The Home Front in Tredegar during the Second World War Part 10—Local Studies Activity Pack

At the library you are going to discover some facts behind one of the many men from Tredegar that was killed during the Second World War. The library will provide you with a piece of paper containing basic information about a man which will enable you to find out more by searching online databases. On this double-sided sheet you will need to record the information that you will discover. Because space is limited you will need to work in groups of 2 or 3 at each computer. Library staff will be able to help you find the correct websites.

1. What was my name? 2. What was my rank or position that I held? 3. How old was I when I died? 4. When did I die?

5. Where did I die? 6. Where am I buried? 7. What was my link to Tredegar? 8. What more can you find out about the battles that I fought in?

Do you know anything about what any of your relatives did in the war? Were they in the armed forces? Maybe you could find out more about them, just in the same way that you have found out all about me!

Visit arrangements Please contact Janet Karn, Library Manager at Tredegar Library to arrange a visit: janet.karn@blaenau-gwent.gov.uk or 01495 357869 / 357870 Tredegar Library is closed all day on Thursdays. If you wish to take advantage of a visit to the museum and the local studies library this is currently only possible on Wednesday and Friday mornings. The maximum number of children that can be accommodated on a visit to the museum AND library AT THE SAME TIME is just 30. In order for the visit to run smoothly, the children will need to be split equally into two groups of up to 15, with one group working downstairs in the museum and other working upstairs in the local studies library. After the first hour, it is recommended that the groups swap over and alternate their activity with the other group. The time needed for a joint visit is approximately 2 hours plus any comfort or snack/ refreshment break which time may allow. Neither museum or library have a dedicated space for breaks or eating and drinking although every effort will be made to provide you with a suitable area. Toilet facilities are available. There is a bus stop at the library which can be used for drop off / pick up.
