NEW MEXICO RURAL ELECTRIC

COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION PROVIDES:

Advocacy

NMRECA actively works to protect cooperative interests before regulatory, political and governmental bodies as well as the general public. It monitors and analyzes events and trends that affect cooperatives; recommends policy positions to members through its board of directors; implements board decisions through participation in task forces; represents its members in regulatory and legislative proceedings; and communicates with cooperative consumers through its monthly publication, enchantment magazine.

Self-Insurance

NMRECA administers the New Mexico Rural Electric Self-Insurer’s Fund (NMRESIF), a workers’ compensation fund owned by New Mexico’s rural electric cooperatives. Formed in 1986, NMRESIF provides significant savings to its members by pooling the risks of providing workers’ compensation insurance coverage and a risk management program. Over the last eight years, the NMRESIF has returned $5.45 million in premiums to its members.

Communications

NMRECA provides advocacy and general communications through newsletters, directories, websites, social media, the annual Legislative Almanac and its monthly magazine, enchantment, which give New Mexico’s electric cooperatives a united forum to communicate with their members. The enchantment highlights people and places of New Mexico’s cooperatives and focuses on the issues facing rural Americans. In 2024, more than 113,000 cooperative members, community leaders, and subscribers received enchantment each month.

NMRESIF has returned $5.45 million over 8 years enchantment Magazine: The Voice of New Mexico’s Rural Electric Cooperatives. To advertise in enchantment, call 505-982-4671 today!

New Mexico’s rural electric distribution cooperatives and generation and transmission cooperatives provide electric power to 80 percent of the land area, and to 22 percent of New Mexicans. These families and businesses own their electric cooperatives. They control the co-op’s bylaws, vote on any significant changes in operations, and elect trustees to direct co-op activities. Their cooperatives provide service from Chama in the north to the oil fields of the Permian Basin in the southeast to the northeastern grasslands to the Bootheel desert.

New Mexico’s rural electric cooperatives, who are members of the New Mexico Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NMRECA), protect the interests of their consumer-members through their statewide association headquartered in Santa Fe. There are 19 electric distribution cooperatives in New Mexico, 18 are members or associate members. The members have invested more than $1.2 billion to provide reliable electric service. They employ more than 800 New Mexicans as linemen, customer service representatives, engineers, warehouse operators and other skilled positions.

The cooperatives are active in promoting and providing renewable energy resources and energyefficiency rebate programs for consumer-members.

The cooperatives strongly support their communities. They collectively operate one of the largest nongovernmental scholarship programs in New Mexico. The state’s electric co-ops have provided more than $17 million in higher educational scholarships to more than 11,000 New Mexico students during the past 35 years. They sponsor youth programs such as the Youth Tour and provide safety training in local schools.

Eleven of the member distribution cooperatives receive wholesale power from our member, TriState Generation and Transmission Association, headquartered in Westminster, Colorado. Four receive wholesale power from our member, Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Anadarko, Oklahoma. There are also three electric distribution cooperatives that are associate members of NMRECA. They are Duncan Valley Electric, Duncan, Arizona; Navopache Electric, Lakeside, Arizona; and Rio Grande Electric, Brackettville, Texas.

New Mexico’s electric cooperatives sponsor students to attend the Youth Tour in Washington, D.C., each June to learn about rural electric cooperatives, democracy, leadership, and our federal government.

The New Mexico Rural Electric Self-Insurer’s Fund was formed in 1986 and began operations on January 1, 1987, under the provisions of the New Mexico Workers’ Compensation Act. The fund is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of one management representative from each member cooperative. Presently, the fund provides workers’ compensation benefits to more than 800 employees representing 15 of New Mexico’s distribution cooperatives and the New Mexico employees of TriState Generation and Transmission Association. The fund also coordinates and pays for a risk management and technical training program on behalf of the member cooperatives. The New Mexico Rural Electric Cooperative Association handles day-today administration of the fund under a contract with the fund.
