Summerhill
The Summerhill neighborhood and Carter are thrilled to welcome you this holiday season! We are proud to host this year’s unique drive-in production of the Alliance Theatre’s A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play and are honored to play a role in one of Atlanta’s favorite traditions.
Established in 1865, Summerhill is one of Atlanta’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods. Founded by freed African American slaves and Jewish immigrants, it was an early hub for commerce, worship, and education in the city. Throughout the 20th century, the neighborhood has played an important role in the civil rights movement, has produced political, business and entertainment icons like Mayor Sam Massell, Herman J. Russell and Evander Holyfield, was home to Fulton County Stadium, hosted the 1996 Olympic Games, and most recently, welcomed Braves fans to Turner Field for almost 20 years.
Today, the neighborhood continues to look forward. Through partnership with engaged neighbors and local organizations, Georgia State University and Carter are working diligently to thoughtfully redevelop the area once again into a hub for commerce, education, innovation, and community. GSU has expanded their athletics program to Summerhill, with plans for additional world-class facilities and a convocation center which will break ground soon. Many small businesses have opened their doors on Georgia Avenue with more to come, and an array of new homes — from student housing to apartments and townhomes — have welcomed many new, diverse residents to the area.
We believe the future is bright in Summerhill and look forward to welcoming you back soon and often!
Wishing you a wonderful holiday season!
