‘You cannot hold back history for a cotillion’ Playwright Pearl Cleage returns to the Alliance with The Nacirema Society Requests... by kristi casey sanders

“People now talk about the ‘60s as if every person alive was a radical marching down the street, and I know that was not true,” Cleage explains. “I definitely knew a lot of people who were frightened of the change. They knew it was a good thing. But they had made a place for themselves in the confines of the world as it was, and they were nervous (as people always are) at the changes that were coming so fast.” Cleage also didn’t want the play to be too serious. “It’s actually a romantic

comedy,” she says, “which is new for me.” The Nacirema Society Requests the Honor of Your Presence at a Celebration of Their First One Hundred Years marks Cleage’s fourth collaboration with the Alliance Theatre. Her relationship with the Alliance began when Kenny Leon became the artistic director. “We had been working together in much smaller theatres that were always trying to put enough money together to do a season,” she says. At the Alliance, Leon had money to commission new works, so

n 1964, Pearl Cleage was a playwriting student at Howard University and a self-professed radical bohemian. However, when she started writing a play set during those turbulent years, she wanted to explore a different kind of world, one filled with people resistant to the type of change the civil rights movement would bring.

he asked Cleage if she had anything she wanted to develop. “I said, ‘Absolutely!’” she remembers with a laugh. Flyin’ West premiered at the Alliance Theatre in 1992. She wrote two more plays for the Alliance Theatre — Blues for an Alabama Sky (1995) and Bourbon at the Border (1997) — and then unexpectedly found herself with a story in her head that was too large for the stage. That idea became her first novel, What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day. When Oprah Winfrey made it one of her book club selections in 1998, Cleage became a New York Times bestselling author. “It did really well, and they offered me the chance to write another [book],” Cleage remembers. Ten years later, Cleage had eight novels under her belt. But she wasn’t ready to leave the stage behind. “At the heart of it, I’m a playwright,” Cleage says. “I think that is because of the collaboration. Once you’re done with the script, it becomes a collaborative experience. You don’t know if a novel works or not unless someone stops you in the grocery store. But with a play, you know instantly. You can hear if they laugh at the stuff you thought was funny … [or] cry if something bad happens to a character that you cared about.” The death of Coretta Scott King inspired Cleage to write a short play that was produced by Spelman College in 2007 and 7 Stages in 2008.. “It reminded me of how much I had been missing theatre,” Cleage says. “So I finished the novel I was committed to and started working on The Nacirema Society Requests....”

What’s the story? The Nacirema Society of Montgomery, Ala., is scheduled to celebrate its 100th anniversary with a cotillion. Organized by matriarch Grace Dunbar, the gala introduces six African-American debutantes to polite society each year. Unfortunately, the year is 1964, society is no longer “polite” and anything representing the status quo is in danger of being disrupted. As Dunbar and her family discover, their lives are about to irrevocably — and humorously — change.

TREZANA BEVERLEY (Grace Dunbar) Winner of the distinguished Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway show, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, Trezana Beverley has since created a unique signature in the American Theater, as she is also recognized for her highly refined skills as a director, singer and writer. Highlights of her diverse acting career include Mother Courage, A Raisin In The Sun, Flyin’ West, Peer Gynt, Macbeth, Medea and King Lear. In film: Beloved, Resurrection, Carolina Skeletons and Margaret and the Saturday Night Ladies. Her musical talents have been displayed in her one-woman show The Spirit Moves; Constant Star and her cabaret act The Music In Me. Highlights of her directing credits include: Spell#7, Native Son, In The Blood, From The Mississippi Delta, Pecong, The Trojan Woman, Salome, Yellowman, The Bluest Eye; and Blue Door. She is currently on the guest directing drama faculty of the Juilliard School in New York City. Ms. Beverley is also touring King Lear, where she is featured playing the King as a man. And she is developing a one-woman show around the life and music of the great singing artist, Mabel Mercer. KEVIN ALAN DANIELS (Bobby Green) is excited to make his professional debut at Alabama Shakespeare Festival/Alliance Theatre. He calls Dallas, Texas, home but resides in New York City. He recently graduated from Yale School of Drama with a Master of Fine Arts in Acting. Recent roles include Homebody/Kabul (Dr. Kari Shah), Macbeth (Macduff), The Glass Menagerie (Gentleman Caller), Goods Goods (Stacey), Cymbeline (Posthumus) and Three Sisters (Vershinin). He also has B.F.A. from Southern Methodist University with a degree in Acting. He also has written many plays that evolve around the form of hip hop, which he remains a big enthusiast and artist of the art form. Two of his solo performance shows made their debut at the Yale Cabaret. One of which was awarded the Best of 2008 by the New Haven Review. He would like to thank his family for their limitless guidance, love, and continuing support. “Without the support of my family I would not be where I am and could not dare to imagine the future that I want.” ANDREA FRYE (Catherine Adams Green) was last seen at the Alliance production of Intimate Apparel, also wonderfully directed by Susan Booth. JASMINE GUY (Janet Logan) most recently directed the world premiere musical I Dream at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. Earlier this year, she directed Brownie Points for Theatrical Outfit, The Bluest Eye at Spelman College, and For Colored Girls… at True Colors Theatre Company. As a performer, Broadway credits: Chicago, Grease, Leader of the Pack, Beehive. Film credits: Spike Lee’s School Daze, Eddie Murphy’s Harlem Nights, Klash, Guinevere, Diamond Men and October Baby. Her many TV credits include: “Fame,” “NYPD Blue,” Alex Haley’s “Queen,” “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “America’s Dream,” Anne Rice’s “Feast of All Saints” and Showtime’s “Dead Like Me.” Jasmine is best known for her role as Whitley Gilbert on the NBC hit TV series “A Diff’rent World,” for which she won six consecutive NAACP Image Awards. Currently, Jasmine can be seen performing on The CW’s “Vampire Diaries” and Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva.” She is thrilled to perform at the Alliance Theatre in beloved playwright Pearl Cleage’s latest contribution to American Theatre. Peter Hicks (Scenic Designer) Peter was for many years the resident designer at Meadow Brook Theatre in Michigan, where he created the settings for more than 100 productions. His designs also have been seen at a number of

other theatres, including Lansing’s Boarshead Theatre, the Court Theatre in Chicago, the Pioneer Theatre in Salt Lake City, St. Louis Repertory Theatre and the Dallas Theater Center. Also a playwright, his romantic comedy Thinking of You was produced at ASF in the spring of 2007. Mr. Hicks is a graduate of West Virginia University, and a 25-year member of United Scenic Artists Local 829. profiles Why this play? Almost two decades since “The Cosby Show” left television, there are still few plays written about upper-middle and upper class African-American families. The Nacirema Society Requests... is an important contribution to this void. The play is delightful, romantic, elegant and the mature work of one of America’s leading playwrights and novelists. It, like its characters, strives for perfection.

Why Atlanta? Pearl Cleage is a national artist with an Atlanta address. The Alliance is so proud to be working with her again (after producing world premieres of Flyin’ West, Blues for an Alabama Sky and Bourbon at the Border), and to showcase one of the nation’s most exciting voices for home community. As a national theatre with a local address, we bring the best of Atlanta to Atlanta.

Why now? Inspired by an African-American social club in her home town of Detroit, Ms. Cleage examines with this play American identity, backwards. Using a real time period and her own family history, she then lifted some other pieces of history that SHOULD have existed in Montgomery, Ala. in 1964. This play is absolutely of 2010 and reflects today’s comfort with shaking up social division and class assumptions. It’s tone — romantic and fun — is as contemporary as it’s setting is period. The Nacirema Society Requests... is truly a play for today, set in 1964.
