Newman Regional Health was one of 16 Kansas hospitals cited for its excellence in maternity care in January 2018. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas designated 16 of its contracting hospitals as Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care as part of the national Blue Distinction Specialty Care program that recognized hospitals for providing quality and affordable care. Blue Distinction Centers are national designated hospitals that show expertise in delivering improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community. The Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on quality measures for vaginal and cesarean delivery. To receive a Blue Distinction Centers+ designation, a hospital must meet the same quality criteria as Blue Distinction Centers while also meeting requirements for cost efficiency. Nearly four million babies are born in the U.S. annually, making childbirth the most common cause of hospitalization, and cesarean sections the most common operating room procedure, according to National Centers for Health Statistics and the Agency for Health Care Research & Quality. Reducing early elective delivery is an area of focus for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Pediatrics. According to Health Affairs, elective inductions result in more cesarean deliveries and a longer maternal hospitalization. Since 2006, the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program has helped patients find quality specialty care in the areas of bariatric surgery, cancer care, cardiac care, maternity care, knee and hip replacements, spine surgery and transplants, while encouraging health care professionals to improve the care they deliver. Research shows that, compared to other hospitals, those designated as Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients. On average, Blue Distinction Centers+ also are 20 percent more cost-efficient than non-Blue Distinction Center+ designated hospitals.

Being strategically located along the intersection of I-35 and I-335 and U.S. Highway 50, Emporia is a regional manufacturing, educational, transportation, medical and agricultural center. Its centralized location and economic diversity makes it a wonderful place to create and grow your business.

The Emporia economy is still red hot. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics from 2013 to 2018 in Lyon County and Emporia, Kansas the net new employment grew by 1,012 person or 7.2 percent. Whereas Kansas only grew by 3.5 percent. The majority of that growth is attributed to Hostess Brands, Simmons Pet Food and CAMSO. Emporia is located in the heart of the ranching and farming community which fosters a powerful work ethic that is pervasive throughout our region. That work attributes are the understanding of what it takes to get the job done, showing up on time and ready to work, strong leadership skills, team building, problem solving and attention to detail. On June 6, 2019, the Simmons Pet Food flexible packaging facility expansion was celebrated with a ribbon cutting. The $60 million building and equipment investment with the potential for 200 new jobs when the plant reaches capacity. According to Jason Godsey with Simmons Pet Food, “The economic vitality of their region is a big part of enabling Simons Pet Food to make this happen. We are Emporia Proud”. Simmons announced in late 2019 that their New Jersey operations would be relocated to Emporia which will create more job growth in 2020. With the tremendous amount of increased capacity at our businesses and job growth over the past years, Emporia is facing growth challenges – a tight labor market and shortage of housing.

The community is stepping forward to face these challenges head on. A new housing subdivision has been developed which will provide more build home sites, which in turn will free up more homes in the market. Emporia is one of the few communities in the region that has both the Flint Hills Technical College (FHTC) and Emporia State University (ESU). With the tight labor market, there are mismatches with skills, training and education. Both FHTC and ESU assist individuals and businesses mitigate those skills and educational gaps. The future for the Emporia regional economy is excellent. With the diversity of businesses enterprises when sectors are experiencing “head winds” other sectors have strong “tail winds.” We anticipate continued and consistent growth. Anyone interested in growing their business in the Emporia Region is encouraged to contact the Regional Development Association, located in the Trusler Business Center, 719 Commercial, or find them at www. emporiarda.org. Last year the Emporia Chamber began a five-year strategic plan branded as IGNITE EMPORIA. One of the highest priorities of the initiative is Workforce Development.

Pet Food Capital of the World! Emporia is the self-declared pet nutrition production capital of the world with Hills Pet Nutrition, Simmons Pet Food, and Cargill Animal Nutrition located there. Emporia produces more pet food per capita than anywhere in the world and the recent Simmons Pet Food expansion will increase the capacity to be in excess of 240,000,000 cans of pet food per year.

MY TAKE

Allison Hall

Although I was born and raised here in Emporia, graduated from ESU with a business management degree and have a family who’s owned a business here since 1956, I still had to move away to “find my way.” The 5 years I was gone were some of the best learning years of my life, and even though I had an established career and amazing friends, I always felt like my life lacked a real sense of purpose. Then the day came when a phone call from my Dad really changed my life’s direction. Time had come for some of the “OG’s” who worked at the shop for many years to step back and away from the job. So now, more than ever, was my time to decide what direction I wanted my life to go in. After a couple months of talks with Dad and having gotten a recent promotion at my current job, I struggled with the thought of leaving a place that had been such a blessing to me. But boy did I make the right decision to “find my way back!” Emporia has embraced me in a way that I could’ve never imagined. Besides being the 3rd generation to manage Emporia Floral, I get the pleasure & the challenge of continuing a legacy that my grandparents left behind and that my family has worked so hard to maintain. Through the Chamber and other private organizations, I’ve quickly became involved in many activities that I never would’ve even thought about. And through those things, I’ve established new friendships and amazing professional connections that will only grow with time. I am blessed to be a part of this great, growing community and I’m grateful to everyone who’s reached out to me since I’ve been back. If you are looking toward the Midwest, I encourage you to come check out all that Emporia has to offer. I promise you won’t be disappointed!!

COMMUNITY ANNUAL EVENTS

With a variety of arts, culture, and sports activities planned in Emporia each year, calendars are always full. We host annual events throughout the year including Cinco de Mayo, Farmers Market, Flint Hills Beef Fest, Flatland Cruisers Car Show, Super Custom Car Show, Great American Market, Dia de los muertos, ESU Homecoming, and Christmas Parade, just to name a few. Other cultural events include a premier summer theater program and a variety of music performances, band concerts and art exhibitions throughout the year. Throughout the year, U.S. flags can be seen waving proudly in front of homes and businesses throughout the community. The presence of these flags do more than remind the community of the soldiers, both past and present, who have served; they symbolize how deep that patriotism goes. In 1953 a local shoe cobbler, Alvin J. King, who had lost family in World War II, believed that November 11, which was previously known as Armistice Day, was too restricting and should represent and honor all American veterans of all wars. The following year, this idea caught the attention of local congressman Edward H. Rees. He took it to Congress, and in 1954 Armistice Day was officially recognized as Veterans Day. Emporia was recognized by Congress in 2003 as the Official Founding City of Veterans Day. In 1991, Emporia became the first city in the U.S. to establish an All Veterans Memorial Park dedicated to veterans of all wars, conflicts, and peacetime service. The memorial contains a state Purple Heart Monument and a monument dedicated to recognize all wars and conflicts. While planning for the Millennium, the Emporia Chamber and Visitors Bureau organized the first All Veterans Tribute, a tribute to all veterans. Event favorites are the Veterans Day Parade, Memorial Service, and the Ham and Bean Feed served to the community. These annual events have continued since 1953.

Prior to moving to Emporia in January of 2016, I had visited Emporia several times to play in disc golf tournaments. As a Denver, Colorado resident, the 8-hour trip to Emporia and the 8-hour trip back to Denver were well worth the time every time we visited. In 2010, my youngest daughter Paige and I played in the Glass Blown Open for the first time and were so amazed at how the town embraced disc golfers. We couldn’t believe that employees at local businesses asked us about disc golf and the tournament. We couldn’t believe that restaurants had messages welcoming disc golfers on their marquees. Add to the welcome embrace a growing disc golf company known for running stellar events and some great courses in Emporia and the result was disc golf heaven! From the 2010 GBO trip until 2015, some combination of our family (threedisc golfing kids and Noemi - my disc golfing wife) made an annual trip to Emporia to play either another GBO or another Dynamic Discs event hosted in Emporia. Each year got better and better. Each year the embrace from the city of Emporia was stronger and each year the city added and/ or improved the disc golf courses, making the events even more fantastic! In the fall of 2015, our youngest daughter Paige made the choice to come to school in Emporia and enrolled at ESU and moved into the dorms. Crazy, but the decision was primarily based on her disc golfing experiences in Emporia! Little did we know that five short months after Paige moved into the dorms at ESU, my wife Noemi and I would follow suit! (Note: We did not move into the dorms, rather into a great loft apartment right downtown.) Dynamic Discs had offered me a part-time position running their tournaments. I had another full-time position which allowed me to telecommute and with the help of some great ValuNet FIBER, I was able to both work from home and work for Dynamic Discs getting events planned. Fast forward a couple years and with Dynamic Discs growing, a full-time position was offered that included both event planning and some HR and community relations responsibilities. I accepted the position and Noemi and I purchased a home and planted our own Emporia roots. Having spent 10+ years in Denver, we certainly have missed the amazing variety in food, shopping, and the arts. The trade-offs though are pretty solid. We can get anywhere in town in about 8 minutes. The folks we interact with and do business with know us by our names. The disc golf is world class! And at the end of the day, if there is something Emporia does not have to offer, it is a relatively short and simple drive to Topeka, Manhattan, Lawrence, Wichita, or Kansas City where anything we had in Denver can be found!

AREAS #1 REAL ESTATE AGENCY

Being a son of military veteran, I was born in Okinawa and traveled and lived in many places around the world from small towns to large cities. In 2007, I chose to move to Emporia, Kansas. Twelve years later Emporia, Kansas becomes the longest place I have lived in my entire life. When I turned 50, I mindfully decided to plant my roots into the community by buying my dream house. A year after that, I changed my path to dig my roots even deeper by working for Emporia State University. Why, you may ask? Emporia, Kansas is the place where you can make a difference and see it happen. The community embraces your visions with warm welcomes and guidance. Being here has evolved me in becoming a giving and caring citizen that truly wants to be a part of the growth of our community and especially Emporia State University. Take charge of your growth!

Flint Hills Voted one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas, the Flint Hills are a special, magical place. Located west of Emporia, and extending north and south for several hundred miles, the Flint Hills are one of the last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in the world. They are especially beautiful in spring after the annual burns, when lush green grass and wildflowers begin to bloom. (8wonders.org)

“Inspiring the Future; Honoring the Past” The NTHF recognizes career teachers, preserves educational history with a museum, and inspires current and future educators to make education their career. In 2014, The NTHF established the Memorial to Fallen Educators, a permanent tribute to educators who literally “gave their all” for their profession. It became the first national memorial in the state of Kansas in April of 2018, and is now the National Memorial to Fallen Educators, located at 18th and Merchant.
