LETTER
Hi Disc Golf fans, It seems like just yesterday I was writing the intro for the first issue of the Chasin’ the Chains Magazine, which made its debut during the 2017 Glass Blown Open. A year later and so much has changed, yet so much has stayed the same with this sport that we all love so much. Each year our sport elevates to new heights and takes on a new level of professionalism. We have more sponsored players than ever before collecting a monthly salary so they can stay on the road for the entire season. When you pull up to a major disc golf event, you see more RVs and wrapped vehicles than ever before. It is an exciting time, and we should all be proud of our own individual contributions to Grow Disc Golf! Dynamic Discs had an incredible year in 2017, and for that I can’t thank the disc golf community enough. I’m one of the fortunate to say I get to work in the disc golf industry every day and one to say that I continue to wake up each morning excited to see what all can be accomplished. Dynamic Discs was recognized by Forbes Magazine for having the best community engagement and the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce awarded Dynamic Discs the 2017 Emporia Business of the Year! We have so much to be thankful for, and so much of this thanks goes to the disc golf community that continues to support Dynamic Discs. The Glass Blown Open is a special week for all of us at Dynamic Discs. It is something that we plan for year-round. With more than 1,600 players competing in the PDGA National Tour and A-Tier event, it is without a doubt the largest event in the history of disc golf. It is no small task to coordinate this crazy week that now encompasses so much to celebrate the sport. The GBO is so much more than just a disc golf event; it is a celebration of the sport! We all look forward to bringing the disc golf family back together each year in Emporia, Kansas. At Dynamic Discs, our efforts to Grow Disc Golf are evident and intentional, and I encourage you to spend one day this year in your community to sprinkle the disc golf seed to see just what might happen. Share your Grow Disc Golf Day story with us and the disc golf community and know that it takes all of us working together to continue to raise the bar and get disc golf further recognized. Emporia Knows Disc Golf, and we greatly value our relationship with the entire Emporia community. We are fortunate to be the host of the PDGA Junior World Championships this year (July 11-14) and for the next two years. We also feel there is no better place to bring the world championships back together every five years. We have presented the PDGA with the proposal to allow an event of this magnitude (the combined World Championships) to be hosted every five years and have Dynamic Discs and the City of Emporia as the first to host. If you think this is a good idea, I encourage you to send your thoughts to the PDGA Board. Thanks for allowing me to continue to be a part of everything! I love this sport. I love the passion. I love this community. n

Ricky Wysocki had a big decision to make at a young age.
A
s a high school student, Wysocki excelled on the baseball diamond. A native of Brunswick, Ohio, he was also known for his talent on the disc golf course. So, he had options. He could go to college and continue to hone his baseball skills in hopes of someday playing professionally, or he could throw caution to the wind and pursue a career in disc golf. 6 WWW.CHASINTHECHAINSMAGAZINE.COM

“A lot of my local buddies were telling me I was good and I could pursue disc golf as a career,” he said. “Instead of baseball, I decided to focus on disc golf and make that my career.” It was a choice that wasn’t initially well-received by everyone in the Wysocki household. “It definitely took my parents a while to warm up to my new career path,” he said. “I mean, who wouldn’t want to have their son playing in the major leagues? But, they eventually came around.” Two world championships later, it’s safe to say everything worked out just fine. Wysocki entered the 2018 season coming off of backto-back world championships and one tournament win shy of 100 for his career. Tied with Paul McBeth for the No. 1 ranking in the world, Wysocki won 14 of the 29 tournaments he entered in 2017 and finished outside of the top five only twice. The year before, he won 14 of 25 tournaments. His success, however, starts long before he ever tees off on Day 1. He often shows up to the upcoming tournament site three or four days before competition actually begins and spends his time getting to know every nook and cranny of the course. “I like to get out on the course to practice and keep to myself,” Wysocki said. “Those practice rounds are super important. That just allows me to feel comfortable once I step up to tee off at tournament time. It’s about developing a lot of muscle memory on every hole.” That preparation focuses on both the physical and mental aspects of the game. Playing the course several times before the tournament helps give him the confidence required to outlast his opponents in what he describes as a “mental battle.” Being properly prepared mentally also requires a certain attitude — a positivity that can only be cultivated through confidence and, ideally, winning. “To get to that next step, you have to feel like you can beat the best players in the world — or play with them consistently,” he said. “The best player in the world got there because he’s won a couple tournaments; he’s been there. The mental game is so touchy. It’s almost impossible to 8 WWW.CHASINTHECHAINSMAGAZINE.COM
continued on page 10 »
Just ask four-time world champion Paige Pierce. She’ll likely concur. “The mental aspect is still the same,” she said, referring to whether or not winning has become harder since Elaine King and Juliana Korver won their Open Women’s Division record five titles. “The skills are more polished every year. There are more tools and more people are playing, so there’s more competition. So, I think it’s still maybe a little bit harder to get to the No. 1 spot. But the mental aspect is still the same. “What sets the World Championships apart from the rest of the tournaments is that it’s such a strenuous week — it’s really a mental game.” A lot goes into developing the mental fortitude it takes to claim a world championship, let alone four.
Pierce said part of her growth into becoming one of the sport’s all-time most dominant players was tasting success early on. She was only 19 when she won her first championship. Now, at 26, she’s as confident as ever as she looks to tie King and Korver in the record books. “After winning my first one, I just had that confidence and awareness that I could do it,” she said. “I thought I could do it then, but after winning I knew I could do it and I just thought I was only going to get better.” Cultivating those mental skills can, in some ways, be done in the same manner one would improve on the physical aspects of the game: practice. Pierce labels herself as a lifelong learner of the game, but she also knows there’s an element of self-awareness one must be able to harness. continued on page 11 » Chasin’ the Chains 9
master it. You have to train your mind to think in positive terms. Everyone gets nervous, but you have to get to the mental capacity where you can turn those nerves into something positive.” Wysocki truly started to see potential in himself when he turned pro in 2009. By 2012, he was already challenging the top players in the game atop the leaderboard at the world championships. But it was a process, and he was finally able to break through with his first world title in 2016. That, he said, took a massive amount of pressure off of his shoulders, and he set out to back it up in 2017. With his game getting stronger both physically and mentally, he’d earned his place among the top players in the world. But it didn’t come easy. “There’s a fine line between playing your best and playing the best,” he said. “There are a lot of good players, and to win a world championship, you have to play the best. It takes a subtle buildup.” Growing up in disc golf, Wysocki had some hometown inspiration. He learned by playing the same course as fellow world champions Avery and Valarie Jenkins, so he became a fan of the sport early on. He was able to take what he was learning from his own idols in the sport — hometown and otherwise — and build that into his own success. That, he said, is a practice he recommends for those who are just getting acquainted with the sport. “The number one thing I think, looking back, is to take little bits and pieces of the people that you look up to, but put your own twist on it,” he said. “Make sure you’re focusing on yourself and doing things to where you feel comfortable with them. If you set out and dedicate yourself to be a world champion, you can do it. It just takes the right mindset.” Part of the confidence and positivity Wysocki exudes on the course comes from the support he receives off of it. A member of the Latitude 64 team, he said the Trilogy atmosphere has helped propel him to the next level not only through the products they provide, but also from the confidence he’s gained from their backing. That support extends to more than just disc golf itself. continued on page 12 »

As just about anyone who has ever played the game can attest, disc golf can present a fair amount of frustration. Dealing with those setbacks and being able to power through can make the difference between a championship round and going home empty-handed. “Generally speaking, I think my mental game is pretty strong,” Pierce said. “That is what’s going to propel you to win tournaments. Everyone is going to have moments where they struggle — they struggle on a hole or over a three-hole stretch. Part of it is about expanding the limitations of what you can endure. Like, how many trees can I hit before I start to get mad? Expanding my limitations has been a huge factor.” Her limitations will likely be tested this season. Coming off of a dominant 2017 during which she won 22 of the 28 tournaments she entered and never finished outside of the top five, Pierce knows there’s a target on her back in 2018. She expects fellow toplevel players such as Catrina Allen, Valerie Jenkins, Sarah Hokom and Lisa Fajkus to be at the top of their games this season as they look to prevent her from enjoying the same level of success. Pierce welcomes the challenge. She knows as she enters her second full season with the backing of Dynamic Discs that she will continue to thrive with that support behind her. Couple that with a growing fanbase, and she knows the motivation factors are there for her to achieve what she said has always been her long-term goal — to match, and eventually surpass, King and Korver. “The fans are a huge part of my success,” she said. “It motivates you because you want to excite the fans, and that’s what’s going to grow the sport. It’s so fulfilling to get messages from parents who show their kids wearing a shirt of mine or throwing a disc of mine. continued on page 13 »

As hard of a worker as Wysocki is on the course, he is a grinder in the business world as well. His personal brand has grown exponentially in the last couple years thanks to his championship-level play. That has allowed him to grow his own line of equipment and apparel, Sockibomb. “It gives people an opportunity to feel connected with me,” he said. “If someone sends me an email through the Sockibomb website, I will respond to them myself. There is a business side to me, and that is Sockibomb. I think it could be a success. I feel like I have a lot of cool stuff to offer.” Along with the website, Wysocki also will be running his own Sockibomb clinic series this season and will have booths set up at tournaments. It’s a chance for him to help grow the sport while also allowing him to expand his personal brand. That brand is something that doesn’t look to be fading away any time soon. At age 24, Wysocki has already achieved a lot more than many athletes do in an entire career — and he’s just getting started. “To win five or six (world championships) is my overall goal,” he said. “Of course, you never want to limit yourself. If you reach one goal, you set a new goal. But I’m 24 years old, so I feel like I’ve got eight to 10 more tries at winning another one.” n
There isn’t much that could be better than that.” Though there are risks one must take to someday know that feeling — to see children wearing their apparel and throwing their discs — Pierce said it again comes down to a strong mental approach. She said the best advice she could give someone who dreams of becoming a world champion would be to have faith in themselves and go for it. After all, that’s what she did. “You have to be competitive,” Pierce said. “As an athlete, you have to believe in yourself; you have to believe that you’re going to win. Otherwise, you’re not going to get your body to do so.” And the four-time champion believes she’s got plenty of success in her future. In five years, she hopes to have won a couple more world championships while also being a part of the continued rapid growth of the sport. “I feel like I’m in my prime and getting better,” she said. “I feel like I’m not going anywhere any time soon.” A scary thought for her competitors. n

Dynamic Discs Media Director Bobby Brown is leaving a lasting legacy on the sport
16 WWW.CHASINTHECHAINSMAGAZINE.COM
Brown started volunteering his time, energy and equipment to help grow the Dynamic Discs brand and the overall popularity of the sport in 2009. In the nine years since, he’s become the full-time media director for the second largest disc golf company in the world. He manages two other full-time media employees and is a pioneer in disc golf media for his work with video and several social media platforms. “I have to pinch myself every now and then,” said Brown, who might be better known by his moniker, CoolDaddySlickBreeze. “It almost brings a tear to my eye to think about it. There are a lot of talented people out there and I know I’m no Steven Spielberg or anything like that, but the variable
Chasin’ the Chains 17
I have is that I will outwork them. The fact that I’ve been able to create this pathway for myself is incredible. I don’t think I could have done it 20 years ago, so I’m fortunate for the time period I’ve been involved.” Along with his behind-the-scenes work, Brown has co-hosted Disc Golf Answer Man — a podcast with disc golf professional and former world champion Eric McCabe and Dynamic Discs Team Manager Robert McCall — since 2013. In the five years since its inception, the show has grown to be a leading source for disc golf information, education and entertainment. That in itself has propelled Brown to celebrity status. While he may not have ever intended to find that particular level of success himself, it is a byproduct of his larger plan for the company and his tenacious work ethic. 18 WWW.CHASINTHECHAINSMAGAZINE.COM
“I wanted to be that average guy who maybe isn’t the best player — maybe goes out and plays once or twice a week, if that — but loves the sport who people can connect with.” “Part of my strategy was to create personalities, to help the players market themselves and play off of who they are,” he said. “I kind of feel like I hacked into the system. When I’m going around to these tournaments, I’m getting asked for my autograph more than some of the players do because people feel like they can connect with me. I wanted to be that average guy who maybe isn’t the best player — maybe goes out and plays once or twice a week, if that — but loves the sport who people can connect with.”
No sights on disc golf Brown may now be a household name in the disc golf community, but that was never on his radar growing up. The son of an Air Force father, he lived in Panama, Okinawa, Chicago and Ohio before his family finally settled in Oklahoma when he was 11 years old. He lived what he considers a “normal, high school life,” but didn’t feel college was for him. After graduation, he was living paycheck-topaycheck — paying rent one month and making a car payment the next — before moving back in with his parents and, eventually, following in his father’s footsteps by joining the military. Brown spent four years in the U.S. Marine Corp. and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, for two. He doesn’t regret his time in the military, but said making a career out of it was not in the cards. Chasin’ the Chains 19
“I wasn’t that great, but I was learning. I just thought, ‘If I wanna do anything in media — if I want to make any kind of impact or leave any kind of legacy — I believe this could be it.’” Soon after, he was creating training videos and learning he had a knack for video production. He eventually had his own little production studio within the company and began to branch out, doing commercials for local churches among other odd jobs. That was when he was first introduced to disc golf.
The birth of CoolDaddySlickBreeze
“It was very strict and I just didn’t see a real future in it,” he said. “I’d been in the Marines for four years and hadn’t really moved up much in the ranks.” He moved back home, where he spent time working retail and eventually worked his way up to store manager at The Buckle. But, after meeting some of the other managers at the store and within the company, he knew that wasn’t what he wanted
to do long-term, either. Next, Brown found himself working as a member services representative at a local credit union. Oddly enough, that turned out to be where he ended up getting his feet wet and developing a passion in the world of media after making the switch to IT. “I started a weekly podcast with the CEO of the company,” he said. “People loved it.”

A good friend, Jeremy Taylor, had a father who had land just outside of Pawhuska, Oklahoma. There, he built two disc golf courses and planned to bring a big tournament to town. Until that point, Brown said he had “never even heard of disc golf.” But his friend made him a deal — he would run a 5K with Brown, if he agreed to play a round of disc golf in return. “After that first round, I was like, ‘This is the dumbest thing ever,’” he said. He started working with Taylor’s father, however, to help market his tournament. As he spent time around the sport, he started playing more and learning more about it. Somewhere in that process, a lightbulb went off. “That’s when I realized there wasn’t a whole lot of disc golf media going on,” Brown said. “I wasn’t that great, but I was learning. I just thought, ‘If I wanna do anything in media — if I want to make any kind
Chasin’ the Chains 21
of impact or leave any kind of legacy — I believe this could be it.’ I believed I could do better than anything that was going on at the time.” He decided to dive in head-first. Though he admits it could be disputed, with 1,000 feet of ethernet cord running from the Taylor home to the back of his Ford Expedition parked near Hole 17 and 18 of the Green Country Open, he broadcasted what could have been the first live video from a disc golf tournament. He got somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 viewers, including one from Australia. He was hooked. From there he started doing promotional and highlight videos for the PDGA, and through his involvement with the league, he met the owner and founder of a fledgling disc golf brand out of Emporia, Kansas — Jeremy Rusco.
“All three of us [Brown, “I thought, ‘If I want to get my foot in the McCabe and door of disc golf media, this is who I want to connect with,’” Brown said. McCall] “He had the RV and the showmanship; he get along had music playing, and I just saw success happening, I knew he was going to go somewhere if so well. disc golf was going to go anywhere.” People are so hungry for Marketing himself saw his ticket into the disc golf world, information, Brown and he went for it. and they After a brief conversation with Rusco at a tournament in Pawhuska, he followed up with come to us email telling him what he wanted to work and trust us.” an on and asking if there was value in what he
22 WWW.CHASINTHECHAINSMAGAZINE.COM
was peddling. Rusco extended an open-ended invitation to Emporia to discuss the possibility of working together further.
He found an event on the PDGA calendar — the 2009 Glass Blown Open — and went. With no money for a hotel room, he slept in Jones Park in the back of his Expedition the night before the tournament and met up with Rusco the next morning. He ended up making a video montage of the tournament to share with Rusco and some of the players. “People loved it,” Brown said. Dynamic Discs was still in its infancy relative to what it is now, so Rusco was unable to pay Brown for his services. Either way, Brown felt if he kept working at it, this could eventually parlay into a career, so he kept at it. He went to all of the tournaments within a few hours of his home in northern Oklahoma, making videos for Dynamic Discs at each stop. Eventually, he asked if he could be paid. Rusco agreed to provide gas money. In time, Brown was able to make a little money on the side selling DVDs of his full-round coverage. On them, he shot all of the video, edited them and even provided commentary — sometimes getting help from the likes of McCabe. The DVDs eventually turned to online pay-per-view, but the proliferation of technology allowed more and more to be offered for free on websites such as YouTube.

Not making any money, working what amounted to two full-time jobs at the credit union and his disc golf media, Brown took a year off. When he came back early in the 2013 season, on a whim, he proposed a simple question to Rusco. “I said, ‘When are you just going to hire me full-time to do your computer and video stuff?’” Brown recalled. After months of talk and sharing their vision for what a full-time media job at Dynamic Discs would entail, Brown was on his way to make a new home in Emporia. That meant he was again possibly breaking new ground. “I’m not sure about this, but I may be the first dedicated, full-time social media/media person there has ever been in disc golf,” he said. “That’s my understanding, anyway. It’s been really cool. Between the podcast, video, YouTube and everything else we’re doing, I think the things I’ve done have been a big part of our success. Jeremy definitely has the vision for the company and the 24 WWW.CHASINTHECHAINSMAGAZINE.COM
way he leads and the culture he creates, but I was able to show everyone all of that.”
Growing forward One of the most popular ways in which he’s able to show that is through the podcast. That started in 2013 when he came on full-time. Disc Golf Answer Man came from a humble beginning. A simple post on the Dynamic Discs Facebook page prompting people to send in their questions yielded a couple handfuls of responses. It started with generic questions such as “How can I get more distance on my throws?” Now, more than 200 episodes later, people have bonded with the hosts and the brand, which yields more specific questions about products and tournaments. The show’s success is also helped in no small part by the chemistry between Brown, McCabe and McCall. Together, they’ve become a reliable source on all things disc golf. “All three of us get along so well,” Brown said. “People are so hungry for information, and they come to us and trust us.” The podcast isn’t all that has grown. Just five years ago, Brown said he saw some understandable skepticism from Rusco as far as whether or not a full-time media person was needed. The department has now grown to three full-time employees,
and there is no shortage of work. It’s a trend Brown hopes to see continue. While many are waiting for disc golf to become “mainstream,” he said that isn’t likely to happen overnight. Instead, he expects it will be a gradual process to which there won’t be a “pinpoint” moment at which disc golf will have made it to the level of some other, more widely followed sports. But that’s OK. With the growth of social media and people like himself working tirelessly to get disc golf to the masses, the sport’s popularity is likely to remain on an upward trajectory. “Ten years from now, I’d like to
see us having a department of six or seven people just pumping out content,” Brown said. “I’d like to be able to create some huge campaigns with top-name players. Whatever it takes to get disc golf and the Dynamic Discs logo in front of people, I’m willing to do it.” So far, that’s working out just fine. “I know it doesn’t sound humble — and I always try to be humble — but all of the success I’ve had, I purposely did it,” Brown said. “I’m proud of what I’ve been able to do because my purpose has been to put Dynamic Discs in front of the disc golf community.” n

D
isc golfers are athletes, and they need to train like athletes. Seth Munsey wants disc golfers to remember those words. “I love disc golf, and I would be seeing people hold their shoulders or lower back after playing and I knew with proper exercises — that could help them play injury-free,” Munsey said. Disc golf has an 83 percent injury rate, one of the highest among all sports. Two years ago, Munsey put his degree in kinesiology and his experience working with professional sports teams to work by creating Disc Golf Strong as a way to educate people on the correct ways to train for the sport. “The disc golf throw looks so effortless, but there is a lot going on inside the body as we rotate,” Munsey said. “If you put more force on a muscle or a joint than that muscle or joint can handle, then you get an injury. So, you want to get more strength on your body so there is a bigger buffer zone between you and injury.” Since starting Disc Golf Strong, Munsey has put training videos out on social media, created a new

Working with Pros vs Ams All players need the proper strength training, but the type of training can depend on a player’s skill level. The pros have different needs than recreational players. “The pros tend to have more mobility than the amateur because they are throwing every day, so their joints are more mobile,” Munsey said. “So, we are looking at their joint health and making sure their core is strong. Since the pros have a lot of power and strength already, we are making sure they keep that power and strength and that it can last throughout the season.” The amateurs and older players need to work more on joint mobility so they don’t injure themselves. Strength training, core strength and joint mobility helps create more of a buffer zone to prevent injury. Some of the keys for novices or amateurs are good core strength and good joint strength. “We want muscles around the joint and joint mobility,” so that is my focus right now with everybody,” Munsey said. “Players spend a lot of time on better technique, but what they don’t realize — if you can’t even get yourself into that position — then all the technique drills won’t matter.” Professional Disc Golfer Madison Walker has trained with Munsey for the last two seasons. “The first year I went to him, I was battling elbow tendonitis,” she said. “I wasn’t going through Chasin’ the Chains 27
any therapy or rehab program; I was just trying to get through it on my own. Seth started helping me strengthen the muscles around my elbow and it has helped me immensely and put me on track to playing the best golf of my life.” Walker felt Munsey is breaking new ground with his training. “Disc golf isn’t at the point of everyone having their own trainer like other sports do, so he is the first one and kind of breaking ground,” Walker said. “I have had a ton of questions and messages about the work he is doing, and I realize now that strength training is a big deal for people who play as much as I do. “Seth has so much knowledge — and cares — and that is why he is doing this. He can see people getting hurt because they don’t have knowledge of why and sees the gap and wants to give you knowledge to prevent injuries.”

Online Program Munsey’s work with the pros has sparked interest from all levels of disc golfers asking for more information. That prompted him to create an online program, which is available to everyone. The program is a digital download and can be found at discgolfstrong.com. It is available now. The program starts with body weight and stability exercises and teaches how to move a body through space in a good, strong way. The course is laid out in three phases, and golfers can do it in 4 - 6 weeks. “From the beginning to the end, people will find their core strength is so much stronger,” Munsey said. “To create the power that they already have inside them, their joints are stronger, and (they are) more injury free, resistant and resilient.”
There will be a small cost for the download program, and Munsey has released some free resources online. “I have free warmup exercises that all the pros are doing as well as a jumpstart body, weight-free program,” he said. “Down the road, we will have other programs available — dumbbell and kettlebell programs and more.” For those who have specific needs, Munsey can view a video to learn more of what the biomechanical parts the body are doing. With a video, Munsey can see if a knee is caving, in which case a player needs to build up some stability in their hips so the knee doesn’t cave in. Or, if there is a twisting lower back, it means their hips are tight and they need some core tightening. As disc golfers learn more about the importance of maintaining proper physical strength, Munsey’s mission is simple. “We want everyone to be a resilient disc golfer, being able to throw and throw the next round without being injured, because disc golf is more than a sport, it’s a community and a way of life,” he said. n

stretches & exercises
2
Half-Kneeling Paloff Press - When throwing a disc, you rotate through your upper back and hips while your core stays strong and moves as one piece. This exercise increases anti-rotational core strength and hip stability, both extremely important for improving power transfer and lowering risk of back injuries. Keep shoulder stacked over hip and down knee. You can attach the band to an anchor point if you are training solo. Press band out and hold for 5-10 seconds. Repeat for 6-10 repetitions per side.
1
Shoulder Taps - We need strong healthy shoulders if we want longevity in this game. These improve strength and stability of the shoulders and core. Start on an elevated surface and move towards placing your hands on the ground as you get stronger. Keep body sway to a minimum. Brace your abs like you are preparing for a punch and drive one hand into the ground as you lift the opposite hand towards your shoulder. Perform 6-10 repetitions each side.
4
Band Deadlift - 4 is the top position of deadlift, 5 is bottom position. This exercise improves glute strength, which are the primary power generating muscles in the lower body. Push hips back while keeping knees over toes. Keep lower back from rounding by imagining you have a third eye on your chest and it’s pointed 5-10 feet in front of you. From the bottom position, drive your heels into the ground to stand up tall. Repeat for 8-12 repetitions.
Half-Kneeling Band Row - Strong upper back muscles will keep your shoulders healthy. This exercise strengthens your upper back muscles while also improving hip stability and balance. Keep your shoulders stacked over your hip and down knee. Row with arm on side of the down leg. Perform 8-12 repetitions per side. Switch knees when changing hands.

3
Bent-Over Cross Body Row - This exercise increases upper back strength while also challenging the core to keep from rotating. Push hips back, keeping knees over ankles and weight in heels. Grab the band and pull across your body. As you row, imagine trying to elbow someone directly behind you and keep shoulder from elevating towards your ear. Perform 8-12 reps each side.
6
5
7
Halos - One of my favorite pre-throwing warm-up exercises that opens up the shoulders and improves joint mobility and health. Using a disc, trace a circle around your head. Try and keep the disc as close to your head, and as low to your shoulders as possible. Perform 5-10 each direction.
8
Upper Back Rotations The vertebrae in your upper back (thoracic spine) become immobile overtime and don’t rotate like they should. This can force rotation through the lower back and risk injury. This exercise improves upper back rotation mobility. Hinge at your hips and push the back of one arm into the same side knee. This provides an anchor point to create torque. Bring hands together at bottom, then open hand that’s holding disc towards the sky following with your head and eyes.

stretches & exercises 9
Deadbug - One of the best core strengthening exercises you can do. Trains your core to become strong and stable while moving your limbs. Brace your abs like you’re preparing for a punch. Keep your tailbone lifted off the ground ½ to 1 inch. This will keep your core muscles engaged and keep stress off your lower back. Slowly lower one arm overhead and the opposite leg towards the ground. Keep nonmoving limbs pointed towards the sky. This is a brain challenge as well! Lift both limbs and repeat on opposite side. If you need to adjust the intensity down, start with knees bent. Perform 8-10 repetitions each side.
10
Glute Bridge - The glutes are the strongest muscles in the body and responsible for much of your power generation. Poor glute strength/ activation can result in less power and also increase the risk of lower back pain/injuries. I recommend this exercise daily as a way to get and keep your glutes strong and ready to perform. Drive your heels into the ground and squeeze your glutes together. If your hamstrings cramp up when doing this exercise, you definitely need to do these often. Perform 10-15 repetitions with 2-3 second hold at top.
11
Lateral Lunge - This exercise is not only a great leg and glute strengthener, but also a great warm-up exercise to loosen up your hips. Begin by standing tall with both feet under your hips. Step (lunge) to the side, bending through the moving leg and keeping the opposite leg straight. Keep your weight centered through middle of your foot and drive through the heel of your bent leg to return to standing position. Perform 8-12 repetitions on both sides.
32 WWW.CHASINTHECHAINSMAGAZINE.COM
12
Lateral Hop - Disc golf requires you to create force by pushing your back leg into the ground, and then transfer that force through the body and into the disc. We need power as disc golf athletes. Power is force times velocity. The lateral hop teaches your body how to take force and turn it into power. Jump side-to-side, keeping the width of your jumps arrow in the beginning and widening them as you advance. The best jumps are seen and not heard, so land softly. Perform 6-8 jumps each direction.
13
Shoulder Disc Rotations - Dynamically warming up your shoulders and upper back before throwing is crucial. There are too many shoulder injuries in disc golf and a dynamic warm-up can lower that risk. Bring one arm across your body while using the opposite arm to “pull” the straight arm towards your chest. Hold for a brief second before switching to the opposite side. Refrain from holding too long of a stretch as research has shown static stretching before athletic endeavors can decrease performance. Perform 5-10 repetitions each side.
14
15
Leg Swings- Dynamically warming up the hips and lower leg muscles should be a top priority before playing. Swing one leg forward and backwards while minimizing movement in the lower back. The movement should come from the hip and lower leg only. Keep the toes on the swinging leg pulled up towards your knee. Perform 8-10 swings each direction per leg.
Hip Circles - One of the biggest potential causes of lower back pain can be traced back to poor hip mobility. You need to have the ability to rotate through your hips when throwing. Standing on one leg, draw big circles with the opposite knee. Limit movement through your lower back while doing these. Perform 5-8 repetitions each direction per leg.

The Hollows Disc Golf Course fuels statewide interest in New Hampshire

“
A
mazing” is the word Eric McCabe uses to describe the rise in popularity of disc golf in Manchester, New Hampshire. Three years ago, there was not much of a disc golf scene in the Granite State. Seeing an opportunity, the city leaders of Manchester called McCabe to install a championship, 18-hole course. After two years of use, the popularity has increased so much that city leaders came calling again, this time to expand the course to allow for more players. McCabe could not be happier to see how disc golf is growing. “The feedback has been amazing,” McCabe said. “Going from no golf to now hosting a weekly league that they have to turn people away each week is amazing. With the 18-hole course, they can only get so many people on the course, and a new 18-hole course will double the amount of players that can participate.” Similar sentiments are echoed by City of Manchester Chief of Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries Don Pinard. “There was not much of a scene throughout the state before the Hollows course was put in,” he said. “Ever since then, it has exploded in not only Manchester, but across
46 WWW.CHASINTHECHAINSMAGAZINE.COM
the state. Other cities in New Hampshire see what disc golf is doing for our community by bringing in business and people and they are wanting that also, so disc golf is really growing in the state.” McCabe and Pinard first worked together on the original Hollows course that was installed in 2015. “Eric listened to what I had to say and he developed it from there,” Pinard said. “My vision was a course that amateurs
could play and also attract big-time pros and host large tournaments.” City leaders let McCabe pick where to put the original Hollows course. “They took me to three different areas and said, ‘Which one do you want?’” McCabe said. “All three were public lands, and where the Hollows is now — the location at where it is now — just spoke to me.” After the course was installed, the sport’s popularity grew quickly. Being in charge of

“There was enough room back there to do another 18 if you want…. and they were like, ‘Go for it.’” recreation for the the city, Pinard was pleased with the response. “Disc golf is appealing to many since it’s so affordable for families to play,” he said. “It’s really an inexpensive recreation, and families are looking for that. From a city perspective, courses are affordable for cities to install and maintain.”

“Tree courses are a challenge, and this new course is in a tight, thick woods.”
Pinard had not played disc golf before the course was installed, but now he is an avid fan and plays regularly. The city had contacted McCabe about adding another nine holes, but when he spent time walking the grounds, he discovered they could actually do more. “I got walking through the woods and was like, ‘Holy cow,’” McCabe said. “There was enough room back there to do another 18 if you want…. and they were like, ‘Go for it.’ So, there will be 36 holes in one amazing complex.”. To create the course, it took McCabe three trips to Manchester. He spent a week and a half just walking the woods to see how to connect up the course. “Tree courses are a challenge, and this new course is in a tight, thick woods,” he said. “The trees in the northeast are huge, so a special machine had to be brought in to clear the fairways.” Pinard has been pleased with how the course is coming. Two concrete pads on each hole with a short and a long were created and selected with Dynamic Discs red Veteran Baskets. Pinard and his crews are putting the finishing touches on the course and getting ready for its tournament debut.
Chasin’ the Chains 49
Pinard is pleased with the work of Dynamic Discs and McCabe in helping make these courses a reality. “Dynamic Discs has been great to work with, and Eric McCabe is a true, true gentleman and great ambassador of the sport,” Pinard said. “They have made our vision a reality.” The course ribbon-cutting will be at the beginning of May right before they host the New England Amateur Championships, which is an A-tier event. Pinard is excited the city will be hosting A-tier tournaments, but his goal is to eventually have a National Tournament on the scale that could be considered a Glass Blown Open of the North. n

Event raises money to buy Christmas presents for those in need
Jeremy partners with a nearby church to identify the families in need and pass out the gifts. “Jeremy just overwhelms the families with gifts and takes care of needs they have,” said Deb Bauer, Parish Manager at Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church. “We greatly appreciate their generosity and so do the families.” The concept is, people dye a disc; Hazy Shade then displays the discs, people vote for their favorites and the discs are auctioned off. One hundred percent of the money donated helps buy Christmas gifts for families in need. “When we first started the event, we raised $300 or $400 dollars,”
A
s Jeremy Pennucci’s retail disc golf business has grown, so has his desire to give back. Jeremy and his wife, Leslie, own Hazy Shade Disc Golf, which has two large retail locations in Ohio. They started Dying for a Cause as a way to provide Christmas gifts to people in need. “As business owners, we feel we owe it to — not only the customers who come support us — but also the community,” Jeremy said. Seven years ago, they started Dying for a Cause. It has since raised and given away more than $15,000 in Christmas presents. Chasin’ the Chains 53
Jeremy said. “Now we raise around $2,500 and help a dozen families each year.” Jeremy and Leslie try to provide both the basic necessities and items that are just for fun. “Typically, we will spend around $100 per person on staple items like hats, gloves, pants, shoes, coats, but also a ‘Wow’ item like a bike or a toy,” Jeremy said. “We know the people we are buying for don’t get a chance for a fun gift, so we like to provide one.” After gifts are purchased, any additional money goes to buy gift cards. They give those to the church to pass out to families who need extra help. Bauer has been impressed with the program. “It’s always a surprise when someone wants to help on a very generous scale in the community, and especially knowing it’s going to go somewhere 54 WWW.CHASINTHECHAINSMAGAZINE.COM
to do some good,” she said. “We greatly appreciate their generosity.” Jeremy has also worked to demonstrate transparency with the program by photographing and posting online all the gifts purchased each year with the money. “We want people to see what their money went for, and it’s important to us that they feel included,” he said. Being able to provide gifts is fun, but Jeremy has also enjoyed seeing the dyed discs that people create. “People will do all sorts of dyes — spin dyes, abstract, paint by numbers,” he said. “Dying is hard to do it right, but anyone can do it.” After the discs are displayed and voted on, they are auctioned off on eBay. EBay has allowed people from across the country to see and bid on the discs.
Last year, the top selling disc was a “Snoopy” design, which brought in $225. Jeremy joked that because of his mother, there has never been a disc that didn’t sell. For people who provided a dyed disc, he has tried to make this a win-win for everyone. “If you send a disc, you receive a disc back of your choice, any brand,” he said. “You won’t have any outof-pocket expense except the cost to mail me a disc.” The favorite disc designs winners will receive 2 - 3 discs of their choice, with the winner getting to choose five. Every year, Jeremy and Leslie work to keep increasing the money raised. They like the fact that the donated funds come from the disc golf community. Jeremy hopes other disc golfers will find a charitable cause to help in their communities for one simple fact: “It feels good to make a difference.” n Chasin’ the Chains 55

It’s not uncommon to find disc golf inspired beers, but Twin Rivers Winery and Gourmet Shoppe is prepared to offer something different. »

t the 2018 Glass Blown Open, the Emporia, Kansas, business unveiled a new disc golf inspired wine called Throwing Glass. “Since the Glass Blown Open is one of the major events for Emporia, it just made sense to have a wine for it,” Twin Rivers owner Justin Ogleby said. “Most of our wines are named for something that has to do with Emporia or the region.” Unlike beer that can be created over a couple of weeks, the winemaking process takes a much longer planning process. “We came up with the concept last year,” Ogleby said “We get all our grapes and juice in the fall, so that has to supply us for the entire year. So, we have to plan out what wines we are going to make that year and then set aside the grapes and juice for that.” In September, Ogleby began the winemaking process — crushing the grapes, fermentation of the juices and building the aromas and flavors. 60 WWW.CHASINTHECHAINSMAGAZINE.COM
In September, Ogleby began the winemaking process — crushing the grapes, fermentation of the juices and building the aromas and flavors. A white wine takes 4 - 6 months for the sweeter wines, while red wines can take 12 - 24 months. Ogleby knew he would have his work cut out for him making a wine disc golfers might like. “Everybody has their own pallett — everyone has their own tastes — so we try to make our wines for all of those tastes,” Ogleby said. “We thought that since most disc golfers weren’t into wine, we wanted to do something sweet. So we are going to be releasing a white blend that is really sweet and really fruity, lots of floral notes. I think they will enjoy it.” Twin Rivers — which has been making wine for two years — produced

and bottled 70 gallons of Throwing Glass. Just as the wine is a unique creation, so is the label on the bottle. All Twin Rivers labels are done by local artists in the Emporia area. The Throwing Glass label was done by Joel Smith of Maud’s Tattoo. It was based off of the old tattoo styles. “It has a sunflower with some chains to represent the basket,” Ogleby said. “All our logos have a circle at the top, and we replaced that with a disc. So, it looks like a broken disc made of glass.” While the wine and label are unique, Ogleby hopes it will be enjoyed by disc golfers. “I enjoy the creativity and making something that is tangible for people to enjoy,” he said. “It’s almost like a cross between science
and art and coming up with the perfect wine, then getting it on the market and seeing people actually enjoying it. “The wine is not meant to be put on a shelf, but to be drank. Then,
you can put the empty bottle on the shelf and keep that.” To purchase the wine, call 620208-9463, online at twinriverswine. com or visit the store location at 627 Commercial St. n

GBO players, volunteers, and fans, The 2018 Glass Blown Open is just the start of a busy disc golf schedule in Emporia this year!
The Last
PUTT
After playing host to more than 1,600 players during GBO week, our focus will quickly switch to the first United States Amateur Match Play Championships (USAMPC) to be held at Jones and Peter Pan Parks on June 22-24. Thousands of players are competing in local 16-player brackets throughout the United States and Canada. In May, all of the winners will be competing for their respective state and province championship brackets. The winners of the state and province brackets will be arriving in Emporia for the final bracket of the USAMPC. A champion will be crowned, who will win 18 Veteran baskets and tee signs and discs for life! We will turn around and do the same thing over again, but for doubles teams starting in July and ending in September. A week before the USAMPC singles finals, more than 500 players will be playing disc golf in Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City for our fifth installment of the Stadium Experience. I am really excited to hear the participants’ names announced over the stadium sound system as they throw their first shots on the 9-hole stadium course! Rumor has it that discs in the stadium fly straight as arrows‌ July will bring what we expect to be hundreds of junior disc golfers and their families to Emporia for the 2018 PDGA Junior World Disc Golf Championships. The city of Emporia has been working hard with our team at Dynamic Discs to make this event a very special experience for the kids who come out and compete for world titles. I fully expect a future GBO champion to reminisce on a junior title won on the same courses as they accept their Glass Blown Open trophy sometime down the road! Several factors went into the decision to have the MPO field play all three rounds of the GBO at the Country Club this year. While the benefits of having these players stay out at the club all week outweigh the downsides, it is still obvious that the decision has resulted in the rest of the participants not having a chance to play this great and challenging course. To remedy this, we are hosting the first Country Club Challenge on September 15 and 16. Two tee-time rounds that weekend will help us crown the CCC champs for the first of what we hope is many times in the future. Emporia will also play host to the Dynamic Discs Open in October and the Freedom Fest in November, along with a few Next Generation Tour events, a Trilogy Challenge or two, and several other smaller, local disc golf events. The future of disc golf in Emporia continues to be bright. A few of our elementary schools will run events, the middle school will continue to maintain its 18-hole course, the Emporia High School Disc Golf Club is growing, and Emporia State University is making additional commitments to their disc golf club and the team that competes in the National Collegiate Championships each year. If you have been to Emporia to experience our exciting disc golf scene, thanks for coming. If you have not yet visited Emporia, we look forward to seeing you soon! n
