What are you capable of? I don’t mean that in the superhuman feats of physical derringdo sense, I mean that in the “oh NOW you’ve gone and ticked me off and I am rolling up my sleeves/taking off my earrings” sense. Anger is a human universal, but how it manifests can be deeply revealing of the individual. And watching it manifest at close range can make for both great sport and vivid theatre. It’s a wildly reductive reading of his philosophies, but I always thought Hobbes (the thinker, not the tiger) was spot on with his assessment of human nature as essentially self interested. And absent the existence of a functional social contract, we might all act like a bunch of — well, tigers. Part of the brilliance of God of Carnage is how handily and delightfully it blows up those social contracts. Those graceful and unspoken agreements we usually abide by. Until we don’t. And the sleeves roll up and the earrings come off and the throwing down begins. The chardonnay sipper turns into the gladiator and we all lean forward. With what? Fear? Delight? Relief that it’s them and not us? Or maybe envy that it’s them and not us…? I’ve loved this play for a long time. We did a reading of it several years ago when it was first translated, but by the time we tried to secure the rights, it had been fast tracked for the West End and then Broadway. But the good news about the wait is that now we have the opportunity to offer you a production helmed by a dear Alliance friend and former colleague, the inestimable Kent Gash. It’s lovely to have him back and he will, I think, appreciate a final sentiment from no less a champion of deeply primal throwdowns than Bette Davis: Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.

ON GOD OF

CARNAGE S

pending an evening with the two couples at the heart of God of Carnage is a little like having drinks with George and Martha, the battling couple who set the gold standard for marital melt downs in Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? We immediately sense that all is not well with the Raleighs and the Novaks. What takes a minute longer for us to realize is that maybe all is not as well with us as we hoped it might be. To our surprise, we may see something of ourselves in their earnest efforts to respond appropriately to a playground conflict between their children that escalated into physical violence. We watch nervously, maybe even laughing a little, as their carefully cultivated civility quickly degenerates into escalating psychic violence that pits one against the other in an ever shifting landscape of attacks and alliances where no one can be sure from which direction the next barb might be launched. By the end of the play, when the two exhausted

couples are about to go their separate ways, a good whack in the face with a playground stick seems perhaps the lesser of two evils. With dialogue as brittle as it is familiar, playwright Yasmina Reza captures the deep sense of alienation and unease that lies just beneath the carefully controlled surfaces of the character’s lives. These are people who can chatter on and on about the secret ingredient that makes an unforgettable clafouti, but who seem

clueless about what it takes to be a good parent, a good husband, a good wife, a loving son or a responsible, engaged citizen of the planet. The play draws its characters slowly into the terrifying realization that they are not who they thought they were, or even who they wanted others to believe they might be. Their most intimate relationships are shown to be hollow, poisoned by things unsaid and conflicts unresolved. The idea that their children, spoken about but never seen, are independent creatures who form gangs and fight for status and position among their peers as ruthlessly as any adults, seems not to have occurred to either set of parents until the moment we see them arguing passionately that the kids are savages or saints, with no possible shades of grey in between. With increasing desperation, Veronica Novak argues for “the possibility of improvement,” as the four turn on each other with an unexpected ferocity that leads finally to the drowning of a cell phone that is practically a fifth character and the destruction of an innocent bouquet of tulips, bought from the Korean deli down the street with such high hopes and then dashed to the living room floor with a watery splash and the shattering of glass. We listen to a last-ditch attempt to reassure

a heartbroken child that life is not as cruel as she suspects it may be after the death of her pet hamster under suspicious circumstances. But after watching Yasmina Reza’s brilliant play, we may find ourselves suspecting that in the face of “the god of carnage,” the child may be closer to the truth than we would like to admit. I have only experienced this play in the pages of the printed script. The voices of these desperate people have only existed inside my head, so I have awaited this production with great anticipation. I have admired the work of Crystal Fox and Jasmine Guy over many years, including their amazing performances in three of my own plays. Keith Randolph Smith and Geoffrey Darnell Williams are among the most talented actors working in the American theatre today. I have no doubt that the members of this ensemble will push each other, and those of us who are privileged to watch them, as close to the truth as we can stand. And then just a little closer. Pearl Cleage is the Alliance Theatre’s Artist in Dialogue and author of several novels and plays, including What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day, Flyin’ West and The Nacirema Society Requests the Honor of Your Presence at a Celebration of Their First One Hundred Years. alliancetheatre.org

god of carnage Director Kent Gash on bringing the Tony Award®-winning play to the Alliance by bret love

T

he Alliance Theatre’s production of Yasmine Reza’s God Of Carnage has some mighty big shoes to fill. The original Broadway production had an all-star cast featuring Hope Davis, Jeff Daniels, James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden. All four were nominated for 2009 Tony awards, with Harden winning Best Leading Actress, Matthew Warchus winning for Best Direction, and the production taking home honors for Best Play. Fortunately, director Kent Gash — the Alliance’s former Associate Artistic Director and current director of NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ New Studio on Broadway: Music, Theatre & Acting — is more than up to the challenge. His version of the play uses an all African American cast that includes Jasmine Guy, Keith Randolph Smith, Crystal Fox and Geoffrey Darnell Williams, providing a unique cultural lens through which to view Reza’s potent

story. Encore Atlanta spoke with Gash to get his take on God of Carnage. What do you think it is about playwright Yasmine Reza that people respond to in such a powerful manner?

I think both this play and [her breakthrough play] Art speak to the surface challenges of life; in this case, the ongoing adventure of parenting and responsibility for our actions. God Of Carnage is seductively entertaining while always testing who we are, who we think we are and what primal instincts lurk beneath the veneer of civilization. At our core, are we really that evolved as a species? There are big, complex questions explored, but the exploration is always on a human scale, engaging our hearts and our heads. What was it about God Of Carnage’s story that resonated with you as a director?

What I find powerful is that no one is what they seem to be on the surface. So often in life we’re put in situations that call into question who we are, what we’re made of and what’s important to us. What lengths will we go to when our family is threatened? How quickly do we become territorial, tribal or clannish? Is that instinct, impulse or both? What do our faces look like when we remove the mask of civilization and good manners? I began my career as an actor, and any play that features four extraordinarily complex characters is a feast for consummate actors. The opportunity to bring this work to Atlanta audiences with this glorious cast was too good to refuse. The topic of violence and bullying in schools has become increasingly sensitive. Do you feel the show taps into our cultural zeitgeist in some way?

I definitely think that the play has become more timely now than when it was originally written. Sadly, bullying (and its tragic aftermath) is a greater problem now than ever before. But the play is less about the bullying and brutality among children and more about how much the adults may become animals, or children, when trying to act calmly and rationally on behalf of their offspring. Your production of the play is the first to use an all African American cast. Why was that important, and what dimensions do you think your approach adds to the show?

14

EncoreAtlantA.com

I think the all African American cast is important simply because there are four consummate African American actors who will be giving bravura performances. We will not change the text; we will simply tell the story through this cultural lens. I think there will be unique nuances brought to this production by virtue of the cultural context. Atlanta is a rich and diverse cosmopolitan city with a thriving African American population that’s as educated, successful and diverse as the four characters on stage. People will see themselves, or their friends and neighbors. Sometimes the best theatre reflects its audience and the community that receives the work. This seemed like a wonderful way to present God Of Carnage to all of Atlanta. In the end, what do you hope audiences will take away from this production?

I hope that the audience is sore from laughing uproariously and moved from getting a glimpse of themselves. Most of all, I hope that we continue to act in ways that bring our idea of ourselves at our best, more in line with our behavior, our actions and how we treat each other. profiles Synopsis Two sets of parents, Alan and Annette visiting Michael and Veronica, meet for a dinner to discuss a playground conflict: Alan and Annette’s son has hit Michael and Veronica’s son with a stick, breaking two teeth. The parents have gathered to amicably discuss how to deal with the boys, but the evening quickly descends into discord and a ruined coffee-table book. Class fissures within the upper middle class milieu emerge. The discussion soon melts down into each adults’ relationship with “the god of carnage” as opposed to “the art of coexistence.”

discover us. discover you. According to Webster’s dictionary, the word “carnage” is defined as a great slaughter or injury. I start off with this definition, as what I find in the play, God of Carnage, is that the interaction between these two families, that were brought together to have a “civilized” discussion about how to handle an accident amongst two children, actually results in the severe “slaughtering” or “injuring” of their civility and humanity. I found that the play explores the concept of civility, and how we as human beings, can get so enraptured in the superficial barriers of race and class, that we lose sight of what connects us … our humanity. I think this play allows us the wonderful opportunity to go back to the core meaning of the old saying, “Treat others as you would want to be treated” and to embrace that in our daily lives. — Imara Canady, Vice President of Programming and Strategic Partnerships, National Center for Civil and Human Rights

The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps. about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as we have become a leading international city. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of earlycareer playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. Locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the ground-breaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers. The Alliance takes great pride in our multi-generational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include GA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade, Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and Collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the Collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National Graduate Playwriting Competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to city-wide arts access. The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. 404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre
