#ENCINITASLIFE

From the Director’s Desk… Hello Encinitas,

We are pleased to offer summer camps and programs that align with the County of San Diego protocols this summer. Although programs will look a little different, we are excited to provide opportunities to the community that will keep participants engaged. In addition to summer camps, the City is offering a variety of online classes to mature adults through our virtual programming. These classes have helped to keep mature active adults socially connected through the pandemic. In addition to summer camps and programming, residents can enjoy our many wonderful parks, beaches and trails throughout Encinitas. Over the course of the last year, the City has completed Olympus Park, replaced the playground at Moonlight Beach and updated and maintained outdoor spaces for the public to enjoy. The City of Encinitas Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department wishes you a fun and healthy summer.

The City of Encinitas funded a public art project to create 53 mosaic panels for permanent installation at the redesigned Santa Fe Drive undercrossing as part of the Caltrans and SANDAG Build NCC project. The mosaics were created by Encinitas high school and college students and adult artists. Interested artists submitted applications that were evaluated by the Commission for the Arts and approved by the City Council.

An online walking tour has been created with images of each mosaic, accompanied by an artist statement and their biography. The public is invited to walk the exhibit in person or take the tour from the comfort of their home. For more information, visit: www.encinitasca.gov/euc.

A link to the walking tour is also on the City of Encinitas public art webpage. The public art installation reflects the culture of the five communities of Encinitas. With the theme “Encinitas Up Close,” the mosaics depict local flora and fauna, including people, abstract or representational in form, and are dynamic and distinguishable from a distance. The mosaic panels, 3’ x 5’ in size, were designed for the north and south walls of the bike and pedestrian lanes to enhance the use by the public. Frames for the mosaics were inset into the undercrossing walls to give the sense of an outdoor art exhibition.
