A Lifetime of Care
After Maxine’s sister Beverly died from cancer, she and her other sister decided to undergo genetic testing at Northside Hospital to determine their risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer. Maxine’s results came back positive. With that knowledge, she was able to catch her breast cancer early. Now she’s healthy and back on track with her life. You may know Northside as the place for babies, but the hospital also is a leader in diagnosing hereditary cancer.

or Jesse Huot, archiving the work of famed dancer/choreographer Twyla Tharp and acting as her business manager is more than just a job. It’s a family affair. The only child of Tharp and painter Robert Huot, he has been around artists and dancers his whole life. “The first rule was, ‘Don’t step on the kid,’ because I was crawling around the dance studio,” he says. “That’s how long I go back. “It’s exciting to be able to work together, have that [shared] purpose; it’s very fulfilling,” he continues. “Can it be challenging sometimes? Definitely. But she’s my mom, and I approach it like that, not that she’s this famous person or incredible artist. First, she’s my mom.” But, there’s no denying Huot’s mom is a famous and incredibly prolific artist. In

addition to having a distinguished dance career, Tharp has choreographed more than 130 works for ballet companies, films and Broadway; written two books with another on the way; and has received honors such as the MacArthur Foundation “genius grant.” “I think Twyla is one of the pioneers, if not the pioneer of what’s known as ‘crossover’ dance,” Huot says. “Her piece Deuce Coupe (1973) was one of the first dances incorporating classical and modern ballet on one stage at one time.” This month, Atlanta audiences will be the first to see Tharp’s newest work, Come Fly With Me. Set to the music of Frank Sinatra, it is “rooted in relationships,” Huot says. “In the Billy Joel show (Movin’ Out) or the Bob Dylan show (The Times They Are A-Changin’ ), there was a lot of political commentary.
This has no political commentary. Sinatra music ... [is] a vehicle that allows relationships to be explored. And the dancing is visceral.” Creating visceral experiences is something Tharp excels at. And Huot is proud to have been able to bear witness to so many, first-hand. “I have incredible respect for all the works,” he says. “The experience of being able to try this stuff out is amazing. To have the opportunity to create something; to develop a relationship with an audience in less than three hours; to try and communicate different ideas, feelings and emotions; and then to be sitting in the house [wondering] if people are experiencing this the way I hope [they] will. That’s pretty neat.” However, Huot’s not only at rehearsals to observe. He also collects, archives
and catalogues every element of Tharp’s work — from lighting plots, music and rehearsal notes to videotapes, photos and costumes — so that the integrity of each piece may be preserved for future generations. “There are always going to be variations when a dance is redone,” Huot says. “But we’re hoping to keep the versions as close to what Twyla wanted as possible.” Huot is looking forward to seeing the final version of Come Fly With Me, a show that’s been three years in the making and features many dancers from the original Broadway cast of Movin’ Out. “I’m excited to see the whole thing, feel it from beginning to end and say, ‘Wow, that was really an experience,’” he says. An experience that, thanks to his archival work, people will be able to enjoy for many years to come. alliancetheatre.org

hether you were a high school geek, freak, jock, popular kid, brainiac or beauty, chances are you felt mightily misunderstood. And no matter how unpleasant home life was, standing on the brink of leaving the nest and having true independence was a little scary. That’s why Rosemary Newcott, the Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth at the Alliance Theatre, thinks it’s so important that young people in high school have a chance to express themselves. Eight years ago, Newcott started the Collision Project, a creative forum where young people can make their voices heard. “What happens is a group of 20 kids come to the Alliance Theatre for three

weeks, and what they do is collide with a text, [like] Our Town or Around the World in 80 Days,” Newcott explains. “We have the text read to them by professional actors, and we ask them, ‘What interests you about this piece? What do you connect to in it?’ Then, we’ll do improv exercises and writing exercises, and dancing and song-creating workshops. Out of this three-week process, they come up with a piece which is a reflection of that text. And they perform it for their friends and family. [A] playwright takes all that material created by those young people and creates another play [with] a smaller cast that I then tour back into the high schools. So, their voices are heard again, after they’ve completed the program.”

themselves and if they have something to say,” Newcott explains. “A lot of them are attracted [to the program] because it is the Alliance Theatre, and some of them are definitely interested in performing, but that’s not a prerequisite.” The success of the program has inspired her to take on a new age group: middle school students. “A middle school student is really stuck halfway in the world of the child and the world of the adult,” Newcott says. “They want to be teenagers. [Yet] they’re really perceived as children, but they don’t want to be called that. And they have a lot to say, as well.” Newcott has sent out surveys to middle school students to find out what they’re interested in, and has already created songs about what they love and hate. These materials will form the basis of a world premiere show, titled Middle School the Musical (or An Improvisational Survival Guide for Tweenagers). Using materials created by middle school students, an adult cast will perform this half-improvised, half sketch comedy show Oct. 19-Nov. 6 on the Alliance Stage.

There is no cost to participate in the Collision Project. “We only take rising juniors and seniors because we believe these young people should be able to get themselves here on their own,” Newcott says. Although, she says, the Alliance offers transportation assistance if teens need help getting to the theatre. Newcott says that she casts a very wide net when she’s looking for participants, advertising the program to schools, community groups and the Alliance community, because she wants to have real diversity in the group. “One of the biggest [benefits] of this is they feel they meet people that they would never have met or talked to before. I always get someone from, like, TriCities High School saying, ‘I never thought I’d ever have something in common from somebody from Kennesaw, and I really do.’ There’s a lot to be said for that in terms of what the program does for them in that way.” Young people are selected for the Collision Project through interviews, not auditions. “It’s just to get an idea of who they are; if they’re interested in expressing

Come Fly With Me The Chairman of the Board. Ol’ Blue Eyes. Leader of a “summit” of midcentury entertainment legends. Singer, curator, showman, Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) remains a cultural icon and uniquely American voice. by Celise Kalke
Originally a pop singer coming out of the Italian community of Hoboken, New Jersey, he fronted big bands and had a successful recording career into the late 40s. But it was a come back after winning the Academy Award for his role in From Here to Eternity and the maturation of his vocal style and song choices that cemented his roll in American pop culture, as well as a vibrant personality and enviable lifestyle. Frank Sinatra, in a generation of great men, was a leader. With Sammy Davis Jr., he helped lead the desegregation of Las Vegas hotels and casinos. As a recording artist, he prided himself on one-take ses-

sions: “Jazz is about the moment you’re in,” the singer Bono recalled him saying. “Being modern’s not about the future, it’s about the present.” The live recordings used in Come Fly With Me takes advantage of that immediacy, the commitment to now. Dance, great dance, also lives in the now. Plays and musicals must advance their stories with every scene change, entrance or exit looking forward to the final blackout, but in dance, every moment is its own pearl, perfect in a string of perfections.
