Located east of Emporia, Camp Alexander is 90 acres of woods, ponds and rolling meadows with fitness and biking trails, a nine-hole golf course and water sports. Edward Jones Alexander, a freed slave who settled in the area after the Civil War, left all of his savings and 40 acres to the orphaned and needy children of Emporia, Lyon County, and the State of Kansas. Camp Alexander offers 10 consecutive weekly camps for children ages 6-14. Additionally the Youth Leadership Program offers teens ages 13-14 the opportunity to enjoy all camp activities while also building upon their levels of responsibility and leadership. Families could be eligible for multi-child discounts or scholarships. Register early as some camps are prone to selling out. Traditional Camps, ages 7-17 Traditional Camp is Camp Wood YMCA’s most popular option and introduces campers to a variety of classic camp activities (horseback riding, swimming, archery, etc.) while also allowing campers the opportunity to customize the week to their interests with daily “skillbuilders” and cabin choice activities. The Emporia Arts Center features summer classes for all ages and skill levels, from those who are just ready to get their hands dirty — sometimes literally — to those who are ready to take their craft to the next level. After a one-night stay at camp, these adventurers will head to Colorado where they’ll experience two days of climbing and two days of whitewater rafting. Inside Out, ages 11-14 Inside Out is a leadership camp designed for youth ages 11-14. What if you were turned inside out, and all that people saw was what’s on the inside? Inside Out is designed to teach young leaders to consider people and leadership challenges from the inside out. Come explore the fun of camp while exploring your own leadership style. By the end of the week, you’ll know yourself better, have gained new skills and be prepared to serve as a role model for your peers.

Weekly Flint Hills Tours Every Saturday AprilOctober Prairie Earth Tours has made it their business to help people appreciate the prairie. Hop on our bus with seasoned guide, Casey Cagle, and hear historical stories from the region, see hidden gems, and enjoy a scenic drive through one of the most treasured landscapes in North America. Tours depart from the Flying W Ranch, 1515 G Road, Cedar Point, at 1:30 p.m. and return at approximately 4:30 p.m. Bookings must be made in advance.

Prairie Sunset Tour Whether it’s a solo adventure, family vacation or a romantic getaway, the Flint Hills are a magical place to visit. We’re making it even easier to get the whole experience with our two-hour guided bus tour. Book a seat on one of our Friday evening tours this year. This is a fun and relaxing tour with seasoned tour guide, Casey Cagle. Learn about what makes the Flint Hills region such an important ecosystem, hear flint hills folklore, and sit back, relax, and enjoy the view. All bookings must be made in advance. May 31 is the summer deadline for several Emporia Recreation youth summer sports camps. Opening Day at Jones Aquatic Center

Splash Days

Start your summer off with a splash at Jones Aquatic Center! Opening Day is from noon-8 p.m. May 25. Admission is $5 for adults 16 and over, $3 ages 4-15, children 3 and under free with a paid adult. Everyone who attends opening day will receive a coupon for a half price swim redeemable any other day of the summer 2016. And don’t forget about Twilight Swim Nights — from 5 - 8 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It’s only $2.50 for adults, $1.50 for youth. Camp Wilson Camp Wilson is a funfilled, week-long day camp sponsored by Emporia Recreation Commission held at Wilson Park on the ESU Campus. There are seven weekly sessions to choose from, beginning June 3, and the cost per week is $60 for

Former ESU Tennis Coach, George Milton, will be the instructor for youth tennis offered by the Emporia Recreation Commission. The first session runs June 3- June 12 with eight lessons. Session 2 is July 8-18 and Session 3 runs from July 22Aug. 1. Pick the session that fits your busy summer! Lessons are held at ESU Milton Tennis Courts and the program has three age levels from 5 years to 14, with fees from $30 to $50, depending on age group. Junior Golf Emporia Recreation Commission is offering a six-week Junior Golf program for ages 7 -14 years old, on Tuesdays beginning June 4, or Thursdays beginning June 6. Participants will meet at Lee Beran Recreation Center at 1 p.m. and ride our bus to Emporia Municipal Golf Course, returning at 3 p.m. Kids will learn the fundamentals of golf along with the proper etiquette of the game. Bring your own clubs if possible; loaner clubs may be available for checkout if needed. The fee of $55 for residents of USD 253 and $60 non-residents includes transportation and green fees. NEW! Adult Co-Ed Water Volleyball Ready for a new sport this summer? How about Adult Co-Ed Water Volleyball at Jones Aquatic Center? This is not your ordinary volleyball league! This game incorporates some of the rules of volleyball with a little different scoring. Teams may include up to four players. But once European settlers’ prairie schooners rolled to a stop, the mariners of the prairie turned their gazes toward the Farmer’s Almanac and their noses to the grindstone. With no perceived useful purpose, the skies became the dominion of dreamers. But on the open prairie, it is only the vast sky that ground us — and the North Star that guides us.

Red Rocks State Historic Site, the home of the William Allen White family, is the place for a summer series of art and informal talks. Sunday at the Site — held at 2 p.m. Sundays — was inspired by the White family’s legendary hospitality. If a member of the family was on the porch of their Emporia home, guests were welcome to join them for a visit. Programs in 2019 will be held on June 9, June 23, July 14 and July 28. programs are moved inside to the visitor’s center.) Programs run from 45 minutes to an hour, usually with time for questions and answers afterward. The visitors center has plenty of seating and air conditioning. Red Rocks State Historic Site is one of 16 state historic sites operated by the Kansas Historical Society, a state agency. Although Red Rocks is a State Historical Site, it does not receive state funds. All programs, restoration and maintenance are paid for via donations and grants. Red Rocks events are

presented in cooperation with the William Allen White Community Partnership, Inc. Red Rocks State Historic Site, home of the Pulitzer-prize winning editor and owner of The Emporia Gazette, is located at 927 ExchangeStreet. Animals at Night 3 P.M. JUNE 10, LARGE MEETING ROOM This is a special program presented by the David Traylor Zoo! For humans, the setting sun tells them it’s time to sleep. But while they quietly dream, a whole world of animals is just waking up! What do these animals do and how do they see, move and hunt in the dark?
