FOOD SCRAP RECYCLING IS COMING TO ENCINITAS! The Encinitas community is about to take a major step towards achieving its sustainability goals! In 2021, EDCO will begin collecting residents’ and businesses’ food scraps for recycling. Once the program begins, Encinitas residents can place food scraps, in addition to yard waste, in their green roll-out carts. EDCO will collect and process the materials at their anaerobic digestion facility, converting the materials into fertilizer and renewable energy! If everyone does their part to recycle food scraps, the new program will improve environmental and community health, convert waste into a valuable product, and help the City achieve its climate action goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

WHAT WILL GO IN THE GREEN CART?

If it grows, it goes! All organic material should go in the green cart. Examples include apple cores, banana peels, moldy bread, coffee grounds and eggshells. Meat, bones, and dairy should also go in the green cart, along with food-soiled paper and cardboard, such as greasy pizza boxes.

WHAT’S NOT ALLOWED IN THE GREEN CART?

No plastic, metal, or glass; these belong in the recycling bin. Also, no compostable plastics (bags, utensils, cups, etc.), these belong in your trash bin.

WHAT CAN I DO NOW?

Prior to the launch of the program, residents can reduce organic waste by using strategies to prevent food waste and starting a backyard compost pile. For more information and updates on the launch of the program, visit the City’s Trash and Recycling webpage at encinitasca.gov/Residents/Environmental-Programs/Trash-Recycling.
