any comedians, from Bill Murray and John Belushi to Tina Fey and Steve Carell, got their start at The Second City. This third Alliance show features three Atlanta actors in the cast, who may go on to be the “next big thing.” Here’s a brief look at who they are; for the full story, visit EncoreAtlanta.com.

What are some of your favorite things about Atlanta? I’ve seen more good theatre [here] than in my whole life, combined. I love how friendly the people are. And I love how into SEC football everybody is. Who were your comedic idols, growing up? Tim Conway, Carol Burnett ... and Lucille Ball. When did you start doing improvisation? Twelve and a half years ago, a friend of mine [from college] who’s really famous now sent me an e-mail out of the blue. He said, “I found improv and really love it, and think you should give it a try.” So, I got into improv because

of a random e-mail from [“30 Rock” actor and The Second City alumnus] Jack McBrayer. This is your third show with The Second City. What does that mean for you? It means a lot! Second City was always the theater that did the kind of work I always wanted to do. I went to audition for them a lot in Chicago, and I always screwed up and felt like a total nob. But after the Atlanta audition, I felt like I’d showen them my best. The show gently pokes fun at some Atlanta icons and traditions. What things about this city would you like to make fun of? My biggest thing I love making fun of is

What are some of your favorite things about Atlanta? The restaurants. I sometimes claim I moved here for Taqueria Del Sol. Who were your comedic idols, growing up? “SNL” and in “In Living Color” were the two sketch shows I watched religiously. [I liked] Dana Carvey; I loved Gilda Radner and Steve Martin. When did you start doing improvisation? In college [Florida State University]. I ran into this little group called the Whammo Players, who were seniors. They were the guys who started Dad’s Garage. I was a groupie. What does working with The Second City mean for you? There aren’t a lot of places we can make money doing improv, and the thought of a company that can help us pay our bills for a day or two, it’s kind of like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. What things about this city would you like to make fun of? I don’t want to be mean, because there’s so much hope in this city and potential for progress. But it’s hard to be patient with a project [like the Beltline]. And the traffic — you can always make fun of that. Randy Havens

What are some of your favorite things about Atlanta? I like the nightlife [and] that there’s

always something to do. We have a lot of great movie theaters like the Plaza Theatre on Ponce. Who were your comedic idols, growing up? I grew up watching Steve Martin and really loving the stuff he did. And reruns of “Saturday Night Live,” with John Belushi and Gilda Radner. When did you start doing improvisation? About 1999, I started doing sketch shows at Dads Garage. [Then] I saw some of their improv and thought, “That looks really cool.” What does working with The Second City mean for you? For me, Second City is the top. To work with them is a great opportunity. When I first started doing improv, I never thought that would be possible. What things about this city would you like to make fun of? I think it’s funny that we take these old neighborhoods and rip them down and build condos. And I think there’s room for comedy in the fact that Atlanta is so integrated. You could be sitting at a bar and there’s such a wide assortment of people there. You don’t see that in other cities.

profiles TARA OCHS (Ensemble) is a graduate of FSU and a regular improviser at Dad’s Garage Theater in Atlanta. She was a company member at ComedySportz (LA); ACME Comedy Theater (LA); and has also improvised for London Theatresports and Baulhaus Ost, Berlin. Tara has appeared in several national commercials and such shows as “One Tree Hill,” “Army Wives,” “Samantha Who?” and “Close to Home.” She was recently seen in the film Life As We Know It. AMY ROEDER (Ensemble) is thrilled to be back at the Alliance with The Second City after having been part of last year’s production of Peach Drop, Stop and Roll and 2008’s Too Busy to Hate…Too Hard to Commute. She recently returned from a tour aboard Norwegian Star with Second City Theatricals and from her sixth summer at ImprovAcadia in Maine. Locally, Amy improvises with JaCKPie Theatre. Thanks to Eric, the Alliance and The Second City for the opportunity! MICAH SHERMAN (Ensemble) is a graduate of the University of Georgia and has performed with Second City in Denver and Boston. He just finished a very successful run of shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with renowned musical improv group Baby Wants Candy. Micah was also in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. That’s right, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. CLAUDIA MICHELLE WALLACE (Ensemble) is a native Chicagoan and has performed with The Second City Touring Company, Urban Gateways, Mystery Machine, Pat Shay Dancers, Armando Diaz Experience and the New York-based group Asscat. Claudia also wrote and performed in Black for More: The Dirty Ass Rhoda Comeback Show and The Deb & Claudia Show. On-camera credits include “Early Edition” (CBS), “ER” (NBC) and “What About Joan” (ABC). Films include: I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With, Let’s Go To Prison, Fred Claus, The Poker House and Witless Protection. Claudia is an alumna of The Second City Mainstage with

Red Scare, Iraqtile Dysfunction and War, now in its fourth smash year. RIC WALKER (Ensemble) is thrilled to return to the Alliance Theater. Ric performed in Second City’s first Atlanta review, Too Busy to Hate… Too Hard to Commute. During a performance of that show, he actually sat on Mayor Shirley Franklin’s lap and serenaded her. He hopes Mayor Reed does not expect the same treatment. Ric is a busy actor, teacher and writer in Chicago. Ric also wants you to know that YOU are his favorite audience member. ;-) RANDY HAVENS (Ensemble) is an actor and member of the Dad’s Garage Improv Ensemble. Recent theater credits include 20/4 at Agathas, Griefers at Dad’s Garage Theater and Screwmachine/Eyecandy at PushPush Theater. He’s also had guest roles on Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne” and Fox’s “Past Life.” He is super excited to be working with The Second City. MATTHEW LOREN COHEN (Musical Director) is a classically trained pianist from New York City who has been music directing for The Second City since 2009. In New York, Matthew co-created the award-winning improvised musical, The Next Big Broadway Musical!, now in its 11th year of production, and he music directed The Nuclear Family, an improvised musical that had a successful off-Broadway run and appeared as part of Dad’s Garage’s 2005–06 season here in Atlanta. R. LAMAR WILLIAMS (Stage Manager) is an Atlanta native. Rodney studied theatre at Florida A&M University’s Essential Theatre. Tendency, the author of three one-man shows, and the blogs The Week in Rebuke and The Week in Dubuque, and the creator of The Chicago Sessions podcast. All of his love to Lauran, his family and the Boston Red Sox. Jody Feldman (Associate Producer) has had responsibility for Alliance Theatre casting since 1992, casting well over 100 Alliance, Hertz Stage and Theatre for Young Audiences productions, including the world premieres of The Color Purple, Aida, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, Blues for an Alabama Sky and Bluish. Other favorites include Jelly’s Last Jam, Day of the Kings, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and the Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition readings each spring. Jody is also casting director for Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company as well as various other regional theatres and commercial endeavors. She serves as line producer for artistic projects such as Taste of the Season and the 2005 August Wilson Tribute. Jody began her theatre career first as an actress and then as the assistant general manager of the Academy Theatre. More than anything, Jody would like to thank you for being here to share the joy of live theatre with her Alliance Theatre family. Susan V. Booth (Jennings Hertz, Jr. Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001. In the past eight seasons, she has initiated the Collision Project for teens, the Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition, created local producing partnerships and overseen regional collaborative productions, as well as commercial partnerships on projects including The Color Purple; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; SISTER ACT the Musical; Bring in Da’ Noise, Bring in Da’ Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL, which she also directed. As a director, she has worked nationally at theatres including Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and

She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul University, and currently serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. She is the immediate past president of the board of directors for Theatre Communications Group (the national service organization for the field), is on the artistic board of the Steinberg Charitable Trust in New York, and serves on the board of the Metro Atlanta Arts and Culture Coalition. profiles Why this play? During the holidays, laughter and merriment don’t always need to be accompanied by mincemeat pies, Santa Claus and Christmas trees. Children are the focus of the season, but adults need a good time too! Besides, The Second City had such a great time in Atlanta for the last two years, they are excited to come back!

Why Atlanta? Laughter helps bring diverse audiences together, especially laughing in different ways at the same things. Building community through participatory (and smart) theatre improv experiences further deepens the shared experience. Plus, each year, The Second City is excited about getting to know our local acting pool even better.

Why now? A lot of people we know have jobs again, but didn’t there for awhile, and plenty still don’t. No one’s house is worth what it was a few years ago. People in Atlanta missed vacationing on the Gulf this summer. There is still a lot going on in the world — people could use the relief of laughter.

About the Alliance Theatre Now in its 42nd season, Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre, recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award® and a leading national theatre, creates the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people on two stages for youth and adult audiences.
