No 2 Make a splash. The beautiful Cattaraugus Creek in Zoar Valley, Gowanda, offers a White Water Experience like no other. Feel the excitement and embrace the challenge when negotiating the many passageways and pools. Peak times are in the spring; summer’s low water levels make it a more relaxed journey down the Creek; and fall rains raise the water level and offer great trips down the nearly 10 miles of river. Different spots on the river offer up to Class III rapids; the calmer legs of the journey show off the scenery of the adjacent rock formations and wooded areas.

No 3 Take to the mountains on a bike. Holiday Valley has a 4-5 mile “race loop” that begins at the Holiday Valley Training Center and goes up gradually across the ridge line of the resort where you can choose to ride the wider and more forgiving cross country trails or the skinny winding single track to the top. For the adventurous, there are plenty of single track trails off the main route. At Eagle or Tannenbaum you can venture out across the logging roads behind the Valley and on to the 35+ miles of WYMBA trails in the State Forest. IMBA has rated the trails around Ellicottville as “Epic” so have at it! It’s all pedal power at Holiday Valley...no lift service, and no charge to use the trails. Please remember these common sense rules: wear a helmet, ride with a friend, bring a map and stay off the golf course and Sky High. Mountain bike rentals are available at the Inn at Holiday Valley, (716) 699-2345. Mountain biking is a popular activity in Allegany State Park and tops the list of favorite places for a mountain bike adventure in Western New York during the summer months; 6

in the winter, it’s a renowned crosscountry ski center. Located in the northern half of Allegany State Park, The Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area offers some of the finest groomed cross country ski and mountain bike trails in the Northeast. The 25 miles of multiuse trails attract mountain bikers in the summer and fall. The wide trails wind through mixed oak and hardwood old-growth forests and offer spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, forests and Red House Lake. AlleganyNordic.org Golden Hill State Forest offers two loops, one blazed red and the other blue. It’s a little off the beaten path and gets a lot less use than the much larger Ellicottville trail system, but the trails are just as good and offer plenty of riding to keep you occupied all afternoon. There is even an area known as the “Whammy”, one of the most difficult sections of trail in the region, but don’t worry, it’s optional – in case you aren’t up to it. There is a map of the Golden Hill trails on the WNYMBA Ellicottville area map (available from several stores in Ellicottville, including the Bike and Bean). (716) 699-2453.
No 4 Roll around. When was the last time you went rollerskating? Skateland in Franklinville will get you rolling again and provide great entertainment for your children. This group of women from around the southern tier have formed this skaterowned and operated league.
No 6 Check out a rodeo. Watch cowboy and cowgirl athletes compete in skill and speed events such as team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, bull riding and barrel racing at Ellicottville Championship Rodeo, which takes place July 4th weekend. No 7 Pretend you’re Tarzan. Challenge yourself at Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley Mountain Resort. Plan your attack through a series of platforms and “bridges” where the challenge is to figure out how to get to the next platform. The platforms are built in the trees and connected by logs, hanging chunks of wood or other obstacles. There are 12 courses with varying levels of difficulty; the more difficult the course, the higher up it is in the trees. Most courses include a zipline ride, and some have more than one. Sky High is suitable for visitors age seven and up. Open early May through November. Reservations required on weekends and suggested for weekdays at the Aerial Park. (716) 699-HIGH. HolidayValley.com
No 8 Climb a tree. The Climbing Forest at Holiday Valley is the only one of its kind in the U.S. There are ten trees with color coded climbing holds and the difficulty ranges from very easy (yellow) to very challenging (purple). Each climber is fitted with a harness that is clipped into an auto belay system. Once a climber reaches the top of the tree, they let go and the belay system slowly lowers them to the ground. The minimum age to enjoy the Climbing Forest is 5 years old, and there is a kids’ area with two trees where the youngest climbers can climb about 6 feet up and climb back down. The Climbing Forest is open from 9am to 6pm daily through Labor Day, then weekends through mid-November. HolidayValley.com

No 21 Observe Old Order Amish. Cattaraugus County, with its vast countryside ideal for farming, is home to Old Order Amish. This is a religious group of people who generally do not conform to the modern, or “English,” way of living. It is considered of the Old Order because the groups adhere to strict guidelines and have resisted changing with the times. They use no electricity, have no running water, and dress in plain clothes usually hand made by the women in the family. Amish are incredibly gifted, known for their craftsmanship. Many different shops and stands can be found roadside to sell their handworks, although they are not open on Sundays and some holidays. Take refuge in the simpler way of life while driving through the rolling hills to see how the Amish live and work. You will most likely come along a buggy or two, and see them walking or working in their fields. “Step on” guides are available for personalized tours, by calling the following:

Snowsnake is an ancient Hodinöhsö:ni (Iroquois) game that is played in the winter to see who can throw a snowsnake (a sixfoot long, specially prepared wooden stick) the furthest, at speeds that can reach over 100 miles an hour along a quarter-mile snow track. Traditionally, it was a men’s game that was used to sharpen one’s hunting skills. Some say that it was once also used to send messages between communities. The game is highly competitive. Today, Native teams travel between territories to compete with each other. Viewing the competition is open to the public in late January. Please check our website for event details. Some of you may not be old enough to remember, but a drive-in is an outdoor theater where you can see a movie from the comfort of your car, right under the stars – there’s a large screen, a projection booth and a concession stand. ADVENTURE NATURE
No 38 Geo-what? Try your navigation skills with geocaching. Geocaching has grown immensely in popularity over the last five years. And in case you’ve been living in a cache (hidden container) under a rock for these past five years, geocaching is a form of outdoor treasure hunting. Individuals or groups use GPS devices to locate the caches, which range from “easy to find” to “takes some time to locate.” Some caches will have keywords to write down or a logbook in which to sign your name. For those who need any more incentive than the thrill of the hunt or getting out and exploring your environment, some GeoTrails offer little mementos to signify your finds, and even a Geocoin for completing all or most of the trail.
The New York Amish GeoTrail is a scenic beginner trail, taking its participants through the Amish countryside. Visit our website, EnchantedMountains.com, to try this one or learn more about the Old Order Amish residing in the county. There are also many caches located on the North County Trail/Finger Lakes Trail that run through Allegany State Park, which is also the host of the annual ASP Geobash, a weekend long event dedicated to those that love Geocaching. Individuals who are very supportive and involved in this community have posted their own trails in our area for others to enjoy on Geocaching.com. No 39 Float your boat. One of the best parts of summer is being out on the water, whether you’re swimming, jet skiing, fishing or just relaxing in the sun. Soak up the sun along 91 miles of natural
shoreline on the Kinzua Reservoir. “Put in” at Onoville Marina, the largest inland marina in New York State. Campsites, dock space and fuel dock are available early May through September. Great dining is nearby at the Horseshoe Inn and the Nic-LInn, or grab something quick at the Bayview Mini-Mart and Ice Cream Parlor. View the beautiful scenery of rolling hills, crystal clear water, and wooded areas as you drift or speed along. No boat? No worries! The Bayview Mini-Mart also provides boat rentals. Or launch your boat into the Allegheny River at Friends Boat Launch in the Quaker area of Allegany State Park, just 2.5 miles south of Rt. 86 on Rt. 280. No 41 Take a hike any season. Miles of trails await. Allegany State Park has a multi-purpose 5 mile paved bike/hike path around the lake in the Red House area. The Allegheny River Valley Trail, a nature filled 5.6 mile loop along the Allegheny River and a 2-mile loop around the St. Bonaventure University campus, offer a smooth, paved path for feet and wheels. The Pat McGee Trail stretches 12.1 miles from Salamanca to Cattaraugus. Snowmobilers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, hikers and equestrians will enjoy the medley of animals, plants and birds. Well-behaved leashed pets are welcome on all three. For the adventurous, there is approximately 80 miles of the Finger Lakes Trail, which merges with the North Country Trail in Cattaraugus County. Starting in Allegany State Park, at the New York border in Red House, it twists and turns all the way past Franklinville. Many people use the miles of trails in Allegany State Park and around the county for hiking, biking, horseback riding and snowmobiling. In order to maintain the trails and keep them preserved for all,
volunteer groups collaborate on specific dates to do major cleanups, maintaining and clearing out the trails. These volunteer groups have a core of members (some from neighboring counties) that participate and are always looking for help. No 43 See the majestic bald eagle. Nothing can compare to the beauty of watching a bald eagle in flight. Many of our county residents and visitors have viewed one flying overhead while kayaking on the Allegheny River and Cattaraugus Creek, or stopped alongside the road in the Quaker side of Allegany State Park to scan for these endangered birds. Even if you’re not lucky enough to see a bald eagle, you can observe osprey, cerulean warblers, and different species of hawks. Onoville Marina has also had a number of bald eagle sightings, soaring gracefully above the water.

doesn’t mean slowing down. For some people, the shortening hours of daylight and cooling down of temperatures means a natural progression to slow down and stay indoors. Here in Cattaraugus County the speed of summer stays ramped up with our annual fall festivals. Best known is the Ellicottville Fall Festival which takes place Columbus Day weekend each year. Here you can peruse streets lined with vendors, pig out on all sorts of delicious food, take a fall chair lift ride or even compete in EVL Idol. At the Salamanca Falling Leaves Festival, held in the beginning of October, you can have a blast at the carnival, shop for native artworks, or watch the parade. With the picturesque fall foliage found throughout the hills and valleys in the Enchanted Mountains, it’s no wonder we have so much to celebrate!

Millions of gallons of water rocket over Niagara Falls every minute – about 750,000 gallons each second!
