Road Cycling along Route 16.
Mountain Biking Allegany State Park tops the list of favorite places for a mountain bike adventure. The Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area offers some of the finest groomed cross country ski and mountain bike trails in the Northeast. Check AlleganyNordic.org Holiday Valley has a 4-5 mile “race loop” offering wider and more forgiving cross country trails or skinny winding single track. Mountain bike rentals are available at the Inn at Holiday Valley by calling (716) 699-2345, or at Ellicottville Bike Rentals at 716-364-5800. Golden Hill State Forest offers two well marked loops that are a little off the beaten path and get a lot less use than the Ellicottville trail system. Some maps can be downloaded from our site at EMFun.us/mtb, or you can pick up the WNYMBA Ellicottville area map which is available from the Bike and Bean in Ellicottville (716) 699-2453. Group Rides on Monday at 6PM at the Bike and Bean. Check EllicottvilleBikeShop.com for burritos and rides.
Bicycling Trails

Not up to bicycling the mountains? Allegany State Park has 5.6 miles of paved trails which includes 3.1 miles around Red House Lake. Or try the Allegheny River Valley Trail which is a 6.2-mile loop trail that runs between the Town of Allegany and the City of Olean along the Allegheny River. It is handicap accessible and used by people of all ages, including babies in strollers, youngsters on inline skates, adults and senior citizens traveling by bicycle or on foot. The Pat McGee Trail is ideal for the adventurous beginner or anyone looking for a scenic ride and runs approximately 12.14 miles from Salamanca to Cattaraugus. This is a multi-use trail and besides wildlife, you may also see people riding horse or hiking. Maps and more trails may be found and downloaded from our site at EMFun.us/cycling.
Road Cycling The winding country roads and rolling hills of Cattaraugus County are great for road biking. Check out some of these routes that start and finish from the Inn at Holiday Valley. Ellicottville-West Valley Loop - a moderate 38 mile loop with rolling hills. Beaver Meadows - a bit shorter, slightly hilly. 27 miles 875 feet of climbing Beaver Meadows Little Valley - 37 miles with rolling hills with your choice of steep and long uphill finish on Murder Hill, or the gentler Dublin Meadows Rd. Allegany State Park has 5.6 miles of paved trails which includes 3.1 miles around Red House Lake. Photo by Eyes in the Sky Productions.
Dutch Hill - a challenging 45 mile ride with 3 big hills, 2000 feet of climbing.

Twelve percent (or 99,500 acres) of the county is state and county lands; that gives hikers a large area to explore! Allegany State Park, NY's largest State Park, offers 18 hiking trails, 3 of which have been developed as selfguided nature trails. An easy hike is along the 3.1 miles of paved trails around Red House Lake. Stop by the Park Restaurant and enjoy a quick meal after your hike. The Allegheny River Valley Trail, a nature filled 6 mile loop along the Allegheny River and around the St. Bonaventure University campus, offers a smooth paved path for feet and wheels. The Pat McGee Trail stretches 12 miles from Salamanca to Cattaraugus. Snowmobilers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, hikers and equestrians will enjoy the medley of animals, plants and birds. Approximately 80 miles of the Finger Lakes Trail run through Cattaraugus County. FLTConference.org/trail At Nannen Arboretum, you may wander and enjoy the scents of trees and herbs; stroll around the lake and see the huge carp; cross country ski or snowshoe; sit through a class taught by Master Gardeners; or merely sit and embrace the silence. Open year ‘round, dawn to dusk. FREE admission. 28 Parkside Dr., Ellicottville | NannenArboretum.org
Griffis Sculpture Park is America’s largest and oldest sculpture park featuring over 250 large scale sculptures dispersed through miles of hiking trails. The Park is open May 1 to October 31. 6902 Mill Valley Rd., East Otto | GriffisPark.org

The “eighth wonder of the world”, Rock City Park, contains the World’s largest exposure of quartz conglomerate. This is a great place to hike under, around and over rocks that are as big as a house. Open May 1 to October 31, 9am - 6pm daily. 505A Rock City Rd., Olean | RockCityPark.com
Little Rock City is unique due to the large rock formations that are visible and is accessible in the spring, summer, and fall by vehicle, and during the winter by snowmobile. Located at 42° 12’ 31” N, 78° 42’ 31” W, Pfeiffer Nature Center is a haven for snowshoers and hikers. The Center is comprised of 2 properties; one is home to a rustic American Chestnut log cabin listed in the national & State Registers of Historic Places, 20 acres of old growth forest and a timber frame pavilion which is available for picnics and reunions. The other has an active sugar bush, on-going scientific research projects and a small farm. There are 3 miles of trails, and more are being developed for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Check their website for one of the many guided hikes or educational programs. 716-933-0187 | PfeifferNatureCenter.com

2017 Activities Guide | Cattaraugus County, the Enchanted Mountains of NY
Kayak / Canoe / SUP Kayaking and the newer sport of stand-up paddle boarding, are among the fastest growing outdoor recreational activities on our enchanted creeks, rivers and lakes and now it’s easier for you to access the Allegheny River. 2015 brought the installation of two floating launches that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. These floating docks are safer for launching kayaks and canoes because of their ramp-like attachments with rollers that help boats glide in and out of the water. Linn Launch, off Steam Valley Road in the Town of Portville, has parking for 6 vehicles (and a port-a-pot). A similar launch has been built downstream in Allegany near the First Street Bridge. The launch area also has plenty of parking available and has access to a number of nearby restaurants, stores and businesses. For places to put in and get out of the water, paddle events, equipment rentals or guides in the Enchanted Mountains visit EMFun.us/Paddle
Whitewater Kayaking The Zoar Valley Paddling Club can offer suggestions on navigating the local waters safely. White Water Kayaking is dangerous. Be sure to wear a helmet and lifejacket and go with a group like the Zoar Valley Paddling Club. Check their site ZoarValleyPaddlingClub.org Various Water Craft are available to rent at Red House Lake
Whitewater Rafting Peak rafting is when snow melts in early spring or in autumn when rains raise the water level. Spots on the Cattaraugus Creek offer up to Class III & IV whitewater. The following three companies offer guided raft runs on the Creek and can mold a journey to suit your skill level: Adventure Calls Outfitters, Inc. 585-343-4710 or 888-270-2410 | Adventure-Calls.com Catt Rafting Adventures 716-866-1461 | FB.com/Catt-Rafting-Adventures Zoar Valley Canoe & Rafting 800-724-0696 | ZoarValleyRafting.com

Geocaching is the world’s largest treasure hunt played by adventure seekers young and old who are equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, and share your experiences online. The geocaches are hidden outdoors, so be prepared for the elements! Discover new beautiful spots along New York’s Amish GeoTrail (NYAGT) Parts 1 & 2 which are along the West side of Cattaraugus County
With the help of our local Historians, we have developed The Enchanted Mountains History GeoTrail (EMHGT) Parts 1 & 2, which cover most of the County. These new trails offer historical facts about each of the cache locations with information provided by the Cattaraugus County Historical Advisory Committee. Go to Geocaching.com to register, (it’s FREE) then retrieve the coordinates for any of these geocaches on the trails. Visit EMFun.us/Geocache or search for NYAGT or EMHGT on Geocaching.com Watch for EMHGT Part 3 early spring 2017!

& Snowshoeing
Cross Country Skiing The Art Roscoe Cross-Country Ski Trails in Allegany State Park, are one of the finest double-track trail systems in the Northeastern US. The 20+ miles of trails are well-designed and offer skiers an exceptional skiing experience. The trails are groomed on an asneeded basis by park staff for classic-only skiing. No snowshoeing, hiking or dogs are permitted on the trails during the winter. Don’t have your own cross country skis? You can rent them at the Summit Warming Hut right across the street! Call 716-354-9163. The Woods at Bear Creek has over 10 miles of trails to cross country ski and even offer Cross Country Ski Packages! For even more miles of adventure, visit the cross country skiing trails at Holiday Valley where you can cruise the ridgelines at the top of Holiday Valley or circle the area around the golf course. If that’s not enough, Holiday Valley Resort offers miles of trails through the mountains and the backcountry of the resort along the tracks made by snowmobiles.

HoliMont has approximately 3 miles of groomed XC / Snowshoe trail. For more information on XC ski trails and rentals go to EMFun.us/xcSki
Snowshoeing Try snowshoeing at Holiday Valley’s SnowPine Village where you’ll find well-lit groomed trails near the slope known as “The Wall”. Miles of well marked trails are available at Pfeiffer Nature Center where you can also rent equipment or go on a guided snowshoe trip. Bring your snowshoes to Allegany State Park and check out the new Bear Paw Snowshoe Trail. This is a 2.3 mile trail that takes you around the Summit Area and Stone Tower. There are also acres and acres of other New York State lands that allow snowshoeing. Visit EMFun.us/SnowShoe for more information on snowshoe trails and rentals.
Tubing
Go Tubing at Holiday Valley Tubing Park. Photo courtesy of Holiday Valley Resort
Holiday Valley Tubing Park includes 24 lanes, including three group lanes where you can ride with friends. Tubing is all the fun of old-fashioned sledding--without the climb back up the hill because there are two tows to pull you up. A special Little Tubers area (smaller hill ) is available, weather permitting, for younger children. Call 716-699-2345, ext. 4406 for information on booking the park for group outings, team building or birthday parties. Learn more at HolidayValley.com/Tubing

Challenge yourself at Sky High Aerial Adventure Park
The Aerial Adventure Park is a playground in the trees featuring a series of platforms and bridges. Use strategy and balance to cross bridges, climb ladders and soar on zip lines to get to the next platform. The Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster is an effortless adrenaline rush where “cars” pull riders up the track only to zigzag down 2,940 hair-raising feet while maneuvering 15 curves, 12 waves, a jump and a corkscrew spiral. Open late May through November and some winter hours. HolidayValley.com The Climbing Forest is a 3-D version of a climbing wall and is the only one of its kind in NY State. There are 10 trees outfitted with color coded climbing holds and the difficulty ranges from very easy to very challenging. Climb up and rappel down! There’s a special kids’ area with 2 trees where young climbers can climb about 6 feet up and climb back down. These adventures are generally open May through October, but because they’re weather dependent, we encourage you to call first. 716-699-HIGH | HolidayValley.com The Seneca Clan Rock Hunt at Holiday Valley is a way for families to dig into the past together. The goal? To find all the Seneca Clan Rocks that are located throughout the resort. There are eight clans in the Seneca Nation, and each is represented by an animal with certain respected traits. Holiday Valley has placed carved “Clan Rocks” with descriptions of the clans throughout the resort. Not only is this a great adventure teaching kids how to follow a trail map, they also learn about Native American culture in this area. Go Swimming at Holiday Valley’s Pool Complex

Horseback
A group of kids going out for a ride by horseback at The Crosspatch. Photo courtesy of The Crosspatch Horse Ranch
The Enchanted Mountains is home to a number of horse-related businesses, including guided trail rides, kids camps, horse sales, riding lessons, sleigh rides and more. There are also a number of shows as well as horse pulls and trail challenges during the summer that are fun to compete in as well as to watch. If you have your own
horse, there are miles of trails for you to explore. Call us for a Horse Trails brochure that contains maps and information on local equestrian trails including those at Allegany State Park. Allegany State Park has set aside 55 miles of rolling, hillside and level trails for equestrian use. A primitive horse camping area in the Red House area is available as well as cabins in the Quaker area. 5 parking areas give you easy access to The Pat McGee Trail; a multi-use trail offering a relaxing 12 mile ride. A converted railroad bed, this trail includes 9 ecological communities, 10 interpretive stops and plenty of wildlife and plants. Near Randolph, Pine Hill State Forest is a popular spot for equestrians. Watch for native wildlife as you amble along 24 miles of paved, gravel and dirt trails. Fishing is bountiful with miles of glistening waterways, lakes and the Allegheny Reservoir. The Cattaraugus Creek has been named in the top 10 places for steelhead fishing by InFisherman Magazine. The fish begin entering the creek in September and the fishing remains excellent well into December. March through May is also a great time to catch Steelhead. The Seneca Nation of Indians has exclusive rights to hunting and fishing on their territories, but allow others to obtain a Seneca Nation of Indians Fishing License. Fishing licenses can be obtained at the Seneca Nation’s Clerk’s Office in Irving or Salamanca, or any Nation-owned One Stop Convenient stores located in Irving, Salamanca, and Cuba, NY. Drive cautiously on the road for slower moving buggies and tractors.
Nestled within the Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County, behind the hustle and bustle of today’s world, sits NY’s Amish Trail. A place where you can take a step back in time, slow down and enjoy a simpler way of life. The NY Amish Trail is a self-guided tour through our Amish area, which is the largest Old-Order Amish community in the United States. These people have resisted innovations and live without electricity, phones, cars and other modern conveniences. Our trail map will show you the way to follow handpainted signs down the back roads to Amish businesses where you can purchase a wide variety of goods made with unsurpassed quality and craftsmanship. The Amish sell their products from their homes and are usually open from dawn to dusk. Look for the “Open” sign! These shops are not open on Sundays and some holidays, and do not accept credit cards. If you’d like a more informative experience, we encourage you to schedule a custom tour of the Amish Trail. There are several organizations that offer tours with “stepon guides” that live among the Amish and can explain their beliefs and culture as you tour the area. Contact information for tours can be found on AmishTrail.com Please remember to respect the Amish peoples’ privacy and personal property, and don’t photograph them, as it is against their beliefs. As you tour the enchanted countryside, drive cautiously and watch for black, slow-moving, horse-drawn buggies. For a free Amish Information guide and map of the area, please call 1-800-331-0543 or visit AmishTrail.com.

Both outdoor theaters have 2 screens and each screen plays 2 movies a night. You can see 2 movies at the drive-in for what you'd pay to see 1 movie at the movie theater. The most difficult part can be making a decision between which of the 2 double features to see. You'll also find a playground for the kids, bathrooms and a concession stand with lots of food and snacks. To see what's playing now, check DelevanDriveIn.net or PortvilleDriveIn.com 32

{ Seneca Nation of Indians }
n a s i d n I f o n Seneca Natio
The Seneca Nation is one of the original Five Nations of the Hodinöhšyönih, or Iroquois Confederacy. This union was created to bring peace to the Hodinöhšyönih, or “People of the Longhouse,” as they call themselves. Comprised of chiefs from the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk, it operated under a complex orally transmitted code of conduct known as the Great Law of Peace. This union was later expanded to include the Tuscarora, becoming the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Hodinöhšyönih tribes’ contiguous lands originally stretched across what is now known as New York State, similar to the shape of a longhouse. The Seneca controlled 36
trade and traffic at the western edge of the Iroquois territory, which is why they are referred to as “Keepers of the Western Door.” The Mohawks, who lived near the Hudson River, are called “Keepers of the Eastern Door.” Like the other Iroquois tribes, the Seneca historically lived in longhouses, which were long, narrow bark-covered dwellings that housed several families from the same clan. The Seneca are known as Onöndowa’ga:’, (pronounced: Ohn’own-dough-wahgah) or “Great Hill People.” Traditional Seneca culture is defined by the clan system. There are eight clans among the Seneca, divided into animals: Bear, Beaver, Turtle, and Wolf; and the birds: Deer, Hawk, Heron, and Snipe. Clan membership
is matrilineal – it is passed on to children through their mothers. The Seneca would hunt, fish, farm and gather their food. Staples of the Seneca crop and diet were corn, beans, and squash, which are referred to as “Jöhehgöh”, the Three Sisters, and considered to be special gifts from the Creator. Everything that the Seneca historically used in their daily life came from the land or nature, including clothing, tools, cooking utensils, crafts and other materials.
Keeping the Legacy Alive The Seneca have lived in and cared for the forests, valleys, and shorelines of what is now Western New York, since before recorded history. The riches of this land and
2017 Activities Guide | Cattaraugus County, the Enchanted Mountains of NY
these waters are revered among the Seneca, as is their obligation to pass along this legacy. Today the Seneca Nation has over 8,100 enrolled members and holds title to three main territories in Western New York, specifically, the Cattaraugus, Allegany, and Oil Spring territories. The Seneca Nation continues to support its own people and surrounding communities with a variety of cultural, educational and economic efforts. Through the enterprises of the Nation, revenues are generated that provide necessary services and programs to all tribal members, especially its youth and elder population. Seneca culture and values remain strong and intact. The vibrancy of their rich heritage is evident in the cultural events, dance, music, arts, crafts and foods that visitors are invited to experience. The Seneca-Iroquois National Museum showcases both permanent and temporary exhibits that introduce visitors to the culture and history of the Onöndowa’ga:’ and Hodinöhšyönih including a Longhouse and a clan animal exhibit. The
museum is located at 814 Broad Street, Salamanca, NY 14779. Visit them online at SenecaMuseum.org to plan your trip. The Seneca Nation Highbanks Campground, located directly on the Allegheny Reservoir, overlooks the scenic view of the region’s rolling hills. Enjoy the comforts of cabins and chalets, relax in your RV, or pitch a tent to sleep under the stars. All tent and trailer sites have water, 30 amp electric, picnic tables and fire pits. Fun for the entire family! Highbanks is located at 1370 West Perimeter Road, Steamburg, and is open year round with deluxe cabin rentals. Visit us at CampHighBanks.com The Seneca Veterans Powwow is an annual cultural experience full of dancers, singers, native regalia, and authentic Iroquois foods. Become enamored with the visually appeasing designs, beadwork, quill work, and ribbon work of the dancers who vary in age, nation, and traditions who all compete for the top prize in their category. You will enjoy browsing thru the numerous craft vendors selling handmade native jewelry, clothing, baskets, wooden
lacrosse sticks, etc… The 2017 Seneca Veterans Powwow will be held July 14th-16th at Veteran’s Park, 520 Broad Street Salamanca, NY 14779. Visit us at SenecaPowWow.org
