered evil. When two strangers, both carrying weapons met, there were limited
options. The choices were to: fight each other, let each other continue on their way or possibly become friends. Friendship began when both individuals either put their weapons on the ground or opened their right forearms to prove that nothing was concealed that would harm the other. That act of connection is how the handshake began. The Norm Today we shake hands for a variety of reasons throughout the day, at business meetings, and interviews and during social and special occasions. Until the 1930’s, handshaking was used exclusively by men. It was the tradition for a lady to curtsey with a slightly bent knee, lowering the body, the dress held out to the sides. When women joined the workforce, handshaking became the norm for everyone.
styles, all of which provide numerous combinations and variations. If you take the time to learn how to shake hands, you will be able to gain more insight and be better able to decipher the messages behind the handshakes you receive. For example, a bone-crushingtwisting combination often reveals a dominant and aggressive personality. A handshake that feels like a dead fish sometimes reflects a total disinterest and lack of personality. A sloppy handshake may be reflective of someone who is unsure about how to shake hands and may have limited social skills and experience. How to Shake Hands In case you needed some brushing up, here is a basic rundown of how to shake hands:
Revealing Styles
• Extend your hand with your thumb pointed upward and your four other fingers straight ahead
There are a variety of handshake
• Grasp hands so that the web of
your hand matches the same point on the other person • Do not offer (or take) just the fingers • Hold firmly, but without a crushing grip • Pump two or three times while making eye contact • The handshake should last two or three seconds Helen Keller, blind and deaf from birth, was reputed to have the ability to recognize and remember individuals from their handshake for up to two years after a single meeting. You only have one chance to make a good first impression. Your handshake is your personal signature and a reflection about who you are. No one has a handshake that feels exactly like the one you offer. With confidence and practice your handshake will be remembered, even if your name is forgotten.

Reviving a stalled job search (ARA) - With record numbers of people seeking employment, competition is fierce for any job in any industry. If you're looking for work, it might seem difficult to know how to stand out from the crowd. For anyone feeling stalled in their job search, a few simple steps could put the wind back in their sails. "When I talk with students who are discouraged, the first question I ask is, 'What are you doing?' Nine times out of 10 they're on the computer," says Chasity Trzop, director of Career Services at Brown Mackie College - Louisville. “The computer is a passive job search. You are one of a thousand online, with about a 10 percent chance of getting an interview if you have done nothing face-to-face with the company. You must get out and interact with people," Trzop says. Treat a job search like a job. Trzop reminds graduates that searching for a job is a job, and should be treated as such. A good rule of thumb is to do 10 things each day in support of your job search. "Five of those things can be done online, like finding and applying for jobs, and writing emails to strengthen your career network. The other five things should be personal contact with people who may be able to help. Get up and meet with people face to face," says Trzop. Join professional associations. Students at Brown Mackie College Louisville learn early during their academic program the importance of building a professional network. They are encouraged to join student clubs and professional associations in support of their major. The affiliations are helpful in securing an externship, and indispensable when searching for employment. Attending association functions puts you in front of people who may be hiring. "No one knows how wonderful you are if you're hiding behind your computer," Trzop says. "Go to events, and carry your resume with you." Volunteer to apprentice without pay.
Volunteering to work without pay can go a long way toward finding a job. "Offer your service to someone in the field you want to enter. Ask if you can shadow him or her for a few days," Trzop recommends. "Who wouldn't want free labor? It's no skin off your nose if they say no." Trzop has seen many students gain on-the-job experience this way. Several proved to be so useful that the company created jobs for them. Volunteer for community service. Make productive use of your time. "Volunteer for any type of community service that interests you," Trzop says. It provides numerous benefits. It gets you out of the house and introduces you to new people. "You never know when you'll meet someone who may be hiring. The experience also looks great on a resume, and can fill gaps in employment," she says. Use the phone to your best advantage. Trzop tells graduates to keep in touch. After meeting people in the industry, call them to solidify the relationship. Ask for information on which companies may be hiring. "Make excuses for calling," she says. "If your profession requires certification, call your contacts when it comes through." Social websites aren't just for small talk. "More and more people are turning to social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn in their search for employment," says Trzop. "The websites make it easy to connect with others who share your interests." Brown Mackie College - Louisville has even begun to use LinkedIn to find intern candidates and promote internship fairs. Now you are armed with specific knowledge on how to conduct your job search from a career service professional. "Keep a positive attitude and do the legwork that will put you out in front of people," Trzop says. "I tell our school's graduates, 'School is boot camp. Now go out and be a soldier.'"
