between us
It’s about the “social” in “social media”…. Once upon a time, people attended socials. Lovely gatherings, I hear — often featuring ice cream — and always providing an opportunity for carefully governed flirtations. I imagine sideways glances, furtive smiles, tiny gestures of implied intimacy that seem so quaint these days. These days of MTV’s “16 and Pregnant,” these days of eHarmony and all its cyber brethren, these days when “hooking up” has a whole new meaning. The emerging generation of digital natives are said to spend well over half of their time inhabiting a constructed persona (vs. their walking and talking one). These personas live in games, online, in texts — and, after a fashion — in society. Socially. These personas have a relationship status, an emoticonbased language, and the very same human urges that have been around since, well, the days of ice cream socials. Welcome back Second City — a familiar Alliance friend with a new show. Welcome back relationship comedy — a familiar subject with a new vocabulary. Welcome back socializing — a familiar need hooked up in a whole new way.

“While I was writing the last page, tear after tear fell on the paper. But I must cheer up — catch! — An astonishing number of kisses are flying about — The deuce! — I see a whole crowd of them! Ha! Ha! … I have just caught three — They are delicious! … Adieu. I kiss you millions of times.”
LOVE &
— Mozart to the Immortal Beloved
by celise kalke
WRITING S
ince paper and ink were invented, love poems, letters and other correspondence have been a staple of courtship. The letters are silly, vulnerable, lovely, humbling, wonderful and ridiculous. As pen and ink became the tools of “snail mail,” the tools of courtship moved to key strokes and electronic data. Beginning with e-mail (so 1990s) and moving through chat rooms to profiles and tweets, from desktops to laptops to smart phones, the written word has rarely been as widely or successfully used as a tool of courtship.
The great piece of epistolary courtship for the theatre, a Hungarian play Parfumerie, evolved through a variety of mediums. It became the American film The Shop Around the Corner and inspired the wonderful musical She Loves Me. All these adaptations understood the play’s hilarious concept: Two co-workers write anonymous love letters to each other while sparring at work. There is something wonderfully theatrical in watching two characters expose their feelings in writing while hiding behind rigid social masks in the workplace.

EncoreAtlantA.com
The 1990s e-mail romantic comedy, You’ve Got Mail, pushed the world of epistolary courtship portrayals into an e-mail format. In the movie, two neighbors on the Upper West Side are busy rivals and polar opposites. Yet their e-mails to each other betray a profound love of books, of writing and a common creative/romantic spark. Sex and The Second City’s iLove combines the fun of having an online private/public life with a traditional public face. The script is more plot-driven than previous Second City forays in Atlanta, taking advantage of the plot conventions of romantic comedy
“I awake all filled with you. Your image and the intoxicating pleasures of last night allow my senses no rest. … Yes! One night has taught me how far your portrait falls short of yourself! … In three hours I shall see you again. Till then, a thousand kisses, mio dolce amor! But give me none back for they set my blood on fire.” — Napoleon to Josephine (two couples, misunderstandings, couples coming together and drawing apart). At the same time, the show uses the world of Internet dating and improbable meetings as platforms for The Second City’s unique form of improvised comedy. It is completely contemporary while looking back to older forms of theatre.
So whether you look for love in a library or bar, on Facebook or Match.com, use the phone or e-mail or jump right into texting, there is something for you in this hilarious, silly and romantic show. Celise Kalke is the Alliance Theatre Director of New Projects. alliancetheatre.org

LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX (& THE SECOND CITY) Amy Roeder returns to Atlanta for a comedy about love, lust & everything in between by bret love
I
n the interest of full disclosure, Amy Roeder and I used to perform together in a local improv comedy show called Improv Monster. So it has been delightful to watch the UGA theatre grad emerge as one of Atlanta’s most respected comedic actresses. After appearing in all three of The Second City’s sketch shows at the Alliance Theatre, Roeder was hired by the famed Chicago company to travel the world, performing on cruise ships. Now based in the Windy City, the prodigal daughter has returned as one of the stars of Sex & The Second City, a show that skewers the modern dating scene to hilarious effect.

This is your fourth consecutive year working with The Second City at the Alliance. What is it about The Second City that makes their shows such a good fit for you as an actress?
I like that you ask how the shows are a good fit for ME. I am just humbled and delighted that I’m a good fit for these shows! The Second City has long been the premier improvisation and sketch comedy theatre in the world, and the fact that these revues have been in collaboration with the Tony Awardwinning Alliance Theatre makes these shows truly special.
What was it about the central themes of Sex and The Second City that intrigued you?
trying to navigate the world of love and dating in Atlanta, but it’s a story anyone can relate to.
In a typical Second City revue, the audience might see the characters in one or maybe two short scenes. What I love about this show is that the audience really gets to know the four central characters and watch them evolve throughout the piece. Also, it’s a show about love, so there’s a real heart to it. I think the audience will definitely relate to the material and to the characters.
From “Sex and the City” to He’s Just Not That Into You, the modern dating scene is a hot topic in pop culture. What does this show add to the conversation?
How much improvisation was involved in the creation of the show, and how much of the performances will be improvised?
The show is very much like a traditional play, so there isn’t as much improvisation as there has been in past Second City Atlanta revues. But there are definitely some very fun improvisational moments. Almost all of the scripted material came out of The Second City tradition of scripting successful improvisations, which is a technique [The Second City founder] Bernie Sahlins advocated. The authors of the show gathered and modified archival material, adding new pieces along the way to craft a cohesive, fully realized story. Previous Second City shows at the Alliance have incorporated Atlanta angles. Does this show follow that trend?
I think this show is more universal. We definitely make the show about people

The show adds The Second City’s particular flavor. For 52 years, The Second City has held a mirror up to modern society so that we can all see our foibles, strengths and failings clearly reflected in their material. With “Sex and the City” or He’s Just Not That Into You, I think it’s too easy for the person watching or reading to disassociate themselves from the situations. We watch “Sex and the City” and think, “Thank goodness that’s not MY life.” With our show, The audience is really going to identify with the characters. Other than laughter, what do you hope audiences will take away from the show?
Hope. Is that too corny? That’s too corny. But I’m a hopeless romantic so, yeah... hope. Bret Love is the founder of ecotourism/ conservation site GreenGlobalTravel. com; the national managing editor of INsite magazine; and music editor for Georgia Music Magazine. He freelances for more than a dozen other national and international publications, and performs on numerous improv teams with Jackpie at Relapse Theatre.

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as we have become a leading international city. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of earlycareer playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for the finalists. Locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the ground-breaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers. The Alliance takes great pride in our multi-generational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the Alliance Theatre Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include GA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade, Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and Collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the Collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National Graduate Playwriting Competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to city-wide arts access. The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. 404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre

Ever dream of having your name in lights? Of being an improv star? Or does the mere thought of standing in front of an audience chill you to your core? I sat down with Christopher Moses, Alliance Theatre’s Director of Educational Programs to find out more about what the Alliance has to offer to business executives and wanna-be stars alike.
PLAY THE LEAD IN YOUR LIFE OR BUSINESS
BY ALICIA QUIRK
Even though the material was challenging, the instruction concentrated and the schedule rigorous, the results were a thoroughly exciting and entertaining show and a cast of even stronger actors, each with a richer ability to reach, stretch and grow in a scene and a role. Every actor, student and professional, grew from this experience. - Alpha Trivette is an Alliance acting student who was most recently hired to be an Understudy for the Alliance Theatre’s Production of Broke.
A: If someone in our audience is inspired by the performances they see onstage tonight—how could an Alliance Theatre Class prepare them to take the plunge into performing? C: They could learn a lot of the same skills beginning in our introductory acting classes. These classes are designed for people who have never had any type of acting experience and [they attract] people of wildly different backgrounds—from those looking to improve their business or presentation skills to those just looking to try something fun and new. A: What makes the Alliance Theatre’s classes unique? C: Our instructors. We make a point to hire top-notch instructors and we tie a lot of our work into what’s happening onstage. For instance, while we were
performing Into the Woods, our students were studying Sondheim and developing pieces around his canon of work. With Golda’s Balcony we are presenting a student production about modern day Israel. So it’s really taking advantage of our artistic resources and making the classes stronger because of it. Our introductory acting class went to see Broke, and learned about acting by experiencing that play and watching those professionals ply their craft. Then they had the chance to come back into the classroom and incorporate what they had seen onstage. A traditional studio won’t be able to integrate that into their teaching. We also give our continuing adult actors a chance to perform in our black box theatre. A: Do you have any examples of how the Alliance Theatre Adult Acting training has helped a business professional? C: We had a gentleman come for classes last year who was interviewing for a very high level position at a local university. He had been turned down, ostensibly because he didn’t know how to present himself. After training with us for several weeks, he had another shot at presenting
himself to the board and was awarded the position. Right now we are starting a new program; Sharon Brewer [Education Development Manager], is working with CARE and training their executives on stage presence and business presentation skills. So it’s something we are really looking to increase—both in individual coaching sessions and group classes. But the one thing I want to stress, especially to our Second City audience, is that these classes are fun! Yes, it can help you with your profession, [but] it’s also a chance to try something different and meet interesting people. There are many people who come here because they’ve always had a dream of being an actor, but there are probably just as many who are curious and want to try something different, and they are just as welcome here too. And we’re offering a special discount for our Second City patrons through the end of the season: you can take 20% off a class by using promo code 2CITY20. There really is something for anyone, at any point. We have performances for kids who are 18 months-old and classes for ages 3 up to adults. You don’t have to be a professional actor to take advantage of this.
Use promocode 2CITY20 for 20% OFF one adult class through Spring 2012. Cannot be combined with other offers and not valid on previously purchased classes. Offer on a first come, first served basis. Subject to availability.
