4 | an introduction This animated piece started out as a play. Or rather it started out as a book. A glorious book written by Andrea Davis Pinkney and beautifully illustrated by Brian Pinkney. The centerpiece of the book is a fold out image of the Greensboro lunch counter rendered as a roller coaster, magically loop de looping across time & space with buses and cars travelling past coffee mugs and donuts and ultimately extending beyond the limits of the page. It’s as if this counter goes on forever, as if the struggle is a continuous journey, rather than a straight line. That image captivated our imagination and inspired a wholly new story written by Pearl Cleage. Pearl’s Sit-In foregrounds a young Atlanta activist, Janet Payne, who at 11 years old has made it her mission to save the world. Literally. Throughout the play, Janet discovers what it takes to follow her moral compass and what is required when you decide to take a stand by sitting in. Her commitment to the cause is breathtaking. Both because of its depth and because of her age. But as Pearl so beautifully reminds us in this play, it’s always been young people at the forefront of social change. And what a year to celebrate young voices! But back to where we started. This was conceived as a play inspired by a book to be performed in front of live audiences in our Hertz Stage in Atlanta, GA. But then came COVID. Faced with the decision to postpone or reinvent, our formidable team of artists fully embraced the latter. Young Janet Payne’s story was more relevant now than ever. Here was a chance to invite families, students, and educators into an intergenerational dialogue about social justice, to celebrate the courage of young people following their convictions. So, within the giant constraints of this pandemic, we dreamed of a new possibility. If we can’t gather in person, how else could we still tell this story? What if we invited some new artists to collaborate with us? Luckily these questions led us to the Palette Group and the talented Adeboye brothers who joined our creative team and made this animated play possible. I want to thank our director Mark Valdez, our playwright Pearl Cleage, and our composer Eugene Russell IV — all of whom have spent their careers in live theatre and all of whom gracefully jumped into this new world of animation so we could still bring this story to all of you. Like the roller coaster lunch counter that inspired us from the beginning, we may not have travelled in a straight line to get there. But here we are, eager to share this story with all of you. So sit down, sit-in and enjoy our first ever animated play!

ometimes when options become limited and it looks like the desired result is impossible to achieve, that’s when innovation happens. For the Alliance, that’s exactly how today’s version of Sit-In came to be. “It’s been a wild journey,” says Christopher Moses, the Alliance’s Dan Reardon Director of Education. “About five years ago, the High Museum and the Alliance were talking about this collaboration around a children’s picture book exhibit that would chronicle the Civil Rights Movement both historically, what happened in Atlanta, and where we are in the world today. And we’ve been doing these collaborations [with the High Museum of Art] around children’s picture book art for a number of years. This was kind of like a dream project of all of ours.”

Fittingly for a dream project, the High Museum entitled their exhibition portion, which was on display through November, Picture the Dream. While the Alliance had adjusted their Sit-In plan from a June 2020 run to a streamed staging that fall, safety concerns about getting a cast together to rehearse meant they had to scrap even their backup plan. Simultaneously, the subject matter seemed more timely than they had anticipated. “We had two choices, one of which was to shelve the project and wait,” shares Moses. “But while this was happening, our entire country started really having a reckoning around social justice and racial equity. And we thought that we had a responsibility to tell this story now. It’s been in the works, and we thought this could really be a fantastic way for students, young people, and families to have real dialogue about what’s going on.” As creative gears started turning, the team came up with the idea to turn a High MuseumAlliance Theatre collaboration into an allhands-on-deck artistic collaboration with the Palette Group, a production company based in New York City that specializes in film, design, and marketing. “It just got crazier and more fun because none of us had ever done this before. So we were inviting new types of collaborators on board, working with filmmakers, illustrators, animators, and theatre people,” he says, adding that they also had some “dynamite original music” written for the piece. “It’s just become a really new way of storytelling that’s so exciting

12 | encore for all of us.” It might sound like this means the Alliance has opened up an animation studio, but Moses says this venture is not exactly a traditional animated movie. “It’s not like veering totally into film,” he explains. “There are people who’ve done and can do that much better and have decades of experience and far more resources. But we asked ourselves, what can we take from what we know about good storytelling in the theatrical world? What happens when we collide that with people who work in film and animation?” “[Playwright] Pearl Cleage didn’t write a screenplay; she wrote a play and we wanted to honor that. So it really does have this feeling of theatrical animation,” Moses says, adding that like a play, this piece places a heavy emphasis on the written word. “And it’s new to [the filmmakers] too. They’re learning a new vocabulary. They’re working with artists like Pearl Cleage and [director] Mark Valdez, who have spent their entire careers in the theatre thinking about character and story from a different way than they normally would. So it’s really this interesting new collaboration.” Rounding out the creative team throughout workshops last year were some small but essential team members: third grade students. “[Children] are going to let you know immediately how they’re feeling, which is why we brought in classrooms of third graders early on in the process to get their feedback and really listen to how they’re interacting with the

story,” the education director shares. “That has become part and parcel for developing new work. We want that target audience in the room. [Author] Andrea Pinkney is an expert facilitator with young people, so she and Pearl led a conversation afterwards that really led the way for what the next revision was going to be because we found out where they had questions, where they were curious, and what they were thinking about in their own contemporary world. That was enormously helpful.” With the approval of the target demographic, the Alliance team is hopeful about the potential reach of this piece. “While it’s definitely an Atlanta story and is rooted in our city, it has national appeal. So there’s a chance to get this out to communities that never would have traveled to the Alliance Theatre. It ties so directly into the curriculum for fourth and fifth graders that we think this could have lasting resonance year after year, which is something we never would have thought of. I think it’s forcing us to rethink what’s possible.” So can we expect to see more animated shorts from the Alliance? Moses says it is a possibility. “I certainly would not count out trying to do something else in this vein, even when we can get back to producing like we want to. What this really affords us is an opportunity to rethink access to our work. Normally we are hemmed in by a four week run and a limited number of seats. But we can run this for as long as we want to. There’s no limit on how many people can see it.”

BEHIND THE PICTURES: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE ANIMATORS David and Matthew Adeboye chat with us about their experience animating for Sit-In, how children are the future, and what they hope this short film becomes. STORY BY
IMAGES COURTESY OF THE
Ashley Elliott
Adeboye Brothers
How did you first get connected to the Alliance’s animation project for Sit-In? We connected with the Alliance Theatre through a collaboration we did with the High Museum on a documentary called Picture the Dream. Picture the Dream was an exhibit about educating kids on civil rights through the lens of children books. One of the books in the exhibit was titled Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down by Andrea Pinkney, which later was adapted into a play written by Pearl Cleage. The Alliance tapped us to film a mini doc/behind the scenes of the process leading up to the opening day of the play, then COVID happened, which made it impossible to have actors and crew members together on stage. So we had to re-imagine how we tell this story in a digital space. How is working on an animated play different from (or similar to) another video project? There are a lot of similarities to producing a film vs. producing an animation, like the collaboration

between a crew and all of the different moving parts to make a piece come together: the process of pre-production, production, postproduction. But some differences between film and animation are how precise everything needs to be to the script/storyboard and to know what the director wants. For example, in a film, a point or a message could get across to the audience by emotions or body movement by the actor; whereas in a 2D animation where objects are more static, everything has to be in sync and make sense for the audience to stay engaged. Why do you think this show is needed now? Children are the future. Hopefully when children see this play they will become aware that they can care about issues that are going on in the world, and they can help make changes themselves. We also love the diversity between characters and believe that this is always important for young kids to see. The three girls are a true representation of the world we live in today. What is the hope for the impact that this show has on the audience? We hope that this show brings awareness to all the people that see it, but we also hope that it brings joy to people’s lives. 2020 was a tough year for everyone in some ways and hopefully this animation brightens up people’s households! Also we hope that it will put the battery pack in young kids to not be afraid to stand up for what they believe and be vocal about it.

She hopes to be on Broadway one day and would like to thank her family for supporting her growth. SHARONNE LANIER (Ella Payne/Dr. Wilson): In fourth grade, Sharonne Lanier’s teacher forced the entire class to learn Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech for an oratorical contest. Sharonne thought this idea was weird, but little did she know this would change the course of her life forever. She discovered she had a talent for performing in front of people. This talent would lead her down the road of acting and blossom into her undying passion.

Sharonne Lanier studied Theatre Performance at the University of Central Florida graduating magna cum laude. While studying, doubts and thoughts of giving up began to cloud her dreams. On the verge of switching paths, her mother said to her, “I believe God gives you dreams and visions for a reason. Don’t run from it”. Since then she hasn’t looked back. Sharonne is a proud member of the Actor’s Equity Association and has performed professionally in countless stage plays, television, and film productions. One of her favorite roles includes Rosa Parks in Barry Alexander Brown’s and Spike Lee’s “Son of the South” set to theatrically release in 2021. It is not Sharonne’s goal to simply entertain, but she says, “I am an actress who will use my God given talents to positively motivate people. I seek to participate in productions that aim to teach and enhance the joy and integrity of people’s lives. I will leave this world knowing I contributed to making a number of people’s lives easier to live.”
