Teaching / Learning A very important quality of the students studying in the Department of Computer and Instructional Technology Teacher Education is that they have a multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary education. Beside professional knowledge and skills as computer teachers, they develop their analytical thinking skills and gain a global approach to matters of education and daily events taking place around them and the world. Through close cooperation with the state and private elementary and secondary educational institutions, the department offers its students the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge they gain in actual practical context. As a result, the students are trained and helped graduate in such a way so as to have no difficulty in their future professional lives.

Computer & Instructional Technology Teacher Education

The Department of Computer and Instructional Technology Teacher Education provides various opportunities for its students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a great range of state and private elementary and secondary level educational institutions through on-site field and practical experiences. Besides, the students studying in the department to become computer teaching professionals have technically and technologically equipped classrooms and computer laboratories to practice what they theoretically learned in their courses. The department aims to provide a unique educational opportunity to individuals who wish not only to develop their personal educational potential but also wish to help others to achieve theirs.

Undergraduate Program Activities / Major Accomplishments

The Department of Computer and

Instructional Technology Teacher Education aims at training computer teachers to be appointed at the elementary and secondary levels of the schooling system in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Turkey. Primarily, the department targets to train computer teachers who can reach knowledge and develop awareness regarding how to use the latest technology and instructional methods and techniques, who possess creative, sophisticated and distinctive personality and strive for self-growth by adopting the principle of life-long development.

The prospective graduates of the Department of Computer and Instructional Technology Teacher Education are expected to perform distinctively on career examinations and succeed in their personal enterprises. The underlying rationale of this expectation is the result of their selfconfidence and self-esteem developed in a free, creative, pragmatic and acquisitional environment created by the department. The primary uniqueness of the Department of Computer & Instructional Technology Teacher Education is related to two major facts. One, the professional skills that the students will have gained by the time they graduate and two, the employment opportunities for the state and private elementary and secondary educational institutions. The multi-dimensional base of the department supports the students to find multiple paths throughout their lives.


About the Degree Program The department offers an undergraduate BS degree in Computer & Instructional Technology Teacher Education. This undergraduate degree program aims to equip students with up-to-date knowledge and practical skills necessary for computer teachers. The studies in the department entail an academic program of 8 semesters. The greatest advantage that the students will benefit is that they will have an opportunity to take some elective courses from a wide range of course offerings for improving different aspects of their career and individual interest.

Career Opportunities and Graduates The Department of Computer & Instructional Technology Teacher Education aims at training teachers to be appointed as computer teachers at the Turkish or English medium state and private elementary and secondary level educational institutions in the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, Turkey and other countries. Both artistic and scientific aspects of the department have been designed to educate the students in such a way that they become individuals who can easily adapt themselves to the new trends in education and technological improvements.

Teaching / Learning The department offers teacher education that aims to combine theory with practice. The training offered is designed to engage students in interactive lectures with additional individual and group projects both in and outside the classroom. The curriculum is based on courses that aim to improve students’ language knowledge and skills, to help them establish a methodological repertoire, including methods, techniques and strategies, which they can actively put into practice. The highly proficient students equipped with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience will operate effectively in a classroom environment and in any other relevant contexts. As they are able to solve problems and know how to deal with their own future students properly, they will be effective and autonomous language teachers.

English Language Teaching Undergraduate Program

The main aim of the Department of

English Language Teaching (ELT) is to train students to be well-qualified English teachers. Training as such involves equipping the prospective teachers with the necessary theoretical knowledge, skills and strategies so that they meet the required standards and help improve foreign language education locally and/ or internationally. The graduates are knowledgeable, innovative, and autonomous professionals who are ready to meet the challenges of the field.

With its distinguished staff, national and international academic activities, technological infrastructure, and facilities, the department helps the students integrate with the modern world of education. The department provides teacher candidates with practice teaching opportunities in collaboration with the EMU schools and the Ministry of Education. Moreover, the department has a multi-functional ELT library with rich resources, which can be used for self-study and research. The department organizes seminars and workshops to help students improve their academic knowledge, inform them about the summer schools and graduate education abroad, and give them the opportunity to mix with each other through social activities.

Activities / Major Accomplishments The ELT Department has updated its BA and MA curricula, and is currently playing a leading role in its uncompromising approach to quality. The department undertakes quality research and trains prominent scholars through the opening of its doctoral program which will help the field of ELT to advance through research. It has an increasing number of graduate students from overseas, creating a multicultural environment. In addition, by means of international ELT conferences (2001, 2006 and 2010), it is made possible for the academic staff and the students to meet important scholars in their fields. The academic staff conduct projects for and provide advisory services to the Ministry of Education in curriculum development, testing and in-service training.


About the Degree Program The first year concentrates mainly on language improvement courses that consolidate students’ English language knowledge and skills. In the second and third years, students take major area, methodology, education and two literature courses, which equip them with the necessary theoretical and practical background in the field. In the fourth year, in addition to compulsory and elective major area courses, students are offered school experience and teaching practice courses where they put all their previously gained theoretical knowledge and practical experience into use.

Career Opportunities and Graduates Graduates of the department generally perform very well on career examinations and become successful in their professional activities as a result of the high-quality education and facilities offered by the department. The graduates are entitled to be appointed as English language teachers at every level in the Ministry of Education as well as in private institutions. Besides, if they fulfill the requirements, they can continue their MA and PhD studies in the department or abroad, which will help them to be more competitive in the field. They can also be employed as translators, communication experts and teaching advisors at various public and private institutions.
