Now I’m in a position to partner with the Davis-Moore Auto Group to buy the dealership and continue giving back to the community that I grew up in. This is where I’m from. Newman Regional Health was one of 16 Kansas hospitals cited for its excellence in maternity care in January 2018. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas designated 16 of its contracting hospitals as Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care as part of the national Blue Distinction Specialty Care program that recognized hospitals for providing quality and affordable care. Blue Distinction Centers are nationals designated hospitals that show expertise in delivering improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community. The Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on quality measures for vaginal and cesarean delivery. To receive a Blue Distinction Centers+ designation, a hospital must meet the same quality criteria as Blue Distinction Centers while also meeting requirements for cost efficiency. Nearly four million babies are born in the U.S. annually, making childbirth the most common cause of hospitalization, and cesarean sections the most common operating room procedure, according to National Centers for Health Statistics and the Agency for Health Care Research & Quality. Reducing early elective delivery is an area of focus for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Pediatrics. According to Health Affairs, elective inductions result in more cesarean deliveries and a longer maternal hospitalization. Since 2006, the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program has helped patients find quality specialty care in the areas of bariatric surgery, cancer care, cardiac care, maternity care, knee and hip replacements, spine surgery and transplants, while encouraging health care professionals to improve the care they deliver. Research shows that, compared to other hospitals, those designated as Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients. On average, Blue Distinction Centers+ also are 20 percent more cost-efficient than non-Blue Distinction Center+ designated hospitals.

Business is always good Being strategically located along the intersection of I-35 and I-335 and U.S. Highway 50, Emporia is a regional manufacturing, educational, transportation, medical and agricultural center. Its centralized location and economic diversity makes it a wonderful place to create and grow your business. The Emporia economy has been robust! There has been tremendous job growth at Hostess Brands, Simmons Pet Food and other businesses. Many businesses continue to grow their capacity with increased sales. Emporia is located in the heart of the ranching and farming operations which fosters a powerful work ethic that is pervasive throughout our community. Some of those work ethic attributes are the understanding of what it takes to get the job done, showing up to work on time, being ready to work, strong leadership skills, the ability to work as a team, to problem solve and pay attention to detail. In 2017 Simmons Pet Foods broke ground on a facility expansion at its Flexible Packaging Facility in Emporia, Kansas. The $38 million investment will increase operations by 200,000 square feet and create approximately 100 new jobs in the Emporia area. The company expects to begin operations in 2019. Simmons Pet Food currently employs 500 people at its Emporia location. “The expansion of our operations in Emporia represents a story about the strength of good people doing great work, strong performance and dependable partnerships,” said Jason Beyer, Vice President of Operations, Simmons Pet Food, Inc. in Emporia. “Emporia is the place Simmons Pet Food calls home and we are proud to be part

of helping this community grow through job creation.” With the tremendous amount of increased capacity at our businesses and job growth over the past years, Emporia is facing growth challenges – a tight labor market and shortage of housing. The community is stepping forward to face these challenges head on. A new housing subdivision has been developed which will provide more build home sites, which in turn will free up more homes in the market. Emporia is one of the few communities in the region that has both the Flint Hills Technical College (FHTC) and Emporia State University (ESU). With the tight labor market, there are mismatches with skills, training and education. Both FHTC and ESU assist individuals and businesses mitigate those skills and educational gaps. The future for the Emporia regional economy is excellent. With the diversity of businesses enterprises when sectors are experiencing “head winds” other sectors have strong “tail winds”. We anticipate continued and consistent growth. Anyone interested in growing their business in the Emporia Region is encouraged to contact the Regional Development Association, located in the Trusler Business Center, 719 Commercial, or find them at www.emporiarda.org

Emporia is the self-declared pet nutrition production capital of the world with Hills Pet Nutrition, Simmons Pet Food, and Cargill Animal Nutrition located there. Joseph Lowe’s Story on Finding A “Unicorn” So, as I was sitting in my house in San Diego, I decided I needed a change. I wanted a change that included 3 things that I just couldn’t find in San Diego. Things that, until I found Emporia, I didn’t think I could really find anywhere. I was seeking a Unicorn, a big foot, or a lock ness monster if you will. I was ultimately seeking a city that not only supported Disc Golf, but jumped in head first given the opportunity. I was looking for a city that had Championship Caliber courses readily available for intense training. But, also with a community that is united and knows all of the amazing benefits that disc golf offers. As an avid follower of Disc Golf and all of its tours, I have known about the Glass Blown Open and the amazing atmosphere that it brings for about 5 years now. I have seen a community come together to host one of the very few flawless (other than mother nature) events in the World. I have seen the hours of hard work the community put in to grooming the courses, assembling players packs, preparing a block party, and most importantly having enough to do to entertain over a thousand people when they aren’t playing Disc Golf. I saw in multiple videos the love and support this amazing community has for the
my take
sport. But more importantly I saw a community that really was seeking continual growth of Disc Golf. I always wondered where I could find a place that allowed me to have multiple options of Championship caliber courses to train at daily without having to drive an hour, or as we like to call in southern California, 30 miles. So, hoping on Disc Golf Course review, a site used to learn about, learn how to get to, and learn what other disc golfers thought about the disc golf courses in an area. After a few minutes of
looking around, I came across Emporia. Then I noticed, I have 5 Championship level courses within 15 minutes, 5 more within 15 minutes, and if I wanted to drive an extra 5 or 10 minutes outside of my 15-minute bubble I had many more. I was shocked to see that for the most part, all of the courses were in the same condition as they were in these big tournaments. The Last thing that went into my decision to uproot my home town, was finding a city that really understands the love of Disc Golf. A city that allows not only the growth of the sport I love, but promotes it. A city that when you log in to its webpage has a special spot for Disc Golf. A community that embraces the love for the sport and the people it has. I found that in Emporia and I see it in the community. I saw a city that is willing to listen, and trust me, coming from San Diego, that was an urban legend. So, in closing, I just want to say that I fell in love with Emporia because Emporia fell in love with disc golf. I am very passionate about not only playing, but growing this amazing sport that gives me peace, serenity, and a chance to see families interact and enjoy the company of each other. I found a city that best exemplifies the passion needed to work hand in hand to continue to grow this sport.

ARTS, CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT
Emporia has it! An extensive rejuvenation has spruced up downtown with new murals, artistic seasonal banners, landscaping, modern storefronts, and eclectic upperstory loft apartments. This is more than an aesthetically appealing community, it is one with rich artistic ties between the community and the university. The Emporia State University (ESU) Department of Art, which has been nationally accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, helps foster creativity in the community. Music reviews, murder mysteries, and Shakespeare come alive through the work of the casts and crews of ESU and Community Theatre of Emporia. Not only is there a place for theater, but coffee shops, nightclubs, local businesses, and organizations showcase live music year-round. Art exhibits featuring premier art and photography are found at ESU, the Emporia Arts Center, coffee shops, and local businesses. Accomplished musicians from ESU and abroad perform throughout the year, along with the ESU Community Chorus and Emporia Symphony Orchestra. The historic 1929 Granada Theatre has been renovated for use as a performance and event facility and has featured such artists as Trace Adkins, The Guess Who, Kansas, Billy Bob Thornton and the Boxmaster, and Street Corner Symphony. Enjoy EFF! Emporia’s First Friday, a monthly Art Walk held on the first Friday of every month. Their mission is to connect the community with local artists, musicians and businesses in order to promote cultural growth. Learn more about Emporia First Friday by liking their Facebook page. www. facebook.com/emporiafirstfriday Even Hollywood wanted to make art here when they took advantage of our prairie and historic grasslands for the Hallmark television movie trilogy Sarah, Plain and Tall! With these great ties between ESU and the community, it is a great place to allow the creative mind to thrive, with support from both avenues.
Emporia has 18 neighborhood parks. Take the kids to Peter Pan Park, which has a great playground, pond, horseshoes, top-notch disc golf course, and more! What about taking in a community band concert on a Thursday evening during the months of June and July in Fremont Park? Jones Park has over 70 acres to explore and is well known for its two disc golf courses. Tennis, basketball, or disc golf anyone? Try Hammond Park. Don’t miss Soden’s Grove Park. This park is nestled along the Cottonwood River. On the east side of the park, you will find a baseball field, David Traylor Zoo, and the Sertoma miniature train. The west side of Commercial Street is our All Veteran’s Memorial, and fishing is allowed at the stone bridge over the river, and the Flint Hills Nature trail which will link you to Peter Pan Park. The David Traylor Zoo is one of our favorite attractions. Take time to walk through the zoo to see the bald eagles, numerous animals and amphibians, and lush botanical gardens. Enjoy the lemurs yearround at Mission Madagascar. Other features found at our parks are ponds for fishing, stone shelters with picnic tables, tennis courts, softball and baseball diamonds, playgrounds, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard courts, amphitheater, and nature trails. COMMUNITY ANNUAL EVENTS
With a variety of arts, culture, and sports activities planned in Emporia each year, calendars are always full. We host annual events throughout the year including Cinco de Mayo, Farmers Market, Flint Hills Beef Fest, Flatland Cruisers Car Show, Super Custom Car Show, Great American Market, Twinkie Festival, ESU Homecoming, and Christmas Parade, just to name a few. Other cultural events include a premier summer theater program and a variety of music performances, band concerts, and art exhibitions throughout the year. Throughout the year, U.S. flags can be seen waving proudly in front of homes and businesses throughout the community. The presence of these flags do more than remind the community of the soldiers, both past and present, who have served; they symbolize how deep that patriotism goes. In 1953 a local shoe cobbler, Alvin J. King, who had lost family in World War II, believed that November 11, which was previously known as Armistice Day, was too restricting and should represent and honor all American veterans of all wars. The following year, this idea caught the attention of local congressman Edward H. Rees. He took it to Congress, and in 1954 Armistice Day was officially recognized as Veterans Day. Emporia was recognized by Congress in 2003 as the Official Founding City of Veterans Day. In 1991, Emporia became the first city in the U.S. to establish an All Veterans Memorial Park dedicated to veterans of all wars, conflicts, and peacetime service. The memorial contains a state Purple Heart Monument and a monument dedicated to recognize all wars and conflicts. While planning for the Millennium, the Emporia Chamber and Visitors Bureau organized the first All Veterans Tribute, a tribute to all veterans. Event favorites are the Veterans Day Parade, Memorial Service, and the Ham and Bean Feed served to the community. These annual events have continued since 1953.

ons! PARTNERSHIP
“One doesn’t have to look far to figure out why Emporia has come to be known as the “Disc Golf Capital of the World.”
Since its birth in 2005, Dynamic Discs has grown from a college-based, eBay hobby of Emporia State graduate Jeremy Rusco into the second-largest disc golf retailer in the world. A perfect partnership between the company — which now employs 50 people at its Commercial Street retail store and Dynamic Distribution warehouse — and the community, has no doubt been crucial in turning a small city in Kansas into a mecca for disc golfers the world over. “The support that we receive from the Emporia community is, without a doubt, the best support in the world,” Rusco said. “We live in a perfect community to support Dynamic Discs and our disc golf events to the capacity that we need them to be supported. If our community was much larger, our business wouldn’t be noticed. If we were much smaller, we wouldn’t be able to facilitate hosting the largest event in disc golf and we wouldn’t be able to attract the world championships.” The largest disc golf event in the world, the Glass Blown Open, is slated to attract 1,600 players in 2018. Along with several more smaller tournaments throughout the year,
Emporia hosted the Professional Disc Golf Association World Championships in 2016, the Amateur World Championships in 2013 and is scheduled to host the Junior World Championships from 2018 - 2020. These events and just simply the opportunity to play some of the top courses in the world attract thousands of visitors each year. While in town, those players eat at local restaurants, sleep in Emporia’s hotels and shop in its stores. Aside from the economic impact, Rusco said more than half of Dynamic Discs’ employees are ESU and Flint Hills Technical College graduates. “I think that is pretty cool that we are keeping some of the most recent graduates in Emporia,” Rusco said. “We have also hired and relocated more than a dozen individuals and families to Emporia to take on key staffing roles.” The positive effects Dynamic Discs has on the community and the area is not lost on anyone. This year, the Emporia Area Chamber and Visitors Bureau proved that when it announced Dynamic Discs as the 2017 Business of the Year. Each year, the Chamber puts out a call for all Chamber members to fill out and submit the Business of the Year Nomination Form. Upon those businesses submitted to the Chamber office, the nominated businesses are sent a Request for Information Fact Sheet, asking for information such as: a brief history of the nominee’s business and how it has evolved,
a brief explanation of the nominee’s business philosophy and reasons for success and a listing of community, civic, professional, business, religious, social, athletic and any other organization in which they have been or are a current member, among a few other questions. The past three years recipients of Business of the Year review the information and decide upon a winner. The award added to what has been a remarkable year for Dynamic Discs, as it was also recognized by Forbes Magazine and Ingram’s Magazine. “Emporia has many great businesses, great business owners and great entrepreneurs, so this really means a lot to me and all of us at Dynamic Discs,” Rusco said. In 13 years, Dynamic Discs has gone from a hobby which sold one disc in its first week to a pillar not only in the city of Emporia, but also in the disc golf world as a whole. Rusco knows the support of the community has played a big part in that success, but the best is yet to come. And as Dynamic Discs goes, so does Emporia. “I love Emporia,” Rusco said. “I love our community. I love our people. I’m proud to call Emporia home. “Remember that when Dynamic Discs grows, Emporia wins, and when Emporia wins, that all of the businesses win. Let’s keep winning!” — Written by Zach Hacker

my take I met Lelan Dains in 2012 while in Colorado getting ready for the Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race. We struck up a friendship at that time and later that year he sent me a message about an interesting race on gravel that was over 200 miles long in somewhere Kansas. I thought “no way!” He said it was right up my alley. We talked at that time and he was leaving his current job and going “home” to Emporia, Kansas to be a part of this race and to move back to his home town. I couldn’t resist. Flash forward to 2017 and it will be my sixth Dirty Kanza 200 and Lelan and I are still friends. The first time I raced the Dirty Kanza 200, I fell in love with the town and people that make
up the mix of good wholesome folks in this small Midwestern area. I loved it so much, I kept coming back year after year with my friends and family. I have watched Emporia grow and each year I love this area more. The genuine nature of the town and sincerity of the people who make up the backbone of this community are the selling point for anyone wishing to relocate to a safe and growing area.
As an Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon, I have been blessed for many years working in big teaching hospitals and trauma centers. I have lived most of my life in sixth gear and enjoying every adrenaline rush from my family, career and still riding and racing bicycles. My wife and I were blessed a couple years ago and are now the proud parents of 2 ½ year old twins. Our focus in life has changed and we were
looking for a change and slowing our lives down at least a little bit. Out of the blue, I receive a call from a recruiter and asked me if I would be interested in a small town opportunity in the Midwest. Given my practice history, he was reluctant to tell me about it since it was a much smaller practice than I was used to. He told me it was in “Emporia, Kansas.” I was immediately excited and was back in Emporia visiting within two weeks. The rest is present history. I have been sold on Emporia for years. I thank Lelan Dains for introducing me to Emporia, Kansas and the Dirty Kanza 200. I thank all of the people of Emporia and the surrounding communities for creating an atmosphere to fall in love with the area and what it has to offer. Douglas Tice, MD My family and I are excited to move to this growing area with a wonderful family environment.

Flint Hills Voted one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas, the Flint Hills are a special, magical place. They are especially beautiful in spring after the annual burns, when lush green grass and wildflowers begin to bloom. (8wonders.org)

my take
Nikki DiSalvo “It was only on a whim that I looked into the graduate programs in counseling offered at Emporia State University. My husband, Derek, was in Emporia for the 2015 Glass Blown Open and really enjoyed his stay. His overwhelmingly positive experience plus descriptions of the thriving disc golf community in Emporia caused me to add ESU to my list of prospective schools. I had little expectation that this small-town school would actually meet (let alone exceed) the standards I had for where I would want to live and work while in grad school. I was very surprised to find that
the Teacher’s College at ESU is consistently so highly ranked; the program looked like exactly what I was trying to find. There was no way my husband was going to let me miss the Glass Blown Open this year. He knew I would fall in love with Emporia through the experience. Our stay was phenomenal. I was able to schedule an interview for the grad program I applied to in Clinical Counseling to coincide with our week in town. With the guidance of the Dynamic Discs staff and the promotional materials they provided, we explored the town’s restaurants and various other shops and attractions. We began to imagine ourselves moving the 1,200 miles from New York to live in the hometown of Dynamic Discs. The atmosphere created by the Glass Blown Open made us feel right at home and very warmly welcomed. It was amazing to see the town pulling together behind this influx of over a thousand-disc golfers, whether by offering helpful directions or just a friendly hello. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better introduction to Emporia than that provided by Dynamic Discs and the GBO. My husband and I greatly look forward to being one of those people welcoming disc golfers to Emporia next year, and hopefully convincing some of them to stay.”

Moving to the Emporia Area?
Let us help you make it a smooth transition with these tips! If a move is in your future, the most reliable information on your home choice will come from a local member of the Sunflower Association of REALTORS®, Inc. The Sunflower Association of REALTORS®, Inc. is a membership organization of REALTOR® professionals serving eight counties including Brown, Jackson, Jefferson, Nemaha, Osage, Shawnee, Greenwood, and Lyon. There is a misconception that real estate agents and REALTOR® is an interchangeable term. That is far from the truth. While both are required to have a real estate license to list and sell property, only a member of the National Association of REALTORS® can use the term REALTOR®. The term REALTOR® is a registered collective membership mark that identifies a real estate professional who subscribes to a strict Code of Ethics strictly enforced by local real estate boards and contains 17 Articles and Standards of Practice. The Standards are much more restrictive and confining as to conduct than those state guidelines governing agents who simply hold a real estate license. This demands a high level of professionalism when dealing with consumers and other REALTORS®. While basic certification along with continuing education and legal requirements must be adhered to by all agents, there are additional expectations for the REALTOR® professional. All parties are treated honestly and are required to cooperate with other brokers or agents for the best interest of the client.
30 | EMPORIA RELOCATION GUIDE
Here are a few important reasons to use a local REALTOR®. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Let the experienced professional do the work for you.
NEIGHBORHOOD KNOWLEDGE
Agents possess intimate knowledge or knows where to find industry information about your neighborhood to guide buyers to the properties with the amenities on their wish list. They can identify comparable sales information in addition to pointing you in the direction to find more data on schools.
PRICE GUIDANCE
A REALTOR® will help guide clients to make the right choices for themselves when purchasing or selling.
MARKET CONDITIONS INFORMATION
REALTORS® can share market conditions which will determine the selling or buying process. Many factors determine how clients will proceed. Data such as the average per square foot cost of similar homes, median and average sales prices, and average days on market and ratios of list-to-sold prices will have a huge bearing on what the client will ultimately decide to do.
NEGOTIATION SKILLS & CONFIDENTIALITY
Top producing agents negotiate well because, unlike most buyers and seller, they can remove themselves from the emotional aspects of the transaction. They are trained to present their client’s case in the best light and agree to hold client information confidential from competing interests.
HANDLING VOLUMES OF PAPERWORK
Agents can manage complex contracts, federal and state mandated disclosures and mountains of other related documents.
VESTED COMMITMENT TO THEIR COMMUNITY
Local REALTORS® live in and support their community and are active in their community’s food banks, schools, churches and other volunteer opportunities.
