“God Bless us Everyone!” Sound familiar? I am amazed by the fact that I will occasionally encounter someone who is unfamiliar with this journey — or at least has never actually seen a stage production of the work. They are the exceptions to the rule. Most of us come back year after year and embrace this tale like an old friend. The season also inspires ritual. But somehow that does not seem reason enough to explain the appeal of the story. After all, there are many good stories. I researched a little bit about what has been written about the original Christmas Story — the one that inspired Dickens and the reason why December 25 is a day off. I came upon a little essay that was printed in the New York Times on December 25, 1937. It is from a book entitled Quotations for Special Occasions by Maud van Buren. (I am imaging my mother reading it in her Bronx apartment and smiling.) “We hear the beating of the wings over Bethlehem and a light that is not of the sun or of the stars shines in the midnight sky. Let the beauty of the story take away all narrowness, all thought of formal creeds. Let it be remembered as a story that has happened again and again, to men of many races, that has been expressed through many religions, that has been called by many different names. Time and space and language lay no limitations upon human brotherhood.” We are all a part of this human brotherhood and/or sisterhood and Scrooge is no exception. No matter what our beliefs — no matter what event we choose to celebrate — those stories that inspire us to be better human beings cannot help but stand the test of time. And the innocence of the tiny child who somehow also embodies the wisdom of the ages reminds us of the child ever within us who still has the guile to hope. May the stories of your life serve to enlighten and support you and may the joy of the season sustain you through the New Year. “God Bless Us Everyone!”

A Christmas Carol: A Victorian reflection on our own financial times by celise kalke

n irony of Christmas kitsch is that Ebenezer’s Scrooge’s counting house has become a Christmas tree ornament. In fact, the Victorian counting house was an elaborate part of a complicated financial system, part accountant’s office and part money-lending organization. And, in Scrooge’s case, part warehouse filled with the artifacts of past financial deals.

The novel’s world of banks with easy lending practices but harsh late penalties is one close to our own time. Charles Dickens’ grandparents grew up in a manorial world, with the country dominated by “lords of the manor” and everyone deeply tied to the land. Two generations later, immigration, the growth of the Victorian British Empire and the Industrial Revolution changed the very fabric of English life.

In 1843, Dickens was writing for an English society dominated by factories, where families followed work from the town into the country, and where the nuclear family replaced the village. Dickens himself had witnessed these social changes: his father grew up as a younger son of a British peer, surrounded by wealth and comfort, but as adults, Dickens’ parents faced imprisonment for debt and Dickens himself labored at Warren’s boot-blacking factory in London. The Industrial Revolution’s booming economy was bankrolled by accountants, money lenders and banks. Like Marley and Scrooge, they grew wealthy feeding optimism. Scrooge replaced the manorial lord as the dealer out of largesse — replacing aristocratic noblesse oblige with the attraction of compound interest and late fees. Dickens first penned A Christmas Carol in the depths of a Victorian recession, driven by the financial needs of a large family. Money dominates this beautiful story, with Bob Cratchit slaving for shillings while Scrooge hordes away pounds of pound sterling. The result is a fairy tale for an industrial age, which still rings true as our own economy jolts along.

Once upon a time — of all the good days in the year, on Christmas Eve — old Scrooge sat busy in his counting-house. It was cold, bleak, biting weather: foggy withal: and he could hear the people in the court outside go wheezing up and down, beating their hands upon their breasts, and stamping their feet upon the pavement stones to warm them. The city clocks had only just gone three, but it was quite dark already — it had not been light all day: and candles were flaring in the windows of the neighboring offices, like ruddy smears upon the palpable brown air. The fog came pouring in at every chink and keyhole, and was so dense without, that although the court was of the narrowest, the houses opposite were mere phantoms. To see the dingy cloud come drooping down, obscuring everything, one might have thought that Nature lived hard by, and was brewing on a large scale. The door of Scrooge’s counting-house was open that he might keep his eye upon his clerk, who in a dismal little cell beyond, a sort of tank, was copying letters. Scrooge had a very small fire, but the clerk’s fire was so very much smaller that it looked like one coal. But he couldn’t replenish it, for Scrooge kept the coal-box in his own room; and so surely as the clerk came in with the shovel, the master predicted

GOD BLESS US, EVERY ONE! The Alliance Theatre’s Education Program trains the next generation of Tiny Tims by BRET LOVE

t’s not unusual for people interested in pursuing a particular career path to take classes that will get them started on the road to fulfilling their dreams. But in the acting world, it’s rare that a single class can lead directly to performing for huge audiences. For several members of the cast of A Christmas Carol, that’s precisely what happened when they were discovered via an audition workshop with Director Rosemary Newcott. We spoke with Chris Moses, the Alliance Theatre’s Director of Educational Programs, to learn more about the connection between the Alliance’s education and performance opportunities. You took over as the Director of Educational Programs in January. What have been the challenges of your first year? The fact that arts funding for public schools continues to be cut. We do a lot of work in school systems as well as

on our campus here, so we’re forced to find creative ways to partner with other organizations in order to provide access to all of the wonderful stuff we do. What have been the biggest rewards? We have a huge educational scope, which

I don’t think a lot of people realize. This year we started a new program called Theatre for the Very Young, which is a professional performance designed for kids as young as 18 months. We have all these creative approaches to storytelling to get the kids involved. On the other end of the spectrum, we’re also committed to working with adults, providing training for those interested in pursuing acting, or those who just want to use these skills to help their careers. There’s a wide range of opportunities for any age at any level. Have you seen more kids taking an interest in acting classes with the influx of new film and TV projects being shot in Georgia in recent years? Absolutely! We began seeing a surge of kids enroll in our film classes as soon as Tyler Perry’s studio started their prolific run. We invited Tyler Perry’s casting agent come to visit our classes and talk to our students, and they actually cast a couple of kids from our program, as well. We’ve also seen a bump in adults enrollment. When people hear Cameron Diaz is shooting a film here on our campus, it definitely helps our enrollment. How do these educational programs feed into a production such as A Christmas Carol? Historically, nearly all of the kids who play the various Cratchit kids came up through our classes. This year, director Rosemary Newcott held an audition workshop to give kids an opportunity to work with

her and learn what she’s looking for. It helps her as well, because through that workshop she found two of the kids who wound up being in the show. How do you keep A Christmas Carol fresh when you do the show year after year? I think a lot of it has to do with how Rosemary approaches it from such a sincere place. The heart of the story, to me, is still radical — this notion that anyone has the capacity to change at anytime. The show has become such a beloved tradition here, and so many members of the cast have been doing it for so long, it takes on a real family atmosphere that is a gift both to the actors and to the community. As an actor yourself, what sort of fulfillment do you get from working with these aspiring actors? It’s incredibly fulfilling to see their imagination being sparked. It’s thrilling to see a child experiencing that first connection to art and see them connecting to each other through their shared experience with this art form. That’s my fuel for doing this. discover us. discover you. In A Christmas Carol I discovered the hours of work it takes for a wonderful production to be put together. This was confirmed for me in Into The Woods where I performed in the youth orchestra. But years ago when my older brother performed in A Christmas Carol, I noticed how he would have to miss some school, or go to some late night rehearsals. To me, as a young boy at the time, this was slightly mysterious and built up excitement for me, I couldn’t wait to see it. When opening night came around I couldn’t wait to see what my brother and the entire cast had been working on. It was truly amazing and really got me into the holiday spirit that all children love. My brother enjoyed the experience so much he went back the next year and after that my triplet brother performed his part for two years. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps. about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as we have become a leading international city. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of earlycareer playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. Locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the ground-breaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers. The Alliance takes great pride in our multi-generational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include GA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade, Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and Collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the Collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National Graduate Playwriting Competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to city-wide arts access.
