Located east of Emporia, Camp Alexander is 90 acres of woods, ponds and rolling meadows with fitness and biking trails, a nine-hole golf course and water sports. Edward Jones Alexander, a freed slave who settled in the area after the Civil War, left all of his savings and 40 acres to the orphaned and needy children of Emporia, Lyon County, and the State of Kansas. Camp Alexander offers 10 consecutive weekly camps for children ages 6-14. Additionally the Youth Leadership Program offers teens ages 13-14 the opportunity to enjoy all camp activities while also building upon their levels of responsibility and leadership. Families could be eligible for multi-child discounts or scholarships. Register early as some camps are prone to selling out. Traditional Camps, ages 7-17 Traditional Camp is Camp Wood YMCA’s most popular option and introduces campers to a variety of classic camp activities (horseback riding, swimming, archery, etc.) while also allowing campers the opportunity to customize the week to their interests with daily “skillbuilders” and cabin choice activities. The Emporia Arts Center features summer classes for all ages and skill levels, from those who are just ready to get their hands dirty — sometimes literally — to those who are ready to take their craft to the next level. Paint a Pet, Clay Wheel Throwing and Design with a Splash of Wine (or Juice, for the kids) remain some of the most popular classes and will be back this summer.

Day Camps, ages 6-13 Now offering Traditional and Horse Day Camps. Join Camp Wood YMCA for all the fun of summer camp from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Just like overnight campers, day campers learn new skills, build character and make new friends while at camp.
Mini-Camps, ages 5-8 Mini-Camp is a fourday, three-night session for children ages 5 - 8 and is based on the Traditional Camp model. Mini-camp introduces new campers to a variety of classic camp activities (archery, swimming, horseback riding, etc.) while tailoring each program to the unique needs of the youngest campers.
Teen Camps, ages 13-17 Teen camps are de signed with Camp Wood YMCA’s oldest campers in mind — allowing them to experience their favorite activities like the Alpine Tower and canoeing while also trying new activities geared for the unique interests and skill levels of teenagers.
Leadership Camps, ages 11-17 Empower each child or teen to explore their strengths as a leader during one of the popular leadership camps. Whether they join Camp Wood YMCA’s staff as a future counselor or wrangler, or they hope to make a difference in their school and community, these camps offer training and activities to suit their goals.

Top Camp Chef, ages 10-17 Take that love of cooking to camp where campers learn skills to make them a top chef. Campers will spend their mornings in a large industrial kitchen learning meal planning, recipes, menu development and, of course, cooking. Campers also get to eat their creations!
Paddle and Climb Trip, ages 14-17 New this year to Camp Wood YMCA, campers will embark on a week-long off-camp adventure. After a one-night stay at camp, these adventurers will head to Colorado where they’ll experience two days of climbing and two days of whitewater rafting. Led by professional outfitters and supervised by Camp Wood YMCA staff, this will an awesome trip for the young adventurer.
Inside Out, ages 11-14 Inside Out is a leadership camp designed for youth ages 11-14. What if you were turned inside out, and all that people saw was what’s on the inside? Inside Out is designed to teach young leaders to consider people and leadership challenges from the inside out. Come explore the fun of camp while exploring your own leadership style. By the end of the week, you’ll know yourself better, have gained new skills and be prepared to serve as a role model for your peers.
