between us

Sometimes theatre distracts you from the world outside. And sometimes it gives you a light to shine on that world, to help you see a path. And once in a while — it can do both. As I sit here writing a program letter for a play called Broke, the economic pundits are shifting their rhetoric from whether this is a double dip recession to how to chart a path through its quite evident presence. As we begin rehearsals for this play, we do so with a smaller staff than we had before that aforementioned recession, and with people all around us with firsthand knowledge of a spouse who has lost his or her job. There’s nothing hypothetical about this play. Janece Shaffer delights in a good story. She hoovers them out of people who would never think of themselves as forthcoming; I’ve watched her do it time and again. And lucky for all of us, she takes those riches, puts them in the spin cycle with what is happening in our world, and creates even better stories. These are stories for a kind of theatre that entertains us because it’s about something thick and human. Theatre that compels us not in spite of its direct collision with the complications of our lives — but because it hits us so squarely head on. It seems purely inevitable that this author has written a play called Broke. So maybe this one’s about someone you know. Or maybe it’s about you. Either way — hold its hand. It knows the way.

“The basic premise [of “the new normal”] is that we are in the midst of a major national and global realignment. The main catalyst was the financial crisis of 2008, but the underlying factors have been there for a while. The question is: What does the world look like post-realignment? The world is on a bumpy journey to a new destination and the New Normal.” — Mohamed El-Erian, CEO and co-chief investment officer of Pimco

S

ince Black Monday in 1987, the American economy has exploded and crashed, exploded and crashed: 1990, 2001, 2008 ... Janece Shaffer’s play, Broke, examines one family’s crash. It begins with the moment when everything changes. The primary bread winner, a corporate executive, loses her job. This leads to the inevitable downsizing of household expenses, which is where the dramatic tension in Shaffer’s play springs from. What is stressful in real life translates into delicious fun in the theatre. Talking about finances is a tricky proposition. Defining necessity becomes a class issue. And class issues become particularly stressful in a society where

Broke: Synopsis The Eliasons were living the American dream … granite countertops, Range Rovers and HDTV. And then 52-year-old Liz Eliason, a high-level marketing executive (and the major breadwinner in the household) comes home to her husband Jonathan with the news that she’s been fired. She is shocked; he is thrilled. With the wealth they have accrued from her career, they can now finally enjoy a life together. But when the company Liz has worked for goes under a few days later and, with it, a great part of their wealth, Liz, Jonathan and their 19-year-old daughter Missie — a student at NYU — are now facing a new reality. In this world of uncertainty, Broke asks: When it seems like everything is falling through your fingers, what (and who) do you hold on to?

discover us. discover you. Members of our community respond to the work on the stage Our truest selves, the best and worst of us, are revealed in moments of crisis. Our compassion, our selfishness, our fear and our heroism fight it out with no certain winner. We survive. We regroup. We move on. Janece Shaffer’s Broke resonates with the truth that we are all flawed. We do our best; we hurt one another; we comfort one another; we need one another and we resent the needing. In Broke we discover that our deepest relationships are more tensile than fragile, stretching and bending to let us grow. — Penny McPhee, president, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation

class status is perceived to be fluid and defined in large part by spending habits. Disclosing decisions about money breaks social taboos. But as always in the theatre, what is difficult to discuss in “real” life can make a great play. What interests Janece Shaffer isn’t stock market trends, recessions or GNP. She is interested in her neighbors in Atlanta. She is wonderful at listening and chronicling her hometown. And in the past few years, Atlanta has buzzed with many (often whispered or covert) discussions about money. Broke portrays a specific family facing change in the wake of the “new normal.” Shrinking resources to cover expanding

responsibilities define our moment. This play allows Atlanta to come and experience this new normal together. Please respond to the play with your stories, comments and reactions at www.alliancetheatre.org/broke. alliancetheatre.org

Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (1929) to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®. The Alliance has created a large body of new work: world premiere musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions; the plays of early career playwrights through the Kendeda/Alliance National Graduate Playwright Competition; work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community; and original plays for young audiences at every age level. The Alliance takes great pride in our educational programming through the Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists, community education including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development. Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to arts access. The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. 404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre

If it ain’t broke... Award-winning playwright Janece Shaffer on her fourth Alliance production by bret love

T

o hear Janece Shaffer tell it, you might think the Atlanta playwright fell into her career. When she went to grad school at Georgia State, she pursued a film degree; her first script, He Looks Great in a Hat, was a screenplay for her master’s thesis. Fortunately, good friend, and former Alliance Artistic Director, Kenny Leon recognized the screeplay’s potential for theatrical adaptation and offered to do the show at the Alliance. Now, 15 years later, the award-winning scribe has had her plays produced at Horizon Theatre, Theatrical Outfit and Jewish Theatre of the South, among others in Atlanta and around the country. Her latest play, Broke, marks her fourth Alliance Theatre production. You’ve been writing for the stage for 15 years now. What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned? I really work hard to make those people onstage feel as real as possible. I feel my best when there is that kind of identification where people say, “I’ve said that,” or, “I’m just like that!” I am also very much about telling Atlanta stories and sending those out into the world. I’ve learned the art of really listening to people around me and that, for me, the longer the scene is the stronger it is because you don’t have that constant reminder that you’re watching

a play. I love it when it just feels live in the moment. What is your writing process like? I work and rewrite until opening night, literally. Even as we’re talking about Broke, it’s still unfolding. I will rewrite all through rehearsals. Once we have an audience, I will surely be doing rewrites like crazy. It’s really important to me when I cast that I get people who are team players, because there’s going to be chunks of new pages every day. I want to try everything that I can on people, and then tailor to the voices in the room as I continue to refine the story. What was the inspiration behind Broke? I was having a discussion with my husband about bills, and then I went to open a bottle of wine and thought, “Why do we have a $90 corkscrew?” We are very modest people, but we have a $90 corkscrew called “The Rabbit!” Then I had a number of friends who lost their jobs and were having really tough discussions, like “What is it that matters most to us?” So it’s about losing your job, but it’s also about losing what defines you. Without the staff, the title, the schedule, what is it that makes me, me? What is the priority in our lives? Some of the choices we make are crazy. Want to read more? We believe you deserve world-class surgeons. At WellStar, you have the best of both worlds - a community health system with surgeons of the highest caliber. Not only do they perform more than 40,000 procedures every year - more than any other health system in metro Atlanta – but they also train other doctors. Surgeons from around the world and leading U.S. medical centers have come to learn the latest in minimally invasive procedures and spinal surgery. Put the most advanced medical technology in their hands – including the da Vinci robotic surgical system – and you have world-class surgical care. Even major surgery doesn’t seem so major – not when you have world-class surgeons and the most advanced technology available. Why would you have surgery anywhere else?

We believe in life well-lived.
