MENTORS OF THE INTERNATIONAL OFFICE The 2010 academic year has arrived and Eastern Mediterranean University is increasing in size which means increasing student retention. The International Office is getting more support from the students who are called MENTORS. The mentors run the show during orientation, activities and events and they form a strong bridge the international office and the students at Eastern Mediterranean University. With the student population at EMU, the population of mentors needed to be increased as well. With this increasing population of the mentors, there had to be a distribution of jobs for them. So, advisor mentors, tutor mentors, technical design mentors and exchange mentors have been divided into groups to work on the retention of students at EMU.

Advisor mentors are from different countries and can speak more than 15 languages. We thought the students with problems would be more comfortable with mentors who share the same language and culture as them. So Turkish, Iranian, Nigerian, Azeri, Iraqi, Russian, Ukrainian, Kazak, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Turkmen, Indian, Bangladesh, Pakistani, Kosovo, Albanian and Hungarian mentors are ready to help all the students at EMU.

TUTOR MENTORS
We have students who have problems in their courses and there are volunteer students who would like to tutor these students. The duty of these Tutor Mentors is to match the Tutees and Tutors so both sides are satisfied. Tutees get help with their courses and tutors de-charge their energy.

EXCHANGE MENTORS
As the Eastern Mediterranean University exchange program is increasing in size, EMU students who have been on exchange were kind enough to accept to help in the exchange program for the International Office. They are the mentors for EMU students who would like to go on exchange. They tell the applicants about their experiences on exchange and guide them through their application process.
Some of our students are so creative and talented that they can design websites, posters and flyers for the announcements of International Office activities. They dedicate time and energy to their work which you can see from the posters and flyers they have created.
Mentors HELP IN THE ORIENTATION Greeting students at the airport at any time of the day, bringing them to the dormitories, helping them with the registration, introducing them to the departments, providing their internet and other communication devices … What could we have done without the mentors? We paid special care for the new student’s arrivals and mentors who can speak their language and have shared the same culture were the mentors to greet them and settle them so the first impression of the student is “It feels like home!”

Eastern Mediterranean University has the highest number of students and also the highest number of international students. In order to have a harmony amongst each nation, every year a president election takes place where each society chooses their president who works as a mentor at the same time. They inform the international office of the events and activities they would like to have throughout the year and international office provides all the logistics for them. If it was not for the society mentors, each nation would not have felt so much at home with their celebrations of their independence days, religious holidays, republic days… Thank you for the society presidents for getting your societies together.

BIKE STATION CEREMONY with Our Mentors
If you have visited EMU before, you would know the size of the campus. It is really big, just suitable for cyclists. So, EMU established bicycles lines and bike stations around the campus for the students. Students take the bikes from one station and then leave it at the one closest to their destination. Just as it is popular in Northern European countries to come across bicycle convoys, we will see more of these convoys at EMU from now on. Thus, Bike Stations were announced to EMU students and staff with a ceremony and of course our mentors added color to the event. We are thankful to all of them for being with us at every special event of EMU.

Our mentors have never let us down and are always there when we need them. The education exhibition at Azerbaijan was enlightened with Eastern Mediterranean University stand where two of our Russian and Azeri speaking mentors not only informed the participants about EMU but also visited the schools and gave seminars about EMU and International Student Scholarships. Aynur Shibliyeva Istillozlu with her language variety managed to reach all the students and parents interested in Eastern Mediterranean University.

Being smart is something, being creative and smart is another. Our mentor designed posters, announced to all EMU about a film festival of her mystic country India and had the Indian films play for three days in the Blue Hall for the EMU students. Well Done Shireen and Thank you for your great efforts.
