FROM THE DIRECTOR The old saying “The more things change, the more they stay the same” is an adage we all have heard, and likely one you have even expressed yourself on occasion. It is indeed true, and possibly never more so than with Dirty Kanza. Looking back on our event’s humble beginnings, the focus of Dirty Kanza has always been on providing each participant with a life-enriching cycling experience; on celebrating an active outdoor lifestyle; and on building community. Last September we announced the largest change in the history of Dirty Kanza Promotions… our acquisition by Life Time. The news was seen by some as the end of Dirty Kanza as they knew it. Most, however, recognized this change for what it truly is… the alignment of two amazing brands who share one common philosophy. As the newest member of the Life Time family, Dirty Kanza is now stronger and better equipped than ever to continue down the same road we have been traveling since our beginning in 2006. Moving forward, Dirty Kanza and Life Time will continue to serve the gravel cycling community by providing amazing cycling experiences and celebrating a healthy way of life. On behalf of the entire Life Time Team … Thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

ROAD — T O —
GRAVEL BY MELISSA LOWERY
Earlier this year, EF Education First Pro Cycling and Floyd’s Pro Cycling, road racing pro teams, announced they would send riders to compete in the Dirty Kanza 200, the world’s premier gravel race. The news immediately set the gravel grinding world abuzz with many wary of how an influx of pro riders would affect their sport. The debate and discussion was such that Joe Lindsay of Outside magazine even published an article in January titled “No, Pros Won’t Ruin Gravel Racing.” Indeed, their presence is a testament to the rapid rise of gravel racing, he argues.

“Just because you’ve read a lot of books doesn’t make you a great author. You can ride down dirt roads all day, but it’s not the same as racing.”
[GRUBER IMAGES/ASHELY GRUBER, JERED GRUBER]
“It’s also important to note that the pro presence is an effect, not a cause, of gravel racing’s sharp rise in interest,” Lindsay writes. Much of the concern seems to be that introducing more pro road racers to gravel racing will change the culture of what’s seen as a grassroots sport. Fear not, Lindsay reassures the gravel grinders, it’s exactly that grassroots feel that appeals to the roadies. Without a direct prize purse – instead the DK donates significantly to local nonprofits – the experience itself is the reward for most riders, including the pros. Lachlan Morton, an Australian member of the EF Education First Pro Cycling team and avid bike-packer, will ride the DK200 for the first time this year. He has been wanting to race the DK for a few years, intrigued by what he’s heard about it from others. “The DK is one of those events that’s popped up on my radar and each year I think I’d like to go and do that, but it’s always fallen right in the middle of the season when I’d be in Europe,” he said,
14 | DK MAGAZINE 2019
speaking via Skype from Girona, Spain. “On paper, it sounds like exactly the sort of thing I’d be into, so I’m excited to experience it and discover a new event.”
EMBRACING THE DK CULTURE
For Morton and his EF Education First teammates, a main draw of gravel grinding is the unpredictable nature of the sport. He hopes that riding the DK will add adventure and exploration to what he sees as an increasingly “sterile” elite sport. “In my opinion, pro cycling is pushing away from what the everyday recreation cyclist is doing,” Morton said. “It’s become ultra pro, very sterile, a numbers game — it’s a long way from the people who are getting out there to ride their bikes and explore, the sort of people who are going to be out racing the DK.” He’s not the only pro racer longing for something reminiscent of racing around on mountain bikes as a child, enjoying the freedom found on two wheels. Scott McFarlane, General Manager of Floyd’s Pro Cycling, said team sponsor, Floyd
Landis, encouraged McFarlane to seek alternative races for his riders to recapture the fun of cycling. “When Floyd agreed to sponsor the team, he said he wanted the team to have fun,” McFarlane said. “He said it very seriously in the sense that he didn’t feel the team would reflect him well if it was hyper-focused on road performance. He feels that can create an unhealthy environment. Some of the best times he’s had on a bike were when he was first doing mountain biking, and he wanted the team to recapture that feeling.” McFarlane shared those thoughts with his riders and many expressed similar sentiments. So the search was on for alternative racing options. Both the EF Education First and Floyd’s teams chose the DK based on the event’s reputation as a challenging race and an overall enjoyable experience. McFarlane said his riders are looking forward to interacting with fans and riders of all calibers, rather than being sequestered with the team in an RV or prep area.
“The unscriptedness and that broader participatory culture that’s being cultivated is where the adventure is coming in. We’ve heard a lot about the community involvement and the culture of the DK,” McFarlane said. “Riders who have done the DK say the energy is just unbelievable. We’re looking forward to the festival component, what’s going on in the community as opposed to watching a race on TV that happens on an iconic mountaintop.”
PREPARING FOR THE UNEXPECTED
[GRUBER IMAGES/ASHELY GRUBER, JERED GRUBER]
Both Morton and McFarlane expressed that they aren’t coming to the DK with the intent to “dominate” or change the culture in any way, but rather to embrace and experience what already exists. Pro racers are generally more physically prepared for the DK, but the very unpredictability of the race that appeals to them could level the field considerably. Morton has logged hundreds of miles cycling on dirt roads at home in Australia and on adventure tours elsewhere. That doesn’t mean he has an edge, however. “I would like to think it helps, but I really doubt it,” he says. “Just because you’ve read a lot of books doesn’t make you a great author. You can ride down dirt roads all day, but it’s not the same as racing.” Morton also noted his dirt riding experience has been more about exploring new places than speeding over rough terrain. Riding 200 miles in one day is a challenge he’s excited to attempt. The DK will be his first adventure race, his first endurance race, and the first race where he may need to rely on his own mechanical skills since riders are not allowed assistance between checkpoints. He’s excited about that, too. “By the sound of it, there’s a lot of mechanical issues that can come up,” Morton said. “As a pro rider, you have the luxury of saying, ‘My bike doesn’t work, give me another one.’ I can anticipate a moment when the bike breaks and it’s up to me to fix it. I like the feeling of being a little out of my depth and rising to the challenge.” Come June 1, the DK will welcome racers of all calibers seeking a challenge.

CBD and Cycling:
My First-Hand Experiences
BY DAVE ZABRISKIE , FLOYD’S OF LEADVILLE [COURTESY PHOTOS]
For me, cycling was not only an athletic endeavor but also a career for many years. I raced as a professional for some of the sport’s top teams, winning multiple US National Time Trial Championships and a stage of the Tour de France among other highlights. But since retiring, like everyone here in Emporia lining up for the Garmin Dirty Kanza, I found gravel (or maybe it found me). Now I ride for the fun of it, to stay healthy, and when rolling with my friend Ryan Steers, who is tackling the 200 for a second year, to get in a workout (whether I want to or not). As I’ve gotten older, the years of training and racing are becoming more apparent. These days my body craves assistance after hard rides, which is why I began using CBD products as a daily supplement to combat inflammation and aid in recovery. As a rider who was dialed into the smallest performance details, the analytical side of me wanted to know the science behind CBD.
18 | DK MAGAZINE 2019
WHAT IS CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most abundant of the more than 100 naturally occurring cannabinoids found in hemp plants. CBD has shown to interact with the human body through our endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for regulating an array of physiological functions in an effort to maintain homeostasis. One of the many amazing benefits of CBD is it can be enjoyed without the side effects that come from THC, which is the psychoactive substance extracted from the cannabis plant. Mounting evidence shows CBD can promote recovery and is effective in managing inflammation post-exercise. Additionally, cannabinoids and hemp oil can reduce muscle strain and dehydration from training. CBD has shown to have anti-anxiety properties, and a wide range of benefits are still being uncovered.
THE SCIENCE OF CBD
The human body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that helps regulate functions such as sleep, immunesystem responses, and pain. In a study posted to the medical journal Neurotherapeutics, CBD activates or inhibits other compounds in the endocannabinoid system which include pain. One way It does this is by stopping the body from absorbing anandamide, a compound associated with regulating pain. Additionally, a study by the Laboratory for Integrative Neuroscience at the National Institutes of Health showed that CBD, “has significant anti-inflammatory properties and the ability to suppress inflammatory responses by targeting certain receptors.”
WHAT ARE OTHER BENEFITS OF HEMP OIL, FROM WHICH CBD IS MADE? Hemp seeds are rich in protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega 6, omega 3 and insoluble fiber, which can help to increase immunity, counteract aging skin and improve cardiovascular health. They’re also packed with minerals.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FULL-SPECTRUM AND ISOLATE?
Full Spectrum products provide — in addition to the active plant CBD compound — a synergistic effect that supplements and enhances the benefits of CBD. The enhanced benefit has been so widely recognized it has been given its own name — the “Entourage Effect.” Isolate is 100 percent THC-free and is advisable for people who do not want any THC or in a job that requires drug testing.
CBD AS PAIN RELIEF
Before discovering CBD, I used to reach for Ibuprofen to reduce the pain from a hard effort. Many people don’t realize there is an increased risk of gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeds, heart attack and kidney disease from repeatedly taking NSAIDs. In contrast, studies are showing that CBD reduces pain and doses of up to 1,500 mg/day are reportedly well tolerated. CBD has no known negative consequences on a person’s health.
WHY FLOYD’S OF LEADVILLE?
Floyd’s makes an array of CBD products for athletes and active lifestyles including SoftGels, Tinctures, Balms, Hydration and Protein Recovery Mixes, and gummie-style Gems. Our high-quality, non-GMO hemp CBD is grown and manufactured in Colorado, with certified lab test results available on our website for all products. Next time you pack up to hit the gravel, consider adding CBD into the mix. More and more athletes are adding it to their toolbox to help fight inflammation, aches and pains, like those after a long day in the saddle.

RIDER GEAR GUIDE
YURI HAUSWALD
Each year of the Garmin Dirty Kanza is different. Weather conditions play a huge role and can make times on the course fast, or slow. 2015 has been dubbed “Year of the Mud” and is also the year that the finish came down to a sprint, with Yuri Hauswald crossing first. He’s been a consistent 200-mile finisher, and last year he finished the inaugural DKXL in second place. He shares his Dirty Kanza gear and nutrition tips.
BIKE:
I ride a NINER RLT 9 RDO, a carbon gravel bike. NINER’s Carbon Compaction process makes this frame 10 percent lighter without being flexy in the wrong places, and it delivers performance and comfort all day long, which makes it perfect for the bumpy/rough gravel roads of the Flint Hills of Kansas.
NUTRITION:
It should be noted that I’ve been a GU athlete for over 13 years, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that their Roctane Ultra line of products, specifically Roctane Gels, Roctane Energy Drink and Roctane BCCA Capsules, are the cornerstone of my nutrition plan for a long day in the prairie. When doing an event like Dirty Kanza, where I will be on my bike from 12 to 13 hours, I try to consume 200 to 250 calories per hour in liquid, gel and solid. My favorite Roctane Gel flavor is Sea Salt Chocolate, and my drink mix flavor of choice is Lemon Berry. One of the great things, about the Roctane Energy Drink Mix is that you can get a FULL hours worth of calories in one bottle and it’s easy for your body to digest.
24 | DK MAGAZINE 2019
HYDRATION PACK:
CamelBak Chase Vest: I don’t go anywhere on the prairie without my Camelbak Chase Vest because it allows 50 ounces of handsfree hydration and has chest strap stowage, which allows me to easily access my GU nutrition.
COMPUTER:
Garmin Edge 1030. With an event like Dirty Kanza, where there are NO course markings, navigation is CRUCIAL to your success, which is why I rely on my Garmin Edge 1030. With near 20 hours of battery life, a 3.5-inch big screen, amazing mapping features, and all the metrics you could possibly hope for, the 1030 has gotten me through some pretty tough Dirty Kanza miles. For last year’s DKXL, I used the 1030 paired with the Garmin Charge battery pack, which gave me an extra 20 hours of battery life, which, thankfully, I didn’t need.
TIRES:
WTB Nano 40: While there’s NO tire that’s impervious to the sharp gravel of the Flint Hills, my WTB Nano 40s have gotten me through a DK 200, and the DKXL, without a flat. Now that’s saying something. It’s a tough, fast rolling tire, that can take a beating. It’s safe to say that this will be the rubber on my bike when I toe the line in 2019.
RIDER GEAR GUIDE
REBECCA
RUSCH Doing a long ride like the DKXL is a pretty big undertaking not only because of the massive distance, but also the unsupported nature of the ride. Success depends on planning, controlling the controllables and dialing in your gear. Just like putting in your training time for your legs, putting in time planning your gear will pay dividends on ride day. It’s not always the fastest legs that do well in ultra endurance events. Efficiency, smarts and equipment management are part of the equation, too. Being self-supported means you carry everything you need on your bike and body and resupply at public places along the way. This takes planning and a roll of the dice to decide what to take and what to leave at home. Here are a few of the items I took on the 2018 DKXL to finish first female and third overall. Hopefully these tips will help you on your next backpacking adventure, no matter where it might be.
BIKE SET UP
• BIKE: Niner RLT9 RDO. The “RLT” means “Road Less Traveled” so this bike was literally made for heading into the unknown, off the beaten path and toward adventure • WHEELS: ENVE G23 700c Gravel Series Wheels • Maxxis Rambler Tires, 700x40c EXO/TR • SRAM Quarq power meter • SRAM Chainring and Cassette 42t Front, 10x42t rear - I went down in chainring size for this event. I normally ride a 44 tooth and went down to a 42. I was really glad I made the change for an event this long. • SADDLE: Wilderness Trail Bikes Koda saddle • FRAME BAGS: your key to freedom and adventure on a bike! Frame bags have opened up a whole new world for cyclists. Instead of having heavy gear on your back, you can now load gear onto the bike, which means you can go further and more comfortably. With efficiency in mind, I try to set up the bike so the things I need the most while riding are accessible without stopping. There is logic and planning to what goes in each location. The back saddle bag is where I keep tools, mechanical stuff (the things I hope I won’t ever have to use) wrapped neatly in a Camelbak bike tool organizer roll. This includes a chain-link, extra brake pads, tire plugs, tire boots, duct tape, zip ties, extra pedal cleats. Heavier items like batteries, water, tubes, I use the Revelate Tangle Frame bag. I like to keep the heavier items in the main triangle of the bike. The Revelate Gas Tank bag sits in the perfect spot on the top tube for my snacks and nutrition while in the saddle, like the GU Roctane, GU chews, BCAA tablets and electrolyte capsules. I use the Revelate Mountain Feedbag for all of my technology, like phone, cords for charging, GoPro batteries.
TECHNOLOGY
Sinewave Cycles Dynamo Hub - A key to the event is being able to charge your devices. I run the hub on my ENVE wheel and every stroke powers my USB port that is in my Revelate Mountain Feedbag. I need to make sure all of my essentials, like my Garmin 1030, phone, and lights, are able to stay charged. Using a generator hub allows me to minimize battery weight on a long ride. The only hitch is, you have to keep pedaling to stay powered.
NUTRITION
I burned 10,895 calories over the 28:28:25 hours. Yuri Hauswald has a great article on nutrition in this magazine and he and I follow many of the same principles, so I won’t repeat them all here. Some basics that I plan for are 25 oz of water and about 150 calories per hour. I started the ride with my normal GU nutrition, but since you can’t carry enough food and fluid for the entire event, you have to rely on what you can find at convenience stores along the way. You can always find Red Bull there, but sometimes the other offerings aren’t that great and you’re forced to choose between the lesser of two evils...the hot dog warming under the lights or the bag of gummy bears. I tried to find the best nutrition possible there, but I also carried six packets of Roctane drink mix to have at least one reliable source of calories for much of the ride.

RIDER GEAR GUIDE
COLIN STRICKLAND
Colin Strickland is a rider who will be competing in DK200 for the first time in 2019, but he is no stranger to endurance gravel racing. He has finished first at the 150-mile Gravel Worlds race for the last two years, fifth at Belgian Waffle Ride 2018, first at two USA Crit Series events in 2018, and has four Red Hook Crit Victories to his name. Colin is an all-rounder with a varied skill set who could very well be a factor late in the DK200 2019 race, no matter the competition.
WHEELSET:
ENVE G23 / Chris King R45D hubs. The G23 rims are light, strong and offer blunt sidewall edge for added pinch flat resistance. Enve has designed these wheels specifically for the varied and often violent demands of American gravel racing, and it shows. Whether it is the rugged course that’s threatening, or an attack from former world-tour riders, G23 is here to help me cope.
FRAME:
My Team, Meteor X Giordana, will be racing DK200 2019 on the new Allied Cycleworks ABLE, which is a 100 percent made in USA carbon frameset. This frame features a very tight rear end to retail agility for navigating single track and sketchy rutted roads, while the front end is lengthened slightly for better stability on loose dirt at high speed. The ABLE is designed to slice, but also to dice.
APPAREL:
This is often an overlooked part of the ensemble, but as a professional cyclist will confirm, apparel choice can make or break the experience on a bike, especially if that experience is 200 miles long, and likely in the heat and wind. I will be wearing the Doppio FR-C half-zip speed suit by Giordana, which offers performance of a speedsuit without the fuss. The Doppio is not only more comfortable than traditional bib/
26 | DK MAGAZINE 2019
jersey combo by eliminating the straps, but it also offers a significant aero advantage by streamlining the sides of the torso/hips and is equipped with three rear pockets. Plus, we love the chance to express a bit of style with Giordana’s design collaborations.
GROUPSET:
My team is very fortunate to partner with Shimano officially in 2019! My gravel bike is equipped with full Ultegra Di2 groupsets , which includes the Ultegra RX clutch derailleur. My gearing is 50/34 chainrings, and 1134t cassette. The reliability of Shimano’s components makes them the obvious choice for a race like DK200 that throws everything at you.
COMPONENTRY:
My bike is outfitted with ENVE aero handlebars, 4-bolt Road stem, and seat posts. I have been partnering with ENVE since 2017, and I have put their components through Hell. Through it all, they have maintained complete reliability. I also have partnered with Specialized for helmets, shoes, saddles and tires. I run the Romin evo saddle, S-Works Recon mtb shoes, Pathfinder Pro 42c tires, and S-Works Evade with Custom RedBull graphics from AirTrix. Dirty Kanza was the first gravel race I saw images of that I said, “I want to try that!” In Wisconsin we can train for hills, mud and water crossings. What I was not prepared for was the exposure and wind….we just don’t have that here. The experience was literally life-changing for me as, ultimately, I ended my race at mile 67 in a ditch. I came home from Kansas with an entirely different outlook on what I wanted out of cycling and my life. This year I am returning 70 pounds lighter, have 6,000 more miles on my Salsa Cutthroat, and a 100 percent different outlook on life! The DNF was the rocket fuel I used to change my life. This year, is another new experience as all four family members are riding the DK100. Please say hello and I hope your race this year is as meaningful as mine was last year.
BIKE:
Salsa Cutthroat Force 1. My Salsa Cutthroat is the go-to bike for any adventure. With an event like Dirty Kanza, I know that my bike is safe, nimble and gives me confidence to go over any feature encountered. Image attached
LIGHTING AND WHEELS:
My lighting system consists of a Klite USA Bikepacker Ultra and a Velocity USA Blunt SS wheel set with dynamo hub. This combination has been the biggest upgrade I have made to date to my bike. I no longer worry about being without light on any ride. I also have the ability to charge my electronics as I safely ride. Images attached
COMPUTER:
Garmin Edge 1000. Being able to depend upon my computer is very crucial for me at an event. Especially one like Dirty Kanza that is not marked. I have asthma and being able to have a large screen showing me my heart rate at all times is critical. Having 10 hours of battery life, combined with the dynamo hub, means I will not run out of battery life. Garmin has been my go-to brand for bike computers and will continue to be.

A different kind of
grit Cycling has always been a boys club, with men dominating the field. The Dirty Kanza was no exception — but over the last few years, that’s all started to change. “Back in 2016, we really wanted to increase the women’s participation in the Dirty Kanza,”
DK Marketing Manager Kristi Mohn said. “We created this campaign, the concept being getting 200 women to the starting line of the Dirty Kanza, which would put us at 20 percent female participation.” It was a tall order, Mohn said, since women had historically accounted for 7 - 9 percent of the overall participants for the race, but she knew it could be done. It might take a few years, but they’d get there.

“We can ride our bikes around the world as women. We’re doing something substantial and women are here to ride bikes. That’s something people need to realize. At the front of the pack? Women are going to be there.”

“Really, the concept was to try to just invite women, give them space, make sure they felt welcome and encourage them to grab a friend and come to the start line of Dirty Kanza to participate,” she said. “When we set up the initial concept, we thought it would take us three years. The guys on the team kind of thought it would take us three years to reach that goal of 200 women at the start line.” It didn’t. The women’s spots sold out within three hours. “It was completely full,” Mohn said of the race. “But the women’s spots — we were planning on if it didn’t sell out within two to three weeks — we were going to open those back to the general public. And the guys really thought that we’d have some spots available because we wouldn’t get to that 200 mark. We reached the 200 mark for women in three hours. It didn’t take three years — it took three hours.” Since then, Mohn said more and more women have been emboldened to take the leap into the DK. “We’ve continued with the 200 women 200 miles campaign and this is year no. 3,” she said. “We’ve seen a huge growth across the distances in female participation to where the 25-mile event actually has around 55 percent women signed up for that, so it’s actually a majority. And across all distances, I think it sits around 33 percent or something, which is actually a really good number in our industry for women.” In a sport that’s been traditionally maledominated, that’s a pretty big deal. But for Mohn, it’s more about encouraging other women to join in the

sport without feeling ashamed about their skill levels. And now, the campaign has evolved. “We’re switching the concept this year to ‘Women Ride The World,’” Mohn said. “That concept really kind of came out of the women that I ride with locally and us setting a challenge in our group for 2019 to commit to riding 26,000 miles collectively for the year, and with that realization that that’s riding around the world, plus.” Mohn said she realized that her position within the DK and Life Time gave her the opportunity to meet women where they are in their lives; to encourage them to find a friend, to find an event, to find a camp; and motivate them to get fit, get healthy and find space in the cycling world. “There’s really two main things that prevent women from doing things like this,” Mohn said. “The first one is support, meaning other people to ride with, support at home to get the time and space to go ride your bike. Then the second one is really that financial piece of it, because cycling is not an inexpensive sport. It’s an expensive sport.” Mohn hopes that by opening up different avenues for women, they can help alleviate those stressors that make it difficult to get started. “We really hope that with this campaign — with the turn of the campaign and opening it bigger — we can then raise some money to help women with entry fees to events or gear for cycling, whatever that might be,” she said. “We’re hoping that we can take and leverage the 200 women, 200 miles and what we’ve

got going in the industry to make it bigger and better and even more encompassing for women.” It’s something that Mohn’s friend and fellow gravel grinder Tina Khan understands well. “We can ride our bikes around the world as women,” she said. “We’re doing something substantial and women are here to ride bikes. That’s something people need to realize. At the front of the pack? Women are going to be there.” And in the last few years, they have been riding the same gritty paths as the men. Through menopause, menstrual cycles, discomfort — they aren’t afraid to get down and dirty on the course. “It’s a different type of grit for women,” Khan said. “It takes other women to be a part of this, because it’s very “It’s a different type intimidating to a woman to see a field of men. You’re of grit for women. It unsure of the mechanics, you’re unsure of all of it. takes other women There are so many things to be a part of this, — your bike, yourself, your nutrition — and you hear all because it’s very of these guys and they are talking and you immediately intimidating to a feel like you are not part of that. It’s so external. It really woman to see a field of takes another woman to say, men. You’re unsure of ‘Come on, let’s go on a bike race.’” the mechanics, you’re But it’s not just physical factors that can be daunting unsure of all of it.” for women to face on these long, endurance races. Every rider has a unique story for why they ride. “When you watch the DK start and there’s 2,000 riders down the street, every single one of them has a story,” Khan said. “You can never underestimate the value of their ‘why.’ This goes across all genders, but I really want to challenge women with this: Walk up to a cyclist and ask them why they ride. You have to get that story. There’s a reason why each and every one of them is riding. Talking about why they ride is what makes this happen.” Sometimes it can just be difficult for women to take that time for themselves. After years of trying to manage a career with being a wife and a mother, Mohn finally had to make a choice to take care of herself. That’s when she started scheduling times for her rides. “You totally deserve that hour and a half out of your week,” she said. “Anybody that I’ve run into, I tell them to set yourself appointments. Look at your calendar, pick three or four hours that you’re going to commit to yourself and put them on the calendar and don’t let anybody touch them — including yourself. As women we have so many roles that it can be really hard to take that time for ourselves. We’re wives, mothers, we work. There are so many — we’re being pulled in so many different directions and it can feel a little overwhelming to try to break into.” Overwhelming, but not impossible with the right support. “The way to take ownership of this, as women, is don’t be afraid to find another woman who rides and ask her a tough question about riding,” Khan said. “Just do it. Don’t ask her how fast she goes, don’t ask her how often she rides. Don’t be afraid to go, ‘Oh, you ride, right?’ It doesn’t matter if you ride 50 miles or you ride 350, just go and ask her how long her lady parts hurt. Really, women will have that conversation with you. It will generate this family of women. We are a tribe.”

Leader OF THE

Like many teens, Will Shultz has a lot going on between high school classes, sports and spending time with his friends. But there’s something that sets Shultz apart from his peers.

The returning champion of the Dirty Kanza High School event, Shultz spends much of his free time as part of the Kansas High School Cycling League Development Board, where he’s paving the way for future generations of cyclists in the state. “Last year, about two weeks after the DK, Lelan Dains created a Facebook event that was going to be like a town hall type thing in Lawrence and he had mentioned to me that he wanted us to start up a league for a while,” Shultz said. “He had some people volunteer to be on this committee when we were at that meeting at Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop, and I got a text about two to three weeks later from a guy from Lawrence who was on the board and he was like, ‘We think that if we had a high school kid on this, it would be a really good insight on what’s going on in school and things like that.’” Now, the board is closer than ever to seeing a KSHS Cycling League come to fruition. “It’s really exciting,” Shultz, who is a junior at Free State High School in Lawrence, said. “I don’t think the first season will be when I’m in high school, but I’m sure wherever I go to college, whether that be in Kansas or Colorado, Arkansas or wherever I go, I’m going to be helping out as much as I can with any cycling organization that I can find.” With that kind of enthusiasm, it’s kind of surprising that Shultz is relatively new to the world of cycling and gravel grinding. While he rode bikes around with his friends when he was younger, he said it wasn’t until about five years ago that he really fell in love with cycling. “I never really considered it was something that I would go out and do on purpose,” he said. “You know, it was always something where it’s just hanging out with your buddies and you’d go and ride around and jump off of curbs and do stuff like that. I rode a little bit after that, but I didn’t really get into seriously training until about a year and a half ago, and that’s when I really started focusing on the racing side of it. That’s when I was really spending a whole lot of time on it.” Still, something changed. Shultz went to Sunflower and asked for a job, but being 14 he was told he was too young and to come back in a couple of years. So, he kept on riding and completed some races. It was a learning experience, he said, starting off on 10- or 11-mile rides and finding out that he wasn’t wellequipped with water or supplies. It could have been an experience that made him turn away from cycling altogether, but Shultz wanted to push himself to be the best rider he could be. “I had some kind of a realization that I just needed to start training if I wanted to start winning races and stuff like that,” he said. “I kind of consider myself a competitive person that likes a challenge. I’ve always just wanted to kind of progress and see what I can push myself to do and just have a good time with the people out on the course. But, yeah, I kind of realized that all the fast guys weren’t just out riding bikes. They were riding the road and they

Cycling SCHOOL BY MELISSA LOWERY
Olympian Mike Friedman helps kids gain confidence on the bike
[COURTESY PHOTO]
Mike Friedman, founder of Pedaling Minds and Olympic cyclist, recalls the first time he helped a child learn to ride a bike. It was at his father’s bike shop as Friedman was preparing for one of his final races before retiring from a successful road racing career. 42 | DK MAGAZINE 2019
“There was this kid who came in with his grandfather,” Friedman recalls. “The kid was 11 years old and being bullied in school because he couldn’t ride a bike. My dad told the grandfather that I would teach the grandson how to ride a bike. I’d never taught anyone before, but of course I knew how to ride a bike so we went step-by-step and in an hour and half, he had the basics down. He could pedal, brake, was wearing a helmet. And it changed this kid’s life.”
This experience stuck with Friedman, who was searching for a calling following his professional racing career. The youngest person to win a USA Cycling U23 road race national title at the age of 18 and winner of multiple national titles and World Cup medals, Friedman’s passion was still cycling, but now he had a new focus: helping kids gain confidence on their bikes and opening up a whole new world of experiences. “I began riding at age 5 and racing at age 10,” he said. “Riding a bicycle changed my life. To be able to share that with other people, to teach kids how to look at a bicycle as something they could do forever, to be something fun they could do for a lifetime is just...it’s so rewarding.” Pedaling Minds is partnering with Dirty Kanza for the first time to bring Friedman’s unique youth cycling clinic to Emporia. The Kid’s Riding and Skills Clinic is a four-hour program geared toward children ages 5-11 who want to improve their biking skills. ability so that they gain greater control as cyclists. Children work on these skills in a safe, supportive, fun environment by doing skill-drills courses and hands-on activities with world-class cyclists as instructors. “I think we bring a different skillset and a different kind of biking lessons to the community of Emporia as well as to the people bringing kids to the event from out of town,” Friedman says. “Our instructors are people like Tour de France rider Danny Pate and pro-racer Lachlan Morton. I think it adds a lot of credibility to have athletes of this caliber come in and talk to the kids about safety and how to handle the bike and how to get up and keep going.” One area of instruction included in all of Friedman’s clinics is helmet safety, but Pedaling Minds goes beyond the basics to teach kids how to better control the bike and ride with confidence. “Our number one focus is on learning to control the bike,” Friedman said. “A helmet protects in the event of a crash, but control prevents the crash from happening in the first place. In a four-hour period, we can

immediately make someone safer, better and more confident, and have fun doing it.” The clinic is designed for all riding levels regardless of age. Following an abilities assessment, each child is placed in the appropriate group. Riders are then guided through level-appropriate exercises and demonstrations such as using front wheel brakes, checking their surroundings without losing control of the bike and riding one-handed with stability to enable signaling. “We’re working on skills they need every day,” Friedman said. “It’s not about racing or jumping, that comes later. It’s about the enjoyment of getting out and riding your bike.” Because the clinic is necessarily shortened, the Pedaling Minds team teaches using methods that give children ownership over their skills and the confidence to continue practicing and improving on their own. “We know “Our number one developing control focus is on learning over their bikes to control the bike. takes time, so in these clinics we A helmet protects practice specific in the event of a drills and skills crash, but control to help each child understand areas prevents the crash they need to work on from happening in while also gaining the first place. More than 800 children have completed the program in the Rocky Mountain State, a number Friedman said reflects 100 percent completion. “We’ve not lost one kid,” he said. “Kids and parents both respond really well to our methods.” Presenting the clinics during the DK is part of a pilot program which Friedman hopes will lead to establishing Pedaling Minds camps and clinics across the country. But first, he’s focused on delivering an outstanding experience in Emporia. “I’m excited to be coming to the DK and working with a venue and a race that’s not the standard of what I come from,” Friedman said. “Nailing this event and making it first-in-class for the kids, for the organization, is the most important thing.” Pedaling Minds will offer four clinics in Emporia during the week leading up to the Dirty Kanza.
