small-town Kansas kid to campus remains the same. During a campus visit, Dr. Winston Cram, head of the physical science department at that time, reassured me that if I ever ran into difficulties on campus, I should come to him for help. That simple act of reassurance was the single most important ingredient in my decision to come to Emporia. I originally enrolled in pre-engineering coursework planning to transfer after two years for an engineering degree, but I enjoyed my experience here so much that I stayed and graduated with an education degree in math and science. During my four years, I became involved in campus life and student government and developed what became a career and life-long engagement in the political process. Then-ESU President John King became a mentor to me. Shortly after graduation as I walked in front of Plumb Hall, President King shouted out through his open window: “Ed, I just got a letter from Sen. (James) Pearson. He’s got an opening in Washington, D.C., that would allow you to work on a master’s degree.” Two weeks later I was on the job in D.C. I earned a master’s degree in government at George Washington University and later earned a doctor-
While many rejoice when spring arrives after the gray cold dreariness of winter, we in education look to the hot days of August for our sense of renewal. Each year, the return of students to the Emporia State University campus signals a new beginning. In August 1960, I arrived at ESU — it was called Kansas State Teachers College then — to embark on my own new beginning. Now 51 years later, I have returned to assist the University in its transition to a new president. I am humbled and honored to be invited to this assignment. Much has changed on campus in half a century. When I arrived, Butcher Education Center, current home to the Center for Early Childhood Education, had just opened as a laboratory elementary school. The Towers Complex, Visser Hall and the HPER building had not been built. Although the physical landscape has changed, the ESU spirit that drew this
ate in political science at The University of Kansas and have spent most of my career teaching, researching and engaging in politics and government. President King’s simple act profoundly changed the direction of my life. The simple acts of faculty and staff here at Emporia State have made an extraordinary difference in my life, and I encourage each of you to seek out assistance if you encounter difficulties or have questions about your plans while here on campus. Every member of the faculty and staff is here to aid in your new beginning here at Emporia State, and I believe you will find the same atmosphere on campus today that I found — a caring, engaged faculty and staff who will take a personal interest in your development and empower you to succeed. As you embark on this chapter of your life at ESU, I encourage you to get involved in campus life and the Emporia community. Explore your interests and find your passions. Welcome to a new year knowing that once you become a part of the ESU community, you will be a Hornet for the rest of your life. Go Hornets! H. Edward Flentje Interim President

renovations ongoing at esu’s memorial union By Monica Springer

New, sleek and modern. Those words will come to mind when students enter the newly renovated Memorial Union at Emporia State University. While the construction will be 100 percent done in the spring of 2012, a large chunk of the building is scheduled to be completed when students return this month. “We’re very excited,” said Dave Hendricks, director of the Memorial Union. Hendricks said the new dining space will be done, as well as an adjacent lobby and the main lobby. The renovations feature various shades of gold paint on the walls, as well as tire and carpet squares throughout the building. There are also lounge areas for students with chairs and tables. The residential dining hall will have various food stations, including a large pizza oven and stations that will have subs and hamburgers. The pizza oven is so large that crews had to bring it into the building before an exterior wall was built, Hendricks said. Construction began on the building in June 2010. Hendricks said construction is on time and below budget. The original budget was $25 million, paid for by student fees, with $18.5 million of that money going to construction and the rest going to architect fees, surveys and furniture. Hendricks said the bids came in under budget and the project will end up costing about $22.5 million, $1.5 million under budget. A committee of ESU faculty and students are in the process of selecting photographs and artwork to put on the walls, Hendricks said. Flat screen televisions will also be placed at the building’s main entrances, Hendricks said, and the televisions will broadcast important messages to students. One television is already in the east entrance and the messaging system works on it, Hendricks said. In late July students stopped at the screen to read important announcements. Work has started on the basement and on the upper floors. The conference center will be enhanced. On Sept. 6 the ballroom and all meeting rooms to the north and west will be taken offline and turned over to the contractor for demolition, Hendricks said. That includes the Skyline Dining Room, the Kanza and the Flint Hills rooms. Student publications will have to make do in a temporary location until its offices are complete, which should be a few weeks after school starts.
