Elementary school’s students leave school at p.m. 4:30. Instead of walking home directly, they usually play around with friends, stop by food stands to have a ice tea or snack or being attracted by some interesting things on the way home.

I stalked one of the school’s students after she left school and then recorded where and when she went before home.

Modular House What should we do to deal with the rapid growth of human population and the limit of land?

Geographic Condition

Broke the Limitation

More than 90% Taiwanese people live in cities that on the west part of Taiwan. The middle and east parts of Taiwan are full of mountains and gorges.

If we can broke the limit of geographic conditions then we have more land to use. That is to say, we don’t have to live in houses like bird cages.

Technique Traditional Taiwanese temples were built without glue, concrete or nails. People cut woods into different shapes for particular purposes like support, hang or just for decoration. Then these wooden parts would be combined into a bigger part like a roof or arch. Finally, fit all the parts together to build the temple.

Economic In the 1960th, Kaohsiung, the south of Taiwan became well known for its bananas. In 1963, Japan port to receive Taiwanese bananas. Since the bananas have been very popular in Japan. Apparently, all money earned for banana exports to Japan accounted for a 3rd foreign trade. The value of 6 bananas used to equal to the value of an imported suit. Bananas were the best export business in Taiwan - like a Banana Kingdom.

Concept Banana’s shape, bundle and how bundles connect to each other are very good ideas to build human’s houses.

Model Use the technique from the traditional temple and the ideas from the banana to develop unit. The model is made of several main units and connectors. The connector make the model capable to change its shape to fit different conditions.

Revive The high line railway was using for goods transportation. In 1980th, the railway shut down, the area also became unprosperous. But now, after the High Line Park’s opening, it’s full of fancy restaurants, hotels and stores which are modified from abandoned factory or warehouse. This is a great instance of reviving old area.

Sounds great!

New Attraction Free Kayaking in the new park. It will be the first attraction in the new park. Don’t worry if you don’t feel like to do kayak, there are things you can enjoy in the park.
