between us

Sharp trajectories are inherently dramatic. Whether it’s the dizzying ascent of a hero on the rise or the heart-wrenching plummet of a life in decline, all great theatre shares the common spine of people in motion. It’s hard to imagine a path of greater velocity than that of Golda Meir — a woman traveling from Russian immigrant to American schoolteacher to the epicenter of international politics as the fourth prime minister of Israel. When the incomparable Tovah Feldshuh — a woman of serious velocity herself — took on Meir’s story, a true alchemy of powerful women yielded Broadway’s longest-running solo show. Suddenly the expression “theatre of war” had a deeply personal aperture for an audience to walk through. The performer is solo; the journey is shared. And sharp. Hang on.

Tovah Feldshuh on Broadway’s longest-running one-woman show by bret love

A

ctress Tovah Feldshuh has earned four Tony nominations and two Emmy nominations. She has won four Drama Desk Awards and four Outer Critics Circle Awards. She’s appeared on TV in “Citizen Cohn” and “Law & Order,” and in films such as Kissing Jessica Stein and A Walk on the Moon. But the role for which Feldshuh is best known is that of legendary Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in Golda’s Balcony, which she has played off and on for more than eight years. We recently spoke with the New York native about her love of the theatre, how she relates to Golda’s story and the challenges of carrying a one-woman show. Of all the shows you’ve done, what makes Golda’s Balcony special?

It created history. It became the longestrunning one-woman play in 100 years of Broadway. It was a piece that people kept coming back to because it’s so densely historical and informative. When there was going to be a play about the prime minister, [Golda Meir herself ]only wanted one playwright — William Gibson, “that boy who wrote The Miracle Worker”— because she thought that was a great piece. He was allowed to track her for six months, and he’s very accurate in his research. You’ve done many movies and TV shows. What keeps you coming back to the theatre?

I love people. I love being with the people sitting out in the house to

witness this storytelling. It goes back thousands of years, to when the Greeks would speak to the gods through their priests, who became their actors. It was an uplifting and noble mission to begin with, and only later in its history did being an actress become akin to being the mistress of a king. (Laughs) What aspects of Golda’s story are the most resonant for you?

It’s the journey that she takes. She starts off hiding under a staircase from the Czarist-sponsored slaughters of the Jewish people. She ends up running a country whose language is not even her native language. First she learns Russian, then English, and then Hebrew. She didn’t ask to be prime minister: The Israeli parliament came to her and said, “Golda, please, you’re the only person alliancetheatre.org

we can agree on!” She went to the prime minister’s residence, and her first words were, “What do I need this for?” She did not seek power. What are the biggest rewards and challenges of doing a one-woman show? The great thing about having the privilege of allowing a part to marinate in you for eight years is that you begin to acquire it on a cellular level. You want to get something accurate, excellent and effortless. As time rolls on, it becomes more habitual and subconscious. That’s a pleasure. The actor does all the research to know everything about the character so that the character can get onstage and know nothing. It’s like a jazz riff: I wipe the slate clean and see what comes up that day. You got your first Tony nomination in 1976 for Yentl. What keeps your passion for this craft thriving? Part of it is the offers I get. [And] I was born in New York, where Broadway

actors are the stars for the local populus. I got one piece of hate mail in the 16 months I played Golda’s Balcony on Broadway and it had a return address! Now that we have e-mail and the world is becoming one big township, the tidal wave of information is flooding all over these dictatorships, and we have situations like Libya and Egypt. ... As serious as Golda’s Balcony is, I still feel you have the right to a good laugh, particularly under such dire circumstances. God knows that, in this play, I look for every piece of humor I can dredge up to keep my beloved audience laughing through their astonishment and tears. profiles Golda’s Balcony: Synopsis As the Yom Kippur War begins, Golda Meir, the prime minister of Israel, marshals her generals to repel the attack on Israel by Egypt and Syria. Between phone calls, she reflects on her life, especially the toll her public activities took on her marriage and her concerns about the quality of her motherhood. As the Yom Kippur War continues, Golda weighs using Israel’s secret atomic weapons to wipe out Egypt and Syria. She uses this as leverage to get Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger to supply Israel with the conventional weapons they need to repel the invasion and maintain the integrity of Israel’s border. The added airpower from the United States turns the tide of the war. The Egyptians and Syrians retreat to their borders and Israel is safe for the time being. Golda hopes a permanent peace will come.

discover us. discover you. Members of our community respond to the work on the stage In Golda’s Balcony I discovered… ... what I instinctively already knew: That decision-making at any level is difficult and complex. Then, add the complications of a female leader in a male world, a new country trying to justify their existence to so many — especially the struggle between balancing work, a family and an identity — and the natural internal conflict of a woman sending others to war. Golda Meir was so focused on what she believed in at an early age, determined, and she followed it through to the very highest position to create and make change. She sacrificed personally and deeply felt the sacrifice of others, who literally gave their lives for the independent state. So much has changed for women around the world and so much has stayed the same. — Enid Draluck ... that I grew up in a home where building and supporting a Jewish homeland in Israel was just part of what my parents did and we were taught to do. There were pictures on the wall of my father with Golda Meir and he spoke about being at meetings where she mesmerized rooms full of people raising money all over America. He knew he was in the presence of greatness, but he also said she felt just like being in the living room with any and every Jewish mother. Many years later, I was with my father and met Simcha Dinitz. The first thing he said was “meet my daughter, she’s finally pregnant”. Reading the play, I realized that there had been greatness all around me, but these great people were just parents building a better world and securing a future for the Jewish people. — Terri Bagen

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as we have become a leading international city. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of earlycareer playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. Locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the ground-breaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers. The Alliance takes great pride in our multi-generational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the Alliance Theatre Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include GA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade, Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and Collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the Collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National Graduate Playwriting Competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to city-wide arts access. The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. 404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre
