Slow Down Along the Amish Trail
The Amish Trail is an area of Western New York that has the largest Old-Order Amish community. This is a self-guided tour through our Amish area, including the town of Leon which is the largest Old-Order Amish community in the United States. These people have resisted innovations and live without electricity, phones, cars and other modern conveniences.
These shops are not open on Sundays and some holidays, and do not accept credit cards. Baked Goods along NY’s Amish Trail

Our Amish Trail map will show you the way to follow hand-painted signs down the back roads to the Amish businesses where you can purchase a wide variety of goods, each made with unsurpassed quality and craftsmanship. The Amish sell their products from their homes, and their shops could be attached or in a separate building next to their home. Look for the “Open” sign!

View from Kayak on Red House Lake Allegany State Park. Greg Spako
Outdoor Fun
Kayak/Canoe/SUP Kayaking and the newer sport of standup paddle boarding, are among the fastest growing outdoor recreational activities and now it’s easier for you to access the Allegheny River. 2015 brought the installation of two floating launches that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. These floating docks are safer for launching kayaks and canoes because of their ramp-like attachments with rollers that help boats glide in and out of the water. Linn Launch, off Steam Valley Road in the Town of Portville, has parking for 6 vehicles (and a port-a-pot). Steam Valley Road is off Rt. 417 very near the Portville Drive In, on the opposite side of the road. As soon as you turn onto Steam Valley Road, you’ll cross the river and immediately see the parking for Linn Launch. A similar launch has been built downstream in Allegany near the First Street Bridge. The launch area also has plenty of parking available and has access to a number of nearby restaurants, stores and businesses.
Whitewater Rafting Embrace the challenge as you negotiate the many passageways and pools of the Cattaraugus Creek through Zoar Valley. Peak rafting is when snow melts in early spring or in autumn when rains raise the water level. Summer’s low water level offers a more relaxed journey as you meander down the creek. Spots on the river offer up to Class III & IV whitewater while the calmer legs of the journey offer great scenery of the rock formations and wooded areas. Spring and Fall conditions aren’t for everyone, so before you head out there with your kayak, we encourage you to contact the Zoar Valley Paddling Club as these folks can offer sug-
gestions on navigating the waters safely. ZoarValleyPaddlingClub.org. The following three companies offer guided raft runs on the Cattaraugus Creek and can mold a journey to suit your skill level: Adventure Calls Outfitters, Inc. 585-343-4710 or 888-270-2410 Adventure-Calls.com Catt Rafting Adventures 716-866-1461 CattRaftingAdventures.com Zoar Valley Canoe & Rafting 800-724-0696 ZoarValleyRafting.com

Hiking & Birding Twelve percent (or 99,500 acres) of the county is state and county lands; that gives hikers a large area to explore! Allegany State Park has a multi-purpose 5.6 mile paved bike/hike path around the lake in the Red House area. The park also offers 18 hiking trails, 3 of which have been developed as self-guided nature trails. The Allegheny River Valley Trail, a nature filled 6.2 mile loop along the Allegheny River and around the St. Bonaventure University campus, offers a smooth paved path for feet and wheels. The Pat McGee Trail stretches 12.1 miles from Salamanca to Cattaraugus. Snowmobilers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, hikers and equestrians will enjoy the medley of animals, plants and birds. Well behaved leashed pets are welcome on all three. You’ll also want to check out the miles of trails at Rock City Park, Griffis Sculpture Park and Pfeiffer Nature Center. For the very adventurous, there is approximately 80 miles of the Finger Lakes Trail, which merges with the North Country Trail in Cattaraugus County. Starting in Allegany State Park, at the New York Border in Red House, it twists and turns all the way past Franklinville. The Finger Lakes Trail is a 558 mile trail that travels through New York from Allegany Mountains to the
Catskills. The North Country Trail is a much longer undertaking ranging all the way from North Dakota to New York, being approximately 4,600 miles long. Both of these trails are renowned and the parts that pass through our county are absolutely breathtaking.
Pfeiffer Nature Center Pfeiffer Nature Center is an organization committed to building a foundation of knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the intrinsic values and aesthetic qualities of the natural world while instilling a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the natural world within the global community. It is also a haven for snowshoers and hikers. The Center is comprised of 2 properties. The Lillibridge Property is located at 1974 Lillibridge Road in Portville and is home to a rustic American Chestnut log cabin listed in the National & State Registers of Historic Places. Here you will find 20 acres of old growth forest and a timber frame pavilion which is available for picnics, receptions, birthday parties and reunions. The Eshelman Property is located at 1420 Yubadam Road in Portville and has an active sugar bush, on-going scientific research projects and a small farm. There are 3 miles of trails, and more are being developed. PfeifferNatureCenter.org Visit EMFun.us/Hike

Rock City Park Rock City Park is home to enormous rock formations and is often called the “eighth wonder of the world”. It’s the World’s largest exposure of quartz conglomerate. This is a great place to hike under, around and over rocks that are as big as a house. A great place to view fall foliage is from Signal Rock which was a long range signaling point for Indians. Wear casual clothes and comfortable shoes and plan to spend at least one hour here. There’s plenty of room for a bus or RV, so bring your friends. Open May 1st through October 31st, 9am - 6pm daily.

Interact with sculptures in the woods and fields on over 400 acres at the Griffis Sculpture Park. For more than 42 years, the steel sculptures of Larry Griffis, Jr. and other international artists have been residing in the woods, fields, and even ponds of Griffis Sculpture Park. The 400 acre Ashford Hollow park is not only a tremendous regional attraction, but holds the distinction of being America’s largest and oldest sculpture park. The park features over 250 large scale sculptures dispersed through miles of hiking trails. Holiday Valley Holiday Valley has long been known as "The Aspen of the East", is a leader in the ski industry and was voted #3 ski resort in the East by SKI Magazine readers. With 13 lifts, 58 slopes and trails, (day AND night skiing) 3 base lodges, two hotels, tubing park, golf course, pools, aerial park, mountain coaster and numerous amenities, you and your family will be entertained whatever season you decide to visit.
Dreaming of watching the gentle snowfall in front of a warm fireplace? Ever sat in a hot tub when it's only 10 degrees C outside and the snow is falling? Tell Holiday Valley what sort of accommodations you're dreaming of, whether it's a chalet facing the slopes or a cabin in the woods, they even have an RV Park for your home away from home. There are plenty of dining choices at Holiday Valley as well, but feel free to load up your crock pot and picnic with the family at Tannenbaum Lodge.
When the snow melts, golf carts and mountain bikes rule. Bring your helmet and test yourself on the 5 mile loop over the ski slopes. From here, you can access 35+ miles of
WNYMBA.org trails in the State Forest. Not into extreme biking? The winding country roads and rolling hills of Cattaraugus County are great for road biking. The folks at Holiday Valley can suggest some road riding loops that begin and end right there. The newly redesigned 18 hole par 70 "Double Black Diamond" golf course is challenging and well maintained and was recently nominated by Golf Magazine as one of the best redesigns in the country. Golf, ski, and snowboarding lessons for adults and kids are available and don't fret if you've forgotten some of your gear as Holiday Valley's shops will undoubtedly have a replacement. Escape with the girls for a long weekend and make Holiday Valley your home base. Golf here, then try out a few of the other local courses. At the end of the day, you can slip into the village of Ellicottville to visit the shops, restaurants or nightclubs. As you may have guessed, Holiday Valley is very large and can easily accommodate your conference or wedding reception. Bridal party on the chairlift? Yeah, they do that. Whatever season you visit, at the end of the day you can ease your tired muscles and melt away your stress at the Falling Waters Spa at Holiday Valley. Check their website, HolidayValley.com, for seasonal packages and deals. Photos from Holiday Valley Resort

Snowmobiling You’ve heard the saying, “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade”. Well, in Western New York, life hands you an average snowfall of 100+ inches of natural snow per season, so we find activities that are snow related.
Thanks to a large group of snowmobile fanatics, we have roughly 400 miles of snowmobile trails throughout Cattaraugus County. These folks clean up the trails all summer and groom them all winter so that others can enjoy the sport as much as they do. Many businesses such as restaurants and lodgings are easily accessible from these trails and cater to snowmobilers. Call for a FREE copy of one of our trail maps or to check out trail conditions. 1-800-331-0543. For information on registration, joining a snowmobile club or snowmobile rentals, please go to EMFun.us/Snowmobile.

Snowshoeing Snowshoeing is a great winter-time activity and a terrific cardio workout. If you bring your equipment, New York State lands are open to snowshoeing. The map in the center of this guide will show you where the nearest State lands are.

Try snowshoeing at Holiday Valley’s SnowPine Village where you’ll find well-lit groomed trails near the slope known as “The Wall”. Miles of well marked trails are available at Pfeiffer Nature Center where you can also rent equipment. For more information, check out EMFun.us/Snowshoe for trails, cabins and more.

Mountain Biking Allegany State Park tops the list of favorite places for a mountain bike adventure in Western New York. Located in the northern half of Allegany State Park, The Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area offers some of the finest groomed cross country ski and mountain bike trails in the Northeast. The 25 miles of multi-use trails attract mountain bikers in the summer and fall. The wide trails wind through mixed oak and hardwood old-growth forests and offer spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, forests and Red House Lake. Check AlleganyNordic.org Holiday Valley has a 4-5 mile “race loop” that begins at the Holiday Valley Training Center and goes up gradually across the ridge line of the resort where you can choose to ride the wider and more forgiving cross country trails or the skinny winding single track to the top. For the adventurous, there are plenty of single track trails off the main route. At Eagle or Tannenbaum you can venture out across the logging roads behind the Valley and on to the 35+ miles of WNYMBA.org trails in the State Forest.
IMBA has rated the trails around Ellicottville as “Epic” so have at it! It’s all pedal power at Holiday Valley...no lift service, and no charge to use the trails. Please remember these common sense rules...wear a helmet, ride with a friend, bring a map and stay off the golf course and Sky High Adventure Park. Mountain bike rentals are available at the Inn at Holiday Valley by calling (716) 699-2345. Golden Hill State Forest offers two loops, one blazed red and the other blue. It’s a little off the beaten path and gets a lot less use than the much larger Ellicottville trail system, but the trails are just as good and offer plenty of riding to keep you occupied all afternoon. Some maps can be downloaded from our site at EMFun.us/mtb, or WNYMBA.org you can pick up the WNYMBA Ellicottville area map at the Bike and Bean in Ellicottville (716) 699-2453.

Bicycling Not up to bicycling the mountains? Allegany State Park has 5.6 miles of paved trails which includes 3.1 miles around Red House Lake. Or try the Allegheny River Valley Trail which is a 6.2-mile loop trail that runs between the Town of Allegany and the City of Olean along the Allegheny River. It is handicap accessible and used by people of all ages, including babies in strollers, youngsters on inline skates, adults and senior citizens traveling by bicycle or on foot. The Pat McGee Trail is ideal for the adventurous beginner or anyone looking for a scenic ride and runs approximately 12.14 miles from Salamanca to Cattaraugus. This is a multi-use trail and besides wildlife, you may also see people riding horse or hiking. Maps can be downloaded from our site at EMFun.us/cycling
Get your motor running! Early June and mid-August, the motorcycles rumble into town for Gowanda’s Hollywood Happening and Rally in the Valley. These events bring in thousands of motorcycles to participate and donate to local charities. The weekends feature plenty of live music, motorcycle games and fun. Check our site for this year’s event dates. You can also call our 800# to request a “Ride Guide” which is a map of suggested motorcycle tours throughout the Enchanted Mountains including lodgings, restaurants and pit stops. Geocaching Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers young and old who are equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, and share your experiences online. The geocaches are hidden outdoors, so be prepared for the elements! Cattaraugus County’s Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism (EDPT) has developed 2 of these trails that can be found through the west side of Cattaraugus County where many Amish reside. Go to Geocaching.com to register, (it’s FREE) then retrieve the coordinates for Part 1 and Part 2 of The New York’s Amish GeoTrail (NYAGT). Earn a button for each of the caches you find, and earn a trackable coin when you find 10 caches along each trail. EDPT, with the help of our local Historians, has also developed The Enchanted Mountains History GeoTrail (EMHGT) which covers most of the county. This new trail offers historical facts about each of the cache locations with information from the Cattaraugus County Historical Advisory Committee. Earn a button for each cache you locate and earn a trackable coin when you find 12 caches along the trail. Visit EMFun.us/Geocache or search for NYAGT or EMHGT on Geocaching.com
Visitor Remarks: “Very enjoyable traveling around the beautiful countryside, many roads had not been on before…Found many fun and interesting sites, unique places to eat, and many places will be returning to again…… Thanks!!!” - Diana, Sheffield, PA “This was so much fun! Thanks for the adventure and introducing us to the area and the beautiful scenery. We will return.” - Sara, Canandaigua, NY “I lived in WNY several years ago and came up to see friends in Buffalo and geocache. I was so pleased to once again be back in this beautiful state. Thank you so much-I learned a lot and will definitely be back.” - Kate, Mullica Hill, NJ “Your three cache series have really taken me around the county. I have found some great places. Thanks” Mark, Newfane, NY “Loved the history on the ammo can lid & the places that we were taken to. Everyone that we met were glad to see us come. A BIG THANK YOU!!!” - Donna, Baldwinsville, NY “Thank you so much for putting together this trail, we had a wonderful time here!!” - John, Woodbridge, VA
“We are visiting from SC and made plans to hit the Amish geotrails today. I called last week and talked to a young man and he also told me about the new history Geotrail! ... Thank you for these geotrails, we will be happy to come back if you ever put another out.” - Michele, Lexington, SC “Thank you for the trail. We had a lot of fun learning more about the history of the area, and are looking forward to the next geotrail you develop!” - Alana, Elmira, NY Loved these caches! We did most of these with our camper attached….. before checking in to the Pope Haven Campground!!” - Claudia, Largo, FL My favorite of the day! I’ve done all of the county geotrails so far, and enjoy the places the caches take me to see. I spoke with the homeowner and learned more about this ‘slice of history’. It must be truly amazing to have THAT in your backyard. Thanks for the hunt! - Zombie Cacher from Horseheads, NY. Here with my 7-yr-old son today... Never been here... LOVE the place! And how strange to be 60+ miles from home and know 3 of the last 4 people in the log book. Thanks for bringing us here... Had to promise my son we’d come again! :-) - Staticbird11 from Erie Pa.
“Thank you for the adventure.” - Emily, Niagara Falls, NY

Walking Tour of African American History in Olean A two mile walking tour has been developed by Della Moore of the African American Center for Cultural Development. This walking tour will take you through a small section of Olean’s African American history and will touch on the underground railroad as well as places and people who have played a huge part in the growth of the city by being role models and citizens the area can be proud of. For group guided tours, please contact Della Moore at aaccdofolean@gmail.com or visit AfricanAmericanCenterForCulturalDevelopment.com Historical driving tours are available of the Old Chautauqua Road, Route 16, Route 62 and Route 219. Visit HistoricPath.com for history, tours and more!
Underground Railroad The term “Underground Railroad” referred to a network of people who assisted slaves in their quest for freedom. The penalties for helping slaves escape their owners were very high and could include heavy fines, confiscation of property or prison. As a result, the people involved were very secretive and even developed a special vocabulary to hide their activities. Our local historians assisted in organizing a brochure honoring the Cattaraugus County citizens who assisted runaway slaves as they traveled through our area to Buffalo and Canada in search of a better life.

Drive-In & Watch 2 Movies! Very few drive-ins are left in the USA. Why not spend a warm summer evening with the family, friends or a date at either the Delevan Drive-In or the Portville Drive-In. Both outdoor theaters have 2 screens and each screen plays 2 movies a night. You can see 2 movies at the drive-in for what you’d pay to see 1 movie at the movie theater. The most difficult part can be making a decision between which of the 2 double features to see. You’ll also find a playground for the kids, bathrooms and a concession stand with lots of food and snacks. 11739 Rt. 16, Delevan, NY DelevanDriveIn.net

{ Farm Trail }
Farm Trail Our area is rich in agricultural diversity and visiting a working farm can be a wonderful family activity, educational and entertaining for children and adults alike. Cattaraugus County’s Department of Economic Development, Planning & Tourism (EDPT) has developed a brochure showing farm businesses that open their doors to you. These folks can tell you what raising livestock entails, or how long it takes an apple tree to produce. You can see bison grazing in the fields, or see row after row of strawberry plants. Stop by an organic dairy farm and show your children where that glass of milk comes from.
You’ll also find Farm Markets in many locations from May through October. They offer fresh, locally grown produce which has been harvested at its peak for best flavor. In addition to seasonal vegetables and fruit, you’ll find baked goods and craft items made by the Amish, maple and honey products, hanging baskets, garden plants, jams and jellies, and pasture raised beef, pork, chicken or lamb. To find the market closest to you, please check CCAgHelp.com/Market
For a copy of the brochure, call 1-800-331-0543 or request a Farm Trail Brochure and Map at CCAgHelp.com.

Maple Syrup Every spring, the New York State Maple Producers Association invites families into their “sugar houses” to learn about the production of maple syrup and other related products. They give the public a first-hand opportunity to see how maple products are produced, from tree to table, along with the chance to taste and purchase maple products. Maple Weekends this year will be held March 19-20 and April 2-3. The best part is that tours and samples are FREE. To see a list of participating maple syrup producers, go to EMFun.us/Maple

{ Seneca Nation }
Seneca Nation The Seneca Nation is one of the original Five Nations of the Hodinöhšyönih, or Iroquois Confederacy. This union was created to bring peace to the Hodinöhšyönih, or “People of the Longhouse,” as they call themselves. Comprised of chiefs from the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk, it operated under an unwritten code of conduct known as the Great Law of Peace. This union was later expanded to include the Tuscarora, becoming the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Hodinöhšyönih tribes’ contiguous lands originally stretched across what is now known as New York State, similar to the shape of a longhouse. The Seneca controlled trade and traffic at the western edge of the Iroquois territory, which is why they are referred to as “Keepers of the Western Door.” The Mohawks, who lived near the Hudson River, are called “Keepers of the Eastern Door.” Like the other Iroquois tribes, the Seneca historically lived in longhouses, which were long, narrow bark-covered dwellings that housed several families from the same
clan. The Seneca are known as Onöndowa’ga:’, (pronounced: Oh-n’owndough-wahgah) or “Great Hill People.” Traditional Seneca culture is defined by the clan system. There are eight clans among the Seneca, divided into animals: Bear, Beaver, Turtle, and Wolf; and the birds: Deer, Hawk, Heron, and Snipe. Clan membership is matrilineal – it is passed on to children through their mothers. The Seneca would hunt, fish, farm and gather their food. Staples of the Seneca crop and diet were corn, beans, and squash, which are referred to as “Jöhehgöh”, the Three Sisters, and considered to be special gifts from the Creator. Everything that the Seneca historically used in their daily life came from the land or nature, including clothing, tools, cooking utensils, crafts and other materials.
what is now Western New York, since before recorded history. The riches of this land and these waters are revered among the Seneca, as is their obligation to pass along this legacy. Today the Seneca Nation has over 8,100 enrolled members and holds title to three main territories in Western New York, specifically, the Cattaraugus, Allegany, and Oil Spring territories. The Seneca Nation continues to support its own people and surrounding communities with a variety of cultural, educational and economic efforts. Through the enterprises of the Nation, revenues are generated that provide necessary services and programs to all tribal members, especially its youth and elder population.
Keeping the Legacy Alive
Seneca culture and values remain strong and intact. The vibrancy of their rich heritage is evident in the cultural events, dance, music, arts, crafts and foods that visitors are invited to experience.
