‘Theatre as a way to life’ André De Shields on his life in theatre

ctors often think of theatre as a way of life. But Broadway legend André De Shields cautions that theatre must be used as a way to life, otherwise there’s no way to strike a healthy balance between the highs and lows that come with the work. “[I] can leave the theatre and live a very successful, joy-filled life because I have understood that theatre as a way of life is finite; you can achieve it,” De Shields says. “When I did my first professional show, Hair in 1969, I achieved that dream. So the question became, ‘What do I do with my life in the theatre?’ “Theatre is supposed to be an infinite experience,” De Shields continues. “It is not destination-oriented. It is an endless revelation of one joy after another. I understand that theatre is the catalyst of a significant life. It is a tool I use for surrendering to my destiny as a performing artist.” The flip side of that blessing, De Shields warns, is that if performers make theatre their reason for being, the life they have outside of that world will start to degenerate or become less valuable. That’s what happens to the character De Shields plays in A Life in the Theatre. “Robert, cannot leave the theatre or he will self-destruct,” he says. However, De Shields points out, Robert’s life in the theatre is fulfilling. “That’s why actors get paid much less than we deserve and much less than what we’re worth and work much harder than people in other professions;

that’s why we stay in theatre — because that’s where we are healed,” he says. “That’s where we experience the rare moment of ecstasy.” Not that all actors have such spiritual goals in mind. A Life in the Theatre also tells the story of John, a young actor who can’t wait to get out of the theatre and on to bigger things. “He is using theatre as many of our contemporary actors do, as a launching pad to another medium,” De Shields says. “Nobody’s right; nobody’s wrong. You always get what you deserve, but there are those of us who choose this process of constant toil as our art and our life, and it is gratified.” De Shields has some words of advice for young actors. “There are only two guarantees in this business, and they’re not fame and fortune,” he says. “They are rejection and insecurity. If, when you are hungry, you can make rejection your food and nourishment, and, when you get lonely, you can make insecurity your companion, this is for you. If you take exception to any one of these, for your own sake and the sake of everyone else in this profession, please do something else.” For those that remain in the theatre, De Shields counsels, “[To paraphrase] Marianne Williamson, ‘We have no reason to be timid, we are all children of God. How dare we not be brilliant, just to make someone else feel better? We are here to be brilliant. Not good, not great, not alright — brilliant. That’s why we’re here.’” ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

why we love the alliance Why Atlanta, now? The Alliance wanted to bring the incomparable André De Shields to our stage, and sought out a play that would showcase his many talents. André is a multi-talented performer, so the demands of A Life in the Theatre , a play with many plays inside it, was a perfect vehicle. The Alliance also wanted to continue our exploration of Mamet with nontraditional casting. Finally the play transports us to theatrical worlds within worlds, providing a mentally vigorous and energetic night out.

Synopsis How far would you go to make your career? The Alliance is thrilled to have Broadway legend André De Shields (The Wiz, Ain’t Misbehavin’ and The Full Monty) headline in David Mamet’s (Glengarry Glen Ross, Wag the Dog and American Buffalo) blistering and darkly comic tale of two actors. Watch as nightly, they transform from drama to farce, from friends to enemies … and that’s just backstage.

Alliance Theatre MISSION: As the premier theatre of the Southeast, the Alliance Theatre sets the highest artistic standards, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people. Now in its 41st season, the Alliance Theatre, recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award®, is the leading professional resident theatre of the Southeast, creating theatre on two stages for youth and adult audiences. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Susan V. Booth, the Alliance Theatre is a national theatre with a local address, reaching out annually to almost 200,000 patrons and members of the community. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the theatre has premiered more than 60 works while launching three Tony Award-winning hits to Broadway: Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. The Alliance Theatre is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Learn more about the Alliance at alliancetheatre.org or by calling (404) 733-4650. Alliance Theatre is a participant in the New Generations Program, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation/The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and administered by Theatre Communications Group, the national organization for the American Theatre. alliancetheatre.org

A Life in the Theatre

Onstage and Off D

avid Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre takes place both onstage and backstage in the dressing room of a theatre not unlike the Alliance Theatre. There is an older actor and a younger actor, two men locked in a Mametian battle for “topdog.” The play is clear-eyed about male work ethics, communication styles, attraction and competition. Since 1977, this play has featured great actors playing the competing actors, including Jack Lemmon and Mathew Broderick for a 1993 TV version and Patrick Stewart in a London production. The Alliance production is the first time an African-American actor has taken on the part of Robert, although Mamet himself approves of and encourages colorblind casting his work. The conceit of the Alliance production is that the many plays featured in Mamet’s script have been directed by some of the leading cutting-edge American directors. So, just as David Mamet is imitating his fellow playwrights, the Alliance production of A Life in the Theatre is paying homage to some of the most adventurous directors of recent years. There are two schools of American directing: one school in which the goal is to lead the ensemble through a representation of real life, and another school in which the goal is to create an alternative world defined by the director’s vision. It is this second school that is being

quoted in the Alliance production, while the dressing room scenes imitate the first school. So the production moves from the painstakingly realistic, echoing the cadence and hard boiled nature of Mamet’s terse, insightful prose to the brilliantly theatrical. Directors that have inspired this production include Robert Wilson, Peter Brook, Ann Bogart, Richard Foreman, George C. Wolfe, Garland Wright, Robert LePage and Adrienne Mnouchkine. The goal of the Alliance production is to celebrate theatre while being honest about a life in the theatre, to put on stage the wonder and magic of why theatre artists work as hard as they do for as little financial reward, while also putting on stage the grit and competition that this hard life demands. It is a play about talent, about the passing of generations, the power of the stage to attract, challenge and use up the wonder of the theatrical moment.
