D

uring the Fourth of July weekend, the Colwell Cousins gathered in Emporia for the cousin reunion, with most of the festivities being held at the Colwell Farm. The farm is currently home to Norman and Bonnie Morray. Bonnie is the daughter of the late Stella and Willard Colwell, who once owned a chicken farm on the property. The Colwells had five children, and Bonnie is the only living sibling. More than 40 cousins from Colorado, Texas, Arkansas, New York, Kansas, Indiana and Mississippi attended the four day event, which concluded with a cook-out and fireworks at the home of Brian Morray in Gridley. Attorney: Man charged in Kan. deaths mentally ill LYNDON (AP) — A former Missouri city official charged with killing his estranged wife, their two daughters and his wife’s grandmother in Kansas snapped because of his wife’s lesbian affair and was mentally a “shell of a man,” his defense attorney said Monday as his trial got under way.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for James Kraig Kahler, 48, in connection with the four shootings, which occurred the weekend after Thanksgiving 2009 just outside Burlingame, about 20 miles south of Topeka, in the home of Kahler’s estranged wife’s grandmother.

His trial in Osage County District Court is expected to last at least two weeks.

Osage County Attorney Brandon Jones described the shootings as premeditated.

Prosecutors began their case by presenting evidence putting Kahler at the scene of the killings, including

testimony from Kahler’s 12year-old son, who was in the home when the shootings began but escaped without being physically injured.

“The defendant proceeded to go through the home, targeting each and every one of the females in that home,” Jones said Monday during his opening comments to jurors. “He fled the scene and left them to die.”

Prosecutors did not discuss Kahler’s motives for the shootings. But during his opening statement, Thomas Haney, a Topeka attorney representing Kahler, described him as a loving husband and father who appeared to have a perfect family life for more than two decades before his marriage turned “cancerous” in 2009.

“No one but a person with serious mental illness would do what Mr. Kahler did,” Haney said. “He had a psychotic break and he snapped.”

August Elizabeth Nichols

Kaitlyn Krueger and Garrett Nichols of Olpe are the parents of a daughter, August Elizabeth Nichols, born August 10, 2011, at Newman Regional Health. August has three siblings: Rylie, Taylor and Sydnee Nichols.

Grandparents are Chris and Kelly Krueger of Olpe and Rick Vaughn and Thresa Bowman of Longton. Great-grandparents are Philomena Ellis of Emporia and Phyllis Krueger of Olpe.

Alesha Dierks and Michael Storrer of Emporia are the parents of a son, Cayden Asher Storrer, born August 12, 2011, at Newman Regional Health.

Landry Jay Larkin

Abby Kile and Jonathan Larkin of Madison are the parents of a daughter, Landry Jay Larkin, born August 11, 2011, at Newman Regional Health. Grandparents are Greg and Lisa Kile of Madison and Bob and Patti Larkin of Marysville. Great-grandparents are Ruth Kile, Madison; Marge Larkin, Marysville; and Barb Ring; Marysville.

Brandon Michael Wilson

Brittany Kotas and Caleb Wilson of Kearney, Neb., are the parents of a son, Brandon Michael Wilson, born Aug. 9, 2011, in Kearney. Grandparents are Raymond and Jonna White, Kearney; Loney and Jennifer Wilson, Lubbock, Texas; and Darren Kotas and the late Wendy Woodworth, Kearney.

Great-grandparents are JoAnn Woods, Emporia; Perry and Betty White, Emporia; Ray Woods and Jean Terry, Overbrook; Delbert and Marian Kotas, Kearney; Ron and Delores Woodworth, Omaha, Neb.; and Robin and the late Cheryl Wright, Tahoka, Texas.

OBITUARIES

Vernon Elias Gilbert Vernon Elias Gilbert of Emporia died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011 at Sterling House. He was 98.

Mr. Gilbert farmed west of Emporia in Pike township from 1929 until his retirement in 1980. He also worked for several years as a finish carpenter with Delmus Goldsberry.

The son of Isaac Newton and Martha Gilbert, he was born Dec. 10, 1912, in Emporia.

He married Opal Rogers Schoepflin on Dec.10, 1943.

She preceded him in death.

Mr. Gilbert was a Christian.

He is survived by his sister, Zobedia May Wright of Emporia; his step-son David Dale Schoepflin of Ellinwood; eight stepgrand children; 27 step-greatgrandchildren; and numerous step-great-great-grandchildren.

Nellie Mae Seaman Dawson Burlington Nellie Mae Dawson of Burlington died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at Burlington. She was 94.

Mrs. Dawson taught for 40 years in elementary education, first in Coffey County rural schools for 8 1/2 years, then for 5 years in Waverly beginning in 1950, and for 12 years as a first grade teacher in Shawnee Mission, and she finished her career as a language arts consultant and special reading teacher until her retirement in 1983.

The daughter of Chester and Chrystal Chrisman Seaman, she was born January 26, 1917, in Yuma County, Colo.

The family moved to Coffey County in the spring of 1928.

She attended school at Halls Summit and Rural Districts No. 45 and No. 4, and graduated from Burlington High School in May of 1935. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the Emporia State Teachers College.

She married Olen Edward Dawson on June 4, 1940, at Ottawa. He preceded her in

death.

She was a member of the Rock Creek Church of Christ at Ottawa. She also was a member of the United Teachers Association, serving in a number of offices, and the League of Women Voters.

She is survived by her sister, Florence Madden, and brother, Bill Seaman, both of rural Waverly.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Gary Seaman, and a sister, Roselma Mutzenberg.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial will follow at Key West Cemetery, east of Lebo.

The family will meet with friends at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until services begin. Friends may also call at the funeral home Tuesday evening Memorial contributions may be made to Hand-In-Hand Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association and sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, PO Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
