This play is for Moira. The Greek word moira— roughly translated — means one’s portion in life or destiny. When I learned, in some otherwise not so very interesting class on the origins of dramatic literature, of characters — often called The Fates — that were the breathing embodiments of destiny, I got obsessed. What a notion, these goddesses called moira that controlled the metaphorical thread of life of every mortal from birth to death. Atlanta and the Alliance have now been my home for 10 years. And I have been given amazing gifts in this home — a community of artists who inspire me, a family of colleagues who bring joy to my day-to-day existence, and a wealth of cultural supporters who allow dreams to become maps to real places. I have been given the opportunity to turn “what if” into breathing theatre time and time again. Best of all these gifts, though, is Moira. And this time the word is capitalized, because this Moira is my 7-year-old daughter, and she is very much my destiny in this place and this time. Because she has shared her mother and wonderful father so generously with this theatre, I wanted to give her something in return, a piece of theatre for her. And there was really only one choice — something of heartbreaking loveliness called Into the Woods. The cool thing about this gift, though, was that it could be for all of us. “What if,” a few of us started to say a few years back — “what if we created a production of this gorgeous allegory with a living witness of children in the mix? What if we invited young players to join with professional singers and we created something that had room for everybody?” And our friends at the ASO said yes. And our colleagues at the Atlanta Federation of Musicians said yes. And 17 brilliant singers said yes. And now here we are. Careful the things you say, children will listen. Careful the things you do, children will see. And learn. Children may not obey, but children will listen. Children will look to you for which way to turn – to learn what to be. Thank you, Atlanta, for imagining “what if” with the Alliance. Thank you, Alliance, for being my home here in Atlanta. Thank you, Moira, for the richest destiny I could imagine.

Using Arts Enchantment: by celise kalke
S
usan Booth’s 10th anniversary season kicks off with a dream project: the Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine 1986 musical Into the Woods. This musical celebrates the Alliance’s commitment to the highest possible production standards and also our theatre’s commitment to arts education. The musicians on stage are Atlanta area high school artists. Their schools, parents and teachers have instilled in them not only technical rigor but also artistic curiosity: a quality that has sent them into the woods of this theatrical production. Into the Woods began with the work of Viennese child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, who published a groundbreaking study about fairy tales and the developing mind, The Uses of Enchantment. First published in 1975, the book pushes against that era’s relaxed parenting and the beginnings of political correctness. Bettelheim both celebrates and examines ancient storytelling tradition and medieval roots of classic European tales, claiming that their tendency towards dark narratives and frank acceptance of consequences help prepare children for adulthood. Compelling case studies reveal children grasping onto surprising details in tales, manipulating Rapunzel’s tower or the Three Pigs’ Wolf or Cinderella’s journey to the palace for their own ends. By being direct about adult failings and emotional

turmoil, Bettelheim claims fairy tales help a child “bring his inner house into order, and on that basis [allows him] to create order in his life.” Bettelheim also quotes the 19th century poet and dramatist Schiller saying, “Deeper meaning resides in fairy tales told to me in my childhood than in the truth that is taught by life.” In the 1980s, there occurred a renewed interest in “classics”; including Great Book programs, new opera productions and adult versions of fairy tales. This interest accompanied a new energy around aesthetic adventure. Some of the most exciting directors and adaptors of the time started looking for classic plays and narratives from which to springboard into brave and exciting aesthetic exploration. Into the Woods combines Bettelheim’s thinking with this
{
“To me, ‘Once upon a time’ indicates a timeless quality that meant creating a world in which garments are influenced by fashions spanning from prehistoric times to modern day haute couture. This is made evident from the use of leather hides as a utilitarian apron on Jack’s Mother to Cinderella’s feather ballgown (an homage to the late Alexander McQueen, a visionary whose work was often inspired by these very tales).” — Costume Designer Lex Liang
aesthetic energy. The musical as produced today still allows director, designers and actors to embark on their own journeys of re-imagining, creating contemporary versions of archetypal characters. Curiosity drives every aspect of this haunting musical. An audience favorite, the experience of the show has always been greater than the sum of its critical parts. Into the Woods uses the exercise of storytelling in a more creative fashion than Sondheim’s more famous Sweeney Todd melodrama. Into the Woods in Act One tells five fairy tales. In Act Two, these same tales
{
are deconstructed, reexamined, rewoven, taken apart and adapted. Although Sondheim and Lapine completed their own adaptation process, Act Two of Into the Woods reminds the audience that fairy tales are to be learned, repeated and then transformed for every age. alliancetheatre.org

cast Children Will Listen… The young musicians of Into the Woods From first inception, this production of Into the Woods was going to include children. This beautiful allegory speaks to the inherent and troubling tension between the lessons we teach and the lives we lead. That’s why this production features a young people’s orchestra; they are our witnesses, and, as such, watch all of us for their cues. The presence of this orchestra was made possible through the supportive partnership of the Atlanta chapter of the American Federation of Musicians, and the discovery of these young musicians was made possible through the remarkable collaboration offered us by our colleagues at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, with particular thanks to Atlanta Symphony Orchestra President Stanley Romanstein, Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra’s Conductor, Jere Flint and the Atlanta Symphony’s Education Team of Mark Kent, Melanie Darby, Nicole Bird and Ahmad Mayes.

Synopsis Act 1: Once upon a time in a far-off kingdom, a baker and his wife long for a child. A witch instructs them to journey into the woods collecting objects and completing tasks. They join Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Ridinghood and Rapunzel. By the end of the act, Cinderella becomes a princess, Jack kills his giant and Little Red has been rescued from the Wolf, while Rapunzel escapes her witch. And the Baker’s Wife is with child. Act 2: Once upon a time — later — in the same far-off kingdom. Happy ever after isn’t as happy as expected. The Giant’s Wife descends down the beanstalk, enraged by grief, bent on revenge. Some characters die, some characters live, but they all grow through their discoveries in the woods.
discover us. discover you. “In Into the Woods, I discovered that ‘wherever you go … there you are’ — whether into the woods or around the corner. Our ‘story’ goes with us as we move through life and, for better or worse, is transmitted through the next generation. Seeing ‘be careful what you wish for’ played out so insightfully gives me much to ponder. Hearing the song ‘Children Will Listen’ sung so poignantly gives me balm for my parenting stumbles. And laughing my way through ‘The Woods’ with others gives me hope that such shared experiences as theatre will show us the way out.” — Victoria Palefsky, Alliance Theatre Board of Directors, Vice Chair

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as we have become a leading international city. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of early-career playwrights through the Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. Locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the ground-breaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers. The Alliance takes great pride in our multi-generational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include GA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade, Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and Collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the Collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National Graduate Playwriting Competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to city-wide arts access. The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. 404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre

Put the most advanced medical technology in their hands – including the da Vinci robotic surgical system – and you have world-class surgical care. Even major surgery doesn’t seem so major – not when you have world-class surgeons and the most advanced technology available. Why would you have surgery anywhere else?
We believe in life well-lived.
