The City of Encinitas is comprised of a unique mosaic of native habitats and is home to many rare and endangered plant and wildlife species. The City is committed to preserving and restoring these resources in the community.

Tucked away in the eastern part of lovely Leucadia you’ll find some amazing views and trails at Indian Head Canyon, shown here. Indian Head Canyon is a 56-acre natural open space area packed full of approximately 6.5 miles of hiking, biking and walking trails. Enjoy the shade alongside a creek or work up a sweat hiking to the top of the trail area. Many of the trails have a relatively even surface, so any level of adventurer can experience this special place.

The City established the Encinitas Habitat Stewardship Program, which includes Indian Head Canyon, to address the management and stewardship of City-owned open space areas to continue conserving and managing the habitats and biodiversity unique to the City.
